Eating them here and there is one thing. Eating them throughout an entire deployment is entirely different. It also screws with your digestive system after a while. We had dudes who hadn't pooped once in weeks. It was pretty strange.
Dang! They need to add in a little fiber packet or something. That’s not right 🤣
Thats what they are designed to do....been there done that lol
Yeah exactly... also a lot of the MREs you ger as a consumer are not the same thing as the ones you get when your doing training or on deployment.
Yeah man. I usually pack out what i can and try to ration it all out for as long as possible. I only eat a few of the MRE meals, and a few of the snacks. Iv had quite a long time to find out what works for my stomach, and what doesn’t.
Ill never pass another fist sized brick of a turd in the desert again. F that. Straining so hard like im birthing a baby in those hot sauna porta potties. Working up such a sweat you just want to get naked just so you dont pass out
I was in a work camp for three weeks and they fed us huge meals I would probably eat 3000 calories of food a day with tonnes of fibre and did not poop or gain weight in 2 weeks it was like the food was just being peed out lol I was joking with guys that I was like Kim Jong-un
I was kinda hoping Mav would say “Okay, let’s get this onto a tray. Nice!” 😂😂😂😂😂

Watching you drive while showing off the mre set my anxiety ablaze.
Literally 💯
I skipped through it once he started doing that. I was like.. why....
Do any of you soft ass marshmallows even drive? He was on a straight road holding the steering wheel with his knee and shifting his eyes back to the road every other second lmao, yall the people that lock up scared as hell driving and cause accidents
I kept thinking *its ok it has autopilote* to not get anxious xd
true
When my husband and I were homeless people use to always give us MREs and some of them really are pretty damn good! We really liked the chili mac and the cheese ravioli in marinara sauce, those were the 2 favorites. The chicken fajitas are pretty good too.. I use to get super excited to open them up just to see what "goodies" were inside and sometimes you get tootsie rolls which are my favorite lol oh also sometimes they give you these vegetable crackers which are actually delicious and if sold in stores I would definitely buy them
wish you Best of Luck
So the 2 of y’all couldn’t get a job,? Or y’all were just lazy? Poor money management?
@@uadrama Honestly its not really my place to tell you what to do with your life so I just wanted to leave you with a message. You never know what someone is going through, or even if they deserve it. Do what you want but I wouldn't assume anything about anyone, it just causes problems and hurt feelings. You need to approach things with compassion and love no matter what they did to deserve something (unless they're like a cereal killer or something). When I was in the Army, chili mac was the best MRE at the time. Also, hats off to Glen for letting you onto his land! Canadians are amazing people!!
That one is still the best.
MRE Chili Mac is so fire after a long ass day
@@skazzaoverlord especially when you don't get that nasty Pop-Tart and you get Skittles
Chili Mac and Spaghetti were my go to meals. If you were in during the 90’s then you got pound cake too… mmm pound cake. 😂
@@ElJefe-zu4ee I was in after 9/11. I found pound cake in a few meals. It was pretty good
1. Chili Mac is the absolute best. 2. When you eat them everyday, you get to a point where you just kinda stop heating them up all the time and eat them cold. Great vid Mav!
That's the first one I ever ate. You really taste the vitamin aftertaste in that one.
Agreed, Chilli Mac is the best!
@@kennygomez6957 agreed
Chilli Mac, chicken with bbq sauce and the chicken egg noodle are my top 3. I liked the tuna but I got tired of tuna because nobody liked tuna and always traded with me for it
Chili Mac is always the best, especially cold. You can’t go wrong with any of the pasta MREs tbh
I was actually surprised how much each ration had in it. Like a whole survival kit with the matches included lol
well yeah is given to the U.S military
Look up us marine crucible and see how much it really is when u have to ration it
Cause its for a 240 lbs soldier

