Me! I'm almost 45 and I always shower/bathe in the evenings. Sometimes in summer when I get very sweaty after mowing the lawn or something like that and have things planned afterwards I shower in the afternoon and then usually in the evenings too. I am NOT a morning person and getting up earlier just to shower would make me grumpy and irate for the rest of the day. A small wash in the mornings is fine, but don't drag me under the water in the mornings. I don't care about pseudo health benefits, but someone who tried to force me to shower in the mornings would seriously shorten their own life span! Also going to bed all sweaty every night? How much money for new mattresses do these people think I have???

So my father gave me some good ideas behind the shower debate.
He told me that Showering at night is more Blue Collar vs morning being a more White Collar thing.
If you have been working in the shop all day working on cars, wood, etc; you're gonna want to shower at night to get all the dirt/grim/oil/greese/saw dust off.
If you wear a suit and tie when you go into work, you should take a shower in the morning to assist in shaving and smelling better throughout your work day.
    Just some... shower thoughts.

As a night showerer myself, a major point in favor of night showers that you didn't mention is time. I happen to have a fairly long shower routine (curly hair and shaving means longer times). If I shower in the morning, it feels like I'm on a time crunch because I have other things I need to go do after, plus I would have to get up significantly earlier to ensure I have time to do it before I go. Showering at night, on the other hand, is quite relaxing: I can take my time and don't have to worry about going anywhere or doing anything after. Showering at night is also often more appealing to women who have more complex beauty routines (skincare, haircare, etc.) for this exact reason (also helps to get any makeup off at the end of the day). Showering at night also gives my hair plenty of time to air dry, while morning showers would mean I'd have to blow dry it or have wet hair for half the day.

I have long hair, but I mostly shower in the morning or during the day (so, 3rd option here, maybe?). But I normally get up, take a walk with my dog, do some excercise (at least, lately I did more often than not), so showering in the morning washed all the sweat off etc. Also, I'd rather head into office freshly showered etc.
As a child, I did mostly shower before heading to bed. That changed, when I went to the US for a year and my hostmother was showering in the morning. I just kinda picked up the habit. And it kind sticked with me.
But, also, if I don't feel like showering in the morning (because, working from home or weekend) and I didn't excercise, so not sweaty, I might wait until midday to shower or early afternoon. Like, it's hot currently were I live and showering, using colder water, is just sooo refreshing and can give me a much needed boost later in the day. But the same would wake me up too much at night.

Another benefit of showering at night (for people in dry climates) is using body lotion after the shower! If I shower in the morning then I have to skip the body lotion because it makes it so time consuming and annoying to put on anything form fitting (skinny jeans, leggings, tights, fitted long sleeve shirts, etc.). Not an issue at all if I shower at night. My skin is always way softer and healthier if I routinely shower at night. Plus it just makes me sleep so much better. 😊

I am night owl-just an idea of getting up earlier in order to shower make me sick 🤣 Every minute of sleep is precious in the morning for me. I can't go sleep much earlier, my peak of mental activity is between 20-23 h. I have to get up to my job at 5 am, so I am abosulely not willing to waste my time in the shower in the morning 😂

Former horse person, night person, also night showerer but mainly because of my hair, even if I were willing to blow dry it (I'm not) I still fog the heck out of the car if I drive to work after a shower, and freezing hair in the winter sucked when I was a morning shower. And it'd happen even when I had short hair, my scalp wants to stay damp for hours so it's way easier to hang it over the pillow and let it dry when I sleep.

You absolutely sweat WAY more in the day when active than you do laying in bed in an air conditioned room. I feel nasty when I get home. No way in the world am I getting to bed without showering. Then I wake up the next day still feeling good and not needing to waste my sleeping time with something else.

As a tropical nation, it is actually very common to shower at both day and night (or at least thats how it is here in malaysia). You actually get the best of both worlds. Showering with cold shower during the day right after you wake up is super refreshing. It gets your brain moving, and overall freshes you up very well for the day both physically and mentally.
Being a tropical nation, its common to sweat so a lot of people also shower at night. The time people shower at night varies from dusk to a bit late at night around an hour or two before going to sleep. Night showers can help you wind down and relax after a long day. This works very well if you exercise or workout during the evening as you can clean yourself up for a clean night/sleep. I highly recommed showering at both day and night 👍

Night showerer here. Sometimes in the worst of the summer, if I've been outside and gotten all sweaty, it'll be an afternoon shower, but mostly, I do it at night. Among other reasons, my hair looks its best if I wash my hair at night and go to bed with it wet. It dries more slowly that way, and I wake up with amazing, smooth waves and no frizz. The other benefit, especially when you have roommates who shower in the morning, is you don't have to worry about running out of hot water. :)

His answer to the daily migraine question was SPOT ON. I have had daily migraines since 2021, which my doctor in my previous state ignored because they "aren't isolated to a single side of your head", so they "couldn't be migraines". Got a new doctor, he immediately said they were migraines and referred me to a neurologist. Went to the neurologist, he put me on an antidepressant (Amitriptyline - non SSRI), which he said, in his words, "studies have shown it doesn't work for depression very much, but great for migraine prevention." It's been only a couple of weeks and I've seen about a 50% reduction in frequency and intensity. The only drawback of this medication for me is that I can't really miss a day, at least not until I'm migraine free for a couple of months. And its other side effects have also helped me with my chronic anxiety and sleep problems.

