You nailed it, 36 in mowers and 50 dollars yards, are the sweet spot for 1 man Army mow operations.
I have the 36" Grandstand as well. My first and only mower so far. You are 100% correct. This is the perfect first commercial mower.

Great advice! I started my business with a 48" Exmark Radius and quickly learned the limitations in a subdivision setting. Lots of guys starting out will go out and get the biggest mower they can find, never taking into consideration the gate aspect. I also quickly learned how inefficient push mowing truly is. Currently looking to get myself a second mower.. either a SCAG Vride II 36, or a Toro Grandstand. Love the content man, keep crushing it! Have a great 2024 season.
I love my 36" Scag V-Ride II. That was my first commercial mower and it made all the difference for me. Even now with a 52" mower I still prefer the 36" on the majority of my properties.
I have a 52 inch scag v ride 2 and I’m debating between a 32 or 36? Does the 36 fit it most backyards?
I only have 3 properties that I have to use my push mower, and boy do I HATE it lol! Any advice is surely appreciated
@mannyluis7961 Yes sir, my 36 fits into the backyard all my gated properties, except for 1. Maybe take some measurements before you purchase because if they have very narrow gates and you have to pushmow anyway, that'll feel like a wasted purchase.

Will be getting a 32" Greenworks Commercial Stand-On for next season. 36" would be ideal, but a lot of homes in Minneapolis seem to have 30-34" gates.
Let me give you one piece of advice, find out how much that greenworks weights before you buy it because the 32”s have skinny tires and if that mower is heavier than the gas 32”s it’s going to be a rut creating machine. If the weight is similar then it will be fine but my greenworks 52” was to heavy even with the wide tire imo, otherwise I loved it.
@@kelkev85 Great point! I follow Michael Reed over at Quiet Lawn and he made note of how heavy the Greenworks Commercial mowers were in one of his videos. Said that was one of their downsides, even though they look like nice machines.
I plan to take the unit out for a demo run for a week and really see how it fares before committing (even though I'm emotionally there).
Greenworks has the only affordable option on the market right now for electric mowers in that deck size. Mean Green hasn't met the mark yet. Hopefully prices will drop as more competitors get into the space (e.g. Toro, ExMark, etc).
@@groundedearthservices yes I agree mean greens prices are a deal breaker, I can’t make those prices work for my business my customers will not pay significantly more because I’m using electric equipment and therefor I will 100% be loosing money if I use mean green. The greenworks 32 and 36 are very interesting because they are priced similar to their gas counterpart and with the smaller battery they may not be so heavy. Good idea demoing it that is for sure the way to go, don’t mentally commit make sure it’s going to work for you.

I just bought the 32 advantage from Scagg and let me tell you something that thing is the game changer not all gates fit into the yards like he’s saying because a lot of the gates are 36 inch but most mowers are actually 36 1/half if you measure it correctly so some gates it won’t make it in this 32 makes it everywhere
Thanks for the video. Although I don't plan on starting a lawn business, I want to buy a stand-on...and it's possible that I might parlay it into a side hustle. Nevertheless, you mowed that yard in a little under 3 minutes. My back yard is probably the same size, if not slightly bigger but I spend over 30 minutes on a non-propelled walk behind. My body is so taxed that I have to push myself to do additional yard work or let it wait for another day.

Can’t wait to get a 36” stander. I took over a friend side hustle so only have a 50 inch zero turn and a 22 inch push mower. A 36 would be so clutch on these cookie cutters. 36 & 52 would be ideal for me.
36 and 52 are definitely the sweet spot! I have a 48 currently and sort of wish i would have gone with the 52.
I wish I would’ve known a lot more about the business with tips like this. I just started with a push mower and got a bigger mower later. I still want a smaller stand alone mower.
Have you considered petitioning your clients to enlarge the gates or make an entry access panel for you t get inside? I have done that this season and every single client except one said I could and it has really helped me out!
No because I have the equipment necessary to do the job but that's a great idea for those that do not
@@Bladesofgrasslawncare for sure, I had an old 32” toro walk behind and a 34” gravely compact pro that was able to get into almost any gate with. But I found the time savings of a 48” being able to do entire property is too much to ignore.
Grabbing up a new BB Revolt 42" for 5k. 5.7 hours on it, all demo hours. 0% at 48 months. All my gates are 48"+, and i already have a 30" walk behind that I've been using... if needed.
Just purchased a 48'' Pro-Line ENCORE used with a brand new Honda GX390 Engine in mint condition with two extra set of blades one pull start for $500.00. Mower was used to cut their residential home lawn and garaged kept the woman's husband passed away around 8 months ago "she cried when I got it running another part of her husband gone she indicated" . Looked for a 36" but most used ones looked like hell, just looking for some weekend work and I have a big lawn myself, couldn't pass on this deal.
We have a 42 inch walker&42 inch standard I wright mower and a scag 36 inch walk behind and a Honda push mower. Wednesdays and Thursdays we take stand on &walker the other 3 days we take scag and wright. Usually can hit every property front and back with the standon but one property doesn’t allow us to use stand on and another one we can’t because it has rocks goons to the back and don’t wanna maybe get stuck in the back lol

