Can’t believe this was 20yrs ago already! Still an iconic scene!
I actually watched this episode and it became talk of the classroom after the school holidays.
3:04 Lets all stand around in silence and watch Tiff die, nobody check to see if she is alright or call for an ambulance or anything.
My god, Tiffany was one of Eastenders most loveable characters, she should never have been killed off...
I strongly agree. They should have kept Grant and Tiffany together, and let them be happy. It would have been so nice to see them start to get on well and have their second child, enjoy a stronger relationship and become the square's golden couple which I feel fans like me would have loved. I genuinely believe Grant and Tiffany would have won Best Onscreen Partnership at the future British Soap Awards. Grant never got to have children when he was married to his first wife, Sharon, which is what he always really wanted, as the truth about her sleeping with Phil came out and ruined all that in October 1994 (Sharongate), just like the truth about Grant's affair with Tiffany's mum, Louise, destroyed his and Tiffany's plans to have another baby, enjoy a happy Christmas and a happy future. Very sad! ☹ Instead, they could have had Tiffany become a singer on the show whilst continuing with her massage work to earn an extra income, with Grant being the perfect husband and happily supporting her decision, and actress Martine McCutcheon receive a higher salary to keep her in the show, instead of this sick storyline involving Grant's affair with Louise, and Tiffany's death thereafter which was so horrible. Alternatively, Grant, Tiffany and Courtney could have left the square together for a fresh start, have their second child, and regularly keep in touch with friends and family from their new home, and also have them visit them sometimes. That would have been such a happy ending. If I was the boss of the show, I would let some couples have happy endings, keep them together, and would have definitely kept Grant and Tiffany together forever.
@@Zedd1500 it's drama. Where's the drama if the two of them live happily ever after, have 2.4 children and go on two holidays a year? She may not have liked her character getting killed off but it brought the story full-circle because after treating her like crap Grant realised he loved her after all when it was too late.
@@stephenmcconnell1000 absolutely agree. Drama and sentiment seldom go hand in hand and killing Tiff off prevented her from coming back years later as a mere facet of her former self (a la Mel, Kat, Lisa and a thousand others) and sets the stage for Grant's eventual departure later that year.
@@scottyunitedboy2925 Ross kemp would have left anyway whether she was in it or not.
Unfortunately her exit wasn't her choice. In a You Can't Fire Me tv series she revealed that they'd decided to axe her character
Tiffany was gorgeous
Joe Stewart-Paul what did Terry say to Tiffany?
She also had a lovely voice
But very chavvy.
dead gorgeous
I was too but then I got a beer belly
so she survives falling down the stairs which gave her a severe blood clot to the head, but she doesn't survive being hit by a car going at about 5mph, that's understandable.
She was not fully recovered from the previous accident when Frank hit her with the car. She'd had a head injury already so when her head went down against the pavement, it was too much for her body to take.
Messylin Still not convincing!
Francesca Stout No pleasing some people
Essex Boi It's only a soap opera.
Yes, that's right, it is a soap opera :-)
Awwww Tiff. I loved her. Martine McCutcheon I met her in Sheffield in 2000 in HMV. She was lovely and so chatty I stood talking to her for ages. I was gutted when they wrote her out of it. X x 😢😢😭😭❤️❤️💔💔
So that was her perfect moment with you then. Just had to say it!
Cool
isit me or has phil witnessed or been involved with pretty much every death in the square?
ahh definitely in some way it's madd
Phil the bad man 😂😂
You all seem to be forgetten one thing tho! 2 weeks before remember tiffany was hospitalised and almost died at one point, so having her head knocked to the floor is what would have killed her character easily. not the car that was driving at 10miles per hour on a icy road.
Grant's performance was superb here. One of the rare moments he really seemed scared and regretful.
*Ross Kemp's performance.
Grant was being himself.
Everyone just casually standing around waiting for her to die instead of calling an ambulance wtf😂
The Butcher's should really have their licenses revoked. First Frank and now Janine.
Goldenrod636 Ricky (ran over Pauline in the 80s, but she survived); Pat (knocked down and killed a young girl in the early 90s); Frank (Tiffany in the late 90s); and Janine (Danielle in the late 2000s), in that order. Interesting how the victims are all females. The Butchers should definitely have their licences revoked.
