Shame that neither Dafoe or Pattinson received even an Oscar nomination, their acting is top notch and carried the movie

@@DaneofHalves I meant it as, the movie itself is hard to follow. I'd probably not have it as one of my favorites from that year if Dafoe and Pattinson, even if they are the only actors, had not performed as good as they did.

That's what I like about A24, they care less about how a movie is today supposed to be and more about conveying the vision of a filmmaker.....You don't need to be explained everything, and not everything has to make perfect sense...It's like poetry, It's all about conveying an image, a feeling, something that behind telling a story evokes something special in you for whatever reason, it's why i love that we are getting these personal, intricate, unique, confusing mindfucks lmao

My interpretation: The whole movie, Robert is in purgatory. He killed the real Winslow and Defoe is there to torture him psychologically until he gives in and accepts his fate: eternal hell. The island is awful, it’s his final stop before hell, and a test to see how long he can last before accepting hell. He can eat, but it’s disguising. He can drink but it’s sludge. He has sexual desires, but is stuck with a siren. He’s told it’s bad luck to kill a sea bird, but it nags at him everyday. Insulting Wake, a god of some sort, caused everything to get worse. He is trapped and can not escape. When he reads the book, he realizes he’s in purgatory. He knows this is eternal. He can’t do it anymore. The light in the lighthouse is what seals his fate. He gives in and accepts it. All of his emotions pour out at once in the light scene and when he falls, he enters his own personal hell of being eaten alive for all of eternity which is the final scene.

I had a close interpretation to that as well but I don't think he isn't destined to be sent to hell, he is in purgatory because he hasn't absolved all of his sins as he refuses to accept responsibility for killing Winslow and him being stuck at the Lighthouse is a test to see if he eventually will.
Defoe is there to torture him as part of the test (as are all the other things you mentioned for other types of sins) and the light in the lighthouse IS actually God's divinity as Defoe keeps telling him.
But as we see in the story he doesn't decide to correctly atone for his sins and instead tries to cheat his way into heaven by murder and theft of the key.
This is why he is cast down to hell and why he ends up with the same fate as Prometheus does in the Greek fable, as Prometheus was punished for stealing fire from the Gods.
Robert tried to steal absolution from God and was Divinely punished for it.
Ye I agree. I think that the scene of him being eaten alive by seagulls is actually his physical state for the entire film

This film is more or less a take on the story of Prometheus (which is who Pattinson plays) with Dafoe as Proteus. I don't think it has a real deep meaning or message (you're meant to feel 'insane' while watching it, just like the characters do...as a lot of it doesn't really make sense)....it's more just a film for the sake of 'the art of film making', which it achieves MASTERFULLY. GREAT film.
The lobster scene is comedy gold tbh.
Also I don’t think this movie is meant to be understood, rather it’s meant to just be experienced. Like I didn’t understand shit but it was a great experience and it definitely blew my mind a bit. Also I’m in love with the shot composition and the look of this movie.
Eggers quickly and definitely became one of my favorite young directors.

This sorry reminds me of the story of Prometheus in the end where he's stuck being eaten alive for the rest if eternity.

The punishment for Prometheus was to be bound to a rock while a bird pecked out his liver every day (it growing back because he's immortal), the imagery of the final scene. The theme of transgression and forbidden knowledge runs throughout the film, specifically with the lantern, representing divine fire or knowledge - which Winslow can't comprehend.
Maybe he’s in hell?
I love how this film is about isolation and how it drives you insane. Probably not the best movie to watch if you're going through cabin fever.

some of my thoughts :
- the seagull is probably the reincarnation of Willem Dafoe's old partner (one eye, the seagulls are the reincarnation of those who died at sea)
- Willem either has a strong case of schizophrenia or just love to mess with his partner's mind to make them mad, kill them and say that their madness killed them (might be what he did to his old partner and what he's trying to do to Pattinson)
- The ending is reminiscent of 2 greek mythology tales : Icarus who flew to close to the Sun (the light in this case), burned his wings and fell down to earth (Pattinson falling down the stairs); and Prometheus who stole the fire from the Gods and brought it to mankind (Pattinson finally gaining access to the light) only to end up chained and forced to have his guts being eaten every day by an eagle (last shot of seagulls eating Pattinson's intestines)
Watched this Premiere Night in Victoria.
My theatre gave it a standing ovation.
Pattinson and Dafoe were fantastic.
Cinematography is great and deserved the oscar nomination for it. Score was haunting and the plot requires a lot of interpretation!

