Phil have you seen Sturgill Simpson "Never go to town again" live Sunday Valley pickathon. I'd love to hear what you think of Sturgill
You MUST listen to POLYPHIA-G.O.A.T.
YOU'LL BE BLOWN AWAY!!💯💥💯🤯
Could you do analysis of Frank Zappa and Samantha Fish
Thank you.
I recorded that when my first daughter was born and still have the tape of that performance and VCR but, hadn’t listened to it.
Now she’s 20 and on her own.
He was definitely great.
Has to be one of the greai
-east singers of any era!
My dad was the drummer for BJ for over 20 years. He is actually in this video. ❤️ We loved BJ like he was our uncle growing up. ❤️ Thank you for the video. ❤️
maybe add some nice anecdotes :)
💜
Brittany, many thanks for sharing your story about your Dad. I am a drummer, since I was 15 years old. I have a great story to share with you. I was a Sheriff for 28 years. One day on patrol, I received a complaint on my beat about a loud band. When I arrived at the house in question, I was met with a 5 member band, who were playing all the old classics. The band had this excellent girl singer. The age of the band members ranged around 16 to 18 years of age. I don’t know how this happened, but I asked the girl singer if I could sit in on a few songs. All of them were blown away and the first song we played was Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones. Before I knew it, there were about 25 kids watching us play. The guy who had complained about the loud music, went ballistic on me when he saw me playing with the band. It was one of the highlights of my Police career. 👍👍👍👍
So sorry for your loss. I loved B.J.Thomas.❤😥
Cool! Just plain cool to have had that familial connection.
My wife and her mom saw BJ Thomas at the Crazy Horse in Santa Ana, Ca. My wife's mom was handicapped and sitting off to the side of the stage. After the concert was done, he came up to her and asked her if she enjoyed the concert. She was tongue tied and flustered...but enjoyed it all. Speaks volumes about what type of person BJ was. Rest in peace, sir!
😭👍
Saw him live in 65 on the Gene Pitney show with The McCoys Chad and Jeremy Norma tanega and he was a amazing he sang Billy and Sue which was his first fit on hickory records and then I'm so lonesome I could cry almost as good as Hank Williams
@@donaldshaw2627 yes I loved that one!
He was a class act and the real deal. RIP, BJ.💜He brought joy to so many people with that incredible voice.
BJ, many thanks for sharing your beautiful music with all of us. Your music and legacy will live on forever in history. Rest In Peace 🌹🌹🌹
He had such a rich voice. Death is inevitable for us all, but at least we have all these recordings to remember BJ Thomas by. Rest easy,BJ.
50 albums I think!
Fil I want thank you for this video from the bottom of my heart. I have been BJs Tour Manager for the last 15 years. I witnessed night after night the incredible talent this man had and the love and respect for his audience. He truly loved what he was blessed to do in life.
I love your vlog and have watched you since the pandemic started! Keep up the good work and thank you again ❤!
Tim Bowers, Nashville TN
B.J. Thomas was born in Oklahoma and raised in Houston, Texas. RIP B.J. Thanks Fil for being such a cool presenter of ALL kinds of music and musicians.
Yes, but Arlington claims him as one of our own.
@@amyk9175, you are correct about Arlington claiming B.J. as one of its own. Not sure when he moved there after being born in Hugo, Oklahoma, then the family moved to Houston (where B.J. was raised and went to high school), and lastly, he and his wife lived in Arlington where he passed away. Hope this clears things up for you.
@@carmellaallegretto-baker711 I wasn’t doubting his ties to Houston and Oklahoma. I’ve lived in Arlington all my life and know those around here refer to him as “Arlington’s own.”
@@amyk9175, I see. Thanks for responding. Also, can you tell me when he moved to Arlington? I've never actually heard when he moved there. Would love to know. Plus, did you ever attend any of his concerts?
@@carmellaallegretto-baker711 I have investigated and can’t pin down when he moved to Arlington. My best guess would be in the 70s or 80s. I know he was here by the 90s. He played a fundraising concert for Levitt Pavilion several years ago and I regret passing on that opportunity. I never heard him live but his music (from Raindrops to Theme from Growing Pains) has been ubiquitous throughout my life.