Pat killed Stephanie Watson with her car in 1992, Frank hit and killed Tiffany Mitchell with his Ford sedan on New Year's Eve 1998, and the Butcher's daughter, Janine, killed Danielle Jones with her red Alfa Romeo on 2nd April 2009.
@@rileysutton633 Ricky also hit Pauline with his car in 1989
Can't believe its 22 years since this awful mistake in Eastenders history was made. Tiff was only 22 herself here 😢
remember watching this, hard to believe it's 20 years ago now
Why is it when ANYBODY gets killed everybody just watches and never thinks to ring an ambulence?
Because they know that it's the end of an era! 😂
they’re probably shocked
Because its scripted obviously.. Soaps aren't documentaries.. Its made up.. And it's ambulance
@OnlySoaps I would have beaten Grant senseless he could have saved her
Oh my God. Who HASN'T died on Albert Square? Some people have even died more than once!
Probably the most devastating moment in all the history of EastEnders.
It really was. She didn't deserve this.
The Mitchell sisters deaths was far worse.
@How Marvellous Am I No its not. A lot of people liked them.
@@VictoryRRR Their death scene wasn’t even sad, just ridiculous.
@@H.K.5 I never meant that they were. It was worse as in left a bigger impact on the show as a loss.
Biggest mistake Eastenders writers ever made was killing off Tiffany. She was a extremely popular character that could of had huge longevity, even with Martine Mcutchen wanting to persue a music career the door should of always been left open for a return.
So true and she was so unfairly treated when you look at the likes of Charlie Brooks, Letitia Dean, Patsy Palmer & Lacey Turner nowadays. They come and go as they like when they like. Shocking.
BucklandsP3 I think they let those actresses do that because they realised the mistake they made with Martine McCutchen.
If I was in a soap and I wanted to leave I would want to 'die' in a fire or disappear out to see (bit like Harold in neighbours) so it's a dramatic last scene but you could always return. Must be incredibly frustrating for actors who decided to leave and be killed off then years later want to come back but can't. People change over the years, they might try other things but find that their true love was soap acting
But if Tiffany hadn't died then Bianca wouldn't have had her own Tiffany, can't have two people with the same name on the square at the same time, its against the law.
Backups5DayZ Mcgee they had billy michell and Carols son Billy in it at the same time. Don't think it was for long though.
LMAO, that car was going barely any speed at all.
If the car was speeding then it would of looked like a hit and run then
How the hell would that have killed her ???????
+Chloe Lane lol I was hit by a car that fast walking home from school and I got up and carried on
+Life Of Patrick speed doesn't matter when it comes to being hit by a car. It depends how you land etc. You were just clearly lucky
Noah Hill sorry ☺
I love the nosy neighbours they come out from every Bush when something happens 😂 that bit is like most areas 🤣
I remember this scene. This happend on News years eve, in year 1998. xxxx ☺ ☺
Forgotten how bad it looked - loved how no one tries CPR etc
God this still makes me cry...
Martine McCutcheon apparently heard of this plan for her character's demise when she was driving in her car and listening to the news on the radio, woah-oh-oh-oh, on the radio. True.
Mal Young is a bastard. He's now begun a new reign of terror on The Young and the Restless, god help them all over in Genoa City.
Just saw it air today on Drama. Iconic era for the show.
This must've been on of the rare few times in Soap Opera history when we've actually seen a character die before our very eyes. Any other time it's been a case of the incident happens, someone cradles them, camera's off them (the moment they actually die) then camera's back on them and they're dead.
This was for me, someone who has followed this show from the start, the saddest moment of the show. I
The Tiffany in this video was Grant's wife/ Bianca's best friend. Bianca named her girl Tiffany after her best friend.
I was 4 years old when this happened and didn't watch the show up until 3 years ago! I wish Tiffany/Martine McCutcheon was still in EE.
Most tragic soap moment of all them all. Still remember crying my eyes out as a teenager watching this scene. Yes it was impactful and highly memorable but not in a good way as the character did not deserve such a bleak ending after so much suffering at the hands of Grant. 😢
Ahhhhh that's why Bianca named her child Tiffany !! Didn't know they were bessies!