When I saw this a few months ago, I turned to my friend that I watched it with and said well, I don't know what the hell I just watched, but I loved it.
This movie is honesty one of the best movies I've ever seen, the monologue scene is some of the best acting ever put to screen, also the shot where Willem Dafoe is looking over Robert Pattinson character in his eyes are like the lighthouse is such a beautiful shot, this is hands down my favorite movie of all time.

I think that Willem Dafoe found a siren while working as a caretaker at the lighthouse, which explains the sexual innuendo and Greek symbolism. In exchange for having her fulfill his erotic fantasies with her visions, he keeps the company he works for sending new workers and some of them are dying because he's feeding them to the siren. He then falsifies the records and evidence and makes it look like accidents, self defense, suicides and desertion.
There is a lot of Mount Olympus, Zues, Poseidon and Prometheus symbolism throughout the movie and I believe that is because sirens originated in Greek mythology. I think Robert Pattinson is being slowly seduced and driven insane by a siren as Willem Dafoe gaslights him and helps the siren manipulate Robert Pattinson because he is in love with her.
The visions Robert Pattinson experiences are being feed to him by the siren as she slowly feeds off of his mind, body and spirit. I believe the seagulls, the sound of the foghorn, the light in the lighthouse itself and the masturbating are all metaphorical representations of the siren and the psychological, perhaps even spiritual, effect she has on them.
The seagull trying to eat the skin exposed in his torn pant leg is a foreshadowing of him being eaten like Prometheus at the end, and I believe that it symbolizes the siren consuming him. It might even be that the lighthouse doesn't actually exist, and that Robert Pattinson is a shipwrecked sailor who ended up being the victim of a siren. Willem Dafoe could simply be the persona that the siren uses to engage with Robert Pattinson during the visions she is giving him as she "eats" him.
This is probably the most clear, concise explanation of the themes/symbolism portrayed in this film that I have seen yet. Thank you!

There are of course other explanations, like the entire thing acting as an explicit class commentary (with both characters being called "Young" and "Old" in the script, and the Lighthouse representing the promise of what "Old" promises the "Young")
Or perhaps the idea of the entire thing being a fable, made up by people that tell stories around a campfire; it's why there's so much conflicting information (with "Old" dancing on his injured leg despite it being injured). A cautionary tale of not trusting men and not murdering seagulls (especially as the seagull murdered in this film actually has a missing eye, just like the former wicky whose head is in the crab-trapper).
@@michaelandrews117 I'm pretty sure that not trusting "the old" is pretty implicit when I'm saying that he is intentionally feeding "the young" new recruits to the siren.
This is one of the craziest movies I've seen in a long time. They did an incredible job on it. Both actors were amazing too.👍
This movie made me research some stuff - lighthouse optics were really heavy, and to make them easier to turn, they would be floated on a mercury pool. The vapors from the mercury would affect the people working near it. (See "mad as a hatter" for more information.) The arcs of these characters make (maybe) a bit more sense if you consider the insanity brought on by mercury poisoning from the lighthouse itself.
My reactions when watching were much the same as yours. Around the lobster speech I started laughing and didn't really stop. It was brilliant in its own weird, wonderful way, and watching you react to it was equally fun. The cinematography, direction, acting, script... brilliant. I didn't worry about interpretations so much because I could see many possible ones and didn't care which was right or wrong or anywhere in between. One of the most visceral experiences I've had watching a movie.