@@miakalifa8234 I was never actually all that hungry during the crucible, it was plenty
I was in the Army until 2011. The MRE’s did get better every year. But at like 2,000 a package, they are meant for high energy days. Also will clog up your pooper for days-that’s what the gum is for. It acts as a laxative.
Also, that wasn’t napkins, it was toilet paper. Lol. Truth!
My favorite was the Chili Mac. I also liked the shakes that came out about 2003. But I heard they stopped making them in like 2014-not sure.
You did a good job making them. Always make sure you have the heater bag at the proper angle, and that the heating element is on the bottom of the food pouch, not on top of it.
It gives me so much anxiety seeing youtubers hop on the trend of MREs and eat like two of them in one sitting lol
Yep! As a female soldier, my two "go to" MREs if I can get my hands on them is the cheese tortellini and the Asian beef strips. I'll eat each one a day and save the entrees for my last meal. I couldn't IMAGINE eating more than two per day.
Also, I love the combination of the vegetable crackers and the jalapeno cheese spread.
It's not a laxative, and never has been. It's the oldest myth in the service.
Being both a big Steve1989 fan and a big Mav fan, this feels like a dream crossover episode
Let's get this set onto a tray.

They need to meet up.
During the summer of 2016, I volunteered to eat only MRE'S for 21 consecutive days during a U.S. ARMY GUT RESEARCH PROGRAM.condicted at the U.S. ARMY'S Natick Food Labs, Natick MA. Blood, urine and stool samples were taken in the 30 day period. I was instructed to only drink water with the menu beverages provided and eat only the contents of each meal during the 21 days. The selected menu items were from 2014 menu selection. All were consumed and all empty packaging was teturned to the lab personnel. No adverse side efects or constipation was experienced by me. I enjoyed helping. I did not loose or gain any weight. I went about my daily routine duing the 30 day period in the study.
Damn! I was waiting to read that you lost weight
thats pretty cool man. thanks for the share
I would love to see this as a series you do every so often. MREs are also a great way to eat another country's food without having to actually go to that country, they always have their own spin on things in every country that does them.
Also, being a big StevieMRE fan and a big Mav fan, this video is like a dream come true.
MAV drive too Steve and do a colab. You take him camping for 2 day and he feeds you 6 different countries meals. That would be an epic video.
The best thing about MREs is that they last a long time and pack fairly small and give you all the caloric and nutritional intake you need to stay in the fight. They aren't gourmet, but they beat eating nothing.
No, eating nothing is far superior
@@Fullsendfilosophy agreed
Good for like 8 years or someshit lol
I had a big bowl of nothing this morning.
Saves on toilet paper.
My spouse is active and literally bought cases for our bunker we plan to build
I’m glad you saw the “rock or something” and also found it amusing, lol. MRE’s individually tend to be pretty decent (there used to be some bad ones; they’ve improved), but after a while it does get pretty “school lunch-y”.
My favorites: the chili mac is pretty great, the veggies crumbles are surprisingly good as you found, and it’s been replaced now but the hash browns are one of the best breakfasts by far.
Especially if you can actually crisp it in a pan.
During this pandemic my family was given a bunch of military food and we enjoyed it and it was conversation starter to every different item. We were grateful indeed ❤ i never thought i love peanut butter more the way those packets have them. Like gourmet exquisite food if you read in the back it tells you where it comes from.
Happy New Year! AMAZING VIDEO!
Tip: When your adding water to the heater, add just a tiny bit. Then roll the bag up from bottom to top and wait a couple of seconds. And you will have the hottest heater possible. Be careful because that mf will scorch your fingers off. When the heater cools down, just roll it again. And you have a scorching heater again. Surprising how many others in the military i have taught this to. But, iv never seen them do it another way after they learned this trick
How does the heater work tho? Confused
@@abraham8772 A magnesium redox that activates by adding water I guess 🤷🏼♂️
I was thinking this exactly the whole time, gotta make sure the water gets in contact with all of the heater pads, roll it around a bit first
This is crazy that it actually heats it up!
Also the beverage base mixes best in lukewarm or warm water, and many of the desserts are improved by heating them
So, my dad developed the retort pouch that mre's are in and when he was trying to see which foods tasted the best in them, we got to try them all. Chili Mac was by far the best, but they also had a chicken a la king back then that was really good. So weird to see how far they've come since then.
When my father died, we had mre's for our post funeral meal. Lol. We had all the varieties the army makes. It was a fun.
This is super cool
@@shubhamvashist8529 it was..we wanted to honor him and his accomplishment..he received no compensation for his work outside of his regular salary, yet he and another man changed the world through their invention. Retort pouches are all over the place. The company he worked for sold it to the U.S. Army and that was the end of it. When he died it was just fitting that we serve them. It was cool trying all of the new stuff.
Sorry about your dad, this was a cool story though. Thanks for sharing
Just came upon your channel this week and i love every video! It has inspired me to travel and youtube .
Apparently the chicken a la king didn't age well, Steve1989 hated it
Im glad i saw this video, it’s very unique and interesting. Love your video man. Hope you make more videos.
Rippling River!!! Great campground. Incredible mountain biking nearby and a good river to swim in during the summer.
I've heard that MREs are based on calories per package which is why some of the chicken and vegetarian meals have really good treats vs the more calorie dense entrées with less calories in snacks.
Also, how awesome of that guy to invite you stay at his lake side hang out after meeting you for the first time.
I've never had an MRE, but I had a factory coworker from the Army Reserve who brought one in for lunch one day. This was back in the 90s and the MREs were different back then. She pulls out this dark brown plastic pouch and I wasn't expecting much, but there was this little lunch tray and all of a sudden she was pulling a full spaghetti dinner out of that pouch complete with garlic bread and laying it all out on the tray! It looked as good as restaurant food and had me drooling! lol. I wasn't expecting it to look that good.
Lol
I love watching Mav's videos. My favourite thing is watching him interact with people. It seems like everyone loves him instantly.
Fr mav is a goat 🐐
chicken chunks and beef stew are the best ones by far. with chicken chunks you put everything it comes with in the tortilla and the beef stew has the best snacks. sour skittles and a vanilla cake

