- With the rising price of Kodak film, specifically Portra, I've been looking at alternatives that can still scratch that itch, without breaking the bank. From other Kodak film to fujifilm, in this video we discuss budget, beginner, friendly, color film that can be shot in any 35mm camera. Let me know what budget, alternative film to portra is your favorite.

You can still get superia 400 in Walmart if you’re lucky, last time I saw it I stocked up and got it for $23 for a 3 pack.
oh yeah my walmart always has in stock and i live in Louisiana
hell yeah, great to hear!!
Or cvs I always walk out with 4 boxes
Its on sale for $19 right now got myself 2 boxes 👌🏾
Illinois here, and I always get 2 3 packs when no they come
People forget that black&white is still an option. It's cheaper in terms of film cost, and HUGELY cheaper if you are a true hipster and develop at home :D
Definitely! Not a great option if you're trying to shoot color though ;)
Heck yeah. I’ve been doing foma/Arista for $5 a roll. And then you can squeeze even more out of a roll with a half frame camera 🤘DIRT cheap
The crazy part about all this is, that even as of 5-6 years ago or so, you could get porta 400 for ~$5-6. C200 or colorplus 200 was around ~$2-3. Prices are ridiculous these days.
it is crazy isn't it? Especially with the popularity.
Wait fr?
@@devinccimarquez788 Yup. I got into film around 2017. I recall buying a 6 pack of 35mm portra 400 off amazon for around $32.00, minus tax. I got a 5 pack of colorplus 200 for around $13.00 before i took them on a trip abroad.
These days, Kodak Gold costs $8.00-9 its ridiculous.
Definitely some nice alternatives! I've been shooting a ton of Gold 200 and Lomo 400 in 120 and I'm really happy with the results, even when shooting portraits.
Agreed!! I'm really stoked to see some results from 400D!!
Here in the Los Angeles area Fuji Superia 400 and C200 can be found at drug stores like CVS and Rite Aid for $30 for a 3 pack. Even when these films are out of stock online I can find them at these locations.
That's good to hear that even LA can keep It stocked at certain stores!!
Nice one dude! I was a big Ultramax 400 shooter before the price went way up
before it went up? When i started shooting a year ago 3 rolls of 24 exposures was around 27 dollars. I've switched over to Superia because it is (allegedly) the same thing as ultra max. Same price, but with a bonus 36 exposures.
@@jeraldjoyce2995 yeah I believe that same 3 pack of 24 exp was $19.99 before Kodak went up across the board
Look into getting Vision3 250D film. Developing it yourself makes it the cheapest way to take color pictures. I just got a short end with around 150 ft for $60. But you gotta dev it yourself, because of the remjet.
Getting my hands on a roll to test out for a video!!
I’ve been bulk loading and shooting 500T for a year already and it’s my favorite film stock with the cost being around $7 a roll too it’s undefeated.
do you develop it yourself?
That's awesome!! Do you develop yourself?
What is the song in the first half of the video? I've heard it before but I can't remember who it's by and it's driving me crazy.
Reflx labs has a 400d and 800t option to rival cinestill's offerings. They're on PREORDER right now but when it's in stock it goes for $11.99/roll. I've mostly been shooting Gold since I bought a ton of it as soon as it was available and the portra line went skyrocketing in price.
Wow, never heard of these films!! Have you tried them?
@@metalfingersfilm I bought one of each from my local lab, still waiting to have the 800 developed but the samples I've seen are literally the same as cinestill.
I buy Fuji Superia at my local Superstore. $21 for a 3 pack (they also have Fuji 200 for $20 a 3 pack). Definitely my go to these days with the price of other film stocks. Also Vision 3 films can be processed at home with c41 kits, you just have to wash off the remjet.
At least one of the frames you grabbed of Insta was tagged as multiple films.
Ive been shooting Superia 400 from Walmart for years. While everyone i know struggles to get Portra. Ive been shooting Superia and loving every second. For context, I shoot mostly weddings and Ive never had a bad thing said about it.
Dang, I just shot a wedding and shoulda gave it a shot!!
Recently shot some dubble film bubblegum 400 and i was blown away by the results. The colors were pretty close portra i would say when overexposed by half a stop or so
Damn, never heard of this film before...
The reason Kodak's cine film stock like their 250D or even the 500T (Cinestill 800T alternative) is difficult is the Remjet layer, if you remove it using a chemical process you can still process using C41
Ahh I see I see, I got some sent to me for the channel, so I'm eager to test it out!!
I am loving Superia 400 particually when used with Takamur glass.
