  • See why I don’t use the mason jar lids shown or reuse mason jar lids. Mason jar lids get compromised when sold with the jars in flats, in my opinion. It’s not worth losing jars of canned goods just to save a few dollars on new lids.
    The compromise in the lid compound resembles lids that have been already used for canning. Basically I feel it’s like reusing mason jar lids. I do not refuse mason jar lids.
    Reusing mason jar lids is really not a good idea unless that’s all you have. Understandably, reuse happened a lot during the pandemic because lids were hard to find. The new mason jar lids in the twelve jars flats look like they are already used.

    I use used lids for the drys I've put in jars. I put flour, sugar, rice, etc in canning jars to keep them away from critters, like mice and flour moths. I leave the rings on so mice cannot try to remove lids from flour, rice and other foods mice prefer.

      I’ve been reusing lids multiple times and have no issues with sealing. And to think of all the perfectly good lids I’ve tossed out after a single use over the last 51 years! I could cry.

      Arnie, I reuse my lids. Just did a batch of Great Northern beans 2 lids had been used 2 times previously and 1 was on its second time. All sealed.

      @@efzapp7 : I’m not having any issues with lids not sealing. Old lids or newly purchased lids either which I’ve also used multiple times. Only had one fail and I reused it again and it sealed. Still using it so it must have been a bit of siphoning. I use one and a half inch headspace and siphoning and failure to seal is extremely rare.

    They are perfectly fine to use from the new jars like that. Mine seal 100% everytime from the new cases of jars. If it wasn't they wouldn't sell them together.

    I reuse lids that have been water bathed 3-4 times if they aren’t bent, creased, or part of the sealing compound isn’t missing. I reuse lids after pressure canning at least one more time. I’ve never had any issues. My dad and grandmother always did the same.

    Never had a failure. Just canned 24 jars today using new jars and lids. I also warm my lids and re-use lids. Send my your lids!

      Lea Anne, I am just starting to reuse the lids for pressure canning. Everyones telling not to reuse the lid. Can you share your experience? How often are you reusing the same lid? Do you write on the lid how many times it got used? Do you end up losing some of the vacuum in those jars after a while? Thanks Lea Anne.

      @@LouiseMGrenier No I don't mark them and ‼I only reuse lids when I have no new ones on hand‼. I save all lids that are in good shape since I also preserve dehydrated foods in jars. Look the rubber, test to see if it is flexible(fingernail test). Don't bend the lid when removing from jars. Bubbles or flaking of the white on the bottom of the lids is bad. Rust anywhere on the lid is bad. Lid failures in my kitchen are ALWAYS my fault for missing an issue with the jar or the lids. Another thing I do with both old and new lids is to soak them in hot water, this helps to soften the rubber/silicone a little before adding them to the jar. The water is warmed on the stove until I see little bubbles and steam, then removed from the heat and add lids. Can I say you'll never have a lid failure? No. It happens even with new ones. To test using used lids I suggest canning water when you have a open spot in your canner. I've been doing this for years. An empty jar takes up the same amount of space in your storage as a full jar of water. I've been canning water with used lids for about 10 years and haven't had a lid failure, 10 yr old water on my pantry shelf. Hubby thinks I'm nuts but if I need those jars for food they can be emptied.

    They used to either put them upside down on the jar or lids and rings together in a flat box on top of the jars. I still use mine after soaking in very hot water and they usually always seal.

    I save the lids that come with jars and I use them on jars I don't seal. Like jars of overnight oats or a jar of citrus peels soaking in vinegar.
    Honestly, until this year, I'd only had 1 lid fail out of hundreds. This year, I've already had 3 new lids from boxes fail.

    I have always questioned that myself. Glad to see someone talking about it and I have only canned a few things. I have also noticed when I go to take some of them off a new jar I have had to pry them off which means their compromised.

      I canned pickled stuff with 1X or 2X used lids during the great mason jar and lid shortage and never had an issue. I did warm the lids in hot water.
      I’m not suggesting anyone else should reuse lids. I’m just relating my experience.

      @@useful.knowledge it makes one think. The jars might have been setting in a hot warehouse somewhere. I just bought 2 dozen regular lids and 2 dozen wide mouth lids by Yes, I Can. I had a failure with them. I made 15 pints of salsa and one didn’t seal. The sealant wasn’t applied evenly In the groove.

