I remember as a kid my neighbors would give me all their pop bottles to mow their lawn. Boy was I a sucker lol😂

I learned the hard way that just because I'm super busy doesn't mean I'm making money. Your work has much more value than your pricing indicates. I always feel a little bad if someone rejects my price, but it leaves me open for those who value and can afford my service. Don't shortchange yourself just to stay busy.
Good work is not cheap Cheap work is not good that is what I tell people
That is why I bought a $5k mower to cut my 3 plus acres. I figured it would cost me $300 a cut. Which is at least $600 a month. Cutting season here is from around May to Nov. In one year I have almost paid the mower off by not having to pay a lawn guy.
im sure most people haggle price with such a big cut and want it for cheap. If you want it cheap, you gotta do it ur self
I agree 😊

Been in business over 20 years and happy with the money and customers I have for sure. I get a lot of business cause of people who are weak and not reliable
I wont take overgrown jobs any more unless they want to pay a lot. Its not worth the wear and tear on my equipment.
The guy with the mower was lucky there were any tree stumps, concrete blocks, rocks, etc. or random other debris under the weeds.
If they want cheap do it themselves.
I pay a guy $75 a week to do my lawn. 3/4 acre. Completely flat, sodded and landscaped. He has a crew of 5 and it takes them about 20 minutes to complete it . One of his crew members was talking to me one day and was kind of apologizing for how fast they are getting done. I told him… “ I don’t pay you for your time, I pay you for your service… don’t ever apologize for your price. “ I have ALS, he might be cutting me a break, who knows. However. He actually shows up every time, on time with duplicated excellent results. I went through 3 others before I found this guy and the reason I fired all of them was for not showing up and not communicating with me. Communication with your customers will go a LONG LONG way.
🤜❤️🤛
That's great but I don't see how he is making any money with a crew of 5. Yes, they spend only 20 min on your yard, but he is also paying for windshield time to get to the job site.
Where do you live? Because that’s a major steal for you if you live in California
@@Lazarob12 Alabama. I know it’s extremely low. I was expecting $100 a week, minimum. It has branched into other services such as shrub trimming and possibly taking down a dead dogwood tree in the fall. Also, I brag about Vic. I’m one of his best sources of advertising and I found him by word of mouth from an elderly lady. I knew he was a solid guy before I ever met him. My wife is a NP at our local hospital and we can give Vic more yards than he can handle , if he wants them. My yard is extremely easy to mow and edge because I maintained it well before I got sick .. Exmark Quest with a Kawasaki FR651. Shindaiwa trimmer, Lesco spreader. . I took a lot pride in my yard. . Vic and his entire crew wave, say hi when they see me outside. We don’t stop and chat, it’s a simple wave but I’m telling you guys that small gestures go a long way. He has never said it out loud but Vic understands that turning my yard over to a crew is one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It’s an admission that my disease has progressed because I admit I can’t do it anymore and that’s a tough thing to do. My advice to anyone dealing with a bad client is to give them about 1 chance then fire them . They might be having a bad day, got a bad medical diagnosis so give them about 1 chance. Anymore than 1 chance and you have let the customer have too much power and they will screw you until it hurts. Most of the people that bitch and complain haven’t spent a summer in their yard. It’s hot, miserable, and that’s why we pay you to do it. Trust me… nobody wants to lose their yard guy in July 🤣 You have the advantage because it’s hard as hell to find another guy in July . You guys have enough shit to deal with. Having said all of this, there is such thing as BAD MONEY, meaning the client isn’t worth the hassle. @@slatsgrobneck7515 he does 20 - 30 yards a day
I’ve paid people to cut my grass and the weeks go by and they don’t show up and then when they come to cut it, they want more because it grow really high. I just cut my own grass.
Your start up costs with all new equipment can be in the thousands of dollars!! New or fairly new truck. Can easily be 60 to 70 grand alone ! Then you have thailer, trimmers, lawn tractors and hired help! People dont see that when they want their lawn done for 25, 50 bucks!! And then you have the maintenance of the equipment!! Gas prices!!
Don't forget about Unemployment, Workman's Compensation Insurance and Property Damage Liability Insurance plus insurance on the equipment. And we haven't even thought about taxes yet.