EastEnders tend to go for a quick, dramatic moment which increasingly involves killing characters off. But popular characters don't come easy, as they've discovered over the past 15 years or more, so it should make clear sense to them to quit closing the door on possible future returns. They've had to resurrect Kathy, Dirty Den. They even approached Pam St. Clement for a possible permanent comeback for Pat... yeah right, good luck explaining that. They'd jump at the chance to bring back Tiffany, but it's hard to write a comeback for someone whose ashes were seen being scattered into the sea. This was at a time when the show was bigger than its stars (or so they thought.), but they were burning bridges which they've really struggled to try and repair ever since.
Yep, killing big characters off like Mark, Pat, Kathy, Cindy etc is some of the dumbest shit Eastenders has ever done. They even killed Peggy off lol. At least Coronation Street kinda tries to keep their most beloved characters.
Cheap audience gathering. But its hard to produce lovable characters in the pc era of today,, where characters have no personality or likable attributes,, when they do bring older characters back they need to be written for a pc audience hence they are just like the other 5000 boring characters. The late 90s early 00s was the dying embers, some great storylines back then.
Some of you forget that some actors request to be killed off, though. Tiffany? Yeah, she was killed as revenge for deciding to leave. But Peggy, Barbara Windsor asked to be killed off. Even Pam St. Clement understood that Pat had to die for her to leave the Square because nothing would move Pat. Sometimes an actor quits and the character has to die to facilitate that departure.
@@hkazu63 Windsor and Clements it makes sense to kill them off as both were in their 70s and both wereleaving to retire remember, to enjoy their golden years like most people do. It only makes sense to kill them off as bad health and death to the actual actors that comes with old age is much more likely.
@@therebel4332 Oh for god's sake, you can't blame everything on PC culture.
Tiffany Mitchell, STILL to this day had the best exit out of any character in Walford. The saddest, most shocking but ultimately, the least they could do was NOT kill her off in the first place!
It was the saddest soap opera death I've ever seen. She had suffered so much at grant's hands and he got the happy ending she deserved.
Yeah, "Happy" ending. 1998 was the best year for Eastenders in the 90s.
Loving the way they all just stand there looking at her ... LMAO, "Somebody call an ambulance FFS !!"
No one even tried CPR? That's ridiculous! I miss East Enders!
I remember crying when this happened she was my favourite character and it took a while to like Grant again
I love EastEnders, I've been watching it since 1997 when I was 5 and I always will, it's the best programme on TV. :)
Didn't you ever find it scary to watch at 5-years-old? I used to be scared of Grant, and I was older - about 11 at the time. Then he soon became my favourite character.
who would you blame for Tiffany's death
Grant = like
Frank = comment
Frank
What do we do for Ted?
@@charlieinfinite9434 who?
Ted... he was driving the car.
@@charlieinfinite9434 i thought it was frank??
Sad thing is Grant realised he really loved Tiffany but he realised it too late.
no he didn't, he was incapable of love. He wanted the kid.
Grant is too manipulative and likable by millions of fans, many don't know he is not a saint.
They shouldn't have killed Tiffany off it was a mistake as she was so popular with viewers and could've been in it many more years by now as I'm sure Martine McCutcheon would've returned.
smck 2016 she was upset when she found she was dying
J Red panda I know she heard on the car radio. She had every intention of returning.
smck 2016 no she left to start a music career which she sucked at
They were pissed off at her making the character popular, trying to cash in a music career, then use the show as a safety net. So they killed her off as revenge.
Like steve owen
Still to this day the saddest exit from the show along with Ethel's.
No it wasn't lol. Ronnie and Roxy's death was worse.
@How Marvellous Am I yes it was. The Mitchell sisters will always be better than Tiffant.
Ah I loved Martine McCutcheon as Tiffany RIP Tiffany I met her where I live shes lovely and is always smiling x x
I remember watching this on xmas day. Loved Tiffany and Martine is GREAT actress.
New year's eve do you mean
This was the perfect moment!
