  • Here are 10 lesser known fun games that should be in every Nintendo NES game collectors library! w/ John Riggs
    I have to say this is one of the most fun videos I have made. John & I were tired after a day of PAX and we are just sillier and looser than normal. It made for some funny conversation and teasing! I hope you guys enjoy it!

    Kickle Cubicle brings back memories of going to the dentist when I was a little kid. They had an NES hooked up in the waiting room, and that was one of the games they had there. I would always try to see how far I could get before I was called in to my appointment...and I remember the chair they had for you to sit on while you were playing was a giant tooth.

      +John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I don't know whether it is a "Hidden Gem", but I never see Shadow of the Ninja mentioned. It's an action game similar to Ninja Gaiden, but not as difficult, developed by Natsume. The Game Boy port was slightly changed and became the official Ninja Gaiden for GB

    • @eric4133
      @eric4133 Před 8 lety +1

      +John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Not sure how hidden these are, but some that are not as well know.
      Heavy Barrel: Arcade top down shooter kind of like the top down sections of Super C. This is a two player game so it was always a fun one to play with a friend when I was a kid. Game is also extremely cheap to buy.
      Iron Tank: Kind of reminds me of a top down shooter, only in a tank. Can collect power-ups and run over guys which is one of the best things ever. Also an extremely in-expensive game.
      Here's some games I've heard of more recently but never knew of when I was young:
      Mighty Final Fight: Basically Final Fight on NES with the art style more like River City Ransom. Really great game and one I don't actually own because it is very expensive, hopefully one day I can get it but worth checking out.
      Whomp'Em: Similar game to Megaman. Great platformer and not horribly priced for anyone looking to collect it.
      Shatterhand: This game is very similar to the Batman NES game. Another one that's not horribly expensive.
      Not sure if any of these are considered as hidden. Of the people I know, they are games not so well known.

    • @SlyBeast
      @SlyBeast Před 8 lety +1

      +John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I have 2 for you: Faxanadu and Flying Warriors. Faxanadu is a side scrolling action RPG with a flawless soundtrack. I wanted a sequel to that game so bad that I mailed $40 cash to the developer's address in the instruction manual, you know, to cover my copy, right? Needless to say, I never got a sequel, and no matter how much money I make in my life, I'll always be $40 poorer because of that. My friends still laugh about that to this day. Flying Warriors is a localized version of one of the games in the Japanese Hiryu no Ken series. Again, great game with no sequel, at least not here in the U.S. When I got older and discovered emulation, I found out that there was indeed an NES sequel in Japan. Still waiting for that one to be translated... Anyway, 2 greats there that you should definitely check out if you haven't. Even complete in box, these 2 are cheap.

    I can't believe that the massive glitch in Rescue the Embassy Mission wasn't mentioned. Maybe it isn't in all copies. When you beat the game you get a newspaper talking about your adventure. But the game ending is swapped. If you win, you get the lose newspaper, but if you lose you get the winning one.

    I would recommend Clash at Demonhead. It's an action-adventure platformer. My favorite thing about the game is the fact that it's an open sort of world, since you can choose which area you want to go to on an overworld map. This game makes you explore and I love that. There are also shops and power ups. Overall it's a really fun game!

    This "Rescue the embassy mission" game is SO impressive! it has some visual effects that I have no idea how they made! (And that's because I've studied how retro 8 and 16 bit graphics work) Like the lights and the sniper aim, it's incredible! Keep in mind that the system could only show 25 colours on-screen and only had a single BG layer... With that in mind I'm still trying to wrap my head around how did they do those visual effects...

    • @racerxgundam
      @racerxgundam Před 8 lety

      +Ruko Michiharu i had that game as a kid....and i'll take your word on its technical aspects, i remember being psyched myself when i first fired it up. The actual game itself was terrible....u literally saw everything the game had to offer in minutes. I felt ripped off then, and i feel that it in no way qualifies as a "hidden gem" on the nes. i maybe would recommend peeps to watch a quickie letsplay of it if they were so inclined...but paying anything more than 50 cents to me would be getting scammed!
      north and south, wurms, and cowboy kid were straight fire picks in my book.
      Wurms cover art for japan is great. Its usa variant, so terribly cheesy it hits glorious levels. Worth it for that alone.

    Hidden Gem Racer on NES - Knight Rider
    Its one of the first racers that utilized all of the mechanisms on the dash of inside the vehicle, forcing you to pay close attention while driving. Its a great alternative to Outrun, which the NES did not have. The background graphics changed to different real cities on each level, a very nice touch for the time. There is two modes, driving and a mission mode that gave you the ability to shoot while driving. In both modes, you have the ability to make your vehicle jump extremely high up into the air, which is awesome.

      Those are pretty common so I'm guessing underrated/underappreciated even though the collecting landscape has been changing post 2014 to where incoming collectors could view what were/are popular fairly common titles as now "uncommon" thanks to Ebay availability.
      It took the YT crowd almost a decade to wake up to many of the common titles hardcore gamers grew up with and a big part of the overlooking also had a lot to do with the younger crowds reviewing Nes titles a few years ago (following the Avgn inspired trend of the time) before acquiring the experienced eye for acknowledging what a gem looks like.

      John Riggs: RIGG'd Games ---> When I was 10, I was using the old NES Advantage controller when I faced the Watch Me duo. I had the turbo on and just held that button down for about 10- 15 minutes (I mean, I was 10. I was an idiot) before getting frustrated and launching the Advantage across the bed just to stare at the screen in disbelief. Just when I yell out "WHAT DOES IT TAKE???" They melt away. That moment made it one of my favorite NES games of all time.

    As John mentioned, Cowboy Kid IS a lot like Mystical Ninja. Actually, it's almost just like a reskin of the Japan-only Famicom game Ganbare Goemon 2 (with different levels, of course), which is an earlier game in the Goemon, also known as Mystical Ninja series. So if you liked this one, you should probably check that one out, and even the first Ganbare Goemon game, because it's pretty similar. The first one is even available for the GBA as a part of the Famicom Classics series.

    Great video, but just so you know, that is a white lion, not a tiger on that particular game. I mean, the game itself is called "Ghost Lion". I'm just going to chalk this up to a verbal slip because I refuse to allow myself to believe that you don't know the difference.

      Its a good game, but not hidden, it debuted at #9 in Nintendo power upon release... Hidden now, maybe, but it wasn't. If a game cracked the nintendo power top 10 at any point, I don't consider it hidden, b/c it was voted upon by fans of the most popular games at the time. The video is what I'd consider hidden gems, little fanfare, maybe got a 1/2 page ad in EGM or something at one point, sparse rental /store stocks.
