What I love about this movie, is that the entire film was meant to be one giant roast of Disney in general. eg. Farquaad looks like Michael Eisner, Dulock is basically Disneyland, fairytale tropes are challenged or outright reversed, and pop songs are used in place of original works in a musical.

    FUN FACT:
Don't know if anyone said this yet, but this was actually a film that was deemed to fail. While DreamWorks was working on other films at the time (like Prince of Egypt), this was considered a punishment project. If an animator pissed off a higher up or were a newbie to the team, they were made to work on Shrek since it they thought it was gonna be a flop. A lot of the production staff and animators laugh about it to this day since this film has now basically made Shrek their mascot.

When Shrek was doing test runs in theaters, All Star by smash mouth was a temporary placeholder until the original album was done. The audience loved All Star so much that they kept it for the final movie.

Shrek was innovative in that it's the first major mainstream animated movie that featured adult-oriented humor and themes, while catering to children at the same time. It was irreverent, iconoclastic, and made frequent pop culture references. Shrek influenced many animated movies to date.

Fun Fact: Mike Myers first originally recorded the movie in a Canadian accent, but fought to re-record it in a Scottish accent because it sounded more, "working class." Of course, this is after the role was given to him after Chris Farley died. It would have cost a few million to redo the lines, but Mike did it for free because he simply wanted to make the movie better. Also, If you ever have time, start the original Shrek movie on mute and also start Shrek Retold on YT at the same spot. It was a passion project where they had 200 creators animate and act the entire movie out with their own spin. If you watch them side-by-side, you can see what part you are in during the real movie and see their thought process. I suggest doing it sometime since it is free on YT

To think its already that old of a movie, sure makes one feel old... thing is, it was actually a surprisingly big step up from what Pixar had been doing quality wise, and it was the first of those types of (what we take for granted now days) CGI kids movies that didnt follow the Disney formula... which was something Dreamworks was great at. So about the backstory of the movie: the main creator of shrek, Katzenberg, was responsable for bringing disney back on track in his renaissance era in the 90s after a low point, but he was also pretty much snobbed when he was supposed to see his merit recognised so together with Spielberg and music executive Geffen, founded "Dreamworks SKG" (from the surnames of the founders). The studio built some income with minor movies (some of which were similar to projects K. knew since he was working at disney, like Antz) but also cults like The prince of Egypt, or Chicken Run, then in 2001 the big project he had in mind from the start (together with Spielberg): Shrek.
There's a number of interesting pieces of trivia, like numerous and hilarious "f*ck you" to disney: from the movie starting with shrek literally wiping his ass with disney fairytales, to Duloc looking suspiciously like a Disneyland, with its big-headed mascot and perfect rules; from Farquaad having similar face to the (at the time) disney ceo, to the poking fun at many classic disney tropes, obviously. In shrek 2, where more well known fairytale characters can be recognised, it's even more apparent (I don't wanna spoil I'll write another comment when you react to it). Finally, the technical aspect. Shrek was groundbreaking for cgi animation and the genre in general, so much it basically made Oscars come up with a whole new category, and won it. Soundtrack (that for the first time in a genre movie effortlessly incorporates estabilished pop songs and original ost) was iconic, same goes for the cast, and they even spent millions to re do scenes giving shrek scottish accent. The saga is also full of adult jokes (farquaad bed scene, the palace joke, donkey sleep talking..) and cinema or pop references among which matrix, lord of the rings, alien, spideman and many others.
(sorry this came out v long and also english is not my first language so i apologize for any typos and/or weird phrasing)

    Dreamworks' first major franchise.
This was based on the 1990 picture book by Willam Steig.
Although Mike Myers is the voice of Shrek, originally the late, great Chris Farley was casted first.
Also it was the first-ever recipient of the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
These films including the Puss In Boots spinoffs have grossed $3.5 billion plus worldwide.
Loads of specials on tv and streaming.
There was even an stage musical that ran from 2011 to 2013.

The reason why Robin Hood was given a French accent is that according to some records, he was the son of an impoverished nobleman-- and during the time that most Robin Hood stories are placed, English nobility was at least partially of Norman descent. Thus the court language of England - as well as the cultural standard of the time - was actually Norman French, not English.

I can't even imagine the planned Steven Spielberg production starring Bill Murray as Shrek, Steve Martin as Donkey, and Janeane Garofalo as Fiona! And when Mike Myers replaced Chris Farley upon the latter's death, he just 100% personified Shrek. The author of the book said the movie was vulgar--and that he loved it. His wife enjoyed it as well. The plot and details of the original children's book are very different, as Shrek could breathe fire, for example; he was kicked out of the swamp by his parents to go out into the world and make his own damage. In exchange for Shrek's rare lice, a witch gave him the power to be taken by a donkey to meet his true love, a princess even uglier than he. Shrek's biggest nightmare was children not being afraid of him. One nice touch was that any snake dumb enough to bite him would immediately go into convulsions and die.