    Thank you for pointing out this anomaly with the lids. As with all preservation activities, this shows another great reason for inspecting each and every component, before and during your processes.
    As stated by others, there is no reason to discard these lids, they are still very useful for dry and/or vacuum seal operations.

    Thank you for the information. You're saving lives. A family member sent us several jars of canned goods. When I examined the jars they had never sealed. We couldn't use the food.
    Be careful canning or you can actually die from mistakes. Plan careful start early gauge your time and on tomatoes use all caution they can be deadly. Overtime in your water bath process.

    Went to the store a couple of days ago and the new boxes of lids were over $8.00 ea. I'm glad I've been buying extra boxes of lids the past 3 years. Personally, I've not experienced a problem with the lids from my jars. I probably will now that you've brought it up.

    Wow! Baught some Mason jars 3 weeks ago and noticed when I opened the jars, the lids had edentations on them. I decided to buy all new lids and just use the rings. Common sense and God is good that 2 weeks later He shows me this video! Thanks!

    Thank you so very much, I've had a few not seal recently and all my lids were brand new but when I pulled them from the box many were sealed to each other. This was probably the culprit and I will pay better attention plus get another thing of new lids plus inspect those that were sealed together. Truly appreciate this, have a wonderful weekend :-)

      Thanks! That’s exactly why I posted this. I never lose a jar but I have people email me about why they lose jars. It sounds like they do everything correctly so I wonder about those lids.

    Older folks always reused and boiled lids as long as they weren't damaged. Never had an issue.

      I bring a small pan of water up to a boil then remove from the stove. I drop my lids in and wait a minute or two. You'll see the seal puff back up. Then when I put it on a jar, feel that it's completely centered. You can kinda feel it sticks a little. Then put rings on finger tight. I had a lot of failures with these new sure tight ball lids until I did that. No failures since.

      @@bh4396 no being damp doesn’t mess up the seal. The biggest causes of failure for me, (with these new cheaper lids) is a couple reasons. The first important thing is to look at your jar. I’ve had a jar that had an imperfection on the top where the seal goes. Maybe a tiny bump or nick, so run your finger around it to check for anything like that. Then wipe your jars well making sure there’s no food or oil on where it’ll seal. Then I look at the lid to make sure it has enough of the seal material. I’ve seen a couple that weren’t very good. I get a pan of hot water and drop the lid in letting the seal swell just a little and to let any indentation from packaging smooth out. When I put the lid on the jar I can kinda feel that it will stick a little. Put your ring on and sit a finger on top of the lid while twisting ring on. Once the jar starts to move while twisting down, I only go about a quarter turn or less to keep lid on. Don’t over tighten. Then put in canner. I still get a failure here or there but I plan my meals to eat whatever does fail. I never had this issue with older lids so don’t be hard on yourself. You’ll get the hang of it. Having good rubber in the lid is important. I’ve noticed some generic brands can be better, but not always.

    So glad you posted this. I live in 6,000 altitude and all my lids from new boxes are completely sealed. In fact it is kind of scary to take off as some have popped and come off flying. I now do it away from my face or body. I am waiting for someone to get hurt (which I hope does not happen) and sue the companies that do this, just to save a few bucks. Companies use to take pride in their company. Now it is how much they can make it seems. So anyway have to buy new lids. That way same companies with the jars make more money for sure. But it is what it is, and my canning is to important to me.

    Also never tighten the ring after the jar has sealed it will break the seal. Many times people do that and they wonder why their stuff spoils the ring will be loose just leave it alone. After a day or two you can take the rings off and reuse them with other lids. I have canned for many years I’m 75 years old I can strawberry syrup the other day and they all sealed. I also save my pickle jars and reuse them. Sometimes the lid smells like pickles so I use the baking soda to Soak the lids and then rinse them. The pickles smell will be gone and you can use the lids and jars over and over

    The more recent lids are inferior to the older lids. I bought ball dome lids from the 1989s I happened upon. They are heavier and there was a more generous amount of sealant.
    The lids and screw bands were sealed separately in former dacades and not put on the jars. and this indentation thing could not happen!
    Inspect new jars and lids very carefully. Ball quality has declined and to a point some gave up canning because of it.
    Sad situation!

    If you’re buying new lids you might as well invest in reusable lids like harvest guard. It will save you money really quick.

    Thankyou for showing that..I didn't realize that..I have found that if I don't make my water hot &sook my lids they may not seal..if you have lids with white rings..I use those only for water bath,not pressure canning..they buckle under pressure and may not seal... everyone be safe🙏🙏🇺🇲🇺🇲

    Great video. 👍🏻 I like to use forjars lids myself. They always seal. I had a whole flat of kerr jars and the lids were all duds. Now I just use those compromised lids for storing dry goods.

