Why Devin Harris Is My Favorite Cutter + Bonus Content

- Devin Harris is a great cutter as he has splendid timing and anticipation to get easy layups. JJ Barea delivers terrific passes to Harris to fool defenders. Harris uses two unique cuts that are not very common in the NBA. I breakdown why they are effective and later cover changing sides in transition.

I'm just so thankful we can get this type of content for free on a regular basis. Thank you a lot coach D
I feel like cutting is a dying skill now. So many highschool kids just stand in the corner waiting for a catch n shoot situation even tho they have an open lane to the basket
BallinBoxer Um, because it’s HS, we talking about the NBA Rn!
@@fucktheravenspittsburghneb3119 but that's true in the nba today as well. It's nowhere near as bad, but still dying. My teammates just stand in the corner waiting to airball. I'm trying to study the art of off-ball movement, like Rip Hamilton or Devin Harris
they might be looking for the open corner J but i'm sure whoever has the ball and sees the open lane for cut would let em hear it. whenever theres a missed cut opportunity someone gets mad.
@@_Maxten
@@ch.illmatic you can check out mikal bridges right now. Really good cutter
A good cutter also needs a good passer
Exactly, and Barea is Dope
Barea is involved in every play haha great chemistry
I remember there was a time when devin harris and tony parker were considered the fastest players in the nba getting from one end of the court to the other, devin was a beast in new jersey and still a decent player today, this is great analysis of his playing style👍
yeah, he was even an all star. some people probably don't know
i love your work Coach Daniel. you helped me learned the game of basketball to a different level
Ibrahim Irfan now u only need to learn how to speak english
It's been fun watching Harris all these years, i feel old. I became a fan of the Mavs just as he was joining the team back in 2005, he was insanely fast and athletic. Still a good player all these years later.
Dennis Smith Jr. should learn from Devin Harris and cut more often
DSJ is going to have the ball. Wesley Matthews is the one should learn.
Gino
Still, Dwayne Wade is a great cutter, Dennis Smith jr can be one too. Stephen Curry is also really good oddball, can’t hurt to get a few more easy buckets.
Westbrook on the other hand is a brick without the ball lol, and I rather have Dennis Smith jr not become that.
Austin Kavrar Devin is a OLD PLAYER.😀😀😀
This is a tactic used by vets who are not skilled enough to beat you off the dribble.
DSJ has the ability to GET BUCKETS with ball in-hand.😀😀😀😀😀
Devin needs this style or there is no reason for him to be on the court.
DeAndre Page Devin did this in NJ when he was an all star. No excuse.
The changing sides part of the vid can be viewed as a defensive technique. By identifying your man when your team shoots can mitigate the advantage the off ball player generates. Thank you for the awesome vid!
I highly recommend subscribing to Zak Boisvert's CZcams channel, where he analyzes NBA concepts. czcams.com/channels/pWevDSy-jSMFkZj1dcjO5A.html
This is a great video. I like it because I am able to use both concepts at my pickup game on the weekends. I wish you could do more like these as there's not nearly as much stuff I can do from videos that require a more organised team to play with.
As a Mavs fan, Ive been waiting for your content to cover my team. I'm pleasantly surprised
the reason why (imo) NBA players don’t use it that much is because in transitions, they focused their mind to run and try to create a fast break while also keeping a good spacing. So they focused on attacking the gap, not reading the defender....
I love what you're doing Coach Daniel, keep it up! These types of content are helping ballers everywhere on how to approach/prepare on games.
Love these videos man! Keep it up.
Brilliant tutorial, thanks, coach.
Great video, already used the chop cut to score in transition after only watching the video a couple times
Thank you!
Happy New Year Daniel!
I loved this video thanks
Great video! Thanks
So the chop cut is basically a Spain PnR except the third man cuts in front of the roll man instead of screening the roll man's defender?
I definitely wouldn't think about it like that, but yes that is accurate.
wsxgfhccr Villanova college basketball = 2nd Cutter Motion Offense.😀😀😀
basically- and this is a killer play in lacrosse if you've ever watched that
Coach Daniel the 🐐
Harris is really fast, I think he had a record for dribbling baseline to baseline
Could you make a video on when and what scenarios to cut in? This video was super helpful
Doug McDermott's cuts are amazing as well
Keep it up coach.
great vid. thumbs up
Great Video.
