Fun fact about this movie: animators who didn’t work “up to standards” on Prince of Egypt were sent to work on Shrek as a “punishment”. They called it “getting Shreked”. Today, Shrek is known all across the world and is far more iconic than its creative nemesis.
And now "getting Shreked" has a completely different, lighthearted meaning to it
I love that for them
To be fair, though, if we're talking about quality of animation, I think it kind of shows. Regardless of whether or not Shrek became a juggernaut franchise, if we're to compare the animation of the first Shrek film and the Prince of Egypt, the latter has absolutely stunning animation, while the former is rough around the edges (without factoring in the 3D animation of the time, that is).
Shrek is still a great movie, but the composition of the animation team doesn't really surprise me.
I absolutely love Prince of Egypt, especially the sound track
What chainmail? Expecting common villagers have chainmail on is like expecting ecveryone in the streets today waking around in a tactical vest
Fun fact: Shrek was added to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2020. It was the first animated feature film to selected that wasn't from Disney.
And when will How To Train Your Dragon and Kung-Fu Panda be inducted
@@samjoshwilliams4713I wonder which one of illumination will be added somedat
Hearing “All Star” play in Shrek may be the most memorable thing to most, but anyone that has been around the block before Shrek would know that the Digimon Movie played the song before it did. Also, RIP Steve Harwell.
🙋♀️ me I recalled that, was there to see the digimon movie
Digimon! Yes I love that movie. I’m so glad the franchise is still going
@@kay-jay1581 I am too. I finished the 2020 series not so long ago and it was a good.
The first movie to have it was mystery men
Hell yeah and I live in the Digimon movie when they play “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies.
The hankercheif thing is really, really old. I dont know when it became a symbol of a maidens favor, but they would often bestow them to knights or champions. If you were in love with the knight, you'd tie the handkerchief around his wrist, and it was supposed to be a blessing to guide them safely back from battle, and a ward against evil. If a knight recieved or was seeking favor from a noble lady, it would be common for them to dedicate victories in tournaments in the name of their admired. It wasnt just a courtship thing, but it was most of the time.
now I'm just imagining some knight with like 20 different handkerchiefs because he's that popular. XD
Fun fact, ketchup wasn't always red. It started as a white sauce you mixed into your food and other sauces. Later heinkell discovered tomatoes had the ummami they all sought and simplified the recipe. Originally ketchup was devised to replace/ease the burden on imported fermented fish sauces and fermented soy sauces. The dude succeeded beyond imagination, and now all ketchup is made on tomatoes and world spread even more than the fish sauces it emulated.
Im so confused
@@bhavanijayant526 the dude Heinkel, discovered that tomatoes had a strong ummami flavour, and thus modern ketchup was born.
Ketchup itself had existed long before that, but it was a white sauce and you used it like you normally use soy and fish sauces. The reliance on importing fermented sauces was expensive and supply was always in demand. In swept Heinkel and he pretty much ended western need of these asian sauces.
I think I was drunk and forgot many do not have the underlying context.
@@bhavanijayant526 ketchup stared as a fish sauce
Boom is correct about Chris Farley.... He had recorded _most_ of his lines but couldn't finish due to his passing, so they hired MM. Apparently there is surfaced footage of him doing the voice work.
Came here to confirm this as well, would've been cool to see Farley's version on screen. Also Mike Myers recorded all the lines in a Canadian accent but felt something was missing with the character and asked to record in a Scottish accent, Steven Spielberg let him try even tho they already liked the Canadian Shrek and they ended up going with that instead anyway which is awesome!
That version or at least clips of it was on CZcams at one point. The energy was quite different. I’m not so sure how well it would’ve done with the emotional climaxes.
I could be wrong but I also believe that despite some of Mike Myers dialogue being different to Chris Farley's, all of Donkey's dialogue was unchanged despite being responses to the latter's dialogue.
@@speake7777777 It would have definitely been different. I’m glad we got Mike Myers and I agree his version is better, but Farley also would have done his own amazing thing with it like every role he was in
RIP Steve Harwell (singer and occasional piano player for Smash Mouth) a 2000s wonder and legend has passed. He shall continue with every "All Star" replay, memed or serious. It's a shame.
