Quick tip for those starting out with the longsword. If you kill a small monster then you can charge your sword by continuing to hit it. You can literally fully charge all the way to red by hitting things already dead.
Idk why but that sounds sad xD
I just started out yesterday, and people will probably end up calling me a psychopath.. but this is great intel! Will abuse!
You know people ask me alot of times how did i manage to be able to pull off the full spirit combo without even swinging an over head on the monster atleast once because of this tactic, when I've literally just charged it up on a dead kestodon xD
I'm a noob, I don't see long sword in my gear
You can also do this to charge your phials in your charge blade
Shoutout to all the new AND returning players in 2024!
New player here. I'm loving Monster Hunter. It's surprisingly more technical than I imagined but I like the learning curve. I've also made my friends join me to play lol
Got back into it yesterday. I tried Rise on PS4 and thought the mechanics were pretty bad, so I figured I’d give MHW another go.
Step 1. Trip your teammate, Step 2. Trip your other teammate, Step 3(optional). Trip your first teammate again, Step 4. Trip your other other teammate. Rinse and repeat.
Only target the one complaining about trippings :D
As someone who started to use HH and Hammer due to getting the "Kjaar" weapons from ATKT I now realise why mains of those weapons hate this weapon if players choose to go for the head. In one hunt during one of my KO's I couldn't do literally no damage at all due to being interrupted by a longsword each and every time I tried to start a combo. I main IG and thanks to KT I have some of her weapons, it seems quite interesting as it reminds me a little bit of the "adept" style from MHGenerations the gameplay of this weapon.
I am Niss You should comment that on the switchaxe and hammer weapon workshop
Main HAM user here just use the HAM power charge, prevents tripping it's basically flinch free lvl1. HAM also has minds eye built in as well if you use Big Bang or the 360 super charge spinning move. Forgot the name but either move cannot be deflected.
As a LS veteran this is offensive :P
Ive never had so much appreciation for a channel that does gaming tutorials. I stuck to one weapon for more than 100 hours but this guy makes me want to try out every weapon in the game. Great job man. Keep doing what your doing.
True
What weapon did you use?
You should even the machine gun mode of the heavy gunbow is fun to use
Any reason why my spirit meter isn't upgrading? I've landed the last hit, all hits. Am I too low a HR or something?

Shout out to all the PC players coming back to watch because you forgot how to play while waiting for Iceborne.

In Iceborne they added a new move, special sheath, which leads into triangle "Iai slash" which makes your gauge build up quickly like after a spirit helmbreaker, and "Fade Slash" which is a very fast, hyperarmor, grounded alternative to spirit helmbreaker. Also, you can now seamlessly shoot your slinger to stun mid spirit combo.
So the unshealth move is only of you have iceborn?
@@carteranthony8924Correct, you cannot use the new moves or the clutch claw if you do not have Iceborne.
@@codybroadfoot7386no you can use the helm breaker and the sheathe without iceborne only the clutch you don’t have
@@heitorlopes1274 The spirit helm breaker is not a new move, it’s in base game. You cannot use the sheath moves, slinger burst, or clutch claw without Iceborne. You cannot use any of the new weapon moves without Iceborne. Look it up.

You have the most organized and cohesive style of explaining mechanics. I’ve watched all of these videos. I love them. Charge blade is by far my favorite because of your basic and simple explanation of such a complex weapon. Thank you for being great! Happy Holidays sir!!
this tutorial is amazing. I hope you complete the series on all 14 weapons! the slow motion editing is on point. Keep it up!
Goddamn that editing is professional level.
Also I always dodged after the Helm Breaker. Thank you for amping my samurai level.
The Long Sword also gets something called a Weeaboo Bonus which increases defense against Pocky-based attacks.
It also does cringe damage.
@@jonathankusin9509 xD
Despite the game labeling it as a "katana", it has just as much in common with the Chinese nodachi (anti-cavalry sword). Meaning yes, it's great for fucking up weaboo-based monsters