    So happy I found this video. I’m new to canning and have had good success but this may be why I get a failure or two. I will try with new lids. I’m new but very careful to the point of reviewing the process before I start to make sure I’m doing it right.

    I have seen that and also have stored brand new jars and lids in a shed outside in the heat. I have always used the lids and thought they might fail for the reasons you state. I have never had a jar fail to seal. You are being careful and that's a good idea! But for me, it's been ok so far!

    TY so much for this info! Have dabbled in 'canning' past few yrs, & see this as an important bit of advice. Wish l lived closer to my family, because nearly all of them garden & can their own goods. Husband's family seem to think everything comes from a store...lol.
    l use compromised lids on jars of goods, which do not need a 'canned' seal, (i.e. dry foods, sewing supplies, extra veggie seeds, etc.) For lids w/pinch of rust &/or jars w/tiny chips, l store smaller items in garage, which tend to end up having no specific place, (i.e. extra nuts, bolts, screws, washers, nails, etc). Have made a couple of hanging mobiles to help keep garden goodies safe.
    Would love to hear ideas, for any other extra uses, for compromised lids.

    Thanks Jamie. I reuse those lids to vacuum pack dehydrated foods because I run through those fairly quickly. Also, once I open that vac-pac jar, I will toss that lid. God Bless and stay safe.

      Hi. Thanks for the comments! I’ve had them “seal” and ping in the back seat of my truck while going home from the store. I guess the a/c hit them. The way I look at is if I’m putting all this work in to can stuff, I want the lids to be pristine. I hope you have great canning season!

    I couldn’t figure out this odd pinging noise that was happening all summer. It turns out it was the lids pinging from unopened cases on a shelf lol. I thought it was something electrical lmao.

    Those jars and lids were obviously shipped where they got pretty darn hot to have sone that - if the indentation isn’t present I would still use them. But otherwise I would use foe dey dehydrated storage

      Thanks! I’ve canned so many jalapeños this year. They just keep on producing. For the open kettle method just make sure you get the hot jalapeños in the hot jar and the lids on quickly. They seal every time.

      Very true! They are coming back into the stores. We’ve got them at the local grocery stores as well as the larger ones like Publix. Also for the past two years, I bought mine off EBay.

    I've noticed that bringing home cases of jars in the heat of summer seals lids on my way home! I hear them popping!

    The jars and lids used to come packaged so differently. If Ball/Kerr are cheating us, like I believe they are, I won't support them by buying boxes of their lids. I have been buying reusable lids. Next time, I will buy ForJar lids. The compound is so much thicker. You may want to check them out. There are discount codes on some of the other channels.

    I kept several dozen new jars in a hot attic, then moved them to a less hot garage before I used them. The lids were sticky like yours. I also throw the metal lids in hot water with my tattler lids when I'm canning. The seals rarely fail. I'd suggest you raise your concerns with the manufacturer, they might be able to address the issue and put your mind at ease. (please post the results if you do this.)
    This is an excellent topic to put out, as the more we understand the process the more effective we are at canning. Thanks for bringing it up!

    back in about 2014 there was the first (of many) lid shortage scares...at that time I found a Ball Lid seller on Ebay and I bought several gross' of lids...(thousands of them) at the time I thought it was stupid but "just in case"....I am still using those lids but am running low however I do get new lids from time to time from people, picking up on sales, buying flats of jars (like you show in your video)...I can tell you with 100% certainty and my 30 years of canning experience that the current lids are thinner and have less adhesive (both in width and depth and the rubber itself seems to have changed). I still rarely have failures with my 10 year old lids but I do have issues with the newer Ball lids. I even have some 40+ year old Kerr lids (with the gray rubber) and they are even thicker than my 10 year old bunch I bought. I did just get some new lids from Tattler 'disposable' lid, their answer to Ball lids shotages from a few years back. They too weighless and are thiner than the OLD lids but they are just as good as the currently made lids. We'll see. All that said, I do agree with your assesment that the lids which have been on the jar tops are used...they look like it and they act like it. Ball says they are ok to use, which is a head scratcher as it seems to say to me that used lids are ok to use?!? For now I keep them for dry storage but if I had to then I would use them and just keep an eye on the seals. Thanks for the vid. I agree.

