- Nakamichi may be gaining popularity again with the Nakamichi Dragon 11.4.6 soundbar. But long before the Shockwafe and the Dragon. Nakamichi built real quality hifi components. Famous for their cassette decks, such as the Nakamichi Dragon, Nakamichi was a high end audio company in the 1970's through early 2000's. This was their RAREST System. The NAKAMICHI SYSTEM ONE...

You guys really enjoy what you do ! That keeps things interesting 🤔
The warehouse was cool but destroying things suck, other people seach for the parts and its not been made any longer.
Again thank you for the shirt and studio tour and for fixing my 8 track player
Maybe less selling. Thought this was about Nakamichi, not if you see anything you want call us.
I wish I did not see that sony get smashed. I had one identical to that and it sounded really good. Wish i still had it and didn't sell it.
It probably was a fake one
I wish I could get mine to work..
There is a lot of great vintage audio in that storage room.
Tons everywhere!
Great video, there's so much history behind each of these systems. Can you do a video on binding post replacement?
Cool video , I found out about the rack when I found the 600 tape deck & 610 pre amp , here on Big Island in Hilo. Mine are silver face but I have the black faces & handles still wrapped . The tape deck is perfect but the pre amp still needs some work , it drops a channel . The tape deck was a simple fix . I would love the rack but getting the components in Hawaii is a major challenge .
oh yeah, baby, Nak Dragon cassette player was king...
I'd wanted a Dragon since reading the first review in 1983, finally got one in 1995 and will never part with it--I think most people don't understand what really makes it special (NAAC, Nakamichi Auto Azimuth Correction) but in my opinion it met and exceeded the hype, solving one of the biggest problems inherent with cassette tape. I can't imagine parting with mine (and after seeing how these guys treated that poor old Sony RTR I've promised my Dragon it won't ever have to leave FL :D ) but if someone offered me a pristine Nakamichi 1000 of any vintage, Tandberg 3014A, or Technics RS9900us in trade it would at least give me pause for thought. :) Shame what happened to Nakamichi, once known for their pursuit of perfection and now barely in existence if at all.
I have that Nakamichi System One rack with the components installed and wired. It also has the platform on top for a turntable too.
Whoa really! Send pics to sales@just-audio.com
It's an amazing sight to see the rack filled up with all the matching 600 series components. An experience that's unfortunately inversely proportional to listening to it.🙉🙉🙉
"I didnt know these existed" .. If you spend enough time on ebay, browsing like it was a museum, you'd get to know of a LOT of stuff one wouldnt otherwise see.
I have seen quite a few of these complete systems over the while, just in the UK alone.
I love the monster dial on the tuner!
I have a complete Nakamichi System One. I was my Dads, I had it in my room at school, and now 25 years later it’s in my house , and the chrome end cap Gale speakers. It reminds me of the monolith from 2001 Space Odyssey
Nice video!
What’s up with the bait a switch Linny? I thought you were going to show me the Nakamichi rack?
We got "Rack Rolled"!😏
I enjoyed watching your video. I happen to have two full Nakamichi System One Racks, One with a dual amp. I would add a photo or two if the platform would let me.
If you think the Rotel RX802 is wide wait till an RX 1603 comes in!!😂😂😂… great video
Thanks Tony!
My dad bought this exact system back in December’78 at the PX over in Rome, Italy. He shipped it back to the states in his submarine.
Verry good job
❤
i forgetn to refern that this system had a real good sound and needed a good speakers to release it´s quality like big old boxes with a tweeter like in the good old days
Oh yea, our Local Nakamichi dealer back in the late 70s had one of these in his soundroom ... it sat there for a while since it had to compete with the more conventional looking McIntosh and Yamaha equipment he sold!
I recall seeing a Nak rack or two in the day. Had a wedge cassette deck by Yamaha, TC800d. Was advertised as in New York museum of modern art. There was the g model that could run on batteries for remote recording. Traded up to Teac C1
Bring more content on speaker evolution eg front positioned magnet.
That Marantz power out that’s got water damage. They didn’t love him don’t throw him away. He wants a new home.
You guys do a great job on your videos. Very entertaining and informative. Thanks
Awesome Scott thank you!
Nice Thorens TD 125 MK I Turntable in the storage unit. I had a 520
Your guy’s are cool, your vids are great, your shop is really nice,, but….. I’m surprised you guys don’t use more mats, pads, cushions etc on those shelves and racks to protected the surfaces and edges, faces, controls etc of the gear you have coming in there.