I think the shower debate just depends on peoples schedules. I'm personally team morning shower because I work a lot in the afternoon and evening. My hair is also loosly wavy and loses its hold easily, so I like to air dry and allow gravity to make it manageable

My doctor proscribed me something for my migraines thats main use was for Blood Pressure, Difficulty Sleeping, and Depression... Not only did it cut the migraines down to 2-3 every two months instead of 2-3 a week... I also suddenly felt better about myself and more social.
Go figure: Sleeping well and not having to suffer all week makes a person happier overall!

Dr Mike you should talk about dysautonomia. I haven't seen a doctor that is a youtuber talk about it and as a person with dysautonomia and other chronic things i find it important to bring awarness of this barely known symdroms or chronic illnesses. I love your videos and i hope you do talk about this. You make my really awful days better 💌

I'm actually super happy that someone brought up Rosacea! I had it REALLY bad about 5-6 years ago, to the point where even full-coverage makeup wouldn't hide the bumpy/tough skin. It can be agitated by certain foods (e.g. sodas, chocolate, fried foods), but in my experience it can also be caused by stress. I finally got put on the proper mental health medications in late 2018, and within six months my rosacea went away. Now I'm not sure if there's also a correlation that the medicine I was prescriped helped treat whatever actually causes rosacea or what, but I haven't dealt with that pesky condition since!

8:30 years and years ago when my mom was struggling with alcoholism, she was normally still conscientious of not mixing medication and alcohol, but one time she did, and she started hallucinating. Imagine, me, a teenager at the oldest, being called upstairs by my drunk mom in her bed. And she's softly giggling to herself, and points at the closet, telling me there's someone in there playing hide-and-seek. Absolutely terrifying. Thankfully nothing worse happened, but I'm begging people to please not take that risk.

A lot of people with long hair shower at night because your hair can dry overnight and no need to use a blowdryer, which is damaging and a waste of time. I used to show at night, now i prefer to take a bath at night while watching CZcams videos. I take a quick shower in the morning (3-4 minutes) after working out but don't wet my hair then. I wash my hair separately at a moment that's convenient.

Okay, I liked this video for one simple reason. Your doctor needs to know you. Prescription wise, or even over the counter. I once said yes when I was 16 if I smoked cigarettes to the doctor in front of my mother.
My mother kind of freaked out upon hearing this. The doctor had to calm her down as I had just answered truthfully, and I understood that they needed to know this information. I understood even at that young age, that holding anything back had no upside.
The car ride home was an earful...but looking back, I didn't even hesitate. I don't now remember what I was being seen for. But I remained honest.
I'm just going to add, that no matter your age, answer your doctor's questions truthfully.

Dental student here. In Australia, "prescription toothpaste" would most likely be referring to Colgate Neutrafluor 5000. Usual adult toothpastes contain 1450 ppm fluoride, whereas Neutrafluor contains, as the name suggests, 5000 ppm fluoride. The increased fluoride content is to better promote tooth remineralisation (i.e. replacing lost mineral content to keep teeth strong) and are prescribed for patients at a higher risk of experiencing dental decay.

    • @MariusNinjai
      @MariusNinjai Před 8 měsíci

Would a dentist prescribe the tooth paste? or would have to do some test somewhere to check if it's needed?

    • @ijs5587
      @ijs5587 Před 8 měsíci

@@MariusNinjai We have what's called a "Caries Risk Assessment", which basically takes into account various patient factors to determine their risk of experiencing tooth decay. Some examples include the amount of active decay on the patient's teeth, and the patient's amount of fluoride exposure. If the dentist deems the patient to be in the high risk group, then they are able to prescribe a high strength fluoride toothpaste. No additional tests are required for the prescription.

I’m on team nighttime shower. 😂 I think this comes from growing up in a family of 8 with only one small bathroom. We had to take turns. Also when I take a shower in the morning my eyes burn. Not sure why, but it doesn’t happen at night. Plus I love it when I wash the sheets, make the bed and take a shower all on the same night. It is a glorious time known as “clean body, clean sheets.” That’s always a great night of sleep. 😆

As a definite evening person, I either shower during lunch when I work from home, or in the evening if I have to go to the office. I already have to get up several hours before what would be my natural rhythm so Im not getting up 10 or 15 minutes more early to get a shower. As long as you change your bedsheets and pillowcases semi-frequently, you'll still be clean in the morning unless its really hot and in that case I will be sweaty when I get to work anyway, even with air conditioning.
Sweat isnt a major problem either if you are healthy and hydrated, a fresh shirt wont start to smell in a span of a few hours.

Shower at night. Another reason for me this is better, I have eczema and I'm supposed to apply a medication I wear overnight. Showering before I apply the medicine means not only is the area clean, but I'm also getting that leave on medication where it's needed at the most crucial point when the skin is most vulnerable to drying out and irritation.
But also like you brought up, I have trouble getting to sleep some nights, and the warm shower followed by wrapping up in a blanket helps me get into that sleep mode. AND I'm a horrible morning person, so getting that extra 10-15 minutes to sleep in is great.
