Dear Arrekz, one thing that I think deserves mentioning is that with SnS mounting finisher, the triple strike, you don't actually have to do all three hits. You can actually loop the first two or just the first bash by just pausing a bit after pressing the triangle button. So press -> slight pause -> press and repeate and you can do like 9-10 shield bashes on the monster while mounted or until they flinch or are KO'd. You will easily outdamage the triple strike finisher by doing it this way.
Aregulargameplayer Underrated comment, get this up top quick
This is news to me! Have my like.
Aregulargameplayer you're absolutely right. However, the timing is as soon as your shield makes contact, press the strike button. Time it correctly and you'll be able to strike very quickly and maintain the loop.
And for all mounts if you have a slinger equipped that can flinch a monster, use them during mounts to shorten the time to get to your finisher combo. It usually takes about 2-3 pods to do it. And leave some time for the monster to recover from the flinch so you don’t waste any slinger ammo
And I continue to learn new things 500+ hours later. Thank you for this.
Damn look at all those combos that I'm never gonna remember
Felt that
write them down dumdum
@@graham9045 wtf gonna do that we there is a in game list
Try using combos of your own I did that with an Anjanath
@@giovanni545 Please know that the comment you replied to is 4 years old.
5 years later and your guide continues to educate new players. Thanks a ton!
Guilty as charged
For every video that isn't april fools is a gift upon the world we live in
in the past games wasn't sword and shield able to use coatings?
Only one and that was Generations/X plus they were called oils
back here again after so many years. MH:W is still a great fun game and this is still a great guide that's well made.
I just picked up the game like 3 weeks ago. Been loving it. Switch axe main, want to pick up other weapons.
I played at release and used the glaive and charge blade but stopped playing because I just couldn’t grasp the game and combat
Picked it up on sale to play with friends, instantly tried out dual blades since it’s what I used in 4U. Then stayed with SnS for the fact I can tank pretty much anything
@@MrDrManPerson Glaive is life bro
Its better than Rise
yup its a super good guide however since it was released before iceborne it didnt have the new moves that the weapons got after iceborne
for example perfect rush isnt here (which is the biggest and strongest SnS move) so if you can add that into the mix you will be a LOT better
i know im late but just incase you dont know it when you back hop you can press triangle so you go into perfect rush
you have to wait a little until your weapon glows, you get a sound effect and controller vibrates then press triangle again its a 3 hit combo if you miss the timing up you deal 50% less damage
they say fun isn't put into consideration when choosing a weapon to hunt monsters.
but this....
does put a smile on my face.
i was a former hammer main and lord hijek converted me and i started believing.
Fun certainly doesn't come in consideration when you could have picked a sword that is as big as you or a freaking machine gun, but you picked Sword and Shield.
QUELLE CONNASSE
KING OF THE HUNTING WEAPONS
crap guide to monster hunter quote?
When you play SnS so much you're more comfortable backhop dodging rather than roll dodging
MaestroNox Teach me the ways of SnS
Saved me often when I get greedy or when there's more than one monster fighting.
This plus evasion mantle make the aerial attack so versatile!
MaestroNox you would probably be really good at long sword as well then
SnS is honestly the best weapon there is for my play style. It's so fast, convenient and versatile.
That helmsplitter against Legiana at 13:26 was so satisfying
what a lot of people seemingly dont know is, that while you are holding R2 to guard (with any weapon really), you can also hold L2 to center your camera behind your character. This basically allows you to have your character always face the direction of your camera /strafe in all directions and makes it a lot easier to pull of things like the backstep while guarding (as your character will not turn around, but instead walk backwards while facing forward)
holy shit, thank you.
You always make the intros so satisfying.
Woah :o I
Nice profile pic.
Nicholas Craig-Porth Thanks dad.
Poor third Triangle attack, always ommited for years now
Bryanneo1 "F"
so this weapon is good for beginners
*13 minutes later*
Ok that's all the weapons moves
SnS is great, my favorite style is using a paralysis weapon and couple it with mounting skills. If you can mount and paralyze a couple times each, plus toss in a cheeky shock trap or two, it goes a long way. The Great Swords love me.