I had no idea he passed. One of the best vocalists ever to perform. He delivered a note in a way that clung on and on giving a masterful and unique sound with feeling of gentleness and smoothness with an almost echoing effect. I cannot describe it any better because there is no way to explain it. Phil can put it into words and beautifully by the way. I listen to BJ often. Love his songs and sound
Lost a short battle with lung cancer and passed away last Saturday. 😢
One mark of a true artist such as him, is that when they sing their hits for maybe the 1000th time, they still deliver a performance with feeling and connection to their fans.
EXCELLENT POINT!
I agree! Engelbert had that quality as well. I love both!
His rendition of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" was the most beautiful and heart-rending ever! The fact that he continued to sound this good for so many years was truly remarkable!! RIP, BJ.
Aww, I didn't know he passed away. Just listening to this makes me emotional. Great old love songs....sigh. Thanks, Fil!
Remember those songs coming out of the stereo in my car! 📻🎶🎶
I knew he passed but I didn't get emotional until seeing this. It didn't seem real until listening to him sing.
@@ronileigh9336 Same here! That's when all his songs came pouring back into some fond memories!
He died about a week and half ago of lung cancer
I didn't know he passed either I grew up with the songs my how time passes by thanks BJ Thomas
B.J. had a wonderful, distinctive voice, one of those singers you could identify after his first few notes. And he had hit after hit during his prime. He also had a strong rapport with the audience, as can be seen on this video. He was a great talent, and he will be missed. Thanks Fil for an excellent analysis and a nice memory of a fine artist and performer. Rest In Peace B.J.
EASILY ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGERS OF ALL TIME REST IN PEACE AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE AMAZING AND UNFORGETTABLE SONGS YOU LEFT BEHIND
this just shows wht I believed since 1972 He has the greatest male voice ever and Karen Carpenter female. He was performing at a tractor pull in Mt. Vernon Wa. 1984. I had the honer of talking to him for 20 minutes
I remember sitting in a ski lodge, listening to BJ Thomas on the Lodge radio, with my hot chocolate, and feeling warm and toasty. His music always gives me a warm ,fuzzy happy feeling.
Debra Virden, you hit the nail on the head. This is exactly the kind of emotion BJ Thomas voice creates. It gets us hooked on a feeling huh !!!! Oh yessss. Legendary vocalist.
Yes his voice is ubiquitous it was every where.
One of the most unique and recognizable voices ever. He will be missed. RIP Mr Thomas.
He never left a note out hanging by itself. He always added a interesting twist.
I met BJ once and he was the sweetest most humble man. Fell in love with his voice when I was 10. I just hate it that he's gone.
His rendition of Hank Williams I’m so lonesome I could cry is the best. He did it as a young man and then again a few years ago, breathtaking at about 72 years of age at that time.
In the mid 1980's I saw B.J. Thomas play at a local fairground he did a 25 to 35 minute set. I was in the 5th row he put on a good show.
(Rest in Peace) B.J. Thomas thanks for all the great recording, television appearances, concerts footages and all you left behind.
I loved him and I was a teenager and I sang ,"I'm Hooked on a Feeling "Constantly and still Remember every word and I'm 68 now!My mom died of Ovarian Cancer at 45, in 1975 and she and I would sing ," Raindrops Keep falling on my head " and she loved him and I am so Sad to hear of his death, and what a fighter! I'll never forget him!! R.I.P.
I had such a crush on BJ when I was a little girl in the early 70s! I just loved his voice & his songs (and beautiful blue eyes/black hair! He was a good looking man!) so much! Such a shame that most people don't even know who he was or that he had so many hits. Thanks for covering him hon. RIP BJ...you will be missed by those who knew you, your songs & your beautiful voice 🙏
Thank you Fil for sharing. B.J. Thomas was really big in the late 60s and 70s.... R.I.P.
Very, very interesting Phil. Never thought of the Mike placement. BJ Thomas has a voice like Karen Carpenter. You instantly know who you're listening to. A flat 4 seems pretty awesome when you consider his age. Thankyou very much for honoring BJ Thomas. RIP, Mr. Thomas.