36 is perfect size. i have a scag swzt 36. The larger decks like 52 i dont care for them, the issue is if the yard isnt level it leaves a terrible cut, the wider mowers need large flat lawns.
How about 48” stand on mowers does it have the same problems ?
Depends on the lawn. It has to be some what flat. if its lump or dips in the lawn it will scalp it or leave uneven cut.
I wish I would have heard that a little sooner I had all crappy yards and spent a ton of time on them for roots to holes all overthe yards I just gave up I really love cutting grass
I am lucky in that all my properties have a gate wider than 48 inches
I have a 36 inch mower as a spare and the truth is
A 36 inch mower is not much slower than a 48
I have no use in this world for anything larger than a 48 inch
Those 60 inch mowers are for big properties
I do not find mowing acreage pays so well
There really is a sort of peak property that pays best
and for that matter a postage stamp yards do really pay well

I have a 52 inch deck and I honestly prefer this one over the 36. I do plan on getting a 36 but where I am at a lot of my houses have gates big enough where my 52 inch stand on can squeeze through

Bought a scag v ride 2 52 inch deck this year. Trying to pay off that puppy before the next season to purchase the 36 inch scag stand on 😅.
Contractors have always built homes and gates for homeowners and initially had 36" gates for reel mowers and then later for gas powered push mower. They provided what the homeowner needed which was 32-36" gates which was provided by the fence contractors and the minimum that general contractor was willing to pay for. Then homeowners started contracting the lawn care work out or using riding mowers so the gates went to 48" to accommodate 36" mowers. The size of a gate is never the size of the opening, just like doors. The size of a mower (push mower excepted) is never the size of the opening required to get through the gate. Contractors generally provide the minimum required and not what landscapers need/want. If homeowners want bigger gates they expect to be paid more for it. If you don't want a 30" sidewalk and want a 32,40, 48 or more, you will pay more just like the LCO want more beyond the basics.
In the 1960's the Building Code for residential construction required as a minimum a front entry door of no less than 36" and rear or side door no less than 32" and this became the standard installation for years and may be today and only a couple of dollars difference in cost. This never made since because if a homeowner ever had to replace a refrigerator it had to be taken through the front door, through the house to reach the kitchen which in most cases was near the rear door.
But back to gates, the initial cost of installing bigger gates financed in a 30 years mortgage vs up charges added for mowing with small gates is the question.
A hilarious event is when I was making a addition on my rental property and rough framed a rear door for a 36" door and had a friend contractor to install the siding and door, he closed the opening down to accept and installed a 32" door. When asked why he didn't follow the plans he responded with "cause that's what everybody else does".

Just purchased a 36 grand stand.
Cut quality and ride so far is great.
My only concern is that it is slow and stiff. Could that be do to needing time to build up full speed?
Had a 2018- 36 Bobcat Quickcat that was fast as heck.
Any ideas or tips?

Its much faster currently. Not sure if it needed a bit of time to build up power or I needed a bit of time to stop babying it.
Will take it to dealer though as the left handle has more speed input than the right handle.

Hey Mr. Johnny, I’m in Atlanta metro area and looking to get a Exmark Merto 36 inch deck but it is not a hydro. It’s less than $1300 and Everyone keeps saying spend extra to get a hydro model. I really can’t afford it but I’m told that it will slow me down and I won’t be able to reverse it and stripe and all the negatives. I’m confused and at this point don’t know the best direction to go in. I already have a Honda push mower and want to upgrade but am I making a bad decision with going with a non hydro model? What are your thoughts? If possible, please advise. Thank you sir. 👍🏾

I agree 36in are the best for subdivision with small back yard gate but dang come to Chicago you’ll hate it here we have 21in chain link fences that has huge back yards and potential customers wants me to give them ball park price on how much it’ll cost them for me to cut bag and haul away their yard. Mind you I don’t have no equipment that size but sometimes I give them a ballpark price with their push mower and tell them in average this house would take me 15-25 debends on so many scenarios with my equipment 45 to 60 dollars but with theirs 100+ first hour then I can drop in price. In my head I’m laughing but there are tons of customers would do it no one wants to cut their long grass big yards You got it good brother.
I'd suggest taking a piece of their chain link fence and modifying it so it rolls out of the way easy enough. Then when you're done, roll it back and clamp it shut with the same clamps. Their only a few bucks at walmart. You can also replace the nuts securing it with wing nuts for tool less access in the future.