Damn right we gs players love people like you. Wish your type we're more common XD
Great tutorial as usual mate. You are by far top tier not only in content creation but as well as having mad skills that can match the best the game has to offer imo. You have vast knowledge and it shows that you genuinely want to share that with us. It’s a treat and and I for one am extremely grateful. When MHW was going to start their preorder, I went to your site to watch prior content and get your take on the up coming MHW. You sold me and I preordered the first day it was available and never looked back. Absolutely love the game and the community. Thx again for being you. 👍

After 650+ hours with switchaxe and light bowgun, I finally tried the sword and shield. And it is now my favorite weapon. Thanks for encouraging me to try it. They probably call it a beginner weapon because you can get away with button mashing. But, once I learned the timing of the combos, this is my favorite play style.
Incredibly detailed, comprehensive and a ton of slick transitions. Great video Arekks
3:17 My god that was a beautiful transition between clips. Excellent video!
I am the only one who watch these tutorials at least twice? I watch them first, then i try the first time the weapon just playing around to get a hang on it. Then i rewatch the video and start to make all moves he stated out. After i was able to do 10 times each move without failing once i am ready to try it on some simple monsters and go on from there.
The very same XD
Just finished my 2nd watch. Very likely to keep returning when I need a reminder.
Yea and now I just go right in to fight and figure out things as I go then come back to see what I didn't do.
Very comprehensive and complete video. Professionally done. This isn't just uploaded content, this is a finished product. Good job. Same goes for all the related videos.
Thanks for this! MHW is my first game in the series. I’ve tried nearly all the weapons, but I keep coming back to SnS. It just feels the most intuitive to me, and I love the versatility of being able to swap between blunt/slashing damage on the fly, using my slinger, and having all of my items at the ready.
My only caveat is I wish they had a set that looked like a spear and shield. I suppose I’ll have to try the Vaal lance at some point for that.
Sword and Shield for life!
1Way Road favourite weapon of mine. Can never go wrong with sword & Sheild
Feels a bit weak tho.
I prefer weapons with weight behind their swings.
its funny how capcom considers this weapon the newb friendly weapon, when its really more involved to get good use out of it. The dual blades are the most newb friendly melee weapon imo.
yeah but you can button mash sns and something good will happen :D you can do whatever you believe you can to cause you can chain everything to everything^^
Dualblades easy to learn hard to master. I dont play world but ive played every other monster hunter game under the sun and I can tell you there are so many newb dualblade users that dont know how to chain combos and dont know how to dodge but will over commit to every attack and cart. A good dualblade is a scary person to have on your team
Yes the DB is very easy to use
But newbs are wasting stamina left and right if they actually believed it
and dont forget a "bad" db is annoying as hell... a ls trips me and i roll out of his range but a db stunlocks me until the monster moves and he stops hitting......
I disagree majority of new DB player either fall into these two categories, they never tap into demon mode because they are too afraid of not having enough stamina or the one where they only do the blade dance locking them into position to get killed.
Thanks alot for the video man! I used a Sword and Shield setup for an arena challenge quest as I've never used the weapon before, I wasn't expecting much, as for some reason i never see people running them. I was thoroughly surprised how fast and versatile it was and I will most definitely be using this guide for my sword and shield hunts from now on.
Yes yes yes yes yes. Been waiting for this!
Your guides are so clean. Thank you, Arekkz.
Thanks to your video I have switched full time to SnS.
I absolutely fell in love with this weapon
That was a brilliant move to go from talking about being able to use the slinger to grab wedge beetles while sheathed, to going back to aerial moves. It's little details like that that makes me love your tutorial vids, and I became a charge blade main because of this. Keep up the fantastic work
Arekkz, it's like you're psychic. I just started picking up SnS yesterday and was bummed that you didn't have a Workshop video up for it yet. Much thanks!
finally the SnS tutorial. only took 40 years
We need a top 5 list for this weapon ASAP. Great content tho, the intros are always great to see!