It's crucial for the experience to get in every bit of dialogue, but I'm also someone who generally likes watching any movie with English subtitles so I'm always getting every piece of whatever I'm watching.

The story is a crazy mashup of a real-life incident at a 19th century lighthouse, the stories of two characters from Greek mythology (Prometheus, who stole fire/knowledge from the gods, and Proteus, the sea god known as the Old Man of the Sea and the son of Poseidon), and H.P. Lovecraft elder gods.
Another possible reference to Greek mythology is the beginning, the boat ride. Could easily represent Charon's boat, taking them from the land of the living to the land of the dead.
I love the lighthouse! Someone literally walked out when I saw it in cinemas, though I should definitely rewatch on my channel!
I've seen a lot of analysis regarding this movie talking about the intersection of violence and sexuality. There's also a lot of discussion about the combination of the myths of Proteus and Prometheus, the keeper of knowledge and one who would seek to steal it. The Director/Writer, Robert Eggers, has also talked about how he doesn't want this movie to have only one interpretation. It's meant to keep you scratching your head, and includes a lot of iconography relating to a lot of different mythologies. The Lighthouse is a movie that is supposed to give you more questions than answers, many of which you may never manage to solve.
i recently rewatched The Witch, and i gotta say, The Lighthouse is such a superior movie in all aspects, but i still like The Witch more and i don't know why

Good on you for noticing the reaccuring "dog" thing, I didn't notice it until my second watch. Also, the shift of young Tom Is calling "dog watch" which adds insult to injury for him.
You didn't like The Witch?! Damn, that's actually one of my favorite contemporary horror movies, but you're not the first person I've heard that didn't like it. Regardless of that I think Robert Eggers is one of the most original, creative and artistic directors today. His movies are definitely not what's expected of the horror genre these days and I love that.
Personally I love the lighthouse and the Northman, but the witch and something like midsommar is a bit too much for me. In particular the naked old lady baby sacrifice scene was a bit too extreme imo
I saw this when it was in theatres and... the theatre was small, and there were only 5 other people in the room but I felt like I was watching it alone. I couldn't look away and I felt like I was going crazy by the end of the film. I had a massive headache too lol.
I think the lighthouse light is probably an electric light (powered by burning the coal), so when he sticks his hand into the light and screams at the end he were probably being electrocuted
I think people are blowing it out of proportion and saying it’s a metaphor for purgatory when I think it boils down to just a man burning his hand with the heat of the lighthouse light bulb lol

No, kerosene lamp, coal powers the foghorn. They even mention the lamp needing oil. That's also what they're drinking in the scene at the bottom of the lighthouse after they run out of booze

I constantly forget that that is Robert Patterson because he looks so different. So unlike anything I've seen him in
I read a theory somewhere that Thomas Wake might have been the shapeshifting sea god Proteus, and he was the Mermaid all along. This would explain why Wake and the mermaid are never in the same scene, why Howard sees him with tentacles in that one part, and why Wake seems to change forms between the real Winslow, the Mermaid, and a cackling sea god. Of course it's also possible that Thomas Howard has just lost his mind and hallucinated all that.

Great film and amazing commentary. I think the film's obscurity adds a lot to it's success among the masses and the fact that two really famous actors are playing these characters, doubles the fun.

Omg the clip at the start hahaha 😂 I definitely was beyond weirded out by that scene cause.. well yeah.. Anyway hahah, this film is really disturbing but I guess that is what makes in beautiful for me too. I really appreciate how those who worked in the film really gave us viewers an immersive experience, well, except for the “jerking” and those other scenes. I also really love how it was edited because it just increased how uncomfortable I felt while watching it. I appreciate the how the cinematography, the lighting and the set design just works together so well!!
P.s I was really excited about this video and I just have to say that it was definitely worth the wait because, not only did you entertain the heck out of me but you also gave some really great points!! If you made an analysis video for the movie, I’d really love to watch it!!

One of the things I like about this movie is that it's both open ended, but everyone seems to have an interpretation that you absolutely cannot convince them isn't the "right" one. Personally, I don't think there was a single supernatural thing at play, just good ol' fashioned pure insanity. One of my favorite movies ever.

