How to Success a Huge Straight and Regular pottery Step-by-Step

- In this tutorial pottery video, I show you the construction of a large bonsai pot making with clay slabs. You will see the step-by-step process involved, allowing you to understand the different pottery techniques used to create this type of rectangle pot with clay slabs. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a large rectangular pot, XL ceramics tends to deform a lot during drying and firing. I will show you how to cut the clay slabs and assemble them using the clay slip technique.
The pot will dry for several weeks before firing, as the drying process is a critical factor in the success of the pottery making process. The clay slabs used are in white stoneware that will give a frost-resistant pot after firing at ±1250°C. I use the clay slab technique, which is typically used with leather-hard clay (i.e., pre-dried to be stiff enough and easier to handle). However, I am using a wetter clay, which increases the difficulty in handling, but gives me more time to work and control the deformation of the pottery.
This XL pottery is a complex project due to its size, but I will share my tips and the pottery tools that I use or have made to make this experience as simple as possible for you. You will also discover how to avoid deformations and common mistakes in constructing a pot of this size.

Thank you so much for putting in the effort to make such an incredible video 😍 I'm sure in the long run, it's definitely going to pay off producing videos like this!
Thank you very much, I also hope that it will pay off, it's really the kind of video I want to make, and I'm sure that the next videos will still improve in quality.
Fantastic glaze

The edditing of this video is amazing! In every second, from start to finish there is this huge amount of a thought proces present. It was really fun to watch and I learned something new.
Thank you
Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked it and that you noticed the editing work! It took me a lot longer than making the pot, but that's really the type of video I'm aiming for on the channel now.
Everything shown here is super valuable info for me now. From handling tips to tools. For the moment I am only sculpting small pots. Slab building a pot will be my next step. Thanks for this!
Thank you 😄🙏
If you are making pots with slabs, start with small models, it's difficult to make rectangles that don't twist.
very impressive and what an amazing pot
Very clever informative video
Thank you, I try to be as informative as possible trying to be as less boring as possible, glad you liked it
Quality of edit is AMAZING!!! Tnx for video we learned a lot!!! Regards, from Serbia.

You are an amazing teacher and a very inspirational presenter. I really have an urge to make some ceramics now.😄
Great, so I achieved my goal! 😄

Love this thank you for sharing
Great video!!! Excellent information thank you!
Thanks for watching 😉 🙏
Impressive work, beautiful and elegant. I know what I would put in there if I had it here... Not a bonsai, but an European orchid called Oprhys. A bee orchid from southern Europe (e.g. Ophrys speculum), in moss and a few crocus biflorum bulbs, with some beautiful river rocks. *Just dreaming.*
Thank you very much, and if my work makes you dream, that's even better!
The only issue I have with the inner wall is when the roots grow under the lip of the pot. It will be hard to take the tree out of the pot….. ❤❤❤
Extasiado!!
🔥🔥🔥
fantastico
Thanks Greg for your videos! I learn a lot from you! Those little tricks mean so much to me!
You're welcome, if i was helpful then I reached my goal! 😁
Beautiful editing (and pot, of course)...4 hands are better than two. Love the glaze too.
Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video editing, it was much longer than making the pot! :D
Tres bien! Bon, tres bon. Merci Greg, merci! And the result of that glaze at the very end... c'est magnifique! You're an inspiration
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Great to see a full insight into what you put in to produce fantastic pots. Merci beaucoup
Thank you 😄🙏
Really great video Merci Greg! Thank you for sharing your work it is without doubt, extremely helpful to see your tips and techniques. You're always so neat and it is a beautiful Pot. 🙏
Thank you very much Rowena 😄🙏
Amazing video. Thank you for share your knowledge and experience. I'm from a small country and your video encourages me to go ahead with bonsai pottery.
Thank you very much 👍
Merci beaucoup 😋
👏👏👏👏
It's very impressive. I want 2 try but where i find the raw materials. I want to know how can you dry it.
Excellent work with thorough instructions. Your pots look amazing! Also love those glazes. I'm new to working with clay but have working with bonsai trees for more than 30 years. Thought it was time to give pot making a go now that I'm retired and have more time on my hands. I'm thinking it depends on the size of the pot but generally how thick are your slabs?
Thank you so much. Good luck in your learning.
Usually my slabs are between 8 and 10 mm.
Very good video on making a bonsai pot. Really like the sub-texts on steps, versus constant babble in between steps. Now about the few tools used: hand made? Or procured from a source?
Thank you. Most of the tools you see in my recent videos are homemade tools. You can find some of them on my site ;)
www.greg-ceramics.com/?page=tool
Where can we buy good pottery tools like the wire cutter? Thank. You. ❤❤❤
❤❤❤
Sorry should have kept rolling tape, i have my answer
Thank you for the video. Could you tell us the slab thickness?
thank you, Usually it's about 8-10 mm
Looks like a cone 6 firing. DO not put "big,/flat"in the bottom of the kiln- will warp and/or crack. Wondering why the middle does not sag in firing. I would put a scrap across the bottom, same height as feet but not attached, i.e. like a "post", to keep it from sagging.
This is a cone 8 firing. Normally, if your temperature is uniform, firing is identical everywhere in the kiln. I don't have any more breakage at the top than at the bottom of the kiln.
Maybe your bottom coils are a little worn out ?
Yes, the little extra feet are a good idea, I sometimes also do this on certain large pots which risk deforming.
Really tidy work as usual. I was thinking of getting those mud tool soft ribs. Which size do you find most useful? Many thanks
Thank you very much, I use several quite often, but I will say that the most useful (for me) are the smaller ones in red and yellow (the most flexible)
A wonderful and entertaining video! New subbie🙏🏼 thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us freely🎉 QUESTION: What is the glaze you used?😮 It is gorgeous! ❤
Thanks.
I make my own glaze, all are home recipe ;)
@@Greg-ceramics aw-dratz! 😕
I was hopeful it was either published or commercial 😏 I'll hit the drawing board...
Or at least glazy and see if I have all the parts for something similar 🤔 🤷🏼♀️ ☺️
I'm loving your great results from clever "putter-togethering"😉 I am also being drawn to that part of this new journey I stumbled across. It's quite fascinating.
Art 'On
Amazing work!
Whats in the pot when you flip it over on the rim in order to mount the feet?
Thank you very much.
It's just a board with pieces of clay, you can see the process in one of my previous videos. czcams.com/video/6XY23Vnzn7o/video.html
This might be the best video I have seen on youtube. Thank you so MUCH! I will be making slab pots tonight!!!!
Thank you very much 👍
slabs look almost leather hard, do you let them sit for a day or two?
about 2 hours
That's simply amazing.
Why not use a box frame?
It could be a solution if I always made the same pots in large quantities, but in that case I might as well use a mold. I don't do mass production, I like to do different things and be creative. The goal of my videos is to learn how to make all types of pot shapes manually. 😉
