The tiny island of Saba is home to the world's shortest commercial runway. It is 400 meters long with jagged cliffs on all sides. So since we were only a 15 minute flight away in St. Martin, we HAD to see it for ourselves! I am terrified of small planes, but Nate convinced me it was an experience we wouldn't regret ;)

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this CZcams channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
I am so excited to see this video! I've been waiting so patiently since I received your email back! Yay!!
Thank you Kinda for recommending Saba to us! ❤️👏🏻✈️
As soon as I saw the title, I was thinking “Poor Kara, it’s like the airport in Nepal all over again”. Different reasons, just as scary.
Hahah yes major flashbacks were occurring!
I was thinking the same. :)
I was also thinking along that line. Esp when the plane is so small it reminded me of the Lukla flight that K & N traveled!
As a pilot that was a beautiful short field landing! Stall horn going off and then immediately into reverse, well done
Yup good flare as well
@@blewyd yup both of you are right well done twin otters
Often the stall horn already goes off on the final approach, just before touching down and they manage to need only 200 meters to land, saving them having to turn the plane around to taxi to the terminal. They just land and turn right to the terminal.
YES..... I love Saba. I'm been traveling to Saba every year for the last 6yrs..... Love Saba. SCUBA DIVING there is amazing.... Glad to see your note about your able to fly and scuba dive in the same day... However you can't dive and hike to the top of the mountain in the same day... It's too high. Fun fact... you can still hitchhike there. I was picked up by the school bus one time. Scouts place where you went is the place I stay at when I travel there. The owners Wolfgang and Barbara are two very sweet and welcoming people. And so are the Sabans.... GREAT VIDEO..
I really appreciate the viewer that suggested this visit and for you guys actually going! After watching the video I can't wait to take a trip there. 😊 Kara & Nate, you both are the most pleasant people, enjoyable content & helpful to watch on the internet 100%!!!
I know me too.. I live in a very large and very crowded city.. this place looks like a dream.. and it is so green too...
That's the Southern hospitality
Kara I think you got significantly better with those types of planes since Everest. 😁👍👏
That buzzing you heard just as the aircraft landed on Saba was the Stall Warner. Basically it sounds off to tell the pilots that the wings are about to lose lift due to a variety of reasons. In this case probably flying too slowly to shorten his landing roll on such a short runway. Such a great experience.
Great video and love your work.
As someone who just moved to a new, small town, just started learning Dutch, just started a degree in geology, and just started learning to dive; I think I've found my place. Thank you!!
Sounds like you were meant to go here!
I love that Kara shows the realistic side of travel, makes me feel better about wanting to travel yet hating flying
I think this vlog would be the absolute BEST u guys have made. Maybe it had something to do with the size of the island and the home vibe u have it. Ty. The best ever so far.
Why do I react to new Kara and Nate videos the same way Kara reacts to that first cup of coffee?
Right is like my breath of fresh air this two..
I have actually started to holding the cup the same way.
I know, it’s so fun!
Stellar! Totally Stellar! Loved how the pilot had to crab getting into Saba and then basically dove in and then pulled up until the stall horn sounded. Now THAT's flying!
I'm like you, Kara. I tolerate flying generally ok, but I definitely don't love landing. You handled it like a champ, girl!
I've heard about this place, and what an absolutely incredibly beautiful island. It made that scary plane ride worth it. I mean, it has churches, a post office, stunning views and goats roaming around freely. What more do you need? You made the right decision to allow Nate to talk you into going, Kara! I love so much that you guys went, and now we get to enjoy it too! 😊😊😊
My grandmother has a house on Saba and has always spoken about how the airport runway freaks her out every time she travels there, so it was really neat to actually see the landing! Thanks so much for sharing! ✈️
I was so emotionally connected with that landing I got nauseous lol
We have some great ones for you too!! My wife and I do things on 700 or 800 ft RWYs in Indonesia and throughout SE ASIA!!
“It’s not your time yet!” I love it!! Poor Kara!! But soo pretty!!!
Lol I’m from Saba and I actually went to school there both elementary and high school 😂 it’s fun!!
Do you have internet in saba
AgiL AidaN yes yes we do
Thanks Kara and Nate for enjoying and showcasing our Dutch Islands of Saba and Sint Maarten on your blog. I live here and forget sometimes how blessed we are as Dutch Citizens to live where many ppl vacation, these islands have so much more to offer 🇸🇽
Aww Kara is so cute! You and Nate have such a wonderful and contagious joy!
Wow, what a gem of a find! An island with no people, gorgeous, gossip about the new cement truck and can even study? *packs bags*
i am rewatchin some of kara and nates old videos and none of them have aged but they have become better people and I just find that amazing
Kara&Nate my new fave CZcamsrs😍
You should fly into Barra Airport. It's on a beach at low tide.
definitely 😱😱😱😱😱
That pilot must have some skills!