The real web weapon is the dual blades
As a new player, this tutorial was extremely helpful in showing me how to use the long swords! Thank you
I am 150 hours into the game and I still come back to your videos. Learning new things, trying the same things in different ways or changing up your weapon choice. They are great and you are great. Thank You.
I have seen this video like 8 times since u originally posted it, wanna put a like every time, your guides are one of the best around, very informative and useful, thx!
Yoooo I'm so happy overall about this video. I was expecting a "here is how to do the combos" and thats it. Loved the detail u put in and advice as well. Wish some of those random people i help with long sword see this since I'm always get tripped up. Been a dual wield demon user
This is the first of your videos I have watched and it was incredible. You've taken the time to cover all aspects and explained everything perfectly. Thank you :)
Thank you for this. Even years later it's still useful. I just picked up World and I'm having a great time, and this tutorial has helped me use LS more efficiently. I didn't know Fade Slash could let you skip the first slash in the spirit combo, and I didn't know Foresight Slash could lead you directly into a roundslash, so I'll definitely keep that in mind now.
What I've done when playing with others is to just take note of the weapons everyone has so I can figure out what part of the monster I should be targeting. If there's a blunt weapon in the party I try and stay away from the head as much as possible so that they can get their KOs in. The same applies to GS because of its damage output. Basically if you're the heaviest melee hitter then you can target the head, but if you're not, stick to the tail. LS is one of the best weapons for getting tails.

I'm really glad you did the long sword, I love these weapon workshops. You should totally do Hammer next
My boi this is the best longsword guide I could find on youtube today
This is a really good job you did here
Its short compact and informative unlike the other 30 mins guides where you learn actually less
You are a legend man. I have watched this video probably ten times while playing through monster hunter and it is always teaching me new things to get better at the long sword. Keep up the great work!
I just starter using the longsword after using the dual swords for the first several hours. The added range is much appreciated and the damage output coupled with the agility is great! Thanks for the info! It was much needed for combos in the field
Excellent tutorial! Only thing I'd add is that you can link the weak attacks in your endless combo, skipping the overhead and giving you more evade times as well foresight openings.
And also, let the people know they can foresight anything! Including non damaging moves like roars, wind pressure, and tremor shakes.
Lastly, foresight slash can be cancelled mid animation into spirit thrust, it's a great repositioning tool to make sure you land spirit helmbreaker
Really? That's some good stuff to keep in mind! Gives me more reason to get back into longsword, though I'm having a lot of fun playing my makeshift "Baby Bazelgeuse" build. :)
I don't understand your statement about "link the weak attacks in your endless combo, skipping the overhead and giving you more evade times...". I think Arekkz showed it.
About foresight anything - Arekkz didn't say it, but he showed it against Legiana when he foresight slashes at the moment when Legiana roars. (At 10:45)
And true, I knew that one, although this is only for special use cases since I like to start Helmbreaker with 100% gauge, so that I can use a second Helmbreaker in quick succession and afterwards using Spirit Slash to get from White to Yellow, while getting the gauge slowly filled for another Spirit Slash to get to Red. Most DPS in my eyes.
Wait foresight slash can be canceled I don't think I've ever seen that I'm still pretty new to the loan store but I want to try that out
Thanks
BigHalfSteps you can combo circle triangle circle triangle circle triangle endlessly. Never using overhead.
As always that was super informative and thoughtfully explained! Been following you since mh3!!! Thank you for all the help!!! Seriously love what you do for the community ^_^

Dude i've become so much better with this one video alone.
Thank you for being so clear in how you attack, when teaching detail is key
I have to say coming into MHW later on. This guide has been extremely helpful! I watched this a bunch of times when i first started and now am coming back to make sure i caught all the nuances like the step slash into spirit slash. Thank you for your content. Looking forward to Iceborn in January since i play on pc :'(.
Additionally, you can cancel the foresight slash mid way through to perform the spirit thrust. This can be useful if you are already at red gauge.
David Beveridge Why cancel? Its free great damage. Plus it fills up the gauge fully so you can do another combo.
ryosuke kitamura Yeah I know. You don't have to do a final round house and keep the full gauge for your next red bard.
MultiRv90 it’s situational but as Arekkz said if their is an opening, Spirit Helm Breaker will deal more damage than the whole Spirit Combo so it’s better to spend the gauge than use several attacks.
This combo really helps with positioning the helm breaker
This helped me a lot. I never really "googled" anything with regards to Long Sword combos but after looking at a few LS users I've come to party with led me to this video. Up until HR 28 I was doing the basic spirit building combo. I didn't know anything about the Foresight Slash or Helmbreaker ones. So thanks heaps! :) Checking out your bow guide now.
2024 and i’m back again watching every MHW Arekkz tutorial videos 😂
same dude. Tried charge blade and loving it but LS looks so sick
@@Burningeordie Yeah LS looks sick, is sick, has good mobility and damage AND a counter i-frame like wtf x) i understand why it's the most popular weapon
according to the old wyvern sage, long swords are the most used weapon in the game. hunting horn is last. guess where charge blade is?
5th.
wow
NGOtaku Not terribly surprising. LS is relatively easy to pick up, offers a good balance of damage & mobility, and it's a giant fucking katana.
How do you know that? The few times I met him he only told me the most and the least used, not the full list.
he told me just the top, least and my current which was charge blade
I was suprised at how fun the charge blade is. Combining the mobility of SnS and power of GS, plus offering both solid defense and explosive offense (both of which can be increased via phial charges), it is incredibly manueverable and heavily damaging to monsters. At first I was an SnS user, but ever since Arrekz's tutorial I wanted to try using one. Despite its seemingly complicated moveset, once you master it it becomes incredibly satisfying to land devastating charged attacks and chain combos together. I honestly thought more people would be using it, but I guess reality would state otherwise.
No one likes my main weapon... FeelsBadMan
Wow, amazing tutorial as always. I had no idea about the blue sparkle thing, bravo. I love the simplicity of this weapon and complicated it can be to master.
Whoa! This was SO helpful! Thank you! I've been trying to learn the Long Sword, and this was just what I needed!
Shout-out to anyone coming back to these tutorials if you don't know what you're doing in Rise.

