    i went from a ferris z1 to a toro 36 back to a ferris z1. Ferris is faster, cuts better, and a bit more powerful. toro grandstand is more comfortable but the grandstand loves throwing clumps, its super slow in reverse, but it does stripe a tiny bit better. if anyone is looking at the Z1 id say opt for the 23hp vanguard its a night and day difference compared to the 19 hp kawi

    Cut a piece of puzzle matt for the z1. Platform. It helps with neuropathy in the feet. Love the speed selector and the response of the steering on the z1. The gas gauge is out of the sun, which means you will be able to read it for years to come. The way the safety switches work is more intuitive. The toro has difficulty keeping the front wheels on the ground. You are well behind the axel (old technology).

    Here's an efficiency tip you may want to consider. I have a 52" Ferris Z2 I bought new in 2018 and I am very pleased with it. I noticed in your video that you were experiencing a slight delay when pulling the pin to change the deck height on your Ferris. To eliminate this, I popped out the indent ball that keeps the pin in place so I could more easily lift out the pin and change deck height. I did this a couple of years ago and have had no regrets since doing so.

  • @Hillsidelanscapemanagement

    I own both machines and each has advantages. That said, I much prefer the Toro. The cut is better on the Toro and I found that it turns much better without tearing up the lawn, even on tight turns. The ferris, even with taller/wider tires, will slide even in dry grass. That's more of a result of the tread than the size of the tire. The ferris is definitely more compact and won't lift as high in the front as the Toro, however, it does lift more frequently due to the shorter wheel base.
    You touched on the huge filler neck of the Ferris and that's a huge advantage. I've never lost a drop of fuel filling the Ferris. The speed control on the Ferris is a nice touch for sure. It really helps new employees learn.
    I think the main advantage to either depends upon the dealer. The dealer truly makes any mower better or worst than it really is.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts on them

      I run Toro's because of the quality of cut, and that's it. Either you're going to bust your knees or your back, take your pick, but I'm not sacrificing the cut I get from Toro. Tearing turf is how you make your turns and if you do a zero turn, turn, then you're going to tear turf regardless. Only problem I have is transport, the Grand stand has to be bungeed or ratchet strapped down or it'll move all over the place.

    • @Hillsidelanscapemanagement
      @Hillsidelanscapemanagement Před rokem

      @@elitelawns9437 I agree to a point. The Ferris I have will slide no matter how you turn unless you really slow down before even beginning the y turn. The toros can do that turn at almost full speed of your careful.
      What years are your grandstands? I have a 16 and a 19 . The 16 will move on the trailer but the 19 is pretty good about staying. I secure them regardless these days as I'm now in the mountains but back in Florida they only got the strap on the way to the first properties she the way back to the shop

      @@Hillsidelanscapemanagement 2011. Only maybe 700 hours. I don't have a full week mow schedule, and I change the oil and put Lucas products in it. I only have 1 and run a 52" ...whatever the name of that Toro is... Groundmaster? It's a 2011, too.
      I don't know what the Japanese know about engines, but if I could put a Kawasaki in my truck... I had an old self propelled Honda that I let the oil almost run dry one time, and it still kept ticking.
      We just got Ferris around here and I heard about them back home, but I don't know that I trust a suspension system on a mower. How's that work out with the cut?

    • @Hillsidelanscapemanagement
      @Hillsidelanscapemanagement Před rokem +1

      @@elitelawns9437 I think Toro upgraded the parking brake on the grandstands since 2011 so that may be why I don't have much of a problem with them rolling on the trailer. I've never had anything with a Honda engine but I've heard nothing but good things about their small engines. The Ferris definitely doesn't cut as well as the Toros but I think that's more about deck design than the suspension system

    • @briansnead4787
      @briansnead4787 Před rokem

      @Lawn Thumbs 36" . I bought to get into back yards. And it's really handy on really small turf areas on islands and such at commercial properties. Looks like yours doesn't have it, but honestly, they probably made the hydros smoother and did away with it. It's just a stick that has a 1 to 8 rating. 8 is wide open. I rarely use the feature as I go in "haul balls" mode anyways lol. They aren't fast to begin with, and one thing I will say is that the tradeoff for reverse speed is not good. Either you speed up the forward and go turtle slow backward, or go kinda slow forward and decent reverse. I am mulch mowing everything and only mow properties that the customer wants me to treat and fertilize as well. I don't mow weeds. So even on thick Bermuda or Zoysia, those units can handle higher speeds of cut, even with mulching decks. My buddy got me into those curved blades and not the ninja ones like I assumed were the best. No lines left afterwards and easier to sharpen. Also mulching is basically no chance of throwing rocks. I've had one person in 10 years stop and say a rock flew out and hit their windshield. Even then they never followed up with me wanting to get an their info and proceed through. (Oddly was a really nice Escalade) 😆

I have a total of 40-41" of width available. Can you check your Z1 and confirm the overall width measurement for me please? I really think that z1 might be a great addition to my mower options.
