Kodak Ultramax 400 Review - Is this film a good alternative to pricey Portra 400?

- I am a big fan of Kodak Ultramax 400. This 35mm film stock is quite appropriately priced and offers valuable characteristics that make it worth your time. Kodak Ultramax 400 definitely isn't perfect and has some flaws to reckon with. Nonetheless, it should occupy a spot in your film photography kit.

Content like this is exactly what I need as someone who's just getting into this hobby. The direct statements about the pros and cons and the use cases of different film stocks. Especially for someone who's budget conscious, it helps me decide how to spend my hobby cash.
good! glad it was useful
Vincent Perry Jr sent me here. Great channel, man. Just subscribed.
much appreciated! having a good time creating content for the community - thanks for the support 💪🏽
Great video man! I enjoyed you in-depth review. You give off a really genuine vibe. I also like how you try to reply to every comment. Keep up the great work 👌🏽.
thanks for watching! i appreciate the feedback 😊
I like these kind of film reviews, I’m subscribing right now
great - thanks for watching! glad you like it
great video! just picked up a few rolls of this at my local walgreens. can’t wait to try it out
Thanks for watching. I don’t think you will be disappointed. The colors pop and are very vibrant 😀
Solid content as always 👍I really like the warmth and feel Ultramax 400 gives compared to Fuji's offerings in that price range. I have yet to shoot any of Kodak's professional color film but I am curious to see if Portra lives up to the hype.
agreed! this film def is a bit more inviting and warm. portra may feel overrated based on the price, but it definitely is good at what it does. at the end of the day, the film/camera doesn't matter as much as the photographer 😊
Straight to the point. You killin it boss. Look forward to learning more from you
thanks for watching!
Just used some Kodak Ultramax 400 this past weekend before peeping this vide and can't wait to see how they came out. Subscribed! Looking forward to more of your content
Dope! Yea I need to shoot some ultra max now that it’s summer!
Hi I really like Ultramax for the colour pop too. It’s been great during lockdown to use for taking photos of all the different posters, flags etc that people have been putting up. I agree that it is a good walking around film.
Found you via Analogue Wonderland live. I’m enjoying catching up with your channel.
hey totally agree! its a versatile film and is just good for basically anything.thanks for supporting the channel! hope the live chat was worthwhile 😊
Doing Film Things the live chat was definitely worthwhile, a lot of food for thought. I’m probably older that a lot of the audience but your comments about engaging and really understanding what you are voting for is absolutely vital. I’ve always used my vote, it’s not really that long ago that women had to fight to be able to vote at all and I am forever grateful to have this freedom.I have two ‘kids’ both early twenties and I have always encouraged them to vote, I do believe a lot of good change can come if the power of the voters is harnessed in the right direction. I know a lot of younger people don’t believe that their vote will count for, or change anything but there absolutely is power in numbers!
wholesome guy. im glad i subscribed