I've been an apartment dweller for most of my life, and I have no desire to ever purchase property, so I haven't mowed a lawn probably since I was one of those preteen kids walking door to door on my street with Dad's lawn mower and a can of gas, mowing lawns for like $8!!! Accounting for inflation, I'd guess that $25-$50 that you mentioned probably wouldn't be too far off the mark from what I was doing in the late 70s. No way anyone will get a landscaping company to mow their lawn for anything even close to that mark again. I'd say if so done wants to pay $50, try calling on one of the neighborhood kids to do it. If you can get them to put down their phone for an hour or so. I'd guess it's probably way past that time when a couple of neighborhood kids would grab their shovels and clear the driveways and walkways for the elderlies in the neighborhood after a snowstorm, and not ask them beforehand because we didn't want to charge them for it. I didn't get it before, but Dad explained about old fogies and not usually having much money and not being able to do it themselves. I got the idea to not charge them on my own, but based on what he told me. Obviously, it wasn't the greatest work, but wielding a shovel at eight to ten years old doesn't exactly yield the best results, but they were mostly cleared and walkable. We lived not too far from an old abandoned mine, so getting salt was never a problem. We'd hammer out a block, take it home, hammer it into smaller pieces, then hammer those into smaller pieces, then those as well, until we had a bunch of smaller than pea sized chunks of salt crystals, and we'd throw those down on their walkways. It was a lot of work, but we didn't care. We were getting to break shit with hammers without getting in trouble for it.
I get $50 for small yards, cut, trim, blow off driveway sidewalk and porches. $50 is the least I will go for anything, I work alone and can do 12 of the small yards a day with travel time rolled in there.
$50 is bare minimum per hour, I normally shoot for$60-80/hr but I quote fixed rate
People tend to forget that lawn care & landscape is a luxury service. Not everyone can afford it and that is reality. If you cant afford hiring a professional feel free to do it your self. I appreciate your videos keep them coming.
That depends upon the size of your lot. If a homeowner bit off more than they could chew your luxury becomes a necessity.
Good grief where does it stop as a luxury the pool man the person that cleans gutters the person trimming fruit trees the luxury is the people that provide the service not the customer dummy
It stops being a luxury when it is required by the HOA, the neighborhood covenants, the county/city ordinances, or when safety becomes a priority. Lots of locations where neglecting those "luxuries" end up with fines. It is not uncommon to receive a call to cut an overgrown lawn so the homeowner can avoid a fine.
@@Scott-cu8nfI live in the woods far from any HOA. And am grateful for that blessing. To each his own. 👍
@SniperLogic 🤜❤️🤛
Used to run a Lawn care service about fifteen years ago...... Everybody Wants to work done for nothing And at the end of the day you can barely afford to make it worth your time. Can imagine how rough it is now given how tight the money situation is with everyone.
It's the same way now. I quit this year and sold the equipment.
Money is only tight for the poor and most of the middle class the rest are getting richer right now.
People hate mowing, not me, it’s a zen thing an hour of solitude and walking exercise. After I sit on my deck and have a beer.
Charged a guy $400 to re level, and shape his evergreen bushes that he paid a couple of homeless guys to hack it up for about $20 bucks the year prior. He threw an absolute fit, and didn't grasp the concept of annual maintenance which I would have done for another $60.00 to maintain the shape. That's over ten years ago, so the price would be close to double that now. He didn't want to pay for his neighbor's side of the bushes, and his neigbors told him that they were his bushes and his responsibility (in front of me). His backyard shrubs also overlooked a golf course, and he didn't want me to make the shrubs side that faces the golf course look nice either. I should have walked away from the job, but I muscled it out by myself. I ended up planting some shrubs for his daughter, and taking care of his sisters yard. However, they were kind of low-ballers and this sort of cost me money by burning time in their yards. I did professional gardening, and landscaping, and avoided the mowing side. Mowing is about speed, consistency, reliability, gardening and landscaping is about sexing everything up.
From 1967 when I was 12, thru 1971 I cut grass in my neighborhood. I had 3 yards that were usually weekly and 4 others when the owners where busy. Most of the yards took about 30-40 minutes with a 21" walk behind. I only charged $3.
I should have kept at it, when I turned 16 I got an actual job detailing cars, part time, $2 per hour. I should have just gotten more yards.
Wow only $800, I was thinking more like $1500
Great job🎉
Agreed on first cut there's gonna be a big difference in price between the first and second cut. Keep them prices high, brother man. There's others of us out here not trying to low ball the industry
Pressure washing/ soft washing is worth a look. Great comment.
Prices sound pretty reasonable to me, I am not in that business but I have owned some rural property for the last 15 years and in the past I tried hiring people to mow/brush hog it so I know what I was quoted. Also did a lot of clearing of land about in that condition, using a couple of chain saws, a walk-behind brush mower, and a 1978 Sears 11 hp Surburban garden tractor with a 42" deck that I modified to be more of a brush mower than a finish mower. If I were the customer here I would pay for the initial cut/clearing, then buy a lawn tractor and maintain the ground myself. Even a cheap MTD machine will keep it mowed if you don't abuse the machine. For over 10 years I have mowed a bit over an acre of ground for a non-profit (for free) and have used a couple of belt-drive MTD's to do it- one was an old one my former boss gave me. Good video.
It takes me 3 hours to mow my yard with a riding mower, then it about 6 hours to weed eat and trim, it cost me about 4 gallons of gas, = about 14 dollars, my labor is free because I don't charge myself ( : I mow about 3 acres, seems I get a really good deal from me (:
Good job sir. Man I wish I could get my 19 yr old son to help me.

