The 2023 Toyota GR86 Is Affordable, Fun, And Quite Possibly The Last Of Its Kind...

- Sports cars that are fun and affordable are getting harder and harder to find, especially 2-door coupes designed to be lightweight, nimble, and tail happy. Ford's Mustang gets the headlines of course, but the GR86 is a very different sports car and it exists almost in a category of one... Depending on what you want to drop in the same bucket of course...

The future is almost certainly huge heavy EVs, crossovers, and EV crossovers. So enjoy one of these light weight RWD manual sports cars while you still can!
Sad but likely true. -Travis
You’ve fallen into the same thinking trap as everyone else with the “turbo” thing. A) The WRX engine won’t fit without raising the engine height which would necessitate a complete redesign and mess up the Porsche beating CoG. B) The rest of the driveline is not rated beyond 300nm so it would need a new gearbox and diff, and it would gain weight meaning bigger brakes and bigger rims and all of this would cost more money. And then you’ve missed the entire point of the car. To be a small, lightweight, affordable, sports car. It’s close to perfect (for the money) as it is.
What? The drive train can handle a wrx motor easily. And what would bigger wheels do other than nothing?
@@subiesnacks8446 The BRZ gearbox is rated to 300nm. Toybaru would never bolt an engine producing 400nm to that gearbox…because unlike someone adding a turbo in their backyard, Toybaru have to provide a drivetrain warranty! Toybaru have no front engine, rear drive, manual gearboxes in their product portfolio, and would have needed to produce a special gearbox for a low volume sports car. Never going to happen.
So true
I hear a lot of people saying that the 86 has more power than the Miata implying it has an advantage but they don’t mention power to weight ratios and how they similar they are in acceleration. Overall they are both fantastic drivers cars and you can’t go wrong with either.
"someone my size"... What is your size?
Sorry, 6’1” -Nick
My only complaint is the soulless motor the car has. Power is fine, the rest of the car is fantastic, but it needs something like a K20Z3 in there to boost the joy
Auto Buyers Guide | Alex on Autos, I loved this video so much, I had to hit the like button!
If this car only had 140hp I'd still be smiling ear to ear when driving it. Most classic sports cars from back in the day were around 100hp and super light. Having 6.1 or even 6.8sec 0-60mph is as fast or faster than most muscle cars from the 60's. Magnum PI's 308GTS Ferrari was in the high 6 to low 7 second range 0-60mph with a 3.0L V8
This car and the Miata are incredible value and performance. Wish I could get one.
This is a 2023. I assume the are discounting the 2024 models?
I laughed at the double amputee comment. Maybe im a terrible person but it was hilarious to me
I felt terrible saying it but it’s the unfortunate truth lol -Nick
I'm an amazing person and I though it was hilarious as well, you're all good bro.
@@fighter835 thank you for the words of affirmation
Miata has less HP but it's also MUCH lighter which is kind of what you want in a sports car, and performance is very close.
Supra is the most fun to drive car out there . Especially now a manual
I was with you until the 160+ foot breaking.
The drag coefficient of my 1997 Crown Victoria is .34 .. it's a whale of a family sedan and they did pretty damn good apparently
161 ft stopping distance? That's harsh.
Apologies, that should have been 116ft.
I had two FRS, one auto, one manual for nearly a decade, despite replacing them with a GR Corolla which I love, I'm still itching to be in a GR86. Love the weight, seating position, inputs and feel..
Also you missed that the backseats can be folded down by pulling on the backseat straps accessible from the trunk 😅 much easier than going around
Can’t wait for Toyota’s new MR2
Great job! Love the GR86
Thanks! I enjoyed my time with it
-Nick
Greta job on the review. Love the GR86 and its price point. Everyone else has left the affordable($30k) rwd sport car segment. The new Z was a huge disappointment and its pricing makes it very unattractive. Very happy with Toyota/Subaru have done with the GR86. I think this car has the perfect amount of power
"Behind me, we have the 2023 GR86"
Er, it's in front of you
Nick, Next time, if there is a next time, we can expect a Toyota being re-badged as a Subaru.
