and Steve Harwell 1967-2023, Chris Farley was initially hired to voice Shrek and he had recorded nearly all of the dialogue for the character but he died before completing the project, according to David Spade on an episode of the podcast Bad Friends, Farley only had 5 days left of voice work and Farley's brother John was asked if he would come in and finish his lines but John refused, a story reel featuring a sample of Farley's recorded dialogue was leaked to the public in August 2015, DreamWorks then re cast the voice role to Mike Myers who insisted on a complete script rewrite to leave no traces of Farley's version of Shrek, according to Myers he wanted to voice the character for two reasons: I wanted the opportunity to work with Jeffrey Katzenberg: and [the book is] a great story about accepting yourself for who you are, Roger Ebert and Richard Schickel were film critics

Shrek's reveal that he's just misunderstood hits me so hard as an adult. He never wanted to not interact with others, others just judged him and wouldn't give him the time of day so he just assumed thats how he's meant to be. Scaring others just gave him an outlet to vent his frustration
No, it's true Steve Harwell the lead singer of "Smash Mouth" who made the song called "All Stars" unfortunately died last year on September 4th due to liver failure. RIP to the GOAT

The principal actors never met each other. They all read their parts separately, with a reader feeding them the lines. John Lithgow later admitted that, while he enjoyed playing Lord Farquaad, he was a little disappointed that he never actually worked directly with Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, or Eddie Murphy.
Eddie Murphy says the Shrek series is among his best works.
Mike Myers was in New York City when they realized that the line "What are you doing in my swamp?!" had never been read. So producer Jeffrey Katzenberg flew to New York City and had Myers read the line in the back of a limo.

In the scene where everyone is lining up with their magical creatures for sale, the woman who has Donkey is voiced by Kathleen Freeman. At one point she says "No! No!". This is said the same in the 1980 film Blues Brothers where she plays a nun, and Jake offers to get her money to save the orphanage and she says "No! No! I will not take your..."
Farquaad sending Shrek to save Fiona for him to get his swamp back could be a parody of the Wizard of Oz, as Oz would only grant Dorothy and her friend's wishes by killing the Witch of the West. Unlike the Wizard, Farquaad was honest as he got the swamp cleared for Shrek as agreed, although he threatened to change his mind.
Farquaad's executioner is seen breaking a mirror. According to a famous superstition breaking a mirror supposedly causes seven years of bad luck.
Farquaad's tourney has strange events such as horse wrestling and a drinking contest.
The knight that gives Donkey a mean stare is the same one that tried to capture him at the beginning.
Cameron Diaz has said that Princess Fiona's romantic/practical nature was more like her sister rather than herself.
Some viewers have complained that Robin Hood was English and should not speak with a French accent. It should be noted that in the film he is always referred to as "Monsieur Hood" and never as Robin.
When the fairytale creatures arrive at Shrek's swamp, you can see Papa Bear comforting Baby Bear at a fire... later in Lord Farquaad's castle, as he watches Fiona on the mirror you see Mama Bear as a rug, skinned and laying on the floor. Her ultimate fate, however, seems to be OK: she re-appears in the Video/DVD Karaoke scene, dancing with Papa and Baby Bears.

Actually: Lord Farquaad did make another appearance in Shrek 4-D(as a ghost, plus it takes place directly after the movie here) and his castle makes another appearance in Scared Shrekless(a halloween special).
This was one of my first animated films I saw in theaters with my family and I got to admit this film really does a hilarious job on making fun of Disney and the Fairytale genre in a good way. On top of that there were a lot of adult jokes that flew over my head as a kid and understood the context of these jokes when I got older.

If you guys have access to it? I HIGHLY recommend checking out the 15 minute film, "The Ghost of Lord Farquaad" next. It was originally called "Shrek 4-D" when it was shown at Universal Studios as a ride, then later released as it's own film for home releases. It acts as a nice bridge between Shrek 1 & 2, and explains what happened to Lord Farquaad!