      Hi. Something was different. Since I open kettle can, I get to hear the ping of the lid when it seals. The lids bought in 2020, had a different sound when they sealed. Almost like a thud instead of a ping. The ones that I bought last fall that I’m using now, are actually pinging now. Agree with

    In south Alabama at Wal Mart ball jar lids are nearly $7.00 a box of 12.

      Yeah they are not cheap but for about $.60 each is why I will by new ones instead of possibly losing a jar. How is LA? I miss my old stomping grounds.

    I've had that complaint about those lids that come on the jars. But, I can't bring myself to throw them away. I usually leave them off for a couple of weeks then put them in really hot water. Then, I use them on things like applesauce.... never would I use them on meat, or something expensive.

    I USE THEM!!!
    Because I live over 6000' in elevation all of mine seal because of the pressure FROM HIGHER ELEVATION when I buy a flat that comes with lids. I always use them and have never had them fail

      Hi. Yes, initially they cost a little over $1.00 each when purchased in a flat. However, you can use those jars for 10-20 years. I had to buy two new flats of pint jars this years because I decided to can larger jars of pickled jalapeños. That’s the first flats that I’ve bought in a few years. Sometimes I have to buy new flats when my friends and family don’t return my mason jars:

    I just bought another flat of jars which has the rings very loosely attached. None of them seemed like the flat top was stuck. The other flats had the rings tight and were very tightly shrink wrapped. I think the shrinkwrap along with hot warehouses causes the tighter rings to do what they.are supposed to do...seal!

    I have used them for years with no problem, I do inspect them.. and I primary only preasure can.. but I have been canning over 50 years now.. and I have never had one not seal due to it being off new jar.. frankly I can't remember when I had one not seal in last few years.. and I have stuff.. in jars several years old.. so even shelf life has been fine.. I do for sure see what your talking about.. but in practical use the work fine for preasure canning.

    I needed saw a kid with an indentation like that mine always look like the ones you pulled out one the side but I agree I wouldn’t use something with an indentation already

    They use to pack the lids in a flat box that were under the jars wonder why they stopped that, thanks and a great job for letting us know

      Jars used to come in a full box, not a shallow flat. There was room to pack lids/ rings in a flat box under the jars. Miss those cardboard boxes to store my jars

    Your video reminded me of the Walmart brand sold about 8 years ago. Though I wasn’t canning back then, I did buy jars air crafts and the lids and rings were packaged separately. They were not attached to the jars. That packaging is no longer used but, I’m thinking for your reasoning that is why they were separate at that time.

    I take the new lids off the jar, inspect, wash and place is very hot water. It’s a silicon product and once warmed they go back to their original shape with no issue. The only time I have had failures was when there was a jar chip I didn’t notice or I didn’t clean sufficiently. And I re use as well. I can 1000 jars a year.

    I take mine off, but them in a baggy and normally a couple of days later, the rubber has come back. I still dump my lids in hot water before sealing. Yesterday, had 1 lid that did not want to sit on the jar, it was not used.
    I have seen some bent lids from the flat of jars and have also gotten a couple of jars that after 2 tries of not sealing, the jars were not flat. Water test with finger confirmed my suspicion.

    I had a box of ball jars that had lids with the indentation in them. I didn’t notice until I had used them on 8 pints of pickled relish. None of them sealed so I had to empty the jars and re-can them.

    I use tattler gaskets on all of my metal lids now. You can order just the gaskets I got 100 small mouth for 25 dollars and 100 wide mouth for 28 dollars. Just place the gasket over the one on the metal canning lid. They are reusable. I got mine from harvest Guard. RoseRed Homstead has a video on how to do this

    I have a question.
    I have Harvest Guard reusable lids, can I can jelly/jam with them as you do it ? The flip and flip back ?
    Since they are a hard plastic with a rubber ring used to seal, will it work ?

      Hi. I have never used those. This may sound weird but you can easily try this. Boil some water and follow my normal canning process. Can the water and see if it seals correctly and stays sealed for a few days. Please let me know if they works

    The jars from the store often get hot during storage, which causes the sealing effect once the jar cools. Those lids I check to see how badly the compound is distorted. I will reuse lids for my dry storage if the enamel isn't scratched, if the lid isn't bent and if the 'gasket' is still flexible. HOWEVER, I will Never reuse a lid from meat jars.

    The only lids I have a problem with is Pur. High failure of not sealing. It was all I could find with the shortage last summer but never again.
