check out l-dis, 1943 kai, star parodier, ginga fukei densetsu sapphire, spriggan '91, super raiden, gates of thunder and lords of thunder. they are really awesome. also worth playing: galaga 88 (90), cyber core, nexr, override, psycho chaser, tatsujin and kyokyoku tiger. if you own a super grafx, give aldynes a try.
TheVerytex Was gonna mention Galaga 88 (and those types of shooters)! And I really NEED a Super Grafx even though there are hardly any games for it.
Carlos Rodela yea. i love the super grafx so much. i also like the design. 1941 and ghouls n ghosts are great ports. i got mine from an ebay seller from china. bought it eight years ago. hope you'll find one for a good price and good condition in the future. sgx rocks!! great video btw.
TheVerytex I also found a PC-FX that I NEED to buy. It had some crazy CD based fighting game that was all anime. Have you seen it?
The TG 16 U.S set is, in my opinion, the most collectible "mainstream" set out there. With only a little over 90 games, if you take out Magical Chase it's a fairly obtainable collection goal.
The intro with the mini-console was adorable.
Thanks for posting these vids. I purchased this system back in 91 and still have it. Blazing lasers and R-Type were two of my favorite games. I'm hooking this system back up tomorrow!
haha "scary-em up" I like it. Awesome video guys, always look forward to Fridays!
Metal Jesus, already saw all your videos, superb quality. In my opinion, the youtube channel that better mix real GAMER perspective with CASUAL entertainment. Cheers from Brasil!
love your videos MJR!
this one was great. I love shooters like these and always wanted a turbografx when i was a kid
I would have loved to see Aero Blasters and Gates of Thunder featured, but the games features are also very solid titles!
Thanks for the list guys! I'm going to download these on my Wii today.
Woohoo!!! Huge fan of the Soldier series. TurboGrafx 16 is such a shmup powerhouse.
Soldier series = awesome
I don't know a whole lot about which console broke what grounds and engines/mechanics type stuff but to the casual eye a lot of these games look amazing. So colorful and crisp. Well done guys!
I love the way Carlos reacts when you says that you never played the Star Soldier series :)
Good to see another upload metaljesus!
Would love to see you do a top 10 MMO for PC video some time cheers dude!
I didn't know it was also a movie but I remember reading EGM back in the day and learning that Blazing Lazers was called Gunhed in Japan. Editor Ed Semrad also called it his favorite console shooter and he also said Rondo of Blood on the PC Engine Super CD was the best Castlevania on console despite Bloodlines on the Genesis and Castlevania IV on the snes. Great nostalgic memories :)
i remember getting the lords of thunder vhs tape promo in the mail back in '93. good times.
Omg...Yes!!!...I just started to watch this...you are on pause...I love my PCE and all its shmups.....that's why I send you the cube back in the days!
Aeroblaters was what I loved the most. even over Rtype. had great music too. I never did beat it tho, gonna hafta revisit it now.
You were true to your word Jesus, Ive been waiting for this one, Bless you my child!
I'm not a subscriber, but I love these videos. Anytime I'm looking for a new retro game, I hit CZcams and unintentionally find myself on your channel. Thanks for introducing me to new games. \m/
Nice seeing some more TG16 love. Sidearms and Aero Blasters are amazing as well.
Thanks for another great video, Shmups are my favorite games! I'd love to see another video like this featuring shmups on the Saturn, although I know you've made a few Saturn videos already :3
The turbografx 16 has many amazing shooters. Great video!
Awesome video as always metal jesus
Blazing Lasers is my favorite shooter of all-time, and also got very high marks in the December, 1989 issue of EGM. In the press at the time, it was pretty well-known that it was based on Gunhed. Always wanted to see that movie translated. :)
Zap! I always thought the Games Gunhed and Gunhed 2 on PSX were based upon that movie.
Turrican4D Lol yeah but it's nothing like movie. The game is set in space, while the movie takes place on Earth in a base.
Blazing Blazers is a game I played the most on my TG-16 as a kid. I still go back to it.