It’s very easy to really scratch, gouge, scuff and ding stuff when you store, handle, shelf of move stuff the way you guys seem to quite often. Smooth it up guys, maybe go *a little* more gently with that stuff. Respectfully, you guys are makin’ me a bit nervous sometimes.
Otherwise, keep up the good work. Love your channel -it’s becoming one of my favorites.
P.S.: I’m a grouchy and opinionated old OCD guy who’s designed, repaired, refurbished all variety of vacuum-tube audio gear for over 30 years. So, please forgive my critiques.
How is it possible that you weren't familiar with the Nakamichi System One?
Never saw it on the rack
I had the nakamichi 630, it is a pre-amp/ tuner. had it hooked up to a harmon kardon citation 16 power amp.
I worked at a HiFi store that sold System One's. I even have a picture of me next to the display with Nakamichi speakers.
Scott, I'd loce to see that, send that and any other stereo store pics over to me at sales@just-audio.com
What are the chances that you could review dbx stereo equipment? I got into them when I was stationed in Japan in the late 80’s. Curious if they’re even still around. Thanks
Have you sold the Nakamichi mini system? If not, I am interested.
Can you get the Panasonic SC-TMAX50E-K and check if it has 2000 W :)) ?
We get it , you have so much gear you can smash items we would like to have, and repair. We are just mortals.
hi... I think you lost your mind when you threw that sony ....anyhow news about the model Viking Retro-Matic 220?
On the contrary. As a tech myself, that's the best Sony service job I've ever seen. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving component.🤗
@@joerosen5464 ok you know better
No reel to reel decks were hurt on the making of this video, the one trown was just the shell of a long lost reel deck soul
"What rack? I've never seen it. Nor did I know there was a rack for these Nakamichi components." Damn kids. LOL
Dude that's my system @3:38 !
Niiiicccceee
That's Awesome!!! Thanks for having such a sick system!
@@LennyFlorentine I truly hope you find a way to complete yours! It's a unique piece of audio and design history this one, happy hunting!
I have a cassette deck and I'm looking for the rest of the components including the rack.
Wow Very Nice
What about adding one of the vintage vertical turntables like Mitsubishi?
We had a System One with everything including two huge speakers. Bet you didnt know they had speakers.
Nice!!!
I love storage locker visits. Walls and stacks of vintage audio gear makes this old gray werewolf's blood flow 12 times faster. I might sell my Onkyo TX 8500 MKII for a higher quality piece. Lenny does Just Audio get and service many Dual Turntables. What do you think of Dual turntables. Dual Turntables were made in Germany. The name Dual results from the fact that originally "Dual" turntables worked via being cranked manually or plugged in electrically to run its motor. So "Dual" referred to its Dual use design. I brought 4 Dual's 1219, 1229, 721 and 704 and love em! Lenny you love racks like I love receivers. If successful I'll have clear speakers, in my home office with the Pioneer SX-1980. The crown jewels of my collection. This video was awesome.
I gave Holly a plan for you for the clear speakers. I avoid vintage Duals, lots of maintenance for me, but they are popular.
This review and the comparison with the Monitor Audio got me thinking: who are those people who prefers the bright and detailed sound before the warm and imersive sound? You often hear about this polarization of the "audiophile" sound, but doesn't everyone just prefer warmness? Not to warm, naturally, but still.
Monitor Audio's first speakers WERE warm & natural sounding! Then they discovered how metal drivers enhanced the sound of early digital recordings & Seedy players, and the race to the bottom was on...😘☣️☢️👹
I had one of the slanted Nakamichi’s back in the day, it was pretty cool. I traded it for a nice pair of speakers. But when you smashed that reel to reel tape deck that was a little unexpected. But pretty cool. Think I could get the run capacitor from that unit? I think mine needs one.
Sure would have, but it went right in the dumpster. Those should be fairly easy to find though
I have the Philips N2408 with the original speakers and headphones. Seen that one before?
Yes I have seen it in person once locally!
I still have the Nak 600 cassette deck from it but it needs work. Would you be interested in fixing it?
How do we find yall's ebay store?
ShopJustAudio.com is the main site. Ebay store is Just Audio, try just searching that
I just need a Marantz Cassette Deck you got one say 1985 Ish or so???🔊🔊🔊✅
i found several for sale but when bought they didn´t appear again, i almost bought one but not that good sounding ,also the speakers that came with it weren´t that good but similar to a blaupunkt speakers to a tower compact system but those were incredible good
So what is the purpose of having this great gear sitting in plastic, and inside some storage??? It's not being used nor is it getting newer day by day.I have a Marantz 2230 and 2 others that light up yet don't play. How much would it usually cost to restore?