I got M&M's in an MRE once, and they definitely weren't like normal M&M's. They tasted very heat resistant or something. I hear the Chili Mac one is pretty good. The calories in one of these should sustain you for a good part of a day. They pack them with calories for a reason.
mav is like life/human/husband goals and it's almost bittersweet. i just want to go on ONE road trip with him!
Fun fact: Mountain house makes some of the entrees used in long range or winter MREs. It's freeze dried instead of retort pouches like these 3 are. All MREs are also designed to be eaten both cold and warmed depending on situation.

MRE lore:
-5:41 That's toilet paper. In boot camp, 2020, the entire base ran out and we lived off of napkins and at the end of training, the occasional MRE TP. (You only eat 8 mres in boot camp)
-In boot camp, I allmost got beat up because someone thought I stole their lemonade mix.
-In boot camp, you can barter and trade MREs for popular flavors. I did research before hand and became an MRE day-trader to get the best flavors.
-In boot camp, Drill Instructors tell you you're not allowed to eat the gum. I would smuggle it and chew on rucks.
-In boot camp, you're not allowed to mix the drink mix in your canteen. I would mix it in and pretend it was plain water.
-In boot camp, I might have been a bad recruit...
Mav. Big fan. But please drive more careful. I’d hate to see something bad happen, not because of you, but something you can’t control. Stay safe my dude.