Dragon Spirit, Aero Blasters, and of course...Sidearms! Three great shmups that all got US TG16 releases and are somewhat affordable.Love the channel man! Great episode on my favorite genre for one of the best systems.
I have to try get myself one of these consoles they do look freaking cool, it's amazing how many consoles there are out there, I've discovered most of them through these videos so thanks for that
I know im late on this but that was the first intro where i saw the super small atari 2600. That was pretty awesome man. Love how you always change up the intro, i feel like im watching the couch intro to simpsons, lol
I love this channel :) Great Job !
Excellent! Air Zonk right out the gate! Happy to see it here on the list!
I know, I thought i'd start with one of my favs. Could play that game any day of the week. Super simple to get into, and then an hour is gone by like that.
Dude Metal Jesus,I think Turbo was made for you! SHOOTERS left and right, bro!!!
Man, I'm starting my PC Engine/Turbografx-16 collection and I want to thank you for all the videos showing some great games to hunt down.
Thank you, Metal Jesus. You rock!
Glad we could help!
Carlos Rodela And THANK YOU Carlos (oh my God, sorry let you out of my speech). :)
Rodrigo Horta Np. Glad we could help out!
Rodrigo Horta Thank you? Get ready to part with A LOT of money. I don't know if I'd be thanking him or get pissed at him. lol. In all seriousness that is the only reason I've stayed away from this system.. I know it would be great , but the cost to collect for it.....
LittleBigKid707b Well I found some lots of PC Engine games here in Brazil. The guy was selling some boxes with random hu cards, not the entire collection in one box. So, considering I couldn't play all the games before other potential buyers show up, I chose a box with 32 games. It included "Street Fighter 2", "Silent Debuggers", "Neutopia" 1 & 2, that tennis game I forgot the name, R-Type and so on. The guy said they usually ask for the Bomberman 94, Dracula X, OutRun, Fatal Fury and Bonk, but he sold them a time ago.
Do you know how much I payed? R$ 350, which is around U$ 120. For 32 games, just 6 of them without the case, I think it was a hell of a buy. The good thing is I knew what I was doing. Before those videos, I've never heard about Neutopia, Silent Debuggers... and that tennis game. Knowing what to look after helps.
This has become my favorite gaming channel.
Drinking game:
Take a zip everytime metal Jesus says "huh"
You'll end up in the hospital though
I'm a huge r-type fan . And the bit or companion is called the force :). Indestructible and can kill almost anything.
Great video.
great vid!! enjoyed it...i'm waiting in excitement for the part3 video with Reggie!! :)
I love the fact that you keep using the intro with the tiny 2600 and didn't just use it as a one of for the 3D printer episode, love that tiny fucker.
Fantastic selection. Great video! And Carlos is cool!
Thank ya! You're cool too. Cool x 2
Gate of thunder, Lords of thunder, Sapphire, dead moon, aero blaster, ....
The list goes on and on.
I was going to mention Aero Blaster..I remember thinking the graphics (at the time) were 'ridiculous'!
The best co host mjr ever had.
hi praise. thank you kindly. kinsey aint too shabby either. as in she's awesome!
I think Reggie could be my favourite!
What about drunken master paul?!?!
So Great guys! Thanks for the info
Enjoyed this vid! Thx!
Glad to see Ordyne on the list! I love that game!! I remember playing 2 players with my best friend growing up. You tip toed into the PC Engine and only scratched the surface. So many amazing shooters that you may not have played. I know this isn't a top 10, but some of the games in this list would probably drop way down after you try more of the shooters that came out for the PC Engine.
Great video I just got a turbo grafx and was wondering what good shooters there are! Prefects
Surprised you’ve never done a turbografx 16 buying guide. Would love to see one in the future!
I'd love to see a part 2 (I'd personally love to see Galaga '88 included since it's my favorite game of all time)
Haha that intro was hilarious!
Great video, that is one of the few systems that I don't own...now I want one.
Cool video I really like this friend of yours!
What!! No Side Arms??!! That was one of the best shooters in the TG16. I was so looking fwd to seeing that on this list. MJ, please do mention this game on a later video. It was an arcade masterpiece that made it to the TG16. Thanks guys, and thumbs up.