It was definitely heartbreaking what happened to Harwell. Smash Mouth defined the 90s and 2000s with their music. All Star is the song I most associate with Dreamworks. And for Harwell to die at 52 years old? So unfair. My condolences to his family and friends that helped him become a legend.
the they used there songs in more movies and shows then shrek during the201-- era it qwas pretty much everywere back then
Didn't know if you guys knew this or not, but Lord Farquaad is based on Michael Eisner. When Jeffrey katzenberg left Disney after losing a power play to Eisner he made Shrek as a big F you to his former company. Dulaq is based off of Disney World and even Lord farquaad's name is based on what they used to call Michael Eisner behind his back. You can probably figure it out but it rhymes with buck nod
Dude that’s amazing. This whole movie and the cast is savage af. Would watch this a million times over than watch nowadays Disney films
This movie is even better when you find out it's a big middle finger to Disney and Farquaad is a parody of Disney's CEO.
We meme on Shrek a lot, but it had a large and irreversible effect on American pop culture, especially for the next several years after it’s release.
Fun Fact: Mike Myers originally recorded Shrek's lines without a Scottish accent, and only later convinced the producers to let him go back and re-recorded the character with the accent.
Many people don't know which fairy tale the donkey is from, but he is from the story of Pinocchio. He's one of those boys That turned donkeys
I did not know this 😯😯
could also be the talking donkety from the fairy tail the donkey by the grimm brothers which i think are more likley
That boy gotta deep voice lol
Really? I thought he's an OC
Technically he’s from the Shrek book but that theory is more fun tbh
The "Layers" part shows how complex Shrek's character is, or how a protagonist of a story doesn't need good/heroic qualities to be a well written protagonist. For example, certain anti-heroes.
Shrek has heroic qualities, they just had to be drug out of him kicking and screaming, which are often the most fun protagonists
But he has heroic qualities, is just that he is not just a goody two-shoes
The onion metaphor doesn’t work that well, yes onions have layers but it’s going to be onion all the way to the center, you’re not going to be surprised. If any thing Donkey’s parfait version works better.
I was told about Steve Harwell’s death two days ago, and it was definitely heartbreaking. This dude and his crew defined the 90s and 2000s with their music. And for Harwell to die at 52 years old? So unfair. My condolences to his family and friends that helped him become a legend.
I've seen this movie countless times and I dont believe I ever noticed the mama bear rug or why baby bear was crying. Holy crap awesome catch! Please do the rest, I love seeing your reactions to stuff.
The song "Bad Reputation" 14:40 . Was played on the end credits of One Piece Film: Z by Avril Lavigne.
I remember in high school during junior year, 2 years before pandemic, our chemistry class watched Shrek cause it was close to the end of the school year and we finished exams, the most memorable thing to me was when the opening came on and everyone sang smash mouth while eating pizza….good times
I love the bit where Shrek and Donkey are making fun of Lord Farquaad.
Shrek: Let me put it to ya this way, Princess. Men of Farquaad's stature are in SHORT supply.
Donkey chuckles- I don't know, Shrek. There ARE those who think LITTLE of him.
😁😅😂🤣☠️
Also, RIP Steve Harwell
First off that's a cropped vest.
I've been studying clothes and fashion, and when it comes to the length of clothes both men and women can fit into two categories.
Petite(cropped or visually broken up)
Balanced(about the hip line or a seamless look)
Vertical(below knee or unbroken)
So say you have petite(means you look narrow or small all over), you'd want a cropped vest. Shrek... well it doesn't work on Shrek. Shrek has Width, so it just looks very tight. Because Petite and Width cannot go together. If he was narrower and then shorter, it'd look good. But he's not.
Sure works on human Shrek, though
Oh then maybe he took it of some dumb villager who tried to “get the ogre”.
Fun fact; Remember the three bears from Puss In Boots: The Last Wish? If you looked closely at each of the bears, the Papa bear and Baby bear looked more disheveled/messy/ beat up than Momma bear. This would make sense considering the events of Shrek 1, being stressed out, tortured, and left in cages. Considering Momma bear was killed and turned into a rug in the original Shrek, this would suggest the Momma bear from The Last Wish is an entirely different bear from the original, one who hasn't endured the same painful events/conditions as the other two bears, showing continuity between the movies!
OMG I feel like those bears got an upgrade
We see mama bear again in the Karaoke Dance Party short with Papa Bear and Baby Bear, but maybe that's not canon.
My headcanon is that Papa in “The Last Wish” is the grown up baby from “Shrek” who raised his son to be tough to make sure nothing like this happened again.
This is why I love reactions. Even after so many years, there's still a lot of details I have never seen point out before!
Lord Farquaad (can’t remember who) was based off of an old boss the creators had before going to Dream Works. Say his name really fast and you’ll know how bad their relationship was.