I was FINALLY able to pick up the game, so now’s a perfect time to binge your current Weapon Workshop videos. I’ve been missing the hunting world!
4th weapon I've used in the game and it's the 4th time your tutorial comes out within 24 hours after I start using it. Your timing is impeccable sir! Thank you very much.
Hunters jumping onto the Witcher DLC like:
*how to main SnS*
Damn. I stopped playing and come back to find out I missed a Witcher 3 collab
This is me right now
You can backstep after a roll by simply pressing circle. It's easier to do than doing it while guarding. If you hold any direction while pressing circle you will do the shield bash combo instead. Additionally, you can use the rising slash after rolling, like how we always could, by pressing triangle.
This is so nostalgic after 5 years, and the fact that it still holds up too (-perfect rush)
Man this came the right moment I was trying to learn this weapon, thanks Arekkz great job!
I question the usefulness of item usage while unsheathed. Sheathing your weapon is almost instant with the Sword & Shield if you start sprinting. Why should I bother with it? Tried to use it but I don't find it effective.
I'd rather combo a bit, and reposition myself quickly if necessary with sprinting since I can put away my weapon immediately, heal/buff while running, dodge or block, also if needed and get back into hitting the monster's weak point, opening with the running slash that can even reach most of the taller monster's tail or head.
How subtly smart of you to use deviljho armor in this tutorial, to show off that it is post-rework information.
I was into the Greatsword but I had to put it down for this awesome weapon! Just trying to learn all I can about it! Appreciate the vid!
Just in time! I just picked up SNS yesterday and was disappointed there wasn't an Arekkz tutorial for it. Thanks man!
Who else is here to learn how to use this weapon as a result of the Witcher 3 collaboration?
Lmao me I love geralt witcher 3 was such I good game I re-downloaded the game because of this cross over
Yep
lmao yep
Yup here as well, i am having trouble with that pukei pukei save quest.
Hamza Hussain scavenge 10 Godbugs and 10 blue mushrooms. That gives you 10 life powders on top of the 3 ez ones they give and 3 regular.
SnS became one of my favorite weapons the moment I got a hold of it. It's what allowed me to beat Tempered Deviljho where all else failed. I love it.
Its so kind of you to take the time to make vidoes like this for us - Thank you so much!
Hey Arekkz, I like these tutorials because it helps if ive overlooked something but more interestingly to me, your enthusiasm and relevant information drives more interest in playing the game, at least for me it does. Ive tried several weapons after having watched one of your weapon workshops on that particular weapon. Might use my rathalos sword
You timed this perfectly as you know I've just started training with the SnS (using my Kirin SnS). I was curious about combos and how to do that helm breaker so thank you man. Great stuff as always 👍
Wow takin the plunge with the Kirin blade
That things expensive.
I’ve been maining SNS since freedom Unite back on PSP
And things have really changed over the years
And though I personally came from a time when status was the primary mentality when deciding what upgrade path to take nowadays it seams that people are really spreading out and trying more diverse SNS builds
And I’m digging it
Makes this old man proud. 💀👌
Ram I've dabbled a bit with SnS during the past MH games but World is where I'm starting to focus on mastering them so I can easily add more variety to my endgame hunting :). Yeah Kirin's cost me a fair bit, I mostly dig it's look and thunder is my fave element to often build for :D.
I'm a OG PS2 hunter but I've been using 1 weapon per game until endgame so whatever next MH will be, it's likely I'll golden line it with SnS 👍
Ram in previous games I didn't even care about status like in 3U I used rathalos because I loved the glowing sword
Omegamario17 wait what? I dont recall the kirin sns having any paralysis.
Oh yeah... whoops I meant thunder. My bad
Thanks for the SnS tutorial! I've been wanting to use this, but I didn't know how to do the good combos. Thanks!