Holy Shit, no one is commenting on keeping at least one hand on your steering wheel. I realize you might have modern lane monitoring but machines can malfunction. At 70mph, not enough time to compensate if something screws up, imo.

hey there! army combat engineer here, in the field we usually eat them cold and that’s how they made us do it in boot camp so you get used to it. MREs are like 3,000 calories per bag so we’re usually only allowed to have 2 a day, props to you for eating 3😂
They’re about 1200 calories per bag
3k calories is too much dang dude.
Living the dream, good on you ✌🏻🏴
Great video! Was slightly unnerved watching you have two hands off the wheel while driving, don't crash!!
As fast as we eat it(sugar) we burn it off(great energy source), well I did at least being in the Infantry so I can only speak on behalf of the US Army infantry. Tabasco sauce was always a go to for pretty much every meal to add some extra flavor (in some case add flavor in general). Great video.
Hubs was in the Marine Corps for over 20 years. This is like going down memory lane! Tabasco sauce is a must for many of the MRE's for flavor.
We are only 3.5 hours south of the Soo. Lot's of fishing down here.
Reason they put a lot of carbs and especially sugar in mre is cause of the energy water expenditure. Especially in dry climates like mid east that sucks water from your body. Salt helps hydrate and sugar gives energy but also slows the processing of water in your system from just urinating most out so you get more of the electrolites and such than if you just normally drink water. Adding salt and sugar to your water too is very very good for you. I do it at work and its a massive boost
I’m so paranoid that something can happen while driving on cruise control or whatever it’s called. I just can’t drive like that or get used to the idea of giving up control of my car. It’s absolutely wild to me that someone can take their hands of the steering wheel while doing something else but driving. While driving.i got really anxious here.

Mav, obviously you were raised by parents who enjoyed a very wide variety of food, and introduced you to them. I was too. I remember in Navy boot camp totally enjoying the enormous variety of foods to choose from at chow. I was shocked listening to the other girls complaining through every meal about the food. "That's nasty," was the phrase most used. Their favorite thing to complain about was the taties with the skins still on. "That's nasty." The food was excellent. We did not eat MREs. We ate on the chow line, with everything you can think of for breakfast, and great meals!! It doesn't surprise me that the MREs are good too. Food is one way to help keep moral up!

When you remember what these meals are used for, emergencies etc. you realize why they’re so high sugar high carb loaded. They may not taste the best but they do have to have a long shelf life. Some of them pack bread that is good for 20 years or more. So you can imagine all the preservatives in them as well. Not the best but better than starving.
Emergencies? These are issued to troops for normal eating. Idk where you got that from but they are not for emergencies.
Hey Mav, if you see this I just wanted to make a recommendation for you. If you can find some, I suggest you order some japanese MRE's. I've had the pleasure or eating those a few times and oh man are they incredible. Each one usually comes with two types of rice, white and another style. They also have the beat entrées. My favorite was curry rice with a pork cutlet. They also have many different stir fries with either pork, beef, chicken, or even fish. The fish is always a nice filet of salmon, mackerel, or a type of bass. Just sooooo good, and very filling.
Well, just wanted to pass along a recommendation. Loved this video, I'm a big fan or MRE's. I will warn you though, if you ever see the American MRE cheese omelet......chuck it. The foulest grossest thing I ever put in my mouth.
Have fun in Canada.
You just peaked my interest. Gonna have to go find a couple
Japanese are good, but french RCIR-S are the best, lil harder to make cause you have a little flame stove but workable
I will have to look into this for my hurricane emergency supply storage.
I've never been in the service, but I have family who have been. My cousin was in the service and he told me the only time he had to eat MREs was when they were away from the base. Some referred to it as "on maneuvers" or "in the field". He told me the mess hall food was pretty good depending on which base you were station at. He once sent me a box of MREs but I can't remember if I liked them or not because this was back in 1987.

We had those too. I enjoyed them.
im pretty sure they still make it unless i just had an old MRE from before it discontinued but they also have cappuccino and irish cream drink mixes now and theyre my favorite
@6:57 MRE's aren't the healthiest with all the sugar and preservatives, but you burn a lot of calories wearing 70+ lbs of gear all day. #13 (I think, may have been 12) Cheese Tortellini was my favorite. Best main course and snacks in my opinion. Spaghetti wasn't bad either.
Edit: Also if you eat mostly MREs they can make you constipated. Rumor had it the gum had laxative in it to help with that. Not sure if that was true.