We learned (in the next vid) that the pilots are highly trained, and if they go on vacation for a month or so they have to re-train a little before flying again with passengers!
@@KaraandNate Just like me with the bus on short exit and ramps here in Sweden to the highway. Just came back from vacation. Really scary the first time. Hahaha.
"That pilot must have some skills!" No; he's a 12 year old skateboarder who doesnt have a pilot licence.
And he likely doesn’t get paid much
@@SKS8080 he probably has that job for a few years to get hours and then move to the airliners.
Never heard of this island. What a gem!
I am now all caught up from watching your videos from the beginning. Now I don’t know what to do everyday😂
It looks so peaceful and beautiful there! I can see why locals don’t want to leave the island. They have their own little paradise.
Guys, you brought a nice smile on my face. Very well shot and edited video with fantastic nature shots.
Just made up my mind, this place will be my retreat place for writing my book, thanks for discovering it for me.
Keep them videos coming in and never lose those great smiles guys, thanks for the time and effort.
You will love it there. There are some peaceful Airbnb's as well as a few hotels. I've been traveling to Saba every year for many years. You'll get to know the whole island within a day or two.
@@derekinhawaii Thanks for your recommendation, well appreciated.
Wow! Thank you viewer who recommended they go to Sabo! We all got to see it. I wish I could move there!!!
Damn , you guys are even happy when you are scared. :D
Great observation! So true!
I loved your footage of the landing..and your fellow passenger's comment. You guys, this island looks so cute! Thanks for putting this place on the map for me 😊
I Flew into Saba in the 80's several times for some of the best Scuba Diving in the world........Thank you for the memory of that runway...
Just breathe Kara... all will be fine! the Twin Otter Aircraft that you were on it uniquely suited for that mission! Winair has been flying the Caribbean for years! The Kara POV has been priceless!
The footage the of pilots' hands was so beautiful!
I’m with Kara, tiny planes freak me out! ✈️😳
I'm from Tenerife, Canary Islands. And this islands reminds me a lot of a little island from our archipielago, El Hierro and it's my favorite island of all!! Love your videos!! Xxx
I live my best traveling life through your guys video, they are amazing! Thanks for sharing everything you do! Safe travels 💕
Btw, the "beep beep" sound on landing is the stall warner, basically meaning that there's not enough airflow over the wings to sustain flight. Also because it is a commercial operation, the aircraft must legally be able to land and stop within 60% of the runway distance, just shows how amazing these little Twin Otter aircraft are 👌👌
I actually have a friend that goes to Saba Medical School!!! He loves it there! He goes on hikes almost every other day and he loves how there are no distractions lol
So cool! I can imagine it would be a perfect place to study!
Well thanks....another place I have to add to my list. Thanks a lot Kara & Nate!
Love how you captured the approach and landing and Kara’s reaction
Kara you're so brave! but please smother Nate with a pillow for making you do this!
And to think my friend did this multiple times while she went to medical school there! Never knew about the runway!
Total truth, this is a stellar island - it is perfect! Thank you for this vlog, it’s my new favourite.
thank you for showing me places that I wouldn't go or wouldn't have the chance like Saba, it's really cool and unique, I love it
We love hearing that! Thanks!
Enjoyed this one... I get what you are saying about such an isolated community being so happy by itself.
I was there in the late 80s . I got a t-shirt at the airport that said " I survived the Saba Airport ". Great scuba diving off the coast at Ladder Bay.
Hi Kara and Nate - wow that is an unusual island - and one we have never heard of - Love the shots out of the airplane windows - you always make these shots look so great - thanks for sharing.Chris & Marianne
I can't explain it, but in the list of places I want to visit from Kara & Nate videos, this has moved to near the top! I can't wait for part 2 of the video. :)
I've heard of Saba. I'm glad I've now been able to see it because of your superb video.
Agreed! So fun watching them travel together and love this video! What an amazing island - can't believe it's only 5 square miles!
Ive never been more excited for a video. Saba was like our second home! Brings back so many memories!! Ugh i want to go back now! I recognized so many people! Great vid again!! ❤️
Oh my god, I would never convince Matt to get on that plane. He is like Kara, well done. Crazy how it is possible to get a plane to stop with such a short runway.
SO COOL that you were able to see through the pilot's window as you were landing! Also, Saba kind of reminds me of the Caribbean version of Catalina, off the coast of Los Angeles.