+cockshield - Tiff went to paradise skies LOL
I hate the EastEnders scriptwriters forever more for killing off Tiffany played by the beautiful and talented Martine McCutheon. Honestly cannot believe this is 20 years ago today!
Agree she could've and would've returned and no doubt battled with Sharon. Would've been epic.
I hate them for killing off the Mitchelle sisters and Mel Owen.
Jamie and Danielle had also suffered the same fate as Tiffany, even Max but he got away it because Lauren who was driving was going at snail's pace. Pat herself went through the same experience as Frank just did six years previously where she unexpectedly ran down a young girl exept Pat was driving too fast and had exceeded her alcohol consumption limit.
I CRYED my eyes out watching this new years eve 1999 😢😢
Peggy’s threatening to shop Grant to the police for snatching Courtney away from Tiffany but 4 years later, she’s encouraging Phil to snatch Louise away from Lisa
Still the saddest death in Eastenders history... I remember watching it with my mum the night it aired, and we both balled our eyes out... And I was a fully grown man! Haha
Alan Hansen how did she die?
Ronnie's daughter Danielle was the saddest EE death for me. Just as her mother realised & they were about to be reunited.
she hit her head
Carl Rees Danielle’s Death was just a rip-off of Tiffany’s
Sadest EE Death definetly Ashley
Scene makes me cry every time miss tiff
This was the moment Grant finally realised he loved Tiffany. Such a sad ending.
I don’t think he ever loved her tbh
@@alannahfidler3418 agreed, i think he was glad she was gone so he had the child.
@@shanefolan stupid producer getting abuser Grant the happy ending he didn’t deserve. While killing off poor Tiffany! 😔
@@startracker5895 exactly
Oh yeah right he snatched her child away from her he was evil
i loved tiff, I was heart broken when she died!
the best scene was when Bianca run Louise out of town
is that why Bianca's daughter is called Tiffany?
Yes! Bianca and Tiffany were best friends.
👌🏾
Yh plus me mam named me after tiffany Mitchell to
I stopped watching in 2002... it's weird catching up now and seeing all these young adults with old "connections" like Courtney or Steve Owen's son, or Bianca's daughter Tiffany... like going back to your village 20 years later
@@Sawrattan That's why I still watch it. The characters have so much history. Context and depth makes the stories so much deeper when the characters grew up and developed alongside you, had kids of their own, died etc.
Haha. I remember how dramatic this was when it first aired though.
She was my fav character, wish we saw more of her :(
RIP Tiff. Loved her.
Love the guy at 2:59 who comes to have a look with his drink in hand LMAO
i've never noticed that until now. what a wonderful observation!
I can't believe how long ago this was, remember watching it almost like it was yesterday I was only 12 at the time lol.
I watch this scene every Nye…. I was devastated when she died. I actually cried. I was so invested in Tiffany 🥺
Same and had she only been allowed to leave alive as originally planned I'm positive Martine wouldve returned many times by now. Unfortunately the power hungry narcissist Matthew Robinson wouldn't allow this to happen.
It was a mistake to kill her off. She had overcome so much to survive Grant. It wasn’t fair he got to live and take their child.
Frank holds the world record for accidentally killing the most people.
Frank din't kill her Grant did by standing there and watching her bleed to death when she hit her head on the edge of the sidewalk
@@aprilgosa5779 it was an accident
I was crying for hours when this first aired.
Amazing episode… I cried my eyes out when Tiffany died. If EE had any sense they would bring back Grant and Courtney. And Peggy!
I think Eastenders should do a spooky theme with Jean when she drinks too much and having helusinations and goes out to have some fresh air only to see ghost figures of all the past Eastenders dead cast walking towards a light.
Funny!
I remember this episode 31st of December 1998 it was sad and a shame that they killed her off because she was such a great character
They should've left the door open.
+Chris Dawson 17 years ago tonight wow I am old.
+BucklandsP3 If only they hadn't killed her off
Year i agree with you on that one she was lush
Chris Dawson It's as unnecessary as the deaths of Pat and Dennis Rickman
2:42 Had to be that head collision with the pavement that killed her rather than the car!!!!!!! ;*(
Nothing compares to when Steve Owen died, that was a tense episode.
