    For folks who aren't familiar with TG-16, you can think of Dungeon Explorer as five-player Gauntlet with heavier ARPG elements (exploration of distinct towns, dungeons, bosses) thrown in for good measure. It is truly a gem, with outstanding PSG tunes (every song is great)...and in STEREO...it was quite a nice thing to experience in 1989. I should add that all of the games featured in this video have great tunes. Sorry, comrades, but the Genesis/MD in 1989 did not have as many stellar-sounding soundtracks as it should have (when compared to TG-16/PCE PSG offerings). I could babble forever, but I'll stop....

      Yeh I agree!!!!! In Australia it was pretty much non existent hey. Obviously some people had it probably more foreigners and collectors? Like I remember this Japanese m8 I had in primary school and he had the metal Voltron which here in Australia we mainly had the plastic one. Sorry lol random thought. I love the PC Engine now! Playing the shit out of it!

    The Turbo Booster simply added the ability to have AV composite output, since the console only had RF output by default. The Turbo Booster Plus added that as well as the ability to add save points to most (not all) Turbografx games. The bottom half of the CD unit basically doubles as a Turbo Booster plus. :)

    8:40 The turbo booster did not give the TG16 more ram. It allowed for Composite output only. The Turbobooster plus did the same but allowed you to save games, pretty sure it didn't give the system any additional ram for games.

      @emmettturner9452 Před 3 lety

      The Turbo Booster Plus did add some battery-backed SRAM.
      It wasn’t used as work RAM but it was RAM. It was used as save/backup RAM for saving game progress, high scores, passwords, etc. SRAM used for the same purpose in cartridge games is often also used as extra work RAM, which is why the PC Engine HuCard version of Populous has SRAM in a thick “ROMRAM” HuCard even though it has no battery (uses it as work RAM). The ROMRAM HuCard design Populous uses was intended for battery-backed games too and has a spot for a battery though the only card to ever use it with a battery wasn’t a game: Tennokoe Bank Card. The Bank card gives you extra storage banks for copying game saves from Turbo Booster Plus, Interface Unit, Turbo-CD, Backup Booster, Duo, etc. It was basically one of the first memory cards ever made, though Neo Geo AES/MVS also had one. Neo Geo launched after PC Engine but probably before Tennokoe Bank Card.

    The CD is also interesting in that it's the only console add-on that was so successful it eventually replaced the original medium. Newer games switched completely from HuCards to CDs.
    Oh, and the Turbo Booster ONLY added AV out. The Turbo Booster Plus had the AV out as well as memory for saved games, but not extra RAM for games to use. The CD add-on also had AV out and memory.
    Extra RAM needed for certain Super CD games was available through the Super System Card (already included in the Turbo Duo hardware). Two versions of a final card with even more RAM came out later for Arcade CD games, the Arcade Card Pro (for the CD add-on) and the Arcade Card Duo (for the Duo).

    Cadash was one of my faves, and had two more characters than the Genesis version, the ninja and the priestess. Dragon Curse, I believe it was called, the 3rd entry in the Wonder Boy saga, was also a blast and unlike anything I had played at the time. You already covered Ninja Spirit, which I had to download on the Wii VC to own again (sold my TG-16 back-inna-day for SOME dumbass reason). Splatterhouse was one I used to impress my friends what with all the gore and voice effects (cheesy now but it was bombtastic back in the day). I also really enjoyed the sports games and had a ton of em, volleyball, baseball, football, basketball, and hockey.

    The turbo booster didn't add ram, it added composite video output. The turbobooster plus added composite and the ability to save some games. It was a despicable cash grab by NEC who assumed their console would steamroll the American gaming market the way the PC-Engine did in Japan.

    • @DennisForstner
      @DennisForstner Před 8 lety +2

      it's weird they didn't include composite for the TG16 out of the box considering the PC Engine is composite compatible without any accessories.