You are exactly right...one of those voices you know, but you don't know you know, a very lovely voice and this was a lovely tribute to him. So many interesting elements, thank you!
He had such a distinctive voice. I was fortunate to see him perform a couple of years ago he sounded great!! R.I.P. B.J.🌹
I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. B.J. Thomas only twice in person, but his vocal performances stand among the very best for me. Thanks Fil for focusing on the technical aspects of his mic management as well as his vocal range, dynamic control, and emotive use of vibrato and range to accentuate the feelings of the song at the moment. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🎶💪🏻
“Hooked on a Feeling” was an extraordinary popular song in the USA and “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” became a career calling card as well. I enjoy your videos that offer exposure of the music of my life to new generations and that you present your analysis with an open mind as well. 🙏 Keep up the good work, Fil … Rock! 🎸🎤🎶
Most of all and I just can't help believing are my favorite.
His voice is so beautiful and peaceful. Thank you Fil for your wonderful analysis on him. RIP B.J.
Love BJ Thomas thanks 🙏 didn’t know he passed away. Fil love the respect you have for other artists.
✨ B.J. Thomas ✨
Rest in peace
Thank you, Fil 🖤
His version of I'm So Lonesome I could Cry is phenomenal.
He was a great stylist, great voice, great gentleman who had a hard life with addiction
RIP Mr. Thomas... And, thank-you Fil for another great analysis.. and a few memories too!
B.J Thomas was always a staple on radio when l was growing up. So many great songs. Always loved his distinctive immediately recognizable voice. Sadly another great artist taken by cancer. Excellent analysis as always Fil. Thanks. 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦🇨🇦
Aww what a beautiful voice! RIP BJ. Thank you Fil 💕
BJ was such a great singer. We’re losing so many wonderful voices. Thank you Fil for helping keep them out there so they’re not forgotten.
Yes, thank you Phil!
Fabulous to watch! I learned so much about mic technique today, thanks Fil. I've seen Celine Dion and Barbara Streisand use similar techniques.
Never has there been an artist with such grace, control over his voice to use it as a complete instrument to deliver the story of his songs.. someone I followed through his beautiful conversation to Christianity and that message, he not only sang about, but lived!! Thank you Jesus for creating him for this space in time.. PTL..
This past Saturday night my buddy called me to come over and practice a couple tunes and we did "I Just Can't Help Believing" because we're going to play it Sunday night at an open-mic. Sunday evening before we headed out we heard the news. BJ, RIP. ❤️ Thanks Fil for your heartfelt efforts and knowledge. ❤️💪👍
Hi Fil! Hadn’t commented yet, but want you to know this medley was pure magic! BJ had that magical sound...I just knew whenever I would hear his voice I would pause to listen....he had that quality that superseded just musical talent...he was a truly nice person...that was evident whenever he walked on stage! ✌️
Elvis loved BJ. and I too....I Just can't help Believing..Elvis did a great rendition...and I Loved Elvis's collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic on this Tune.....thanks Fil
Hi Mark! I will have to look that one up! In this video I thought BJ was doing kind of an Elvis thing with his feet, too!
@@lynndow3185 Hello Lynn
To make sure we all could move about the dance floor at our senior prom, we had dance class in the gym. My partner and I won the competition using "Raindrops keep fallin' on my head." RIP B.J., and thank you Fil for this insightful tribute x
Oh, I wish I could have seen that. I bet it was great.
BJ Thomas was a soothing singer. I loved his songs. "Mighty Clouds of Joy" was one of my favorites. Thank you Fil for giving a tribute to this wonderful singer.
That was a great song!!
Rest In Peace B.J Thomas 🕊💜
BJ’s vocal inflections are so unique. His voice was one of a kind with such a pleasant tone.
Loved his voice. That sexy, sweet, romantic and melodious voice that crossed many genres. A true artiste unlike todays. fly by night singers. Thank you for informing us what a genius he was at handling and using his microphone to get that best voice to entertain all of us. Sing for Jesus, BJ now that you are with HIM.
Fil, you have impeccable taste in musicians and musicianship.