Yeah, I remember the way he went out with a bang.
:'( they are smoking in the pub... i want to go back to those days
Recorded on 31st December 1998
OMG PEGGYS HAIR!
OMG PAULINE!
OMG BIANCA!
OMG PHIT WITH BROWN HAIR!
OMG GRANT!
lmao they all changed
aahah
x
“Quick, call an ambulance!”... “Nah, lets all stare moodily at the kerb instead”. Classic EastEnders!
these were the days x
Although I do truly believe Grant loved her during the last few weeks of her death, she was still seccond best and loved Sharon more.
True she was always in Sharon’s shadow where grant was concerned
How I feel with every person 😔
I watched this when I was about 9 years old (20 years ago). I remember being really scared of Grant & feeling sorry for Tiffany
Samuel Coe I used to be scared of Grant too when he was with Sharon, but he soon became my favourite character. I really wanted things between him and Tiffany to go well. What a shame it had to be ruined! I blame her horrid mum, Louise!
Frank butcher what legend sadly missed
the fact that they all stand there instead of calling an ambulance bugs me
Tiffany Raymond was the blueprint for characters like Stacey Slater. Don’t underestimate what a huge impact she made on this show.
I'm convinced she's the reason they cast Charlie Brooks aswell as it was so obvious at the time due to her resemblance to Martine.
@@rayoflight6505 one of Janine’s more twisted schemes was to make herself look like Tiffany so Terry could warm up to her.
Tiffany was better. Stacey is too much of a tart plus she’s annoying. They’re somewhat similar as characters but definitely not the same.
Yes, Martine had real boobies. Much better than other *Eastbenders* slappers that came later.
Her headband was certainly recycled onto both of them (Janine and Stacey) at one time or another. I think I’ve even seen Chelsea #1 donning it a few times…………and Marie from the Cafe come to think of it!
I think I'm still mourning Tiffany's death lol loved her character
I remember watching this so sad
Grant was not a real man when it came to women as he was abusive both physically and emotionally as well as controlling towards them. He did not understand women.
Not many people do
Both Mitchells brothers were the same
That's not an excuse for being abusive, every relationship has it struggles. That's why I remain single, amongst many other things, I don't understand women (not many men do I find), but I try not be abusive to them. I'll be honest with you I don't really want to. If they didn't like or understand women, why did the spend so much time chasing them? Must have been a fairly insecure dude.
None of them things, it was actually the show writers that made me a dick
You are so right they have killed off and written out too many core character's and legacy kids for no reason.
The connection between the car and Tiffany was to smooth
I loved Tiffany. Was so sad when she died.
I was watching Classic Eastenders on the Drama channel recently, and they missed this episode out for some reason.
that's stupid they all just Stand there and watch instead of trying to help
Eastenders at it's BEST!
One if the most memorable deaths.
After she did this seen she went on to sing this is my perfect moment. Wonder if she still sings songs.
She released an album in 2017 called Lost and Found it charted in the top 20.
Tiffany’s death scene was sad it was done in slow motion but Jamie Mitchell’s death look more realistic
I remember watching this episode when I was a child. I always thought Tiffany and Janine were the same person because of the striking resemblance. Then when she died and Janine came into it I was so confused 😂😂 I was like “is Tiffany not dead anymore”😆
I remember this I was 13 21 years since she died this will down in history
This was tragic i remember watching this at the time i was so upset Tiffany was the best .
She should never have been killed, damn why do I feel so nostalgic about a character I never watched at the time as I was born in March 98'...
She was a great character. Martine made her so relatable.
thanks for that :)
What an absolutely gorgeous girl Martine McCutcheon is.
02:42 just when Tiffanys on the bonnet of the car you can hear the sound of a man groaning like he's just been hit. Who or what was that? Lol
But that was Frank Butcher. It didn't sound like him to me! Lol
2:39 bloody hell I forgot how intense those Specsaver ads used to be
I remember this episode. So realistic how she didn't say anything before she died.
the saddest episode ever in eastenders
@BucklandsP3 Should also mention Martine's cameo in the video for Morrissey's "The Boy Racer"
