I was frantically prepping for class this morning, trying to find a succinct apostrophe rules video to share with my composition students. Alas, even professors wait until the last minute to do stuff sometimes. Fortunately, I found your video. Thank's, I mean, thanks so much from a colleague at Pikes Peak State College in Colorado! :)

I just learnt that "6 ft" is NOT written as "6 apostrophe"

Ha! Though with great power comes great responsibility, Chessematics. Use this information wisely.

Good explanation but I am horrified by A's. If it is a plural only, NO apostrophe. We have many words in the English language that can be confusing but context gives them correct meaning and pronunciation.

Ha! Thanks so much for the comment, Lauren. The A's example certainly illustrates the maddening way in which languages are systematic until they aren't.

Hi, Lauren! This is J.T. Bushnell, the creator of this video. You're right that there are different viewpoints on this convention -- it's one of those matters where different stylebooks offer different rules. The MLA stylebook agrees with you, saying that the apostrophe is appropriate in pluralizing lowercase letters, such as "dot your i's," but that it should be omitted for letter grades. The AP stylebook, on the other hand, recommends using the apostrophe for pluralizing both lowercase and uppercase letters: "dot your i's" and "get straight A's." The Chicago Manual of style is a little more ambiguous, allowing that you should use apostrophes in these situations only when you think it helps the reader avoid confusion. I wish I had been clearer about these nuances in the video, and I appreciate the appropriate pushback you offer here.