We all love Lord Fuckwad.
Shrek is one of the funniest movies. Eddie Murphy as Donkey is too much, great songs, dark humor and funniest moments. Fiona is a badass princess with some awesome fighting moves. RIP to Steve Harwell, lead singer of Smash Mouth
🎵🎵🎵🫏🫏🫏😢😢😢🤣🤣🤣
"Shrek" and "Enchanted" are the perfect fairy tale satires. Now if only "Enchanted" could get on Broadway like "Shrek"...
Broadway shrek was bad tho
It wasn’t so much that it was bad, but that there was so little different that you may as well just watch the original. Farquad is a deadbeat son of the seven dwarves who got kicked out and that’s why he hates fairytale creatures and is short. Fiona gets a song about growing up in the castle waiting to be rescued. There you go, those are their only two real additions to the story.
That second chair observation was really good, I never thought about that till y’all brought it up.
Fun fact: comedian Chris Farley was originally going to voice Shrek in the movie, there's even an animatic of the camp scene with him in it which can be found on CZcams, but he unfortunately died before the movie was finished, so they got Mike Myers to fill the role instead.
Also, Farquaad gets a little "excited" underneath his covers in the bed scene.
And the bed scene is the one used by the E meme, with markiplier's face photoshopped in it.
Let's take a moment of silence to remember the great Steve Harwell who sang the two greatest songs in this movie😞😞😞😞😞
That handkerchief is not just royalty. It´s a token given by a lady to a knight and later on a gentleman. That´s why you always see it featured in Musketeer movies. In medieval ones a veil is more common, especially during joust tournaments. And still during bull fights in Spain (you know the lady throwing it to the torero)?
‘Shrek! Im look down!!!’ The most memorable quote form my childhood
34:18 oh my god! I remember they made cheetoes that made your tongue green, and I just looked it up and it was because of Shrek 2s release!! That definitely unlocked a memory.
This is still so funny to watch to this day. Groundbreaking movie at the time as well. All Star made this opening absolutely phenomenal. RIP Steve Harwell❤❤❤
Cannot believe you guys reacted to this! This made my day! That exploding bird scene killed me! Oh man, please continue reacting to this franchise: Shrek 3D, which is their honeymoon; Shrek 2 - the best animation sequel (well, personally, before Across the Spider Verse); and if you like, the Third and Fourth ones. You guys should definitely also react to the Madagascar franchise!
Also, a moment of appreciation to Steve Harwell. Never knew until I saw the comments. May he rest in peace, a legend towards our childhood music ❤🙏🏾
Looking at Dragon’s keep, I have to wonder what psycho with too much money built a castle in the crater of an active volcano which itself is in a dry wasteland?
Fairy Godmother.
A weird inconsistency about this movie is that we see mama bear in Puss in boots the last wish so unless there’s multiple three bears, she somehow survived or got brought back to life
Also 🤓
Or it's step mama bear? 😅
Papa bear remarried
We also see her during the Karaoke Dance Party short.
In the medieval time period, the vest would have been considered the outer garment and the white shirt would have been akin to underwear. So when you see some movie or show where they are wearing the vest open with the white shirt exposed, they are wearing it wrong (as that is styled in a modern sense).
There was a Shrek 3D movie. Had its own story and everything. If you guys can find a copy, you gotta see it.
Yeah it was the ghost of lord farquad the one before Shrek 2
What's wild is this series has a sequel that is better than the first movie! Y'all HAVE to watch Shrek 2, it's SO good!!
Loved the reaction and hoping you guys will react to the rest of the Shrek movies too (2-4). Shrek 2 is one of the most universally loved sequels and although 3 is the weakest of the films, it’s worth seeing if only for the sake of also experiencing the 4th movie :) I’m not sure if it’s included in your Blu-ray pack but Shrek 2 also usually has an extra option in the main menu for a fun post-movie scene (though that segment, should you include it, would probably need to be heavily edited or muted on YT to avoid copyright… you’ll get why lol). Such a fun movie series, with lots of laughs and heart in them
"Oh my god! You ate the princess!"
Charlie´s Angels movie was 1990 and Cameron Diaz who voices Fiona (and likely facial features based on) was one of the 3. I wouldn´t be surprised Fiona as a kick ass lady based on them.
RIP Steve Harwell. He was an all star.