This is a seriously fantastic video Arrekz. I've been using the longsword a lot lately, but had no clue how to use it effectively.
Great video, sir. I've been referring to your weapon series in my new playthroughs to help me learn new weapons, and this one in particular got me interested in using the long sword, which has become on of my favorites in the game.
A little elaboration on the jumping attack, it changes depending on the level of your meter. No meter is a single attack that changes into Spirit Attack 2, white meter does two hits into Spirit Attack 3, Yellow does the same, Red does three hits into Spirit Attack 3.
Also, if the monster is vulnerable and you just got red gauge, opening with a draw Spirit 1 attack will do a bit more damage (and I think it might be a bit faster) than a draw overhead slash.
Wow i though i was good with longsword turns out im absolutely shit
This video was very helpful. You articulated the combos, the movement, and timing in such an easy-to-digest manner. Thank you so much.

Yessss, this is my choice of weapon!
rxlyaT And 25% of MH players
I used it since MH3U, but in World I realized how annoying it is for other players to co-op with, how low the dps is, and how basic the moveset is.
Switched over to gunlance this time, having a (quite literal) blast with it too. Not as "smooth" and easy to chain the inputs as with the LS but fuck is it satisfying when you land those full-shellings, Wyvernblasts and exploding knives
Alireza M lets say 40%
Atilla Capar Initally it was 40%, but nowadays its around 20 to 25%
Like Zondac I picked it up in 3u and used it ever since and won't be putting it down anytime shortly
That foresight slash into roundhouse slash is awesome. Didnt know you could do that, and I didnt know about the crazy i-frames it had. Great video

