    Hi! What if the given example was written this way: "Every student must submit his or her assignment by the due date."? Will it make it gender- neutral?

      Hi Joy. That isn't gender-neutral because it excludes people who identify as gender-fluid or gender-nonbinary.

      Thanks for your personal response, Dr. Ribero! If you don't make the sentence plural, as the video recommends, Joy, we'd recommend using "their" in place of "his or her." It is both gender neutral and widely recognized today as standard usage. We'll explain further in our upcoming video about the singular usage of "they." Thanks for your question and your support!

    It is outrageous to expect everyone to use this made-up new "language" when we already have one that everyone understands.

      @SWLF  Před 2 lety +3

      Hmm, well we certainly disagree here, 5P. Like all languages, the English language is made up and is therefore renewed every time that people use it. In other words, as Professor Ribero suggests, the language changes as the result of historical pressures. The lesson is designed not to create a new language but to describe that language as it changes organically to meet the pressures of the present.

      @@SWLF But the list of what people identify as keeps growing and growing. There could possibly be as many different gender categories as there are people...and that's why we are given names. If you don't like your name you can change it but you can't change your chromosomes. Well, maybe someday it will be possible...but not yet.