I've been wanting to island hop through the Caribbean for a while, and you're just adding fuel to the flames :)
Spent two nights on Saba during our honeymoon. Flight was serious fun. Saba was great. Diving was the very best. Do the pinnacle dive. J

Wow.. What a landing.. Its Thrilling.. Absolutely love your stories..You guys are our inspiration to start our own CZcams channel and share our experiences.. Love from India 😊
That was great. Good on you both. And a beautiful island too. Glad it was actually good for you.
Fantastic video dear Friend love it. God bless you. Happy Day
That’s the face I made when I tried scuba diving for the first time. I freaked out and only went halfway down. 😅 What a beautiful island. Everyone must know everyone there. Lol
Saba looks amazing. I have a feeling y'all will go back for a much longer visit. I now must add this to my ever growing list of places to visit. Thank you both for such wonderful videos and fantastic information!
Kara’s faces while flying were PRICELESS! Such a beautiful little island...I’m better y’all make a trip back there at some point!
Hahaha glad you enjoyed them 😅🥴
Was so anxiously awaiting your next vlog! Just absolutely addicted to your vlogs!! They're the best!!!
Ba ha ha that pilot totally did that landing to freak out the crazy tourists!! That was funny...
what a beautiful little island though❤️
Such an interesting vlog! Glad you visited & showed us around Saba!
omg yes i've been waiting for a new vid all week. you're like the only channel i have notifications for!!! thanks for being the best channel guys
That means A LOT!!! Thank you :)
Kara and Nate thank you for replying!!! Love u guys!!
Whoa! That approach at Statia, you must have dropped like a ROCK. And the approach at Saba, just crabbing it in. (Aviationese: crabbing = flying kind of sideways, usually on approach in a crosswind.) Take some skill. The crosswind must be something right at the threshold of the runway, due to the mountains suddenly ending. What a great LADY driver. So glad you spent the night, the island needs visitors to spend money! I've watched lots of your videos and this is THE best.
Thank you Kara and Nate for being the best evening CZcams companions in the world! Please contact me if you're ever back in Singapore. We can go for a walk!
Hi both. I have just started to look to your videos and I must say they are very addictive. You guys look so good together and the way you explain about the places makes me feel like we are experiencing it with you guys. Keep it up. Waiting for more videos. Cheers
Safe travels to both of you! I hope you guys have lots of fun!
Clifhanger! Can’t wait to watch the next video about this beautiful town
nice that you guys are back! just caught up with your vlogs... now I'm up to date... God bless guys!
Beautiful island - like all of the winding roads and quaint feel
Nature's beauty. Beautiful quaint town. And those pilots are really skillful.
Beautiful island. Kara, you handled it well!
I’m sure someone stated this before, but those pilots are trained and certified to land there. ✈️🥰
Just now me and my brother were speaking about you that u haven't uploaded a video for more than 6 days and suddenly there came a notification about your video
That is Kara and Nate!!
We love you guys
Keep rocking.....Inspiration ❤❤❤
So sorry about that! Great timing though! :)
I live where you vacation😉 THE CARIBBEAN!!!!😍🏖🗻🏕
such an amazing experience
Wow love it!! That island is beautiful wow!
Yay, Kara! You did good girl! 🙌👏
Still beautiful journey. Good job Kara and Nate
I have fallen in love with you guys!! Now I want to travel the world with my husband. Thank you for bringing me so much joy
That island looks so peaceful, i want to go there and never left❤️😞
Sounds like a pretty fun little adventure! Glad you braved the flight, Kara!
still learning something new with every video! 🧡 thanks so much for updating!
I’m so glad to hear that 😁❤️
What a cool thing to see! That's what is so great about traveling, you arrive somewhere and find out about another place to check out that you wouldn't have previously known about!
WOW it is so beautiful..Priceless video Kara & Nate. The views are breathtaking!
My jaw dropped when I saw the landing strip, as I was like OMG..wow that pilot is so skilled!
Love the video.
I saw your upload and i clicked it so fast... Excited for watching the video
Love love love your channel!!! I’m always excited when a new video pops up! Where are you guys traveling to next?
You need to visit, Pitcarin Island, Saint Helena, Tristan Da Cuhna, or any other remote island. This is an exclusive look into this really small island!
Very scary but it looks awesome ! The views are spectacular.
Wow !!
You two are my favorite couple! Kara, I would react the same way! Kudos for trying new things!
You could have gone diving anyway, that 24 hrs is a guide line by the Air Force and it is on the far side of being safe, the Navy says just wait 2 hours before flying, but you were staying overnight on the Island anyway and since you were also flying below 18,000 feet and were not in a pressurized plane the chances of you getting the bends would have been very remote
I see new Kara & Nate, I excitedly click.
👏😁
I have never heard of Saba Island, but it's so beautiful! It's definitely going on my bucket list, shortest runway and all!