Looks like a 600 series rack, before they went exclusively 3 head.
Newbie here,
I really enjoyed the show👏
However, I was expecting more about the Nakamichi system one and not a general storage unit hunt. 🤔
9 parts storage hunt, 1 part Nakamichi 😁
Although, it was great to see all those classics.... like the beast Pioneer SX amp etc.😎
Please, just make the video titles a bit more specific as I didn't see much about what I tuned in for. 🤔
Not meaning to criticise, just some feedback from a newbie. 🤓
I have now subscribed as I like you and your way and your channel. ❤
Thank you, we felt the same with this one and appreciate the feedback!
I would've wanted that
I'd have thrown the burger to the ground before that Sony RR. SMH. Love you guys nonetheless.
Hahaha, somethings breaking every week so maybe i need to do a poll on what we break
Why? That Soundburger is about 1000x better designed & more reliable than anything Sony ever made that has any moving parts in it. And Audio-Technica is a reputable & honest Japanese manufacturer, unlike Sony who hid all their Tape Dreck SCREWUPS by sending their entire stocks of replacement parts straight to the crusher (or the bottom of Yokohama Bay, take your choice👹) for any given model about 10 minutes after their last warranty obligations end!🤬
@@joerosen5464 Utter nonsense.
Not sure if you guys showcased one but there is a actual Nakamichi Dragon turntable
Yeah one of our long time customers has one, maybe I'll have to borrow it for an episode
I think the Dragon TT came out some time after the miserable sounding 600 series did. There was never a 600-series turntable, hence Nakamichi didn't put a flat platform on top of the rack. Much less destroy the look of it by allocating any space lower down for a rack mount shelf.
Just checking if you still need the timer LOL
I am not sure how you can get a kick in exploding a piece of equipment on the ground. Some people took pride in building it and someone paid hard earned money for it some day in the past, to those we owe a little respect.
Next time on storage wars...
That intro 😂😂😂
Thank you!
How much for the clock?
Sold
I use to buy systems like that for what you pay for a speaker now.
I would be like a little kid in a candy store
I always cringe on the stacks and weight ratio.. how does everything hold up? Especially the turn tables lid under everything
Never had any trouble, but we are strategic and know the limits on various pieces
@@LennyFlorentine I have been stacking mine in boxes but can't find what is where haha. I like that you can see your items as is. 😎
It's kinda like Jenga blocks.🤗🤔
Just finished meeting a local who may let go of their one owner equipment. Bryston 1b, 3b, 4b and klipsch la scala, first gens. How does one ever put a price on these 🤔
We do consignment, give them our info, we provide a pickup service as well if they aren't local
it´s the only system i know from nakamichi, in a rack ,but used to be sold already assembled not by parts, but very simple(a plus) and not that good
Um... what the heck were you doing with the Sony reel deck? Sorry, but there's just no justification for such wanton destruction of a truly classic piece of gear. Not a fan. I was already on the edge of unsubscribing, but that did it for me.
As for the Nakamichi rack system, I knew about that in the late 70s, thanks to Audio Magazine. They published a compendium of reviews of gear that they had produced since the magazine was founded, featuring gear that was still in production as of the publication date. This was one of the reviews.
✌️
@@LennyFlorentine - 6 months and this response is still as stupid AF. You trashed a reel-to-reel for clicks. FAWK. YOU.
i can live in your garage 😉
Yeah that Sony is WAY past service now Lenny. I want to get some work done on an Onkyo TX-8211 receiver but your behavior gives me pause.🤔( I'll call anyway.)😬
Yeah, you will be good. Trust me, the Sony was way past servicing before I opened it up
Now throw a piece of new gear and see how well it holds up.
Better than any 🧩 of 💩 Sony of ANY vintage! 2 things to know about Sony:
1) If it has any moving parts whatsoever, it breaks prematurely.
2) If the component is more than 10 minutes out of warranty, Sony has ensured that replacement parts are no longer available.
🤬🤮🙄
Yah !
admit it, you are a hoarder. hifi yes, but hoarder yes.