Also upon you doing this I may become a patron now
Shrek 2 is one of my favorite movies ever. I've rewatched it wayyyy more times than the first one. (It's a bit less swears)
Ok I never noticed the whole thing of Shrek having a 2nd dining chair, good point
32:50 Ripley predated this by two decades. Strong women are not new. Every generation pretends that it's this brand new concept, but it's ancient. And the more people pretend like it's never happened, the more it pisses me off. There's amazing female characters, and I hate how people just sweep them under the rug
Agreed. It's so frustrating to have people pretend that anything good only came into being 5 minutes ago (historically speaking) and everyone were terrible people before then...
Shrek was the first movie I ever saw in Theartres. Will always be a favorite!
Princess Fiona is the type of princess Disney is trying to make nowadays. And, they're failing. 😅😅😅
It´s so funny Farquaad´s VA is John Lithgow who is 6ft 4 (1.93 m) tall!
32:41 Completely sidestepping the fact that the scene parodies both Trinity from the Matrix and Angelina Jolie's Tomb Raider. How big is the rock that Ruff has been living under?
8:28, the Mythbusters did test whether earwax could be used as candle, (it can’t, it doesn’t melt like paraffin or beeswax)
All-Star was also played at the end of Rat Race, with Steve Harwell actually performing. It was spectacular and the first time I saw him in that live-action movie.😢
Awesome reaction guys! Literally died at you guys laughing all the way through especially Ruff and Boom 😂please guys do a reaction to Shrek 2!!
We will never forget you Steve Harwell. You will be a Rock Star and an All-Star. Rest well.
Oh, y'all have to watch the musical. Love it or hate it, it's something to experience😂
Fiona legit fights like current mortal kombat characters
22:35
think of it this way, portraits are for royalty, but literally anyone can own a handkerchief, so of course a woman would give that to someone as a way to remember them
10:53 Apparently he is the kid of Grumpy and the Princess of the Princess and the Pea. So yeah, we see him have his father relocated along with his uncles.
Imagine an open world shrek game. I’d buy it.
Shrek was a generation, my dudes
1st of all, year you were correct about Chris Farley supposedly being the Shrek main character. But honestly, from what I've heard, the story had about 2 major re-writes, so even if they wanted to use most of his dialog, it wouldn't have fit.
2nd, half jackets/vests. It honestly depends. On one hand, it could be altered from a full tunic that had either stains or cuts/holes that were difficult to patch, and just worn as layers to protect against the elements. On the other hand, it's cheaper to make half a shirt than a full shirt, and if you're laboring outside, it would make movement easier to do while remaining clothed.
The Shrek games were very good. I played them all, even the racing one. Fun Fact: The dragon is named Elizabeth. R.I.P Steve Harwell
Didn't knew the dragon had a name. Cool.
Bro, I just found your channel and really enjoyed the reaction to the film! Shrek is my favorite animated film and it's so good with how original, crazy and funny it is. Cool video!
It wasn't Eddie Murphy in Madagascar, that was Chris rock
"If simps existed in the medieval times era" You really think they didn't? Of course many peasants simped for queens and princesses, and probably even kings and princes. You could even argue the idea of "courtly love", which was when knights pined for married noblewomen with no expectation that their love would be requited, was basically simping and it was seen as very common and highly noble.
Yeah, trovador’s whole thing was guys humiliating themselves for a lady’s love knowing nothings coming out of it. When you peel off the romanticism, it’s… kinda pathetic
When Fiona asks Shrek what his name is, he hesitated. Which leads me to believe that’s not his actual name.
Shrek's probably just not used to people talking to him normally, let alone asking what his name is.
@@blackwhiteartistry733 he does the same with Donkey when they first meet, but I was thinking maybe instead Shrek had almost forgotten his name after so long so he had to think about it.
I vouch for Shrek Retold at some point. It's an experience
A great experience, except for the chrischan part, considering the stuff it happened afterwards.
No need to kill an apple tree over one rotten apple though, so still a great, very enjoyable experience.
I am so ready for this Shrek journey can’t wait for them to see rest the films
You should watch the three Madagascar movies they're all rpetty good, also ice age those are great too
As for the Madagascar movies I recommend the trilogy. All 3 are mostly comedic movies with a little bit of heart, at least more comedic than Shrek here. But overall the trilogy is good, personally I think 2, 3, 1 is my personal order for which I like most. All are good but 2 and 3 are better than 1 I think. Or personally speaking.