    • @tetsujin_144
      @tetsujin_144 Před 6 lety

      Well, all versions of the hardware with the expansion connector do provide composite video there, but the original PC Engine, like the Turbografx, didn't provide a dedicated composite port.
      I'm not really sure what's required to use the composite from the expansion port - I use my system with a home-brew cable that just connects the expansion port pins directly to the A/V cables. I'm not sure if it's really correct to just use those signals as-is or if they ought to be amplified and put through decoupling capacitors.
      So it really is a corner-cutting thing - at most we're talking a handful of transistors, resistors, and capacitors to get composite out of a PC Engine. (but they did it in Japan, too - which kind of makes sense since the PC Engine was designed to go against the Famicom - which also didn't have composite. Kinda stinks...)
      It's hard to imagine a scenario where the Turbo could have really been a success in the US. The NES was doing quite well in 1987-1989 (between the release of the original PC Engine and the Turbo) and the PCE really didn't have the software library to compete, especially with Nintendo's exclusivity lock-in deals.

    My uncle had this system when my brother, my cousin, and I were growing up an no one ever knew what I was talking about when I would mention the Turbo Grafx 16 or even heard of it before. I loved this system and the fact that we could only play it for 1-2 weeks out of the year, because he lived in NC and we were in PA, made it so much better being that it was so mysterious to us. He only had a couple games for it but we were all about that Ninja game, Bonk, SplatterHouse, and that devil pin ball game. I’m definitely missing some but it’s great to see people talking about a system we loved as kids mostly because at the time we felt like we were the only 4 people in the world that knew about it. I would love to see some more videos on the Trubo Grafx 16. Especially the cd drive and it’s games because I never remember knowing about a cd drive attachment

      And Famicom Wars-the precursor to Advance Wars-predates Nectaris 1/Military Madness by a year.
      I wonder how much further back this goes (while remaining so closely analogous, I mean; obviously the roots of the turn-based strategy genre go back much further than '88, but these games are incredibly similar).

  • @hypercynic
    @hypercynic Před 8 lety

    Fun fact, when you guys mentioned Military Madness being like "Advance Wars" long before it came out, Advance Wars actually came out long after it's original version called Famicom Wars. There were actually 6 versions of the game before it finally came out in North America for us to enjoy.
    They had a few versions for Game Boy and Game Boy Color and they had the original Famicom Wars for, of course, Famicom. Another cool fact is the Super Famicom version called Super Famicom Wars was exclusive to the Satellaview which, not sure if you're aware, but it was an add-on that attached to the bottom of the SFC like the CD add-on would have, had it been released. There were a bunch of really cool game "DLCs" that were on Satellaview. One of the best being the remake of the original Legend of Zelda; but in 16-bit graphics. You could actually make an avatar that you would play with so it was like YOU were Link. And the "DLC" part came in where they had numerous different maps for download to play. They had this for Excitebike which was played with Mario characters, F-Zero which had 3 or 4 full grand prix's for download, and various other games.
    I'm a huge fan of the SFC and imports in general, so I tend to be fairly knowledgeable with a lot of the exclusive Japanese stuff :)

    The Turbo Booster didn't give you more ram... It was more like a battery back up... It made you able to save some games and gave you AV output with stereo sound... You only got more ram with the Turbo CD
    And the PC engine didn't come out a little bit after the Famicom, it was a whole 4 years later! And it only had 1 8bit CPU but 2 16bit GPUs, so it was like an 8 bit console with 16 bit graphics... And you forgot to mention that the PC engine outsold both the Famicom and the Mega Drive in Japan and dominated the market until the Super Famicom came out!

    • @1ex1uger-prank-calls
      @1ex1uger-prank-calls Před 10 lety +2

      I was skeptical about the Turbo Booster adding more RAM to the system, as I've never heard of any ways to bump up the console's RAM count without going the CD-ROM route. Speaking of the CD-ROM attachment, is it possible to use it while using the Turbo Booster, or do you have to choose between using one and the other?

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 Před 10 lety +2

    • @StudioMudprints
      @StudioMudprints Před 10 lety +1

      1ex1uger One or the other, but the CD-ROM attachment had both built-in memory and AV out, so both aren't required for the same results.

    • @joolsstoo3085
      @joolsstoo3085 Před 10 lety +2

      1ex1uger There actually is a way to add ram to the Turbo Grafx (kinda). The CD add on came with a card you had to put into the turbo chip slot to make it run. It had 64k of ram, and the CD player dumped data from the disc to that card so the games could be played. The Turbo Duo came out as an all in one unit but upgraded to with 256k of ram, so they released a new system card for the cd add on called the super system card 3.0 to match the Duo's memory. For a little more trivia the Turbo Duo was the first north american stand alone CD based console to have built in memory for saving games, not the Saturn or 3D0. The Duo is my retro system of choice.