Andrew Bjornas same here

I really appreciate this. I've been a greatsword main since Tri and haven't really touched SnS since. But this really helps me see the value in the weapon, thanks a lot!
Been SnS maining since the beginning...and I just found out about the helmbreaker from this video. Thank you Arekkz. You are doing the Lord's work.
Awesome tutorial
You can also enter the charged slash combo directly after roll dodging, which is also quite useful
I've been waiting for this!!! Thanks for another awesome tutorial :D
You've absolutely sold me on SnS. Thanks dude. I've been looking for something else to try and you've shown it.
Hijek told me this is the best weapon in the game

@@mrbarefootbogan6254 Greatsword takes sooo long to be able to attack again
Just wanted to bring attention to something small about SnS, you can also use items when readying the Slinger.
OMG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE SINCE THE FIRST WEAPON WORKSHOP! THE SNS IS MY FAVORITE!!!
I recently picked up the SnS and I've been waiting for this video for weeks now to make sure I was doing everything right :).
I started using sword and shield for the giggles, im staying for the versatility
I started with the long sword, Just to use the anime Power, but in this game, fast and Agile weapons are so much better, It makes the battle fluid and enjoiable
I also started using the long sword for the anime move, but i also want to use the light bowgun, heavy bowgun, and the sw&sh, THERES TOO MANY WEAPONS
Just started playing World as my first MH. Thank you very much for these!
Wow, you just made this weapon look very cool, while also making us look very cool in the long run. Your guides are always very useful.
When you see SnS in a montage video,it looks so amazing! But less exciting when playing.
He makes every weapon look so easy to use!
the benefits of playing monster hunter 24/7 :D
The most complete tutorial for weapons I ever seen in Monster Hunter Series!
I was maining Cb because the aesthetics were frickin dope, however combos on Sns are much easier to handle and alot more forgiving. Thanks for the video! ! Your channel rocks!!
Damn, SnS has everything. Now I want the oils
One more move you missed worth mentioning. If you climb a ledge with your weapon drawn and just hit neutral Circle, you'll do the rising jumping slash as if you had done the advancing slash into the ledge. Unfortunately you have less control over the direction of attack, but this is useful when you are right by the ledge that a monster is next to and you are too close to the ledge to start the advancing slash. If you're too close when you try to advancing slash into the ledge, you'll often just do the rising slash similar to the R2 + Triangle attack when you climb the ledge.
Also worth noting, shield attacks do not apply elemental/status damage. Their damage output is based entirely on your raw damage and sharpness level, although shield attacks also don't deplete sharpness. The more you know.
Vauche I bet the weapon workshop plus will add this info
The part about damage/elemental calculations are probably more suited for an advanced workshop, though I still would have expected the tutorial to at least include the mention of the jumping ledge slash. How to effectively use the jumping ledge slash could go into a more detailed workshop though for sure. The TL;DR of it would go something like "Step aside Insect Glaive, SnS has the mounts."
I didn’t know 1/10 of the things you showed. I am so excited to get home and try all these new moves and interactions
These tutorials are perfect the full fight at the end explained is just great
Too early bro. I aint done with the heavy bow gun yet... Lol.
Pls do the Lance. I occassionallyuse it and want to know if there's any special combo or move I can do besides the triple poke or the bullcharge
As always great video right here, also a cool thing about this weapon is that if your sharpness decreases to much you can start hitting with your shield to keep dealing decent damage
ooh my favourite weapon since tri (even used it in underwater battles urgh)
you've really come a long way with your weapon tutorials, they're better than they've ever been (I still remember one old sns tutorial where I was complaining like an ass for not showing the right combos & when to use them thus making the weapon look weaker, btw sorry for that)
keep up the great work my man
(ps there's just one little thing I think you missed, aka pressing circle while climbing/rolling at a ledge in order to activate the jumping rising slash, an alternative to using the X+O attack that can be a little safer)
SNS is so under rated. SNS GANG!!!
You can also do the backstep fresh out of evade, as well. And you don't need to block to use items. Aiming your slinger will also allow you to pop whatever consumable you have in your bar without having to worry about slowing down for the block animation. And you also have free access to your radial menu. I personally never block to use an item. And I don't know if you said it, but none of the shield bashes will proc your elemental damage, however they also don't touch your sharpness either. The mounting finisher also does K.O. damage. But great tutorial. Been waiting for it. Love my SnS. Master Bang for Fashion Hunter.
I've been playing Sword and Shields for months, and only now have I learned that there's a charged rising slash that can mount! 😱
Thank you so much for the help!
90 people don't understand the Godly power of sword and shield
They should all be shot
I honestly dont think the SnS is a beginner weapon anymore. You spent over 10mins just talking about what combos are available, nevermind how to best use them. Infinite combos can lead new players into over-commiting and getting hit. And the back-hops are one of the more difficult actions to physically input in the game and require practice just to get consistent.
Of course, it still has quality of life buffs for new players like fast evasion from any attack and item use without sheathing but in general I find the SnS harder to use properly than many of the other more simple weapons.
Rather being beginner friendly mean you will get less punishment from mistake you make instead of maximising potential on the get go...
I mean it is good to cope a feel of how MonHun play like before you went serious and either try to maximise SnS or switch to other weapon
Personally I think Lance/Gunlance are good noob options because they’re so safe. Scared for you life? Just guard and you’ll be fine. Plus, to kill anything with Lance especially, all you really have to do is spam triangle. It won’t be a super fast kill, but you’ll be safe, and you’ll get through it. You do have 50 minutes after all. (I think a Lot of people seem to forget that you have 50 minutes to hunt something, and this causes them to make mistakes and get carted far more easily than they should...it’s ridiculous how many people I see not healing themselves and just trying to go balls to the walls on the monster.)
@Thomas Johnston To be fair, the Longsword was pretty busted in MHFU.
@Thomas Johnston It definitely is beginner-friendly. I think it also is listed as a 3/3 recommendation for beginners in the game. :)
@@ToasterJam i know this is a old post but as a gunlance main I have to disagree with you, it is alot more complicated with both weapons. In order to bring out the lance potential you have to remember it's defense is his offense and you have to time alot of attacks in order to Fuck up the monsters. Now for the Gublance its is more offensive with some good defense but you have to set up a build in order to bring out the gunlance, even monster hunter world said the gunlance is the hardest weapon to use due to It multiple play styles with what shell you choose.
Thanks for this guide man! I've been playing MHW on PC for a while and I still can't decide which weapon to use.
Absolutely great video! I would definitely like to know how to constantly roll through the roar as well as you do!
Can you do the dual blades next week?
Sword and shield master race
Gentlemen Gamer I completely agree
Crash Helmet you cannot go wrong with sword & Sheild
"Some hunters place an emphasis on form, as seen by the use of the sword and shield.
For them, formality, beauty, and justice are the very essence of our humanity, and precisely what keeps hunters from becoming something else."
Something else being in this case: a great sword wielding caveman who only cares about big numbers.
Dual blade anime masterrace
Being so new to this game, all these guides are information overload! My brain hurts :0
Great tutorial, looking forward to your Insect Glaive tutorial 😌!
How do those buttons translate to KB/M controls? Square = left click, triangle = right?
Triangle is left, circle is right
Does anyone know a good S&S to start with? I’ve seen a lot of people using the Heavy Bang.
Its a solid choice and looks really good as well. a water and thunder sns will go a long way against most monsters. But the water sns looks very, very bland to the pointI dont feel like using it. I have a prefference for truly unique looking weapons so I choose the holyblades and kirin dual blades for those elements.
Barroth club. Good damage but negative affinity, otherwise the rathalos tree ends with the corona which also looks badass af
Deviljho sword and shield is the best so far!!!!!
As a charge blade main I love using the SnS it's a nice change up the hit with the shield when in the air is super satisfying.
Sword shield maim here, MHW first MH game loving it, loving the channel man keep it up brother
So the Hunter is left handed...