Oh, there's also Gate of Thunder. It is a horizontal shooter, with a killer '80s/'90s heavy metal soundtrack I feel you would really dig, Metal Jesus
Thinking of doing a TG-16 vid based on the CD games OR should we do one based on the PC-Engine?
YES !!!! BOTH ....
Sweet! I thought I knew all there was to know about TG16, then I see Coryoon. Never heard of that one. Gotta find it.
Coryoon is an import / pc engine, but you can find the rom out there to try it first. Super fun - although kinda confusing with all the fruits.
I was really expecting this to be TurboGrafx themed shots of alcohol... It's definitely a Friday.
***** BAWHAHAHA! I had to read your comment TWICE to figure out the joke..and then I cracked up! :)
That Intro Rocks
The guest was great. Thanks mjr.
the games that asked if you wanted manual or auto power ups that you mentioned at the end is parodius i believe. i love me some shooters.
I picked up a Turbografx 16 mini. Best shooter I played was Lords of Thunder. One of the CD games but the soundtrack absolutely rocks with heavy metal style. Different ships with firing styles. PC Engine had some great ones too like Gradius II.
Great video, really enjoyed it and agree with the games hr brought up! One cool addition to these reviews would be if they are beat able or if the people reviewing them have beaten them(w/o cheats) BC in shooters I find myself not able to beat the final levels without putting 4months of my life into a final level. I know the balanced/unbalanced talk eludes to this but doesn't fully answer my wonders. Great videos anyway though. I love the TG-16 now BC of shooters and your videos!
R-Type on the PC Engine actually came on two Hucards and I could only find the first. Amazing conversion though. I also liked Dragon Spirit, if anyone remembers that one. Can't believe you didn't mention that Salamander/Lifeforce scrolls vertically as well as sideways though!
Hah, that new intro. Very, very nice.
Nice to see good vibes thrown at the TG-16! Great system that had a lot of strange titles for it. We need another gamecube video, how about one that focuses on racing games? The cube had really great versions go burnout 1-2, need for speed, plus lots of arcade style futuristic racers F-Zero!
Wow! I am really going to try to find one of these now. Those games look great.
Let us know if you found some. I got BACK into shooters from working on this episode!
They are super awesome and loads of fun
Turbografx is the KING of shoot em ups!
How could you forget Fantasy Zone and Raiden :)
Oh, and special mention to Kyukyoku Tiger too, which is awesome.
He also forgot Dragon Spirit
I've never played a Turbo Grafx 16, but they look really interesting. I might have to pick one up in the future.
Nice video :)
Nice video and I agree with your list. These games are great.
Thanks! There are sooooooo many more. So please drop knowledge on us on other ones that are rad.
This is a great list, but I think honorable mention should go to Terra Cresta 2. A fantastic shooter with a lot to offer, including a fantastic soundtrack, customizable multi-ship setup, and tight responsive controls.
A lot of awesome games guys, and the turbo grafx 16 definitely did a good job with the amount of shooters they offered for that system in North America and Japan. I'm particularly fond of Air Buster on the Turbo Grafx 16 even though its balls hard.
Hey MJR! Still binging your channel. SO AWESOME! I just scored a 32” sony trinitron at a yard sale for $5 just for retro gaming and it’s a BEAST! Weighs 165 lbs. I just realized in this video that your TV changed from the boob tube flat screen to a normal-ish flat screen. Can you still play retro light gun games on that tv and get the 4:3 aspect ratio that’s desired for retro games? Thanks
About the Star Soldier series, there are 4 games on the Turbografx 16, (which btw are the 4 bests on the entire series) and they are, in order of release: Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier, Soldier Blade and Star Parodier.
Star Parodier is kinda like Hudson's take on Parodius on the PC engine CD but with the Star Soldier series, I personally find it to be WAY better than Parodius, but that's because I don't like the Gradius series very much, but I sure LOVE the Star Soldier series ;3
Also, I think Soldier Blade is the best shmup ever... It's far up there in my favourite games of all time!
