Why Devin Harris Is My Favorite Cutter + Bonus Content

  • Devin Harris is a great cutter as he has splendid timing and anticipation to get easy layups. JJ Barea delivers terrific passes to Harris to fool defenders. Harris uses two unique cuts that are not very common in the NBA. I breakdown why they are effective and later cover changing sides in transition.

the reason why (imo) NBA players don’t use it that much is because in transitions, they focused their mind to run and try to create a fast break while also keeping a good spacing. So they focused on attacking the gap, not reading the defender....

2 situations: The first one has tall guys out front. Why do the defenders stay so tight? Are these guys shooters? It leaves the lane open, so the sideline cutter has a clear line to the basket. Second is the big guy cuts to the lane and magnetizes defenders to him, so the smaller cutter comes behind for an open pass & shot. The second is an odd play, because the magnetized player and the shooter are usually at the basket and corner, while here they're close.
I love the "cross the court on transition". It's so simple and easy for the other team to miss. Very neat! Off-the-ball offense can start that early and a lot of it is getting offensive space by simply running away from defenders. Different players could do it each time to avoid appearance of a pattern.

Westbrook should learn to cut so he'd be of use off-ball rather than just standing outside the arc, especially since he isn't that much of a threat there. If the Mavs can run successful Harris cuts, there's no reason OKC can't since Westbrook is much faster and stronger, and a better finisher than Harris.

Lack of raw talents. In the sports of basketball, athleticism can be more important than execution. That's a natural occurrence for the Mavs by making the playoffs for like 15 years and not landing draft steals like the Spurs.
15-16 is the last time the Mavs made the playoffs, but with a lineup of D-Will, Wes Matthews, Parsons, Dirk and Zaza. They also have 3 vet guards (Barea, Devin Harris and Felton) and Charlie V off the bench. Almost all of them are above 30 back then, you can see there is no future for this team. Not even a single exciting young talent.
Somehow Rick Carlisle pull that off, making up for the lack of talents through execution and experienced. But not the next year when they get nobody to protect the paint and Dirk get injured again, they have made the most out of Harrison Barnes but he is also a limited player. Then they decided to buyout D-will and Bogut and start tanking. Now they have 2 exciting young talents (DSJ and Doncic).
