  • Welcome to the first episode in my new series digging into sound design and patch creation on the Korg Volca FM. In this episode we set the scene by discussing where FM and "traditional" subtractive analogue synthesis meet up.

    I was first introduced to synthesis with LA (Roland D-70) and PCM (E-mu Proteus) so FM synthesis is not daunting to me in the least. Having said that, when I first bought my Volca Keys and sat down to play it ... I thought it was broken because the sound was choked out via the filter cut off. xD But it turns out that yes, subtractive synthesis is a lot easier to work with.

    Hi Mr. Sink, ;-) loving your videos and music. What is the best piece of hardware the newby (re: skill-set) should buy to learn synthesis on? Peak? Digitakt?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 3 lety

      I am no enemy of menus, but I'd go for something that represents as much of the main aspects of synthesis knob-per-function. You haven't specified budget but I'll aim at the low-mid range.
      The Digitakt is wonderful but it's not really where I'd go to learn synthesis - it can do synthesis, but it's a sampler at it it's heart. The Peak would be a wonderful place to start from the standpoint of the sound if you were willing to make the investment, but might be overwhelming with possibilities.
      I still think even today that the original Minilogue offers a great deal for the money and gives you access to pretty much everything you'd expect in the traditional subtractive world. The Bass Station 2 sounds great and is a very versatile, capable monosynth. If you are somewhat curious about modular synthesis then the Minibrute 2S is a great gateway there.
      That's not exhaustive but there are some ideas for you.

      @OscillatorSink  Před 3 lety +1

      @@avantgardenovelist er, get a Sequential Prophet 6 I guess?! But I'm specifying a desirable synth which fits the bill there - I'm unconvinced that as a *learning* tool you'd learn any more about fundamentals of synthesis on a 3 grand synth vs. a 500 quid one, or even a 250 quid one if you shopped around.
      You could also argue that a really well specified modular system would really force you to learn the fundamentals - but you'd have to understand those fundamentals in order to spec a system, so it's catch22.

  • @jackevans2386
    @jackevans2386 Před 4 lety

    Hi, I have a technical question that no one can answer. You're streets ahead of most others technically. Perhaps you can help.
    My question: Is it possible to increase the pitch bend range of Volca FM ? The current range is set to +/- 2 semitones.
    Dexed's sensitivity or range is adjusted by hitting 'Parm' button and adjusting the 'Pitch Bend Range' potentiometer from +/- 0 to 12 semitones. Most synths have this functionality. It seems you can increase the pitch range associated with the Volca FM's EGs but not the pitch bend wheel.
    I've tried using RPNs 0x64 and 0x65 with no response.
    Hex data sent to Volca FM as follows:
    B0 64 00 ; ; Pitch Bend Range
    B0 65 00
    B0 06 0C ; ; 12 Semitones
    B0 26 00 ; ; 0 Cents
    B0 64 7F ; ; We're done
    B0 65 7F

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 4 lety

      I've not ever seen a Volca support RPNs so I suspect that's a non-starter.
      The DX7 could have its pitch bend range adjusted using sysex:
      F0 43 00 08 41 0y F7
      Assuming midi channel 1 and where y is the range (0-12). (I had to look that up, it's not something that I was able to pluck out of the air).
      But the Volca doesn't respond to single parameter messages, only full patches, and the function parameters (of which pitch bend range is one) aren't in the full patch format... This is my round about way of saying: I don't think you can, sorry.

    • @OscillatorSink

    How do you record the different automations on the Volca into your daw, without recording audio (which obviously prints the automation onto your file)? For example, if I want to gradually change the velocity and the decay in my recordings?
    I would like to record using midi, because then I could (hopefully) record the keys first, then go back and record the different automations on top of that. Is this possible? And then I guess I need to convert the track into audio at some point, so that I can record new Volca tracks without affecting the old one?
    Answers are highly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety

      All of the front panel controls on the FM can be addressed via midi cc. It'll depend on your daw, but most of them allow you to write in midi cc data as automation, or maybe via a separate midi track. You can get the MIDI Implementation chart for all of the Volcas from the Korg website - this lists which cc number controls which parameter. You'll have to draw this in / use a different controller to the Volca though as there's no MIDI out (unless you've modded yours).

    • @Freddd95
      @Freddd95 Před 5 lety +1

      I just checked out the midi implementation chart, but it didn´t really make any sense to me. I wonder why such a simple, fundamental thing has to be so complicated. Does anyone know specifically how to automate the different parameters (most importantly the velocity) on the Volca in logic pro? I tried searching all around the web, but strangely it seems like I am the only one not figuring this out @@OscillatorSink

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  Před 5 lety

      In the current version of Logic you just have to add region automation to the part you want to automate and select the CC number for velocity (41) and draw in your automation. I'm assuming that you're already otherwise comfortable with using Logic to control external gear here?
      I promise it isn't that complicated - but if you want to control midi devices it is worth spending a little time reading up on how midi works - specifically how notes are played and what cc messages are (and what they're used for). This'll help you better understand your gear, and possibly more importantly, help you troubleshoot issues when they arise!
      Here's a link which basically explains how to use the region automation for cc in logic:
