- On April 14, 2014, the terrorist organization Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from the town of Chibok, Nigeria. Around the world, the crime became epitomized by the slogan #BringBackOurGirls -- but in Nigeria, government officials called the crime a hoax, confusing and delaying any efforts to rescue the girls. In this powerful talk, journalist Stephanie Busari points to the Chibok tragedy to explain the deadly danger of fake news and what we can do to stop it.

It's interesting to use the term "alt-right" like that, as alt right is quite the term to be throwing around, and you seem to not understand the meaning behind it. Who are these "alt-righters" that you speak of?

I feel like this is low key the greatest talk ever. In her last sentence, she explains how this is just a larger version of an intrinsically basic issue. Sharing information is important and fantastic and powerful, however there is a time and a place and a method. A government lying to its people is terrible, but so is gossiping and betraying trust among a set of friends. A thousand thumbs up wouldn't be enough to share how much I loved this talk.
Exactly, there should be a way to report a friend who's saying things not mandated as correct thinking. We have models for this - Communist East Germany, you could give your friends name to the Stazi, or the KGB in communist era Russia. Yes - you are so right - let's invite totalitarian rule into our bedrooms you complete idiot. It worked out so well for the North Koreans. No free thought!

I was highlighting how I found insight in this talk about a way I could treat my coworkers and fellow humans nicer by understanding that my opinion is just as valid as theirs, without either of us being wrong and therefore by me giving more thought of what I say and don't say and the tone of my voice and my choice of words. But if you see this video as communist and freedom restricting I'm sorry to have triggered you. It is not how see it.

In 1973 a US Marine was guarding Seabees burying Sarin and VX rocket systems in the dunes of Turkey. He doesn't think Assad is gassing his own people. The college has 12+ armored personnel carriers and air defense systems on the beach next to their airstrip, obvious photoshopped areas of the facility, underground entrances, garbage they can't or won't throw away, which also resembles US weapons crates. The old port north of the college and the recent tailings match the description given by the Sargent. Google maps shows these things fairly well.

Wow, I expected a water-is-wet kinda talk and response. It's bewildering how people have come to distrust media that has informed our parents and grandparents, simply because they report on issues that some of us happen to disagree with. I see what happened with this kidnapping, but americans equating it to their own news troubled really need to re-examine themselves. American and Nigerian governments? Quite a different discussion. The talk has a good lesson to it though. Cross-reference.

Boko Haram has a history of being 'merciful' towards women, while having no qualms about killing men.
Oh yes they were killed, burned alive and other horrible deaths in many instances.
But those deaths aren't what we should be talking about ever, because what was done to these girls is far far worse than the deaths of boys.
magottyk well, they werent reported on. Oh the mainstream media KNEW but only said it were some "people" kidnapped again. No one batted an eye. But OH when they kidnapped GIRLS the western world got on fire, the whole world chanting "bring back our girls" together.
Sweet isnt it. The girls were released eventually if i recall correctly.
But every single one of the boys were killed. Just like the thoudands before them.

I tend to avoid any sorts of news all together as an attempt to only trust what I see in person. Do I have a responsibility to consider problems outside of my day to day? Doesn't it seem that over time, humanity discovers/moves towards interaction which is loving, compassionate? Does it make sense to push moral values upon individuals that have yet to discover the truth of them from scratch? What is truly the reason for the spread of the popular civil rights movement? Someone please weigh in here, I'm young and uncertain of my responsibilities toward my fellow humans.