Ive been playing since the mhfu demo and on this game up until high rank I never even knew about the new moves so I beat most of the game the old way.
a masked man haha as well as i
I feel you I had to watch the vid just to see if I missed something, self teaching is more memorable and fun. Still I love arekks vids he does great with the in depth info
I taught myself too but didn't really know how to consistently trigger a helm breaker, that's why I'm here.
Here's a quick lesson from a LS main. When entering a game your first objective is to always go for the tail.
Once you complete that objective, try keeping your meter full with red gauge. I recommend filling it up on any part of the monster, except the head.
Once you have red gauge, feel free to use helm breaker on the monsters head or neck, just be sure not to poke anyone in the process before you stab it.
Once you've used your gauge, you can choose to use it all or fill up back to red.
This is important (im a Hammer main). I absolutely hate Dual Blade users/Longsword users that dont respect this rule.
Always remember as well if ya still think you deserve to attack the head more than a HuntingHorn or Hammer that the hammer can launch you and placing bombs in front of a Longsword/dualblade user while they attack the head can get you 1 damaged and 2 knocked out of their proper place
How i play as a LS veteran: 1. Fill the gauge to red as i attack the tail or anywhere else 2. When i cut off the tail i’ll know my job is done and i’ll attack the weakpoints and use helmbreaker when my gauge is red
Feel like you're trying too dictate the actions of everyone in your hunt and not having fun and taking it too seriously
@@vanitasv2298 some people also need monster head parts🤷🏾♂️
This is by far the best video guide I have seen. Subscribed.
well made and thorough been hard to find quality related to this xD thanks man
The long sword. The destroyer of hammer mains, leader of the weebs.
Though I know everything that would be in the video, it's a really well-made tutorial. I love the side-by-side comparison of the helm breaker with different charge level.
Great video for any new players checking this out. There’s another way to build the spirit gauge if things get difficult which is to use the special sheath and press triangle or Y on your controller and it can also help utilizing the red meter regen to perform your spirit combos
Man before these videos I don’t think I was doing a single combo correctly. Just picked this up on PC, super fun so far. Well done!!
Great tutorial! However I would like to say some things that you missed that are interesting :
- Now you can combo just the thrust with the last slash of the triangle combo : that means you can just do circle triangle circle triangle and you get the fastest LS combo, although not powerful but useful to build up your Spirit Gauge more quickly
- You can now return to the Main triangle circle combo after any of the Spirit attacks, except of course the Roundslash, and that makes this weapon even more fluid in combos than ever before!
- The R2 basic jump attack is a single slash without Lv1 Gauge and you'll have to press R2 two more times before the Roundslash, but it becomes two hits when Lv1/2 as you said and finally it will be *3* hits at Lv3 Gauge, but you'll still have to do a R2 before Roundslash though
- Like in the weapons trailer, you can do the spirit thrust during the Foresight slash animation, before you land the counter hit
- the Foresight actually consumes stamina
Anyway, as I said great video, I did not know you could do the Foresight after the Helm breaker, I hope you find these tips useful as much as it was yours for me :)
Hello Arekkz:
Any Skills/Decorations recommendations you can add?
After watching this I understood the spirit gauge more and learned how to to the "rising slash" that I've seen others use that I did not know how to do, thank you
thanks for the vid bro, subbed and i learned some new things from this, greatly appreciate it man!
just something to note that wasn't in the video, I believe if you do the first three hits of the triangle combo into fade slash, you have enough gauge to finish the shortened spirit combo. I also think its faster than the normal way, but it still might not be enough to hit a moving target. But for example if you knock over a monster with a roundslash to either white or yellow, you can do this combo to ensure that you get a second level up before the monster gets up.
Dude.. I played for 45 hours and had no idea that most of these combos exist. I only did triangle to charge and spirit blade to discharge LOL this is like unlocking forbidden techniques
Just trying out the long sword and this was very helpful appreciate the great content !
So I started playing about a month ago and while the game is very fun I have been having problem with choosing which weapon to main. Watched these videos back in 2018 and thought I would be an bow main given that it basically have everything in a weapon that I love in other games. Long story short I tried the bow, switch axe and the sword and shield (used to like them in MH3 that I played when I was little) but it was the long sword that got me hooked in world. Thank you Arekkz Gaming for making these videos it has been a huge help :D have a good day.
There is one thing to add to this, the aerial spirit blade attack depends on your spirit tier, ex. If you are at red tier then the aerial spirit blade attack will be the third one, which also enables you to finish off with the last hit. Same thing goes for tier 2, you start off from the second spirit blade attack
If you press triangle while airborne during a spirit helm breaker, you also descend quicker than if you don't press anything.
Thanks for the great video, just got back to playing it (now on PC instead of PS4) and this helped alot to try out different weapons.
outstanding info, thank you! just got the game and have already subscribed, thanks! and keep the hunt going my friend!

Me: *reaches white bar*
Me: Don't do the Helm breaker yet!
My brain: *D O I T*
Maybe it helps if you remember white does 1/3'd of the red bar damage (not exactly but a good indicator)
Really glad I learnt both Swaxe and LS in MH4U. LS is absurdly enjoyable and viable in World…
qwertimus I would say its borderline OP but I'd be worried about a nerf then (also, every weapon is borderline OP if used right)
The overall DPS is fairly low though. Same tier weapons against static targets tend to do more DPS, except the GS. It does benefit from having huge range and an easy moveset though, which means more of the hits will land compared to most other weapons, which is where the low DPS kicks in to balance it, but a user who's able to land most hits on almost any other weapon will still be doing more damage. Longer, but easier fights is essentially what you end up with.
I was a IG main in mh4u and I meant to try and main gs and hh but I picked up ls and haven't been able to put it down and play with the others yet...
Austin Holt I used LS for the first 16 hours and have spent the last 10 on CB. The charge blade feels quite a bit stronger tbh and its easier and faster charging phials than it is getting Lvl 3 soul gauge for LS, especially versus flying enemies
I was a stuck on hammer for a while. Since watching your videos ive made near all the melee weapons and the bow amd the heavy bow gun. I play with all different weapons now and the game has gotten alot more fun. Thank you for investing so much of your time. You made mhw great again. Lol

Zach Johnson yes now I am
I don’t know if this was added later, and i didn’t see him mention it, but there is also a move where you push R2 and X at the same time and you’ll do a cool sheathe and slash and that’ll also charge up your spirit meter. I use it to stop my guy from completely sheathing his weapon after the full spirit combo
This is years old, that move wasn’t added until the DLC Iceborne got added