I'm a fan. He's one of the best voice in history. You should listen to original version. All the best.😥😢😭 RIP B.J. we missed you.
Thank you, Fil, for such a great analysis of a truly remarkable man who will be so greatly missed by all of his fans. His contributions to the music world were immense and his songs will live on forever. RIP, B.J.
I was lucky enough to back up BJ Thomas and other celebs at an evetn in the late 80's. Really nice guy with no attitude at all. Also want to say I love your reaction / analysis videos - they are a real pleasure to watch!
I enjoyed listening to this
RIP BJ Thomas. So sad to hear he passed. 😢. He was also one of my major crushes when I was a kid.
One of the great voices of our time. I was fortunate to see him in concert a few times. Thank you for this excellent analysis.
Thank you so much for this analysis after the sad news of his passing.
He was the cool but sweet guy next door. His sweet personality shined through over the years. I saw him in a small venue in about 34 yrs ago. Got to meet him and get an autographed photo. One of my highlights in life. 💙💙. Love you BJ.
If Fil was going to do an analysis concentrating on vocal ability why not B.J. Thomas? I am going to watch for this mic technique in other videos, with other singers. B.J.'s death is sad. As a fan I grieve. I will say that I do get a kind of closure when Fil features these artists that pass. What else can we do but celebrate the music? B.J. was from Houston TX.Thanks Fil. Oh,new term. Dulcet tone. adjective. pleasant to the ear; melodious: the dulcet tones of the cello. pleasant or agreeable to the eye or the feelings; soothing. Archaic.
BTW, Dulce is Spanish for sweet.
So sad he passed. FASCINATING analysis!!!! I'd NEVER had noticed any of this and your analysis makes it much more interesting.
Beautiful voice.....RIP.
God blessed us with this man and his beautiful voice. I was so in love with his songs back in the day. Now he's gone to Heaven to be with God. We miss you B.J.
It's a great pleasure when the brilliant British guy with the silky smooth voice analyzes another artist with a silky smooth voice. Thanks Fil. Never quite appreciated Mr. Thomas' voice and technical prowess till this video.
We saw him at Turning Stone casino, (near Syracuse, NY). Fantastic show and showmanship, without technology dumped all over everything. No loud pyrotechnics, no 50 back-up singers and dancers. Just the band, the man, and his talent. We had stage-side seats, and I sat with my fingertips on the edge of the stage for 2 hours. He was so close, I could see the teeny stitches in the hem of his trousers (of his beautifully cut gray Italian double-breasted suit). He took the time to shake hands with everyone who came up to the stage. One of the best nights! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thanks, Fil!
BJ Thomas An ol’ fave!
Thank you , thank you, and thank you, Fil One of the best analysis. Especially of one of my favorite singers. His music will always be a part of my life. I cried and smiled. Again thank you
Fil,
Thanks for recognizing the tremendous talent of this truly great gentleman.
When my daughter got sick, she asked me to sing Raindrops to her in the hospital emergency room.
I was a singer in my youth but had crippling stage fright and never pursued music.
Today I hit the karaoke places without fear and am having a great time.
All thanks to my daughter and BJ Thomas.
Thanks for this memorial, to one of the greatest vocalists of my lifetime. Started listening after watching Butch and Sundance. Like all his fans, sorry to hear of his passing.
Thanks much for reacting to B.J. Thomas. He's not noticed by many reactors.
TY for this. He could certainly sing any type of music. Always loved him. RIP B.J.
He kept his amazing voice to the very end. His vibrato never began to lag with age and his falsetto was excellent as heard in a relatively recent performance of “Don’t Worry Baby”.
I didn't think BJ sang falsetto that sounds like Brian or Carl Wilson of the Beachboys
Was looking forward to your look at BJ Thomas, Fil, and it's so lovely.
I appreciated that his voice was beautiful and that he sang with feeling, but never knew how he was finessing the sound in such a detailed way. You singers have a lot going on!!
Thanks so much Fil.
My older sister used to be a desk clerk at one of the finer hotels, and she said one night BJ Thomas came up to the desk to check in after a concert ...and he was such a nice & friendly gentleman. He stayed at the desk and talked with her a good while.