Great review :) Im so glad I found your channel!! Subscribed
thanks for subscribing 😊
Newly subscribed. Saw your Fujicolor Superia 400 video and enjoyed the commentary. Good work. Love from Austin, TX.
thanks for watching! glad you enjoyed the videos 😊
I appreciate this channel. Super knowledgeable . Also I miss living out there
Thanks for watching. I appreciate you 😃
thank you!!! i’ve been looking for a fairly cheap film since my mum gave me her old film camera and this one seems great
Awesome! Welcome to the club 😃 have fun
Good review! I've never shot Ultramax 400, excited to give it a shot! I have thought Kodak Gold 200 was also a comparatively cheaper option to Portra 400.
both are great options. but 400 gives you a bit more versatility 😊
I agree that Ultramax 400 is a great general use film. The color is always reliable and I am able to work with it well in Lightroom after scanning. I've been given a lot of expired rolls over time, and I've found it to be nearly as reliable even when the film is old. Now I want to go buy some to have around! Thanks for sharing.
Agreed! I shot some recently and still really like it!
I've only shot Ultramax once and I thought it was a bit too saturated, but you got the colours really nice in these sample photos.
thanks! yea, they can get quite punchy but i also find myself doing that a bit when editing. it def becomes a bit of personal preference
Great videos mate. Just seeing your channel now. Cheers from Ireland
thanks for watching! i appreciate the support
Doing Film Things cheers mate. Might have to catch ya in London for a walk about photo shoot sometime
3:35 love those posters. Sick photo 🔥
thanks for watching!! appreciate it 😊
Great video very helpful. I have just picked up 3 rolls of ultra max 400 and was curious as to how it would shoot, this video has helped to give me an idea. What website are you using to buy your film?
nice enjoy! i buy from all over, no specific one source
Love your vidoes. May I know do I need to use flash during indoors and outdoors for this film?
it depends on the light. there is no single rule 😀
Recently shot my first roll of Ultramax in low light. Really looking forward to the results.
cool! hope it goes well
it does really well in low light
thank you for the great review of Kodak Ultramax 400. 3:55 what do you mean by edit either film or digital? I thought once you're editing on LR the image is already digital
i shoot digitals sometimes as well. thats what i was referring to 😊
@@ribsy thank you mate ◡̈
Like your style mate, keep it going!
thanks! appreciate the comments 😊
Nice review! Cool channel, just started following you!
thanks for watching 😊 i appreciate the support
I think a lot of people go with the over exposed look with portra which gives it that pastel colour. Kodak Ultra Max is pretty vibrant and saturated off the back so when you go to over exposed it the white detail would completely vanish knowing it doesnt handle harsh light well.
yea thats a good point. it probably doesn't behave as well as portra. but i wouldnt sell it short!
Great video. I actually have a roll loaded in one of my cameras. The Pentax zx 50 was my first camera. I had planned to do a video on it as well as comparing Ultramax and Gold. I've gone on two trips where I shot Fuji Superia 400. I ended up creating a couple books from them. They are featured on my channel . Another great video. Thanks. 👍✌️
thanks for watching. i am a fan of Gold as well. just got a bunch of rolls in the mail and am excited to shoot a bunch.
@@ribsy niiice. Will you be doing a video on the Gold?
I have Fuji 200 and just bought the ultramax400. Would the 400 be good in a lowlight party surrounding?
It could work. But you still need some light
Kodak UltraMax is my go-to film!
not a bad option! i def keep a few rolls in my stock
Good review! Very helpful.
Thanks for watching!
I've used this film with a Pentax K1000 and bounce flash, and the results were amazing--rich, vivid colors!
yea! the colors really are vivid
My camera is a point and shoot olympus stylus that shoots 38-115mm so can I still use 35mm film?
Correct
Kodak Proimage 100 is my poor man's Portra and its awesome.
oh interesting. i still have never shot with pro image and really want to. will check it out soon!
Subbed. Great breakdown.
welcome aboard
Found some from my childhood how do i extract the pictures from them, I don’t have a camera or anything
Need a camera to use the film
how well would do this do during golden hour?
I think it would do great!
please do a vid on gold and color plus if u get ur hands on those stocks
i definitely will! those are up next soon 😬
Thanks man! First time shooting film here
thanks for watching. good luck with your jump into film 😁
@@ribsy 📸 ♥
Did you shoot it at box speed?
yup! didn't try any other speed. curious how it would hold up otherwise
@@ribsy a lot of people say it's better to shoot at 200. haven't tried tho
Thanks man.
np - thanks for watching!
My local Kodak shop only sells ultramax but it's only £6.00 for a 36exposure roll.
Not my favourite but I think I that's because I have only shot it in a point and shoot and probably when 400iso wasn't needed.
Looking forward to put a roll in my yashica electro and doing some Street photography.
Also going to try pushing a roll to 800.
Ahh yea good point
Great info. Thanks my dude. And I'm jelly of that sick beard. I wish I could grow my shit like that. Subbed.... ✌🏾🚀
haha the beard is back!
@@ribsy You da man 😁
ultramax 400 is hands down my favourite film to shoot portraits on, especially when capturing pinks and purples and reds. Too bad rolls nowadays are £8
Yea it’s a good one. I need to shoot more
love the pictures
thanks for watching!
Good stuff bruh.
thanks for watching! 🤟🏽
This video got a like and you got a subscription just from the opening of this video
amazing - thanks for the support!
Thanks or the video! Uk prices are a bit crazy must be inflation atm
Yup they def are
fast forward a year and a half and due to supply issues a roll of ultramax 400 is now more expensive than a roll of portra. wild.
LOL if you buy from resellers, yea
I’d like to see a comparison to lomo 400
Yup
You should talk about fuji superia 400
i did! i have a different video about it 😊
@@ribsy awesome channel man ill check it out!
shit. Shot my first roll last week. Super sunny and I shot with the pentax ME on Iso 200, so it should be overexposed.
I hope I didnt messed up.
im sure it was ok
I pay $27 for three rolls. Averages out to about $9 per roll.
Not bad for modern prices
Another alternative is Lomography 400. When it comes to digital scanning output I cant really tell the difference among these films. But I often telling lie and joking to all my fellow film dudes that Ultramax and Lomo 400 ain't no win against Portra. Why? Because if they know it's comparable then the demand will rise, and the price will escalating too... Haha.
haha fair enough. now that summer is here, i need to shoot more ultramax!
Have u alway lived in London
nope! im from NYC
@@ribsy if you don’t mind me asking, what brought you to England
I overexposed a roll of Portra 160 by only 1 stop, and the highlights were blown in a lab noritsu scan. I don’t think Portra has that great of a highlight range.
interesting. most people like overexposing portra
@Doing Film Things, maybe theFINDlab blew the highlights in the scan/post processing?
You’d get more out of this film shooting it at ISO 100 or 200, instead of the box speed.
That defeats the purpose imo. Especially considering it’s more expensive because it’s 400 speed
i found very discriminatory the use of "poor" people just for using cheaper film.
definitely had zero intention of offending anyone. it is a commonly used phrase in the US that has been widely understood to cause no offense and is used colloquially
@@ribsy maybe thats the problem. We need to rethink that kind of common phrases.
Juan Calvo, or you need to work on not looking for things to be offended by.
@@joeltunnah and what are you looking for now?
You lost me with all that BLM bullshit at the beginning.
Unsubbed.
Ok
Damn, who hurt you?
