    It's interesting but BPR really left us E-Tec owners out in wind. I purchased a new Boston Whaler 210 Montauk in 2016. I swapped out and upgraded the factory mounted Mercury 150HP outboard for a new 2016 200HO G2 E-Tec. Now my E-Tec needs about $5k worth of out of warranty work, but the parts just are not available, and the dealer support is almost none existent, so I am considering spending another $25k to repower with a 200HP Yamaha. So much for being loyal to Evinrude and BPR. My experience makes hard to imagine BRP will support the Rotax engine in the long haul.

  • @Wipsplash

    I used to repair the inboards on BRP Jet boats. Most mechanics wouldn't touch them because you have to hang upside down in the engine compartment for hours in oil, gas and water. They broke often. I think that was why BRP abandoned making jet boats anymore because owners couldn't deal with all the reliability problems and cost. Now they make pontoons with the engine being easy to get to but then put it below the water line with will eventually become a nightmare.

    If I'm not mistaken that'll be a SeaDoo/SkiDoo engine in there. I wouldn't worry too much about the engine being horizontal, the extra gearing is not much more to it than the Suzuki offset driveshaft. However, how it manages being below the water line will have to be seen. I suppose all SeaDoo's and inboards of all types have their engine below the water line, but it's a little different when it's in the boat.

    • @midwestadventurelife
      @midwestadventurelife  Před 9 měsíci

      There's a very well thought out seal that covers the engine housing

    • @Nonplused
      @Nonplused Před 9 měsíci

      @@midwestadventurelife That is precisely the part that would give me concern down the line. Probably 1-2 hours extra labor every time the cowling has to come off and on, and I'm sure the seal has to be replace occasionally. What does it cost and how available will it be?
      If the engine is 2-stroke and fuel injected, how hard would it be for them to mount it vertically? Maybe that'll come down the road. Not everyone needs a low profile engine, which is the main advantage.
      I'm not too concerned about the horizontal mount and the gearing, it has to be better than an inboard/outboard. No constant-velocity joint or bellow. From this perspective even the seal can't be as bad as having a bellow that can sink the whole boat back there.
      I'd be willing to give the engine a try even with that seal if economies of scale (the engine is on other platforms) leads to a good price. Outboards are getting hugely expensive.

    • @midwestadventurelife
      @midwestadventurelife  Před 9 měsíci

      @@Nonplused I actually had the opportunity to talk to the engineer who designed the engine. I've have the covers off the motor as well. It's about a 5 minute process to remove the cover. There's a nice heavy gasket there. Maybe over years and years it would need to be replaced, but it's very simple to get to and remove if needed. The bolts are designed to bottom out where needed. They suggest a specific torque to re-tighten to, but even suggested it was not a critical factor as long as it was tight.
      Correct - it's still less seals than an I/O has. Bellow and shift boot. those move and get flexed all day long, if they fail the boat sinks. I don't forsee an easy fail with this seal. IF it were to leak the motor detects it and reacts accordingly as well.
      Thanks for watching and having the conversation.

    I've got a generation 1 Etec and I love the technical design concept. HOWEVER, that's where it ends. I live in fear of my engine suddenly dying. Seems the amount of stories of the EMM (the engine computer) just dying for no reason, is just way too many. Seems BRP have got so absorbed with innovation they completely forget about reliability. Car computers seem bullet-proof, and I barely ever hear of one failing despite the millions of vehicles on the road for many years. They also put the entire battery charging system within the computer module so it needs to be water cooled and has seawater flowing through it. Seems like this new engine may be using a lot of the same gear. Now they get all "innovative" again and design a submerged motor. Well, gaskets can eventually leak, seals can leak, or you get some crap in during assembly. Then the engine is sitting not being used for a few months and seepage starts filling up the engine compartment................................... And what about maintenance, and removing that lid. I'm quite happy with a single lever at each side, and I simply lift the cover off. Seems BRP just cannot forsee customer perception of these wacky ideas, regardless of whether they are technically good or bad. What are they going to come up with next. Many boaters did not take to the 2 stroke design but BRP do not seem to have learned from this, and clearly they have no idea of market acceptance, and create this thing.
    Back to my Etec, let's not forget parts availability (i.e. unavailability). That's another thing I live in fear of, and can imagine it may not be too long before a dealer (one of the few) says, "Sorry, can't get that anymore", and my engine is scrap. I wouldn't trust this company for a second, they have neither brains nor integrity.

      @midwestadventurelife well sir its almost totally submerged and no cover is totally water proof and the engine is injected ..lots of electrical parts and no sensor or pump is going to keep an ocean or lake out of it

    Take it for what it’s worth……. This “product” is an obvious disaster waiting to happen! To have this “outboard” submerged is an idiotic concept! There WILL be water intrusion! Anyone that has a clue about the boating industry knows that over time this engine will end up being a paper weight! To think this concept is the direction BRP went is laughable!

      take 2 of these 1.9's and make a 3.8L OP 2 stroke inboard with that.Or better yet 4 1.9l's for a 7.6L inline 6 OP 2 stroke. Achates Power should get with Rotax on this! mart.cummins.com/imagelibrary/data/assetfiles/0058689.pdf