Before I started cutting my own yard, which is an arpent (just under an acre) the average quote was $150 per cut, done twice monthly. That's when I decided to do it myself. So, a new Scag Liberty Z 48", TroyBilt push mower w/Honda engine and four years later, I smile knowing how much $$ I've saved. Yard work is not something I look forward to, but I do have some fun on the ZTR.
600 per month saveing plus 4.00 $ gallon gas, what did the machine cost you?
@@peterwill3699 Because the lawn is cut bi-weekly, the monthly cost was $300 X 7-8 months of cutting per season for an average yearly cost of $2250. I bought the Scag (w/Kawasaki FR651V) in 8/19 for $4399. With taxes, a spare set of blades, two oil filters and "dealer prep," drive-out price was $5131. I don't recall the price of gas back in '19, but now in 6/24 non-ethanol fuel is $3.79. With a 5.5/gal tank, I get 4 cuts. Other than greasing zerks, yearly oil, air and fuel filter changes, this machine has been trouble free.
If that were mine, I would clear it during the winter. Once managed and laid out, develop your regular plan.

My Harley mechanic charges 150 per hr......but his work doesn't suck!
First, the equipment is so expensive, insurance, then wages, then profit, all need to go into the equation. Owning a business now has never been so hard. Everyone has their hands in your pockets. If you don’t like the price, do it yourself. Then don’t bitch at the price.
Just remember they all have a retirement plan and they don’t want you to have any thing period 😢😢😢

I’m my are we get $100~$125 an acre plus trimming for a recurring cut.
I got out of it last year #1 due to no one will work any more and #2 it was my least profitable business. So I put more effort into tree service and grading .
Right. Mowing has a price cap. Steady income, but other landscaping work can pay a lot more for your time if you have the skill/equipment.
I’m surprised you were able to say your hourly rate. I tried that once and the guy made a counter that was like in this other town (he claimed) you can get half what I said so he wanted half and he also dropped the frequency of cut. I decided to let the guy go.
Biweekly is scary during summer rain season. It's asking a lot of your equipment. For me, bidding jobs was easier using existing accounts as a comparison. But that may not work for the next person.
RELIABILITY - You said it!! Most customers fire their lawn guy because he's unreliable. Most unreliable lawn guys have under priced properties and they hate cutting those properties. But hey, they could also just be lazy!
That is a jungle....
Thats not mowing
Thats called a clean up job an cost 2x as much