2 situations: The first one has tall guys out front. Why do the defenders stay so tight? Are these guys shooters? It leaves the lane open, so the sideline cutter has a clear line to the basket. Second is the big guy cuts to the lane and magnetizes defenders to him, so the smaller cutter comes behind for an open pass & shot. The second is an odd play, because the magnetized player and the shooter are usually at the basket and corner, while here they're close.
I love the "cross the court on transition". It's so simple and easy for the other team to miss. Very neat! Off-the-ball offense can start that early and a lot of it is getting offensive space by simply running away from defenders. Different players could do it each time to avoid appearance of a pattern.
That play at 4:30 was pure basketball beauty
wow, an nba team needs to hire this guy to do their film sessions
Nah that's why teams have scouts and coaches. This is exactly how scouts and coaches break down film in the film room, only your watching highlights AND low lights.
Rip Hamilton, chris Mullin and ray Allen are the goats of cutting
Mr getbuckets DWade was pretty good as well
Devin harris is my favorite point guard in 2000sn ext to steve nash, he had great seasons with the mavs atthe earlystage of his career
I enjoy watching Avery Bradley off the ball in my opinion one of the best in the league, in terms of movement around screens, cutting back door and staying in good ready positions to score.
damn your video is 10 times better than coach nick
Great video Coach Daniel.
I think Joe Harris is also a great cutter.
Yep and an underrated player!
Ian Clark and Omri Casspi are great cutters as well. It would be nice if you make a video on them :)
Imagine Steph Curry chop cut in 3 pts
he always cut
I seriously thought it said "Hair Cuts"
Jackson Dowdle yo same
I agree. Him and Jj are so underrated. Love them both but too bad they never been in a contender outside mavs when they left. Put him on the cavs or gsw he'll be fucking useful 1000x more. But they wanted to stay in the mavs and mgmt are loyal to those two that's why they haven't been traded. Wish they get to play on contenders tho
That "Chop Cut" is also called "Drafting" as in NASCAR.
What a video Daniel😮
I still keep that new jersey jersey from Devin Harris !
coach daniel, who are your top 5 favorite cutters in the nba, so we know who to watch for?
Good question, off the top of my head, Harris, TJ Warren, Aaron Gordon, Avery Bradley, and Jrue Holiday
Oh man now he has the pass master Jokic to work with yes great trade D.
I didn't notice this.
Every time I watched the mavericks, there is at least one barea to harris in the 2nd quarter.
yessssssss ive been saying this
For the chop cut, I was wondering if it gets in the way of the rollman and what to do if the rollman gets the ball during the cut. Do we just pop out?
Yeah if the roll man gets it and doesn't have an immediate shot, the chop cut player should not cut but find space on the perimeter.
if the warriors ran this w KD as the big w steph and klay that would be unstoppable..............
Coach Daniel you're awesome. You don't coach anywhere? If not, that's a shame!!
I'm an aspiring coach, 19 years old.
@@coachdaniel8163 damn, only 19 (or 20 now)? Thats impressive!! Good luck in the future
@@ThaDreamMerchant Thanks! And 20 now.
devin harris was the biggest jock in 2k, 90% of the time all he did was aimlessly dribble even when he had a path to the basket he would do a stepback right in the middle of driving so that the defender could get back to him
Can you provide a link to the youtube channel you mentioned? Zach Bovair or something???
czcams.com/channels/pWevDSy-jSMFkZj1dcjO5A.htmlfeatured
Golovan14 thanks, but it produces an error
Zak Boisvert
Golovan14 got it, thanks
My favorite cutter is DDP
Yuri is the elite cutter
Zach brobeard- may u post his channel please
czcams.com/channels/pWevDSy-jSMFkZj1dcjO5A.html
Klay thompson is some cutter too, can we get something from him
THIS US TD BARRETT LMFAOOO
Giannis does the chop cut and you even mentioned it at your bucks breakdown
Yes but surprisingly he hasn't used it much this year, probably because he has the ball or is screening very often.