I was in the NAVY. This is pretty much how it was living with a bunch of guys. They get to know each other, they drink, they make strong bonds, sometimes they fall for each other and start fighting cause they’re not gay cause they can’t understand their feelings.
The isolation depicted in the movie seems very appropriate now given the quarantine. I do live in a house by myself but despite that I have not seen any mermaids while I am quarantining :)

Watched this movie for he first time couple days ago with my Mom. We were both like "WTF!?!" but at the same time, just amazed with the performances both actor gave.
I know this reaction was posted 2 months ago but man ive got things to say! I absolutely love how this movie plays with your perceptions of time and character sanity its just so masterfully done in a way where you leave thinking "What the fuck just happened" but then you think further on it and it makes less sense and you like it more like wow.

I watched this movie at the Ghent Film Festival with my mother (She loved it btw, before you start thinking wtf why would you do that to her lol) and the entire theatre was packed. You really felt the energy of the room constantly switching as we started drifting along with the waters that this movie threads. I actually understood a lot more of the film then my mom, cuz this movie is based on Greek mythology. The story is based on Prometheus, who stole the fire and got punished by letting an eagle eat his liver as this movie ends the same way.

I saw this movie on the last plane trip [the last one before I could be stuck at home in Australia]. I wanted to watch it with subtitles [I wear hearing aids btw] because of the heavy monologues. I'm glad I did, but watching it on a plane screen mostly didn't show the outstanding cinematography.
I think you got The Lighthouse on a first viewing more than me [though it's largely up to interpretation], but I do think it warrants another viewing. At least this time, I will expect the freaky things about to happen. Also, Pattison and Dafoe [especially in his lobster/Neptune monologue] really acted so well in this film.
Book recomendation: Call of Cthulhu, this movie is fukin pure Lovecraft Horror!

Man, spot on with the aspect ratio analysis...
The Oscar Guild does not like flat out horror/thriller films. I was surprised that the film even managed to get nominated for best cinematography. It certainly is a shame, because in a perfect world I think it could have definitely taken home best score, best supporting actor, best cinematography, and maybe even be nominated for best costume and set design.
Saw this back in November at a film festival. Totally bonkers but really enjoyed it. Willem Dafoe was amazing in it and the style was a feast for the eyes.
Eggers out here reminding us just how potent filmmaking can be. This one can keep its head high in the company of history's greatest films, IMO.

My favourite film is the Shining and lighthouse gave me the same enjoyment, the soundtrack is similar and the feeling off the film is just pretty much the same.

My favourite film of 2019, really cool to see someone react to it. I think one of the best things about the movie is that you never quite fully understand what the hell is going on, you don't know what's supposed to be real and what's supposed to be fake, or whats actually even happening and what isn't. We get to go crazy right along with them!

Some of your observations are absolutely spot-on. The Lighthouse is a f**ked up allegorical tale; man vs man, man vs nature, man vs God, man vs the Devil, man vs himself. There's a lot of sly nods to Greek mythology in the film.
a fair bit of the imagery such as the cyclops bit and the end scene are based on works of art, greek mythology, poe, becket and weird power dynamics and a fair bit about a real incident that happened in a lighthouse in early 19th century Wales.

I use a Canon EOS M50 + 15-45MM, with a Rode VideoMicro mic and a ring light from ebay or amazon. Making videos for youtube was the best decision I ever made, would highly recommend :)
I lived on a tiny island for years. Those myths and legends, like mermaids or the Flying Dutchman, become a part of your life when there is more sea than land... And yeah, we ate lobster for breakfast, lunch, and dinner sometimes - or if not lobster, then shrimp, scallops, various fish, etc. For meat we had chicken, goat, and pork. I would have given my right arm for a good steak - the red meat we'd get there was so tough it was inedible. The lighthouse (located 5 miles out on the ocean at the reef), and especially its beam of light, was always a welcoming sight...