I think he had such a unique & recognizable voice.
Hope you have a great week, Fil 💙
Had forgotten how often B. J, Thomas was on the radio during the 60s and 70s. Loved the tone of his voice, and the naturalness of his performances. Fil, have you done any analysis of Johnny Cash, would love to see an analysis of his guitar skill set, and his singing.
He's here somewhere!
Thank you for this one Fil. Not everyone knew his name but everyone knew his songs. He truly let his music represent him. He will be missed.
Nice. Rest in peace, BJ Thomas.
Fave among many would be Hooked On A Feeling.
Also my fave use of a Vinnie Bell Electric Sitar. Pretty sure he played on the track,
Hey first!! I've been subscribed for a really long time your videos are amazing your love and appreciation for all kinds of music shows I really appreciate all your hard work wings of Pegasus for life !!!
Thanks!
BRILLIANT BREAKDOWN! I had the pleasure of seeing B.J sing in Las Vegas about a dozen times! He was amazing EVERY TIME! He was also one of most humble cats I've ever met! MAJESTIC VOCALIST!
What a timely and wonderful analysis of BJ. Very sad he has passed. His silky smooth voice will always be remembered. He made singing on stage look easy because he was naturally gifted. Saw him once live and he came out after the show and signed cd's, took pictures, etc. I was lucky to have met him for even a minute of his time on this earth. Thanks for the lovely tribute, Fil..... RIP BJ.
You always are so respectful of these dynamic artists.. thank you Fil.
I loved this song. I just loved to hear him sing. Didn't know that we'd lost him...😥
BJ had the perfect voice for Raindrops. A lot of other singers have covered the song but BJ had that wonderful warm luscious tone that gave the song a beautiful sense of sentimentality and reflection that no one else could duplicate. Even several decades later J was still able to sing it with aplomb. Thank you to Fil for his gracious appreciation of a classic performer.
B.J. Thomas may have died physically, but he is alive Spiritually for all eternity... long ago he decided to believe in Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah... he's in Glory and Heaven! John 3:16-17
I loved his Christian albums
@@philmoore71 A good man.
🙌
I can't wait to meet him, in Glory, in the Eternal state. He will always be my favorite singer. Our time spent here on earth is short,
Eternal life is forever, choose Life, except God's free gift of Salvation..
He wrote a great book about his experience.
Sorry to hear of his passing. He was a Texas treasure and his songs were the soundtrack of my teenage years.
A wonderful singer and writer.. A wonderful man.. He is truly missed.. Thank you..
Thank you for this. First time watching, great analysis! Loved BJ grew up listening to him.. Beautiful man.
Thank you Phil for acknowledging this great singer. He kept his voice until the end. I saw him in concert numerous times and met him twice. R&B singers like Little Richard and Bobby Bland were an early influence and he toured with James Brown. He said he was glad to be a part of the best time for American music, the 1960s and 1970s.
I love the fact that you’ve been doing such a wide range of music, you’re analysis brings a different perspective to what ordinarily gets taken for granted. BJ had a voice that brings immediate ease to the surroundings... like Lou Rawls or possibly Johnny Rivers to some some extent. {a lot of you will have to Google those names ha ha) Great stuff Fil.
Such a great career. Really enjoyed his music. I had been listening to his music alot just days before his death. Thanks for analysis Fil!!!
Great analysis as usual Fil! You are by far the very best analysis channel out there and your true appreciation and knowledge of ALL kinds of music really shows and melts my heart ❤️ keep it up Fil and please think about performing your own old country style song of your own all of us loyal subscribers will LOVE it:)
This is such a wonderful tribute to a beautiful performer. I have his autograph in a small address book that I had on me. Never thought I would ever see him in person. I love his "Rock and Roll Lullaby" Wings, you again fly us with you on a musical medley of deep appreciation for B J's musicality. Thank You so much!
“Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” was the very first #1 song of the 1970s :)
I grew up hearing him on the radio and was gratified to hear him do the theme song to "Growing Pains". Hubby and I both agreed that he was an exceptional singer. We were lucky enough to have seen him 3 times; and he interacted with us somewhat. I stood up and clapped as soon as he started singing "Momma". He looked at me- smiled and said "Thank You for that, I like this one too". He interacted with the audience every time we saw him. Instead of the stand-in-one-place-and-never-smiling that some singers/bands do. He will be greatly missed. And thank you Fil for this.