Coach Daniel he usually scores like that😂
Wait this guy still in the league?!
Watch more off ball Draymond and klay they both are elite
Mine is omri casspi
Great cutter needs a great passer
Chop cut = Draft cut!
whelp...he's joining the Warriors then. They love cutters.
The stop and go cut is frequently done by Javale Mcgee, Lebron throws him the pass almost every time
andre roberson should play like this
Make more videos like bballbreakdown your channel will be elite...........
Lebron
Klay
Two of the best cutters.
I want to cut more but I don’t trust people’s passing enough
Can I still be a good cutter if I'm slow :/
So there was this guy who use to wear a mask best cutter hands down even when he didn't score his constant motion caused so many problems.. R.I.P to those days
RIP Hamilton?
ITS STILL 2017 IN THIS COMMENT, HOW IS 2018 GOING?!
Barrea is the key.
He not cutting because of IQ he cutting because thats they play its in the play book !!!
Aegb
Wiggins could've been an elite cutter if he don't just stand in the perimeter when he don't have the ball.
imagine being an elite cutter😂😂
A lot of elite scorers are elite cutters
God I miss Dirk
Me too man
COACH Avery Bradley has the best cuts coach
honestly cutters are only as good as they are becasue of point gaurds. when i play pickup i usually never get passes when im open cuz everyone is ball hog
Karl Anthony-Towns yeah. People don’t know when to pass and go for dumb layups to look cool instead
yeah its hard being a 2way player in pickup. but you also have to learn to be more vocal. like point and signal to them that you're cutting or put your hands up and jump and say "YO!".
Some point guards are dumb, i'm good at cutting but shit, every point guard i seen in pickup don't know how to pass the ball properly to a cutter. That's one of the problems of basketball.
+da1 Laba Those are probably 2 guards who ended up playing point because its pickup.
Facts I hate that shit.. Ik I'm not a pg so I cut play d get boards n set nets on fire n when "pgs" don't pass I start shooting everything lol.. I can play point I just don't like 2
where is devin harris now i feel like hes better then george hill and alot of other current players
just so you know lakers always do that
Good video but the chop cut is basically just a curl cut.
shit like this is so basic to me, i literally make scrubs good scorers with this system at the gym
Facts
More like *hair* ris *cut*
Westbrook should learn to cut so he'd be of use off-ball rather than just standing outside the arc, especially since he isn't that much of a threat there. If the Mavs can run successful Harris cuts, there's no reason OKC can't since Westbrook is much faster and stronger, and a better finisher than Harris.
I always think that. Westbrook is not suited for a PG after all, but he isn't even suited for a 2 either because he can't cut or shoot efficiently, unless coach Donovan is responsible for this.
The most random video ever lol
Omri casspi >>
dont get it why this does never work in hooping with friends, everyones paying attention af
U don’t need to change sides if u can score on anyone like kobe harden or shoot from anywhere like curry lol
Their is no great passer if their is no great cutter and vice versa.
Why have the Dallas Mavericks been TRASH for the last 3 seasons 😎😎😎?
Great X's & O's coach.
Lack of raw talents. In the sports of basketball, athleticism can be more important than execution. That's a natural occurrence for the Mavs by making the playoffs for like 15 years and not landing draft steals like the Spurs.
15-16 is the last time the Mavs made the playoffs, but with a lineup of D-Will, Wes Matthews, Parsons, Dirk and Zaza. They also have 3 vet guards (Barea, Devin Harris and Felton) and Charlie V off the bench. Almost all of them are above 30 back then, you can see there is no future for this team. Not even a single exciting young talent.
Somehow Rick Carlisle pull that off, making up for the lack of talents through execution and experienced. But not the next year when they get nobody to protect the paint and Dirk get injured again, they have made the most out of Harrison Barnes but he is also a limited player. Then they decided to buyout D-will and Bogut and start tanking. Now they have 2 exciting young talents (DSJ and Doncic).
nothing special - guy must be from Texas
