PS4 Slim - How Hot Does It Get?

    We test the PS4 Slim to see how hot it gets...we also test the power consumption and noise level.
    We start by testing the PS4 right out of the box without it even being set up yet. We then test it at the dashboard at idle, then we play a game for about 20 minutes and retest the temperature, decibels and watts.
    Another test we do in this video is testing the PS4 before the thermal paste is replaced and after it's been replaced with brand new thermal paste.
    We find that the readings are very similar before we replace the thermal paste and after. This shows that there is not a strong reason to replace the thermal paste right away.

    The reason why it's "hotter" after repaste is because it's more efficient at transferring heat. While the heatsink increases in temperature, the actual die will be cooler as it's more efficient in transferring heat, resulting in lower noise. This is not the correct way to measure the temperature of course. It should be done only in Celsius and the die needs to be measured with a thermal probe on the back of the PCB (still a bit inaccurate). Obviously this is an old video and an old
    TronicsFix, so can't blame too much.

    I'm still shocked at all the stupidity filling the comments section for this video. Measuring the temperature of the air forced out from inside the console by the exhaust fan is not an accurate measure of the core temps for the CPU and GPU. The PS4 slim could be more efficient at removing heat than the older PS4 models and the xbox one which would place more heat at the exhaust. The console is smaller so the chassis will feel warmer to the touch as heat is transferred from the circuitry to heat sinks, and then removed by the fans. The only way to know how well the PS4 Slim cools would be to measure the core temps, any other measurement is not an accurate way to assess the efficiency of the system. I don't care how hot the air is that's being shot out the back, or how hot the case gets so long as the components are kept cool.

    Great test as always. So Slim temperature is on par with Pro, seems pretty hot machine. 39 db seems a little optimistic to me, i misured on Slim 45-50db peak on BOIII and MGS V menu, those are extreme examples, but is indicative. Overall is less noisy than fat matte model.

    One test I did, when I brought my ps4 slim first time was played online Foxtel for 48hrs. Ps4 stayed warm and yes little heat at the bottom of the console but it never overheated. 2nd test was full day GAME play on Saturday from 8am to 12am midnight - 18hrs. Never overheated. Other then that, console turned out pretty awesome.

    I think its obvious that changing the thermal compound makes a difference. The Temperature increase shows a higher efficiency of heat transfer also the lower Db and lower Wattage show the fan spinning slower and drawing less power. Does anyone think this is plausible????

    • @Kolgrim1988

    My PS4 slim gets worryingly hot in rest mode. It's just as hot as if it's playing a AAA video game and it's like this for hours (I have 1.5Mb of internet). My old Xbox One didn't get as hot as it while playing games and it always returned to cold when in instant on mode. Most of the Xbox One is designed poorly IMO, however in this case the cooling of the PlayStation is a much bigger oversight. An oversight that may make me return my PS4.

    just throwing this out there,which this is mainly common sense,the best way to reduce the heat of your console is making sure it's in a cool open space,well clear of other heat producing electronics.2.you'll want either a stand to elevate it horizontally or a vertical stand,optimally with a fan built into it.placing it flat tends to heat the surface area,in effect,creating ambient heat.3.have a fan on the back to pull out the excess heat,preferably one that doesn't need to be plugged directly into the power supply.those tend to,over time,burn out either your power supply or your motherboard.trust me on that one,I've had to replace both in prior consoles more than a few times.simple solutions and also cost effective

    Very helpful video. Thank you. I just got my PS4 Slim an I've noticed the fan gets noisy after maybe 30-45 minutes. But it doesn't stay that way. It goes up and down. Is it normal?

    their is a problem with your test the first ones were done on the table the second set were taken with it sitting on a box the table has less heat dissipation ans more sound amplification then the box so in the second set you should have noticeably lower numbers even without anything being done to the console

    My ps4 slim used to get hotter when it was brand new, but now, I can hear the fan spinning faster and it doesn't get as hot anymore. It just gets a little warm and that's all. When it was new, the fan was almost completely silent and my ps4 got hotter. It have had it for about 1,5 years.

      Is your PS4 Slim still quiet though? I got mine brand new back in November, & it’s the quietest console I’ve ever owned. Just wondering how yours is holding up?

    My PS4 Slim is in a very dust-free environment and it is 9 months old... but It gets very hot from the bottom and especially the glass on which it stands is really hot, i don't have numbers and it is not painfully to touch... is this normal?
    It has never shutdown, not even after 6 hours of gaming and the fan is quit most of the time, only in graphical intense gameplay moments like cutscenes in The Witcher 3 the fan is kicking in.

    Is this console still overheating or has Sony addressed it and fixed it? So far all I've read is its overheating issues from fairly reliable sources , but nothing addressing that it has been resolved. I bought the PS4 Pro on launch day , and since then up until last weekend I've had to return 3 of them do to numerous problems. Does Sony have a working console out right now or what??? I was thinking of switching over to Xbox in complete frustration, but I've spent too much money on games and bought the 1 year membership, so I'd end up losing too much, so I'm stuck having to get one of these consoles.

    there seems to be a difference in temperature on the ps5 when it’s compared horizontally to vertically, is it the same with the ps4 slim?

  • @RAZORREVOLUTION1
    @RAZORREVOLUTION1 Před 7 lety +1

    My PS4 slim (bought a week and a half ago) gets very warm to the touch at the bottom and the top of the unit, specifically the top right-hand corner, when placed horizontally. I have also noticed that the table unit that it's placed on also gets warm to the touch as a direct consequence of having the PS4 Slim on top of it, thermal conduction and all that. I hasten to add that I'm also referring to the bottom of the table unit that the PS4 slim is placed on, and it's 2cm thick!
    So in making something aesthetically pleasing, albeit relative to the individual, Sony seems to have overlooked heating issues. Very disconcerting.

    • @Tronicsfix
      @Tronicsfix  Před 7 lety +2

      These create heat. It's normal. They are going to feel hot and they are made to handle it. It's normal for it to be hot to the touch.
