The 'Odd Couple' Test - a comparison between the Rally Raid Products BMW G 310GS and the KTM690 in the role of capable round the world adventure motorcycles.
The 2021 G310GS has a slipper clutch and electronic throttle that make it essentially stall proof. BMW also swapped to all LED lighting, and the solid state headlight allowed them to eliminate the rubber shock mounting that caused the annoying headlight vibration flicker at high RPMs.
I have an 08’ 690 with many of your upgrades and love it. I live in COLORADO so from freeways to 13K feet on fire roads to single track it will do it all. Pay attention to what was mentioned in this video and the excuses are gone. Your can reliably go anywhere you want, BRAAP
So, using the Aussie saying: "at the end of the day", if you spend about $4k (US), in aftermarket parts, the little GS is a good 50/50 motorcycle. It gives us, the more dirt focused adventure riders, more reason to wait until KTM releases the 390 Adventure. Hopefully, the R version, assuming there is one, will have spoke wheels. Thank you for an honest review on the little GS.
Another great video. This whole channel makes me want to do adventure riding. Thanks for addressing the questions about reliability of the KTM. It’s easy to get a bad picture from CZcams when videos are watched in isolation.
When I stopped in at RR to see Jon and Liz to replace parts I smashed in Morocco a few weeks earlier, Jon showed me his 310 prototype that I thought would be a good fit for my wife to replace her F650GS. I think she’s coming around to the idea, but she likes her bike!
It is great to see this comparison. Nowadays people think they "need" big and expansive bikes for adventure ridings, but that is definitely not true. And thanks for mention, what the average speed is, when you are traveling in those countries. I travelled with 17 Horespowers from India to Europe and it was totally fine. Now i am travelling with a Kawaski KLE 500. Was in Kyrgystan, Tajikistan and Albania with it and often far away from the main roads. And it worked very well. I really hope there will be a lot of variety of bikes in that smaller and cheaper class in the future. And i really hope that that people will realize that there is not always a need for those big bikes, and that you can realize your dreams of riding also on smaller bikes and smaller budget. Spend more money in travelling than in bikes ;)
Hey...good seeing u 2 together again reviewing motorcycle...when i see guys riding in india, i think u guys can even took a scooter around the world...sory...i hv nothing to say but admiring ur guys patients...i think the most important thing in adventure rides lays inside a man who hv the guts to go packed n live a long the road as u guys did..i doesn't matter what kind or power the bike hv...the bond we make with the bike will definitely be the joy of the ride...so for those who happen to read my comments... whatever bike these guys recommend, trust me...u will enjoy ur ride otherwise....u r just dont hv that soul of adventure inside of u...u just hv the money to complaint the truth n joy of adventure ride...😀😀
Sideshow here! It was this older video that had me searching for older 690's. As discussed at 2022 BMW safari I picked up the 2016 with the HardKit already fitted.
Nice comparison. Totally agree with you re power of the BMW. Enough for Asia etc but underpowered for long distances on the roads of Europe and America. Still can't understand why no manufacturer is making a more "adventure", "rtw" biased 400/500cc bike that does have enough power and comfort to sit at 110km for longer periods. I know it's been said before but come on Honda, do a mini Africa Twin with the CB500. Yes I could buy a CB500X and fully Rally Raid upgrade it. But how much would that be? Must be talking near to £10,000? I know Honda could do it for less than that!
I had issues with the clutch until I changed to an adjustable lever, the biting point was too far out for my fingers making it harder to control than it should be.
I can sit comfortably at 90-100 on a crf250r...and could have 2 for the price of a 310 plus rr kit. Not putting down the video, just can’t get behind the 310. I can get the Honda worked on anywhere, get parts anywhere, etc. We have all heard it before, I know, but...if he is cramp at 175 cm, which is fairly short for most men, I can’t find a single reason why an average or above average sized man would want it. Perhaps if you are VERY short or just want to show off the BMW badge...
Hey Dave, curious what Klim jersey you're wearing? Couldn't find it on the website, guessing there might be a newer version or something. Always look forward to your videos. Cheers.
I would love to see a comparison of the BMW G310GS against the Honda XRE300 (brazil only) bikes ... the XRE300 comes standard with laced wheels at 21 front / 18 rear and I watched a youtube video showing its top speed at 150 kms ... I can't seem to find any youtube reviews of the XRE300 that are in english, but would love to watch one.

Great vid! Thanks
The 690/701 are no doubt great bikes but once you add the bigger tanks and so forth sadly the cost is just a bit much.
Like the little BMW.. about time ktm stepped up with a 390 adventure I have a 390 Duke and the motor is excellent