Thank you for honoring this great vocalist. Wow, I had kinda forgotten a little and really enjoyed remembering BJ Thomas, his work and wonderful voice. He had to have a gentle soul to sing like that, he was the total package!
Rest In Peace BJ ❤🌹❤
I sang on stage with him in a group at a talent contest , I'll just say I was star struck.
love your analysis. you are the best!
Love BJ Thomas.. such smoothness in his voice. RIP. Raindrops make me smile! I see the scene in Butch Cassidy and Sundance kid in my mind! Thank you, Fil for this analysis.
I enjoyed this video about BJ Thomas! It was well analyzed loved it ! See you soon Christine 👏👏😊❤💞
Wonderful and spot-on analysis of B.J. Thomas's talent, Fil. Thank you so much! I knew B.J. was sick, yet when finding out he had passed on, I still became crushed, and cried a million-plus tears as a result.
The first time I saw B.J. Thomas in concert was in 1985, and at a place where my husband Michael and I now live right across the street from, so every time I look out of our home's front window, the view takes me back to that concert in '85, and I smile. Reason being, I met and talked with B.J. after the show. So special!
A day or so after B.J. passed away, I said to Michael, "I hope Fil does an analysis on B.J." Long story short, Michael found this analysis of yours and surprised me with it on Facebook; attached was a message from Michael, stating: "Fil must have heard you about BJ, Carm, look what he put out on CZcams." Michael then proceeded to share the link. Also, B.J. passed away on my cousin's birthday, and last year my sister passed away on Michael's birthday. Heartbreaking! It was a must to play B.J.'s version of "Amazing Grace" as the last song during my sister's service, for B.J.'s version of this glorious song is the best I've ever heard, not to mention extremely fitting for this kind of significant event.
Michael and I have attended 3 of B.J.'s concerts, and 2 out of those 3 shows, we also got to meet and talk with him; the last being at the Ulster County Fair on August 6, 2017, which was one day before B.J.'s 75th birthday. Michael always thought B.J. was kind and gracious, but Michael became stunned by B.J.'s graciousness that day, for B.J. allowed us to visit with him in his trailer after the show. However, I wasn't surprised at all. B.J. Thomas was the real deal in every way: a great man who dearly loved and cherished his wife and family; plus, in spite of possessing extraordinary talent, he was humble.
God bless the Thomas Family. Michael and I extend our deepest condolences to all, and may B.J. Thomas rest in eternal peace.
God bless you, too, Fil. Like B.J., you're truly wonderful! Michael and I see how much you care with every analysis given, which makes you the best at your craft.
Lastly, this message is to B.J. up above: "Thank you for the tremendous music all these years, B.J. I have loved and adored you and your amazing talent since hearing "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" in 1966, as have millions around the world. Godspeed."
As always, a great analysis, Fil. Thanks so much. "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" is one of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio when I was a tiny kid. I've always loved BJ Thomas. He was such a great singer and performer. He will be much missed. Thanks again.
Your commentary was BRILLIANT. I learned so much.
I had heard his songs but when I was watching Burch Cassidy it's like his voice with the bicycle ride just etched itself into my forever memory. What a great singer and a nice tribute.
Merci.
He turned 60 that year. He didn't lose much as he aged.
i was wondering his age - tks
Your loving admiration and appreciation for the singers and musicians is inspiring, and a pleasure to hear !
Thanks!
This was so nice. Thank you for mentioning his addiction ass well as his musicianship. I love your videos and how you explain things in a way that not only a professional musician such as yourself can appreciate but also in a way that a layman such as myself can follow. I especially love how when you discuss singers you document in great detail shifts from chest voice to head voice and so on. Some vocal coaches will say that if you're singing strictly from your head [ i.e.: Mick Jagger or Billy Corgan to name two ] then you're doing it wrong but I love you explain how the different techniques used by themselves and or together create great vocalizing.
