  • Welcome to our latest video, where we'll be discussing the difference between the Lengstroth and Lengstroth Long bee hives. As a beekeeper, I recently built a Lengstroth Long hive in anticipation of our new bee colony, and I want to share my experience and insights with you.
First, let's talk about the differences between these two types of hives. The traditional Lengstroth hive is a rectangular box with removable frames that hang vertically. In contrast, the Lengstroth Long hive is a longer and narrower box with horizontal frames. Both hives have their advantages and disadvantages, and it's important to choose the right one for your specific needs.
In this video, I'll go through the process of building the Lengstroth Long hive and explain why I ultimately prefer it over the traditional Lengstroth hive. We'll also talk about the importance of using foundation-less frames, which allow bees to build their own natural comb without the use of plastic foundation.
As a bonus, we'll take a look at our neighbor's Lengstroth hive, which uses plastic foundation. We'll discuss the pros and cons of this approach and why we prefer to use foundation-less frames in our own hive.
By the end of this video, you'll have a better understanding of the differences between the Lengstroth and Lengstroth Long hives, as well as the benefits of using foundation-less frames. Join us as we explore the fascinating world of beekeeping and learn how to choose the right hive for your needs.

Why do you keep those honey hive boards about 1/4 inches apart? Can you seperate them by a foot without any consequences? TY!

I'm in the UK. Im looking to build a National format horizontal hive.
You cant so easily do all the clever manipulations with a horizontal hive. But, I expect horizontals are easier to work on.
I'm interested in the difference in honey production and over winter performance between the 2 formats.

Horizontal Hives are way easier to work on and manage. I'll see what I can do moving foreword to show you the differences between them!

Have you found that the colony will be larger with the topbar hive? Seems to me that they wouldnt be looking to swarm as much every spring as they have more room etc.

It mostly encourages you to check more often and catch swarming early. It’s just way easier to see and access everything. It’s less of a chore to check on them if you know what I mean.