😂 Hey...Linny...Your jumping before you really look is general human nature. And maybe Nakamichi has a diagram online. And the screws are not really a problem if you have a thread pitch gage and a Screw sizing plate. Then you can find those you may need if missing. Oh, and thanks for the list from your haul. I might not be so concerned with the water damage if. As I saw a guy who overhauls Marantz Receivers and he took his Aunt's Marantz 2230 to "The Car Wash!" And took the high pressure hoes and washed the whole thing down. Then at 175 Degrees out it in his oven for 2 hours could have been longer. Then when cooked off plugged it in and with his volt ohm meter checked speaker output. It was good to go. He turned on the tuner No Pro Blema....he did some biasing and I think he may have replaced a couple of resisters he didn't like there output from but they were just not perfect though functional. Mind Blown!!! PS. If you happen upon a HK-630 give me a shout-out. And? How much for the Black and Yellow Sound Burger?
I probably have a 630 somewhere in there. The Sound Burgers are about 200. We have a few black and even less yellow left, they are not going on the website so call for them!
@@LennyFlorentine Oh, and I see on your catalog site you guys are handling Replacement or additional cases for Marantz Receivers you wouldn't happen to have a line on a Black Lacquered Case or a Black Ash case, by any chance? As my 2245 is looking for one she has a Hot Date and really wants to Dress to Impress.
Yeap I can confirm. There is a CZcams video out here where dude took the Marantz to a car wash and cleaned it out. Then put it in his oven at a low setting and air dried it. Next he did his repairs and it worked. That's the real value of a Marantz, you can often subject them to horrible environments and they still work. That used to be one of their advertised selling points. JustAudio did a vid on it. An average Marantz can take abuse that would break the average Pioneer or Sansui and shatter a Kennwood or Sony. Marantz is not as complex and tightly packed as a SX series high watts Pioneer. I want a Sansui G9000 to replace my Onkyo TX 8500 MKII. 😆Darn Lenny he drove me to it!😄
@@AUTISTICLYCAN we have that G9000, couple people on the list already but ya never know
@@AUTISTICLYCAN ya know you gave me a video idea
Someone here is smoking a lot of weed...
Fue desagradable romper la grabadora. Son piezas que quedan pocas y siempre alguien las quiere.
I have a 630
If you can’t find something on eBay, I think I know who’s got it:)
Dude, getting fingerprints all over the vinyl!! 😆😆😆
Oh you just wait, one of these upcoming videos is gonna have just the segment for that haha
@@LennyFlorentine love this channel. Once again it was great seeing you all at Axpona!!
Also loved that your booth was so close to Emotiva’s display as well
Yeah, but it's new vinyl. Undoubtedly sounds better after you play frisbee with it & your dog for a half-hour...😊
Dragon´s are everywhere and will never diappear ,after buying one most of them return to the market ,it´s not that good and more expensive than the best cassettes ever made
And what has this long video to do with the ""Nakamichi System One"? Answer: Almost nothing! Waste of time to watch.
find me an HK930
If you don't need the tuner, I'll let you in on a little secret: Citation 11 Preamp & the matching Citation 12 power amplifier.🤫
@@joerosen5464 those are tough to find too.
Average not high-end, any other brand had better everything, the only pus was the fact that all was looking sober and with diferent design, they never achieved high-end Pioneer quality from far
Violence is not the answer . We have pills for that !
I learned nothing about Nakamichi therefore the title is clickbait.
This presenter prefers acting the tough guy rather than showing any real understanding of period equipment designed to play music faithfully and with finesse.
This man could not even spell "finesse".
Nakamichi of that time period didn't play music faithfully & the only finesse it had was the styling on the faceplate.
So you did indeed learn everything you need to know about owning a 600 Rack.
Nakamichi only got good in the 80's, & that's just the tape decks. The amps, preamps, tuners, & receivers of any vintage are best forgotten about as they aren't worth any further mention; much less a listen.
Crying about being "Rack Rolled"?😘
Have you ever heard of "To be continued..."?🤔
Much less spell it?😉
@@joerosen5464 not true
Their receivers specifically the sa and ta stasis line were highly acclaimed in addition to their stasis amps and preamps.
Couldn't follow any of that.
Let us know if the story is better next week!
Only buy when Japan owned them. Now there Chinese. Pass ✌️
So your gonna put a piece of crap tt with gear like that?
Enjoy your videos, but why tf do you destroy equipment? If you don't want to repair it, ship it to me and I'll work on it! If it's too big or expensive a job, I'll at least part it out. It's not at all entertaining to watch.
Looks like you destroyed a Sony TC 355 r2r. That's my main r2r deck. Very painful to watch.Otherwise, I enjoy your content.
the video started throw reel - boom unsubscribed - not needed - no respect
Dude..I enjoy your channel but you really had to be there and have a decent job to buy something every week either media or hardware.