Most hunters are ambidextrous, but the guild teaches hunters to guard with their "dominant" arm to make the guard stronger. This makes sense when fighting non-human adversaries. The monsters have attacks and strikes that could crush you, and using your strongest arm to guard with the shield(s) ensures you can put all your force to deflecting or weathering the blow. If you also watch the guarding stance for most shields, they are putting the bulk of their weight behind the shield to reinforce it. This is a common tactic in classical shield training for weathering a powerful blow instead of angling the shield to instead simply deflect it away. Small arms strikes can be deflected. Monsters five to twenty times your size must be endured.
^ This. Although I am too bothered by the lefthanded weapon stance, it makes sense as said to guard with the dominant hand for the reasons he listed.
This theory is broken up a tad by the fact that the Insect Glaive is also a left-handed weapon despite lacking a shield.
It also changes hands over and over during its combos, plus a lot of the aerial attacks are just two-handed. The Hunter using their dominant arm as the arm the Kinsect rests on makes sense, you want to give that bugger stability because insects are very fickle creatures, plus if you're gonna be aiming it at all you want your arm to be stable.
Actually this has to do with the item usage. The Hunter always uses the right hand for consuming items like potions etc and in the earlier games if they had the sword in the right hand the hunter would have basically stabbed himself when using items. They could probaly have done it differently but that was just the easiest solution...
The wait for monster hunter worlds on pc sucks.
Thank you! I've been waiting for this video as I just made the deviljho SnS.
Great video now I can use the Sword and shield full potential!!!!! Thanks Arekkz!!!
I haven't watched the video yet.
I can bet there's gonna be a sentence around the lines of “SnS best beginner weapon“
Nvm, you're one of the first people that don't depict SnS as a beginner only easy af weapon for noobs.

+Maku chan Naa man, I’ve been using this weapon since the PSP games, I absolutely love it! It’s amazing when used well
Arekkz Gaming Have you seen a speedrun from GaRaNa arrekz? He's imo one of the best SnS speedrunners in world. That's SnS usage on a whole new level OwO

The Guard Slash is actually a pretty useful move to use. Its another good option to use for detonating bombs when sleep bombing because you do a slash while keeping your shield up, so it allows you to detonate the bomb and safely block the explosion
Loved the video, one thing you missed that is kinda niche is you can go into the back + circle after a dodge, which is quite helpful if the monster is making you bounce as the falling shield has mind's eye.
I hope you understood what I meant, its a technique I find quite helpful vs Kirin
Am i the only one that realized:
Rathian armor+SnS= Goblin Slayer
Not even close
Is this a weapon even worth using? I’m running Gunlance, and this weapon seems to tickle the monster. I may be using the wrong gear, so please tell me if there’s something I’m missing.
It totally is, although it is not as easy to get full use out of until you really know it inside out.
*_psst_* If you use SnS, elemental damage and status effects are your best friends, especially poison.
I've been using the Bone Hook, with 300 paralyze damage, and have been loving it since seeing this comment lol
The gunlance's rising slash combo is its strongest combo. So strong it makes using the thrust attacks feel useless. SnS is pretty rad, but be mindful of how vertically challenged it is.
After a lot of time played, I'm a bit shocked. I can hit for about 150 damage on my falling shield bash. Monster gets KO'd, then I KO him more. Then he gets stunned by 300(omg) paralysis damage. Gets stunned again. Tries to run, gets FLASHPODDED AND SLAIN
I’m a SnS main weapon player. I love the ability to mount easy and status effect applications. Great for running a heal support set for team fights.
Just subbed and liked love your videos I play Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate but after watchign your guides there I wanted to watch your content for World as well despite not playing it. Great guides man keep it up
I know it is April fools, but I don’t think you are going to fool anyone into using SnS
+Jeniffer L SnS is an amazing weapon!

Arekkz Gaming I especially like the Rarobaan SnS, just spamming the little jump thingy gets them to sleep fast af + impact mantle and the shield bashes, it's pretty gud.
