  • First impressions and a thorough dirt test of the 2021 Honda CRF300 Rally by Motorcycle Adventure Dirtbike TV (MAD TV).
First impressions of the bike were gained whilst riding it for Andrew Clubb, editor of Australian Adventure Bike Magazine, who was photographing it for the latest edition of the magazine.
The following day I took the bike on a 400 kilometre loop of Freeway, Blacktop and twin track to test its adventure credentials.
MAD TV is renown for conducting thorough reviews of adventure motorcycles. Recent reviews include the 2020 Husqvarna 701 LR, 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R, 2020 KTM390 Adventure.

Totally agree with the closing comments on the need for a real world CRF450/500L....with a service schedule and at a price point that 'normal' riders can live with. When the CRF450L came onto the market here in the UK, my local dealer despaired over Honda's missed opportunity to plug a gap in the market. Clubby nailed it, a 500 single, as light and strongly built as possible, with a big tank and rally fairing and minimal electronics is what so many of us all want.
I've got the CRF250L and the T7, and at 60kg the wee Honda suspension does me fine. It was like listening to myself at times when you were describing the standing position, it is horrible (I'm 6ft). I'd like to somehow get slightly lower pegs, and higher bars, but without feeling like it might end up like sort of custom motorcycle ape hangers.
If the wee Honda was just a bit more capable on eating up road miles, I'd have it as my only bike, as the weight of the T7, and the thought of lifting it (knackered shoulder here) , makes me ride like a new rider a lot of the time, nervous (much as I love the T7)
Great summary of the 300 rally, and from my limited knowledge of very similar, absolutely spot on. Nice one lads.
Orra best from Scotland, where we wouldn't mind a big mile muncher, same as you Aussies and Americans ;)

Thank you Dave for such a great review. I live in Washington state in the US and I am still waiting for my CRF300L Rally to get here. If the supply Chain ever gets moving again Honda is going to have a hard time keeping these bikes in stock. I started riding again in 2012 after not having ridden for about 40 years. I bought a Honda CRF230L that I still have but also bought a NC700X in 2013 to ride as a adventure bike but it is to heavy for this 70 year old guy to pick up so I think the Rally is going to work prefect for me if it ever comes in. Looks like many agree with Clubbys comments. Regardless of CC I think 40-50hp is the sweet spot for a DS. I have a 690R and love it however it is too powerful on the dirt for an intermediate rider like myself. KTM are bringing out a 490 but disappointingly it's a twin so it will be heavy like an ADV. Singles have come a long way and are much smoother nowadays however manufacturers are hesitant to offer them still due to old perceptions.

Y’ know, many (perhaps most) small capacity bikes are sold with suspension set ups for the light, 65kg rider. Heavier riders then need to spend $$$ to change it.
Then you need to spend more on all the other bits and pieces to make it off-road worthy - that’s what the manufacturers make us do.
I understand that a ROAD bike should be sold with road-spec parts, but surely a dual sport should be sold with real dual sport parts as standard!
Let’s return to the first point: suspension for skinny kids. The big manufacturers claim they are fighting and competing for sales but they are NOT offing us what we want or even what we need!
If these massive companies want to shift more bikes off the showroom floors, then the one that sells bikes with a choice of spring to suit the rider (no difference in cost), will become the winner, right?
I think we’ve been dictated to for far too long. It’s time that the consumer started making some demands - sell us a dual sport bike that is dual sport ready straight off the showroom floor, at a competitive price, or stick your ‘build your own bike kit’ up your whattsit