Fair price first cutting
why would anyone want to mow all of that when they cant even mow around the house.
That’s how much a lot of people charge around here in Ohio . $200 / hr for 3 dudes and equipment . Some of the Mexicanos charge $600/day for 3 dudes landscaping , not bad . They usually go for 6 hrs . Work is kinda not prime though imho . I do everythjng and need to up my prices . I just like dropping a number anymore . Everyone is cheap
You needed a bush hog on some of that yard. Some serious vegetation control is needed. Prune the lower limbs of the trees so they not hitting you in the head. Great job, a lot of work involved and worth every penny you charged
Modern commercial mowers practically are Bush hogs. Definitely not like the old Snappers.
You need a compatible hustle for the rest of the year as well.
Dude, you're watching it. In fact you even commented on it which boosts his CPM.
Your cheap my 1.1 acre easy to mow is 110 everytime it’s mowed. It was 85 he tried to raise me to 140 because of inflation we settled on 110
This looks like a job for a flail mower, otherwise I would not touch it. You don't know what is buried out there.
We charge minimun $125 for men hour
Up north in summer i need to mow every 5 or 6 days as weather allows to keep the lawns looking neat and orderly. I am surprised 2x month works in what looks like a much warmer climate does the grass grow slower inthe heat in the south? Honest question not trolling. Also does your bid include fertilizer or any chemicals? Thank you and god bless Jared from Wisconsin
That's what I was thinking, no way would I cut every two weeks. A lot of times I have to cut my own place twice a week or clippings are piled up everywhere unless you bag on every cut.
$400 per month for just 2 cuttings per month just ridiculous I owned a landscaping company in the early ninetys and if I tried to charge that I would have been laughed out of town
I got 20 bucks per acer for 2 man crew
Early 90s would be about 30 years ago. Hell, back then, it would only cost me the price of a movie ticket and a hotdog to get laid. Now, it would cost 18 years of child support payments. Sheeeeeyit.
Ok, whatever.....early 90s vs 2024. I'm pretty sure a lot has changed since then. There is no way you're cutting 3 acres for 60 dollars and making it worth your time and expense, get real.
The Gas costs that much you a-hole
$25 per mow around here for an average size lawn of about 1/2 acre or so. $40 for an acre usually depending on the type of yard.
That’s what I used to charge back in 2004. If 2 or more yards were touching each other, I would remove $5 from each of their prices. I have never hired someone to cut my grass so I do not know what prices are today. I feel like my neighbor is paying around $80 for their 1.5 acres.
I pay 38 in ark but give a good tip
Around here at $25 per normal yard you'd lose money. The yards may be small but drive time, equipment cost, raising labor rates would put you under. Small yards start at $65 and go from there. Land like this would be $1,000 easy. I'm in southeast MO.
1980 prices
@@dorianharmon47Exactly, that is what I charged for 1/2 acre in 1980 and I was just a kid with a lawn mower.
Great video, you guys do nice work. How do you protect yourselves from ticks?
After removing a couple ticks in the last couple weeks and owning a similar property, I was thinking exactly the same thing. Properties like that are the worst. I have a large grass area which I'm considering letting turn back into woods. I don't know why people have huge lawns like that. What do you use it for? It is nothing but a maintenance headache. On top of what you see in this video, mix in invasive trees like Tree of Heaven, White Mulberry, and Siberian Elm and you will know what I've been dealing with. The guy in the video is nuts not wearing long clothing, with regard to ticks.
And in area copperheads would also be a problem
Wear long sleeves, long pants, a hat and work boots and you will be resistant to most pests. It has worked for me for years and the worst thing that has happened is an occasional scratch from a brier or an ant gets in my clothes and starts biting. I even wear bungee cords on the bottom of my pants and that keeps most ants out.
Spray bug spray on your shoes and socks as well as on your pants up to the knee (or higher if going into taller grass).
I would do that for $250.00 a cut
How do you deal with customers who claim that your mower broke their window, threw a rock and chipped paint on their car, and just things like that? This "land clearing" type work is what I'd like to get into, but I am terrified of people making false claims just to get some $$$ out of me under the guise of "he's a new guy, he doesn't know anything". Just get insured and let them sort it out?
On a somewhat related note, how do you deal with "you didn't mow it right so I'm not paying!" type of people? Do you get them to sign a contract before you do anything?
Take video of everything before you start to work
Don’t give off new guy vibes. Get insurance, it’s cheap, I pay $61 a month for $1m liability coverage.
For payment, I get card on file. You can define how you charge. For instance, some folks charge before the cut, some after, some like me charge on Mondays and some charge once a month. If you get “I’m not gonna pay” vibes from someone don’t do the work or give an astronomical price.
@@dominickwynn2435 $61/month for liability? That's fantastic actually! I presume you don't have any claims so far, right?
Thanks for the info in general. I should really get into cards instead of cash.
Great info, always wondered
How often do you sharpen the blades on your machine? That thing is smooth. Thanks
I mow my fairly rough 5 acres 3-4 times then just replace the blades. Not much blade left to sharpen.
How long that yard take real time

