When to think about putting supers on in early spring. *Read description.

Spring honey flow and supering the hive giving room to the colonies is important, so there is enough space for the bees to continue building. By monitoring the hives giving more space will also deter swarming at this early stage in spring. But make sure the bees have food stores in the brood box by hefting/lifting the hive for a good idea of weight "if you can't do inspections depending on weather," before adding supers. Adding supers will give more space but also negative space for the cold to linger, so make sure your colonies are ready for the change, hence the 80% rule.
