  • We have a real live Cabinet Secretary with us in News Agents HQ today - David TC Davies insists the election still winnable for the Conservatives - and says if you want to see what Labour would do in power, then look at the mess unfolding in Wales. Is he missing something or are we?
    Later, Peter Conradi - author of Who Lost Russia - takes us gently through all that is unfolding right now in Russia, Ukraine and Georgia, and why - despite the Western sanctions - it all speaks to a resurgent Putin.

      This is just another aspect of an ongoing tory policy. Local authorities in England that the tories don't like have been underfunded for years. Their objective is to discredit such as the Welsh Government, Notts and Birmingham councils while they strangle them with funding cuts and pile ever more responsibility on them.

    • @MegaWelshpanda
      @MegaWelshpanda Před 16 dny +3

      yep the barnet forumla which desperatly needs changing to be needs based funding rather than the current per capita funding, the lords in 2009 released a report advising government that they should change it and they were ignored and the government know if it was moved to needs based the senedd would be able to do their job properly.

      @MegaWelshpanda I get so angry, I live on the North Wales coast, we have hundreds of thousands of wealthy English retirees who vote tory and voted for brexit. They take up Hospital beds, appointments, need operations ,take up GP appointments, social care etc, we don't get extra money for them, our local hospital was built 50 years ago and was plenty big enough, hundreds of thousands of houses and posh apartments have been built since then, not affordable for locals and these people think England keeps Wales and that they are doing us a favour coming to live here and spending their money.

  • @biggmick1
    @biggmick1 Před 17 dny +4

    The reason the Tory's won so many Police & Crime Commissioner's (They didn't win more than Labour, that's a lie), is that the PCC's they won are in more rural areas that have far smaller populations than the PCC's that Labour won in the major cities. For example London has almost twice the population of the East Midlands yet it has only 1 PCC and the East Midlands has 5. If they were allotted by population size London would have 9 PCC's. And even with this massive disparity in representation Labour still have more PCC's in the East Midlands than the Tory's. So the real question is, is David TC Davies a fool or a liar? There is also a 3rd option.

    Untrue about 20 mph. We don't have lower educational standards on Wales - perhaps poorer results and more poverty -years of Westminister underfunding.
    A bit sad that the Secretary of Wales appears to do it down - ever trots out a party line- the Conservatives in Wales are a force of negativity.
    Hopefully he will soon be gone.

    • @SlowhandGreg
      @SlowhandGreg Před 12 dny

      I had a deeper look into council funding and a big part of the problem is statutory services, child services are higher in poorer more urban areas as is housing support.
      Last year 20 billion was spent on housing support this is after years of right to buy reducing housing stock.
      Also councils lost the rent that these houses generated so 20 billion in additional cost + what 10-15 billion in lost rents

    The government controls how much money Wales receives. In a time where councils are going bust because the funding has been cut to the bone while statuatory requirements have increased year on year.
    DD talking about reductions in standards whilst the funding has meant hospitals and schools have had to close. Not a big shock.

      We've had Tory governments for 32 of the last 45 years and it has been disastrous.

      A lot of potential Labour voters won't turn up to vote, thinking it's in the bag.
      The Tory smear machine has barely begun churning.
      And gerrymandering means it takes more Labour votes to get an MP, than Tory votes.
      So he's right to urge everyone in Labour to campaign like they're five points behind.

      If you were old enough to remember the election of 1992 you’ll remember that Labour were high in the polls and the Conservatives still won, nobody should be complacent about elections, especially Labour. Victory isn’t won until the last vote is counted.

    pcc went from 30 tory, 8 labour before the election to 19 tory and 17 labour and labour won the popular vote by 150,000. I would not describe that as a great result

      You're forgetting the PCC's that are also Mayors (London, Manchester, and the 3 Yorkshire Mayors), That puts Labour up another 5 to 22 out of the 42 total in England and Wales. So surprise, surprise another Tory lie.