Unfortunately this profession is going to be a thing of the past. As inflation increases ppl can’t afford to pay someone to do it so they are doing it themselves.
Purchasing, operating, maintaining and storing lawncare equipment all has a cost.
@@heystarfish100 yes it does. However it’s cheaper for homeowners to do it themselves. So what is your point?
@@wardraven8755 Have you done the math on the purchase of machines, oil, gas, filters, spark plugs, batteries, belts, grease, bearing replacement, blades, blade sharpening equipment, tire replacement, tools, storage shed, a string trimmer, it’s needs, a blower, the labor time, the storage demands and how it affects your other needs? I think you might be surprised of how quickly all of those add up over time and how much wear and tear these machines acquire and need service. Every season you mow your lot you are again faced with all of these expenses which have to be accounted for in cost of ownership. If you fae a loss on your equipment in value or theft that too should be in your math. It’s much more complicated than many would imagine.
@@heystarfish100 But a homeowner isn't going to run his equipment 10 hours a day.Your looking at a few hours a week and his mower and blower lasting many years. My little riding gravelys 8112s are 50 years old.And the truck and trailer is not needed, and filled with gas everyday also.
@@peterwill3699 All lawncare equipment requires frequent maintenance and replacement parts even for the homeowner. Think about the purchase price of new equipment today. I had owned a tractor and know about all the expenses as I did all of my own maintenance and repair work. It never ended.
A guy bided to brush hog a field down the road and I guess he thanks that the bucket on front of his tractor is made for detecting things so he puts it close to the ground about a foot. He has never mowed this lot before but he runs as fast as he can and k-boom he knocked the valve off of an old gas well that was about 2 feet high. Yes sir after it burns out his tractor was toast so he sues the land owner for not telling him about it. So now he was out more money for lawyer
I think your price is a bargain for all the work you have done. I would have thought at least 1500 or more for the initial clean up.
Nobody would touch that work around where I live even in south GA Heck, you have to pay the crew, plus equipment expenses. I don't know how u make a living at those prices. Then after a long 12-14 hour day you have to check the equipment to make sure its ready for the next day. And last but not least....25 -30 dollars for beer.
He should be able to do it by himself in three hours.
No need to have all that in grass/forbs unless you run livestock on it. Let the trees take it back, problem solved and a lot cheaper!
Looks like a cut back is needed on all the trees
Never understood the need to give Mother Nature a haircut on large property such as this. But I live in a small town and years back when water was rationed I tore out my grass and installed a desert landscape saying bye to my lawn man. Maintenance free. That has saved me thousands.
One day I will disappear from the society and my mountain land will have NO MOWING action at all 😂❤️😂 GOOD VIBES TO YOU ALWAYS!!
People in California who are losing their homes to fire had the same attitude toward mowing and brush removal.
@@MW-xm1rc Not the same thing. This property on this video isn’t burning. I’m guessing this is east coast, high humidity.
In dry areas is does make sense to cut back areas.
I was surprised by how low your prices are. In my area going rate is $75-$85 per guy, per hour.
With a mower and gas? That's a good deal
I'm new to running a yardcare business, but I'm really good with a weed-eater. Are there any sources you can recommend for how to properly bid an area, such as how to measure an area and how thick of weeds an area is?
Start low, go above and beyond, then as your business grows, you up your price and weed out that crap. First few years are rough, but if you make it past that youre good to go!

I was quoted 300 per cut for my almost 5 acre yard. I need it cut once a week and sometimes twice a week in the spring. Instead I bought a Kubota ZD1211 and used RM43 on everything that needed to be weed whacked except for around trees. Cutting takes 1.5 hours and weed whacking around the trees takes about 15 min. New mower reduced my almost all day cutting down to a couple hours. No way will I pay 300 per cut.
Lol 😂how much were you thinking he was gonna charge you? 5 acres for $300 is cheap 😂
@@25-8 I’m not expecting anyone to do it cheaper. I’m just saying it’s not cost effective for me to hire it done.
@@bobmedic3214 exactly man, no offense but you won't make it look as good as these guys out there. They are charging you their time. 5 acres would take about half a days work for a crew just to make $300 come on now. I make that just cruising around in a Saturday with 6-7 hours of work including drive time by myself and way smaller properties.. equipment has gone up the roof and again THE SHOP DOESN'T CARE for our sob stories, labor rate is $110+ the parts and that's almost half of what you paid for the equipment itself.. it's not easy and during this time of year when fuel goes up, it's almost always a no win situation for us.. how much of it is it worth your time? That's what people are paying for, this stuff takes time. You just said it yourself, a couple of hours..
@@25-8 Right but I don’t make 150 an hour so it doesn’t make sense for me to pay to have it done. And I can make it look just as good if not better than the people in my area. I’ve been doing it a long time and I also have way better equipment than they do.
5 acres, $300? Sounds like ol boy was giving you a discount. Just off the jump without seeing your property I'm at almost $550
What was the music you had playing.

@Arkansasfestus the same music he's been playing since the beginning of his channel newbs.