Really? What body are you using?
if you're in europe, don't sleep on adox color mission, it has a fantastic retro look and is "only" 12,99€ a roll, but it is always sold out quickly
Just shot some of those rolls, should be a new video about them in the next week or so! :)
Very useful video, just a suggestion is to also list the price of the film in 120 format.
Good call!
I have receipts where I was paying $9.00 for 4-packs of Fuji Superia 400 just 2 years ago. This is depressing.
I feel the same way, homie.
No I think that the Lomo films is either repackage Kodak Supra or Ektapress film from the late 1980's to the 1990's as the Lomo 800 I think that it is Kodak Ultracolor 800 or Supra800.. Still I use it, and love it. and it is affordable....As even though that Gold 200 in 120, I still like the Lomo's films, as I needed that extra Nickel stop. Good Video....
Thanks Alex!
My friends at Midwest film co are developing ecn2 and there great people to work with.
keep up
Thanks for watching Yan!
You can still find Superia 400 at CVS for $30 for a 3 pack in April 2023!
If you search up on Walmart fujifilm super x-tra 400, you can find it now for $19.18 for 36exp 3rolls which breaks down to $6.39 a roll. WHY is it this cheap? I have no idea as in the same search result, you'll find the same box of 3 for $48.90. I'd pick up more at this time to see why it's so cheap but honestly I've stockpiled so many that there isn't a need to. I also lucked out on a "backorder" pre-order that I had placed on adorama for $16.99 for a 3-pack about a YEAR ago that just got fulfilled. Came out to 15 rolls for $5.66 a roll. Ngl, felt like a winner lol.
Damn what a W!! hahaha
Just checked walmart website and Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400 is on sale for 19.18 for a 3 pack of 36 exposures
It’s a glitch though and won’t let you add it to your cart been like that for months
Gold 200 is still the cheapest In Canada for medium format at about $14 a roll.
Very nice!! I've been enjoying Gold quite a bit, as well!!
at 2:38 you said Gold 400, then continued talking Gold 200? Is there a gold 400? Love your Videos!
It's ironic how film is cheaper in Switzerland than the US. It's currently CHF 14.50 or $14.82 for a roll of Portra 400 from the Swiss Leica Store of all places...
Damn!! That's really shocking... I went to Zurich in 2018 and couldn't believe the prices of everything!
I’ve been using the Lomo film but honestly I still love the Portra better (maybe that’s too obvious a statement?)
Me too, haha
i want to see pro image 100 in stock again
Kodak Ultramax 400 and Kodak ColorPlus 200 are also great options
Indeed!!
Film pricing is crazy these days. I can’t justify shooting film unless for a special project. I started in film in motion pictures then photography you can’t beat it (my opinion) it is sad that nowadays most labs won’t even give you the negatives. Let’s hope for better film days ahead!
Hmm all the labs I've ever gone to are happy to give back negatives!!
@@metalfingersfilm that’s why I wrote, “most” labs. I’m in south Florida. Maybe where your from they do? Hence, “most” peace be with you.
@@labradax I don't think that's the case. In fact, I think "most" labs do, in fact, give you back your negatives. Every single lab I've heard of, outside of Walgreens and Walmart, sends back negatives.
@@metalfingersfilm I see, call Pittman photo and ask them, if they give you your negatives then let me know.
@@metalfingersfilm by the way those pharmacy stores use to give back negatives not to long ago. Probably before you shot film. ;)
yo fuji superia x 400 is like 25 ish at walmart and easy to fin
Damn, gotta keep my eyes peeled!!
you should compare it to kodak ultramax400 instead of portra400
Ultramax 400 is decent! I have a video coming out soon talking more about budget film types.
motion picture is only like $5 even remjet removed is $7 if you order them straight from China like vibe film or cyberpunk films.
Link me?
Where is film this expensive for y'all? If you buy online, sure, but most of my local photo shops have Portra 400 for $12 a roll.
I'm in Milwaukee, US, and there's only one or two film shops here, so not much for choices. Sadly, you'll probably be seeing the prices hike up near you as well.
Fuji superia 400, ultramax 400 and some Lomo 800 and some random expired films once in a while
I went to Walmart and got superia for $22 a pack
a 3 pack?
@@metalfingersfilm Yes, that makes it $7.33 each for one of my favorite film stocks. Walmarts in the middle of nowhere always seem to have superia for cheap (but like, be chill about it, I don't want them to figure out how much film actually costs and raise the price on me.)
Fuji film doesn’t look like portra, great video though
That's not the point, the point is cheaper, alternatives that you can shoot instead of portra.
*Portra
holy shit, I think you're the first person to notice lmao