So if you guys are open to import cd's there's a couple of Darius games that are pretty great, Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire is amazing but it requires an arcade card and is über expensive, R-Type Complete is arguably better than its hucard/s counterparts, and as others have mentioned here Star Parodier is to the Hudson Soldier series what Parodius is to Gradius. Domestic CDs to check out would certainly be Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder (Jason you'll flip over the music in those), and there is a CD pseudo-sequal of Air Zonk, but it doesn't have parallaxing backgrounds and its got a weird rockabilly soundtrack. As always guys, great video and huge thanks!
hey theres that diablo box set I gave ya sitting on the back shelf yay! lol
Parodius is just the best. Played it on the SNES like million times.
The TurboGrafx/PC Engine had some absolutely incredible SHMUP’s!
Blazing Lazers was bundled with most of the PAL Turbografx (no 16 in the EU). Sadly, the Turbo was only officially released in Spain (and maybe Germany, dunno), as a test market. You can buy a brand new PAL Turbos, which can play american Turbochips, for like 100€, because tons of ready-to-release consoles were warehoused for years and recently discovered. And they come with brand new Blazinf Lazers inside.
Carlos, you totally said, "mom come and see this!" own that shiz.
I think I might have! #owningit
Carlos Rodela I used to brag to my mom about the "awesome graphics".....she wasn't too impressed :'(
yeah, they didn't get it! we were heading towards a graphical revoution! I first said that to be cheesy .. but as I was writing it realized it WAS TRUE!
Turrican4D go play outside!
Cotton, Spriggan, Sidearms Lords of Thunder and Gate of Thunder.
I don't think they were including CD games.
***** Sidearms was also on the Hu card
+sirpurr28 Hellfire S maybe as well?
+ImTheYowie That is also a awesome game.
Hey Mir can u put a link to the video game break podcast please ??? Thanks great episode, turbo grafix was one of the best sleeper consoles out there.
One good thing is that every time these youtubers bring awareness to these retro systems/games, the prices go up up and up!
Final zone is a masterwork and has awesome music.
i play Parodius on the SNES all the time. love it
Ughh, I really need a turbografx! I've actually never even played one before :O
But anyway, nice list! Carlos and Metal Jesus work well together!
Thank ya! We have fun every time we make a vid.
It definitely shows!
i love final soldier and the raiden port is great too...
Carlos is a really radical dude!
You're really radical for saying that! Thanks!
Love the tiny 2600 in the intro.
Metal Jesus Rocks yo!
Blazing Lazers is freaking amazing! I wish I could afford more TG-16 games!
I'm one of those weird people who likes games that are physically demanding. It makes it memorable. Like the first UFC Undisputed where you had to circle the stick or mash the buttons on submissions and reversals. Me and my friend had some wars where we could barely feel our hands afterwards. Maybe it's because I'm a workout dude.
mjr do you consider the tg16 an under rated system? Never had this one as a kid didn't know to many friends who had this system, only one as a matter of fact. Just wondering what your thoughts of the tg16 as a hole in the video game market at the time.
Praise Metal Jesus.
the only person i ever met that had a turbografx-16 was named carlos... he let me borrow it for a week. it was awesome.
Download!!, possibly the best slept on shooter of all the ages.
That was just on the outside of my top 10 list! It was like 11 or 12. Dig it
Looking back at this in 2020, it makes me think that there were a lot more contributors in the early days that we just don’t see anymore!! 😔 how come?
I would definitely be into collecting for the Turbo GrafX if I could find the system for sale !
How did Aeroblasters and Sidearms not make the list? Both awesome games, Aeroblasters had the advantage of two player co-op. My buddy and me spent so many hours playing that one !!!
Override. FUN vertical shmup; only released for the PC engine, sadly, but still worth a look!
i like your new intro whit the mini atari 2600 so cool so i wonder you go to cover the flash carts everdrive like the turbo everdrive for this system ad others or not??
Blazing lasers reminds me of a game i played in an arcade once.
in case anyone haven't brought it up yet, I want bring up Magical Chase. It's tough to find and when you do, it's hella expensive.
A gameboy color version was released, and is now just as rare as well as pricy.
Hey, there isno dancing Metal Jesus at the end of the video!!!