    • @Michirin9801
      @Michirin9801 Před 10 lety

      Jools Stoo Don't forget about the Japan-only Arcade Card with 16 MEGA POWER of ram! (16mbit / 2mb) With it the PC engine CD could wipe the floor with the Sega CD and even the Super Nintendo and produce arcade-quality games that competed with the Neo Geo!
      It even got some amazing early Neo Geo ports by Hudson Soft!
      (Actually, the Super Nintendo could still compete with the Neo Geo... Look up Gundam Wing Endless Duel for a good example of how)

    Actually, the original, first-gen TurboBooster allowed for composite video-connection and stereo sound (which greatly "boosted" the image-quality through the TV), but the TurboBooster Plus finally allowed for the saving of high scores and certain game-data (such as automatic password save-states, which were pretty handy).
    Also, both the PC Engine and the TurboGrafx 16 had a "true" 16-bit graphics processor and an 8-bit memory processor (Carlos mentions that both were 8-bit in the video, which is incorrect).

    I got my boxed TG-16 from a place called Floppy Joe's in Plano Texas @1990. I only paid $20 for it, and later got a boxed Turbo-Booster for the same price from there. My collection for the console is pretty small though, with titles like Military Madness, Alien Crush, KLAX, Galaga-90, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, The Legendary Axe, Dungeon Explorer and Side Arms.

      In Connecticut we had TurboGrafx. However, it was expensive. At that time I was starting to game on the PC. I also spent all of my time working on my 1970 VW bug. Both of those were expensive hobbies. I am back to the console now. I got sick of swapping hardware just so I could play a game in full resolution on the PC. in retrospect I should've bought the TurboGrafx. As expensive as it was, it was nowhere as expensive as getting a PC.

      Not even Europe's biggest retrogame online store sells it.

    My siblings & I got Turbo Graphics when it first came out in the U.S. or soon after it did & we loved it! It blew Nintendo away in our minds & The Bonks games are the best platformers of all time. It’s really too bad more ppl don’t know about it.
    I also absolutely loved Dungeon Explorer. The graphics for 99% of the games blew us away.
    All of our friends would love coming over and playing because we were the only ones that had it. Up until recently I never knew anyone with a Turbo Graphics lol.
    I still have my Turbo Graphics and most of my games. It’s really too bad Turbo Graphics wasn’t able to survive the console wars because they were way ahead of everyone!

    Just a correction, the TG-16 was not 2 8 bit chips. It had an 8bit cpu clocked at 7.5 MHz (2x the speed of the snes cpu), plus dual 16 bit graphics chips. The Tg16 could display 482 simultaneous colors on screen at once, while the genesis could display 51at a time and snes 256 at a time (snes did have way more to choose from though).

    WHAT? You could have said "Guantlet with Adventure/RPG features" and you've nailed it. By the way, Dungeon Explorer 2 (Super CD game) was one of the finest on the system!
    Another thing, the "Advance Wars" series was created before Military Madness. It was called FAMICOM WARS. Although is true that this came first outside Japan, and it's an awesome game nonetheless.

  • @ealswytheangelicrealms

    Thanks for the video with all the information on the system. I bought a base system back in the 90’s and a few games. Later in the 90’s when the company went out of business a local game store was selling base turbo graft systems for $5 and games for $1. I bought 4 used base systems and a lot of the games. NEC Technologies was 20 minutes from where I lived and I used to go there and play games before they were released in return for filling out a survey giving an opinion about the game I played. . One time they even gave me my favorite game for the system, Neutopia II. I still have the game factory sealed in the box. They also gave me some promotional material which consisted of 5 by 7 inch cards which had the artwork of the box of the game and a written description of the game. I still have these cards too. It is interesting to find out now that some of the games are worth over $100 now because I remember seeing those turbo graft game cards for $1 in used game bins at small game stores in the 90’s. Back then you could also buy a converter that attached to the Turbo Grafx that played PC Engine games. I bought a lot of those too for $1 back in the late 90’s at small game stores with used games...

    TurboGrafx was such an awesome name for a console, so much better than "Wii" IMO. Just imagine how awesome it would have been had they could have named the "Wii U" the "Turbo Nintendo". Well, it would at least be more creative than naming microsoft's THIRD xbox the "Xbox One". :P .... I would say "Turbo Box", but I think that may sound too much like a sex joke.
