After 17 months of just pinhole photography, I headed out with my RB67

  • For the last 17 months I have devoted my photography to just pinhole, I had every intention of continuing that this weekend, but hadn't planned my week out well to prepare. Also during the week I "found" my Mamiya RB67 under my bed, I had planned on selling this camera so dusted it off and cleaned it up, spending a bit of time tinkering with it I realised and remembered how much of a joy this camera is to use and feel I would regret parting with it and I doubt I would be able to afford another if I did regret it.
So I decided it was best to get out with this beast of a camera, weighing in at around 13 lbs (including tripod), heading over the downs with this camera is suffering for your Art, and I certainly felt it for the next couple of days.
Overall though, I am pleased with the photos I have got from this camera and really enjoyed the process involved in creating them this camera is a beautiful camera to use I love the mechanical feel to it and it really makes you work for your images.
A while ago I did a blog post on this camera for landscape photography.

Thank you Brian, I think that is the best idea leaving it at home 😁

Hi Will, Like many of uas photogs, we suffer for our art. I regularly take out my RB67 ProSD with three lenses and my 055XPROB and 469RC. Whilst I agree it is heavy and cumbersome, the images are worth it! hang in there.

    • @WillGudgeon

Definitely worth, may just need to plan a more manageable walk / location next time 😁

Great video Will and some great images. Glad you did it and glad you enjoyed it ! I particular enjoyed watching you carry a large camera up a big hill ! 😉Don't sell it !

I was regretting it big time when I saw that hill I had to go up 🤣
Nice to be back out with it though, definitely not selling it yet.

Glad you gave your Mamiya an airing Will. I have a Pentax 67 which is only very slightly lighter and I always say it’s the price I have to pay!!

Firstly Will you have inspired me to rethink my pinhole compositions with a homemade 5X4 that I have, so thanks for that, and secondly, I also have an RB - beautiful camera, great quality but a beast to carry. I'm mid 70s now and anything more than a couple of kms with that camera, tripod and 2 lenses just about does me in. But as usual wonderful images you've produced in this episode. All the best from Oz. (PS I also have the Intrepid 5X4 - lovely camera - 1kg plus lens plus tripod).

    • @WillGudgeon

      Thank you 😁
Yeah it is a beast to carry, going to keep it for shorter walks next time.
I would be tempted with an intrepid, I enjoy large format. The Intrepid cameras workshop is only around 25 miles from where I am, I may be tempted to pop over to see if I can have a play 🙂

Ah, the innocence of youth....I did try to warn you though Will?
On the plus side you did get some really nice images for your effort, so no pain no gain eh?
An added feature of the RB you failed to mention is that it has the potential to become a pretty effective weapon should you ever feel threatened by would be assailants. I mean, who'd fancy getting hit on the noggin with that?

Got to suffer a bit, makes me appreciate the image a bit more 🙄😁
It certainly is a good self defense weapon , may pull a few muscles trying to swing it around though 😀

Wonderful video, and very different from the usual! I love the RB67. Probably my favourite camera, but not the most used because of the size and weight.

Thank you Rom, it is a fantastic camera and won't be the last time I'm out with it, but likewise bit to often because of the weight and size, save it for a shorter walk next time

Hi Will, enjoyable video as per usual. I remember first watching your channel five years ago, you was using the RB67 then, I too have a RB67 with three lenses, I also have the 8x6 motorised back which gives a better format imho, I can't remember the last time I used it (because of the weight) I find it easier on my back to use a 4x5 camera with a roll film back (6x9 and 6x12) may I suggest you start a 'just giving/crowd funding' page for your chiropractor treatment lol,

    • @WillGudgeon
      @WillGudgeon  Před rokem +1

Thank you Michael I appreciate it ☺️
6x8 back, I didn't realise they did them just started looking at them on eBay now 😉.
How many frames do you get with 6x8?
Lol, I may need to start a crowdfunding page to fund treatment, I was feeling it for 2 days after I was out with my RB 🤣
A shorter easier walk next time I think 👍

@@WillGudgeon you get 9 exposures Will, You have to turn off the power if you want to operate the shutter independently as it will wind on when the mirror goes up but you can use it without batteries anyway. Just need to check your body has the correct baffle, it should have 6x7 and 6x8 etched on the outside of the mounting plate👍

With both your pinhole cameras and also this Mamiya you seem to favour to shoot rather low to the ground.

Yes, I have always favoured a lower angel, but in this occasion the wind was very strong, so a lower camera should be less affected by the wind.
