Yh Phil was out of shape, paranoid, insecure and had confidence issues at this point in his life. It was good Grant returned to boost him up and help with his confidence. It's weird because Phil was still quite tough but embarrassed himself in moments like when he struggled to beat up Johnny the has been villian.