The Penguins had a host of spin off stuff to them, special shorts, tv series and their own movie. I recommend the Christmas special of them, the TV series is funny I think, and the movie is enjoyable. So that's what I recommend on the the Penguins of Madagascar side of things. The series I will say I think is hard to find the whole series from season 1 to the final season so keep that in mind. The TV series is a comedy with their whole spy theme as the central focus.
RIP Smash Mouth
RIP Steve Harwell, you were the true All Star.
2:38 "Do the Roar!" 😊
In the version I watched on vhs parfait was never mentioned. Donkey was talking about everybody likes cake and cakes have layers.
God Shrek 1 and 2 are my childhood.
Farewell Steve Harwell, you were the greatest rockstar
Actually, The Big Bad Wolf of Shrek is both the one from Three Little Pigs and Red Riding Hood. Disney's Big Bad Wolf was also the same wolf in the Silly Symphony The Threee Little Pigs and The Big Bad Wolf which not only featured The Pigs but also Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandma, so it's quite likely DreamWorks took inspiration form those cartoons as they spoofs Disney Princess movies and fairy tales that Disney have covered in their Silly Symphonies cartoons.
The half vest was bc they were mainly made from a stiff leather and would not bend easy
This movies has so much adult humor that goes over kids heads, it’s hard not to burst out laughing when watching this as an adult😂
I remember having Smarties and hoping to get the larger green ones in the pack.
The Shrek Games Were Amazing. You were told right.
Please watch all of Shrek and Madagascar! I'm sure many would be interested and they're hilarious
Definitely need to react to the second shrek at least and Madagascar😂
Now is time for the best sequel of all time
GREEN AND PURPLE KETCHUP WAS AMAZING
The vests were short because people were poor, so they could not afford to replace most of their clothes after they were getting older. Most people had only 3 pairs of shoes throughout their lives. Vests and jackets especially were something that was made to be huge on them when younger, then by the teenage years(or the adulthood) to fit properly.
This is one of those films that can just about be watched in any language.
*35:12* “i don’t remember the red one. Eughhh”. Bruh knew what he was doing 😂😂
I rhink my fave thing about this being an antithesis to Disney is that shrek and fiona get to know each other over time before falling in love. It isnt just right away.
i only had the shrek 2 gamecube game. but it is very good. because it was designed to have 4 player co-op, and the main group is usually shrek fionna and donkey, they added red riding hood as a 4th player for some parts.
29:53 don’t be so sure guys. Some kids might figure out Mama Bear died in this movie. Some kids are smarter than you think 😉
14:21
I prefer this scene in Spanish but witching it with you guys makes this more bearable 😂
It isnt unusual that peasants, especially young poor farmhands could not afford enough cloth to make new clothes. And since farmhands were poor, had no land or real home of their own, they did not have a woman to sewn their clothes, generally gender roles were heavily reinforced, so few men and boys learn to handle a needle and thread, and those who did didn't have time for something elaborate.
So most clothes were kept, even when they outgrew them, or modified/patched with whatever scraps they had. Cloth was very very expensive, and finished clothes even more so. A linen shirt was super valuable, enough so you could and did pawn your shirt when short on coin, it was pretty much The most valuable item on your person.
I love the fan theory that Donkey was one of the kids who were brought to pleasure island. And that’s why he can talk.
I remember the hot sludge sundaes DQ made to promote Shrek… sundaes with gummy worms and fudge! They were great!
i remember rewatching this hung over af 2 years ago and it changed my life
In Latin America Donkey Instead of saying he'll make Waffles, he says "and in the morning I'm making Tamales" xd
3:23
Back in Medieval Europe most common pieces of men’s clothes were tunic and trousers. The thing is though, the materials were different and reflected social status: wealthy folks wore expensive cotton (back then) and poorer members of communities can afford mostly sheep wool (sometimes home-made).
But in both cases clothes could quickly get dirty and since not everyone had multiple sets of clothes, jackets and vests were solution.
At least most visible areas on chest and back were covered by either well-crafted silk half-jacket or simple yet comfortable vest made of cows leather.
Deferent time, but drip was important even then. Maybe much more.
P.S. Yes, in Mediaeval period people of all social classes laundered their clothes and washed themselves with soup.
They just done it once or twice per week.
"She's gonna get that cake maker murdered!" took me out lmao
Boom: Yeah that man was eating lunch
Me: Yeah, a lunch of frank and beans. XD
I love how these guys saw The Last Wish but didn't even watch Shrek yet XD
It's great how Puss' movie really attracted so much love from fans who havent even seen other parts of the Shrek franchise