Nice Subaru review
Glad I'm not the only one whose brain autocompletes GR "Corolla" LOL
If you’re gonna give the drag coefficient you need to give some others for perspective. That’s not one that gets used very often.
Right. Rewatching I thought the same thing. Next time I’ll keep that in mind, thanks! -Nick
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I didn’t phrase that as delicately as I should have. I’m glad you didn’t take it poorly, but I’m not happy with my wording. Sorry about that! Thanks for taking poorly worded constructive criticism well!
That really wasn’t such an ordeal to fold down the rear seat back and considering that you’ll probably never have passengers back there you could just leave it down forever.
Keeping the seats up should help keep the cabin a little quieter. -Travis
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Likely yes but even down would be quieter than a top down MX-5.😁
Interesting that you think the GR86 has a better interior than the Miata. I think the Miata looks better and more upscale and other car journalists seem to agree.
A list of prices and specs is not a review
Forgot these cars were still being made
You gotta get out more to places that celebrate sports cars like a track, autocross or even car show. Plenty of them around in such enthusiast circles.
It's not "behind" you though... 0:01
One hit by a Cybertruck, your dead.
I owned a BRZ and an STI in passed but would not buy Subaru again as become a granny car . GR 86 be my choice
GR86 and the BRZ are nearly identical.
It’s the same car..made on the same line
I might have to eat my words now that Toyota having so many engine problems
@@Gadfly2025 What does that have to do with your initial comment or the two replies to it?
@@ALMX5DP I actually owned a BRZ when they came out . I bought the Subaru version but Subaru is getting to be such an old lady car again I would not want to identity with Subaru . The same I would buy Hyundai over Kia .
As far as T86 there are differences in suspension, front and rear clips and interior. Yup same boxer motor
At 5:56, "who can fit inthe back seat is a "double amputee"". Very crude comment.
Alex is great. But the secondary hosts on this channel are really not up to par.
Agree with you. It was a really off-putting comment.
The goal is to improve each video and gain any knowledge from Alex we can.
Cheers,
-Nick
Agree. Not everyone has the personality or delivery to pull of such jokes.
life is crude, how soft can you be?
The interior, especially that infotainment, is such an afterthought.
Does it really matter when the purpose of the car is driving engagement and fun?
I agree. In this specific vehicle, the infotainment for me isn’t the most important feature. It’s nice to have functionality but the driving dynamics far make up for any shortcomings of the tech
-Nick
Please Toyota add another 50HP
I’d be fine with a subtraction of about 200lbs of weight. Remove the back seats, lightweight front buckets, wheels, brakes, and exhaust. That and a good suspension and they are absolute beasts on a twisty backroad.
Size 13 feet ooh la la
Please re examine the barking test 161ft is not acceptable
Oops I meant to say 116, thanks for catching that.
-Nick
The Z would be a competitor as well although slightly more upscale.
I would consider the Z a pretty significant step above. -Travis
Do mirrors tilt down when put in reverse?
I think the kid did well...looking to more reviews
Thanks! Goal is to improve each video. More videos coming soon -Nick
Bring back Alex!
He’s not gone don’t worry. He’s just helping grow the next generation of auto reviewers
Cheers,
-Nick
I feel like you worked hard to not be negative on some aspects of this car. It wasn’t slightly noisier. It was noisy. And the trunk is worthless. 160 feet to break from 60 is ridiculous, so yes it needs better brakes and stock tires, even though it is wet. And you rated as even with the MX-5 in efficiency, but it gets 25% fewer miles per gallon. I always look forward to honest reviews from Alex on autos, but I feel like this was hedging too much.
Elantra N anyone?
I also love the Elantra N. Although they are both different driving dynamics given FWD vs RWD, they both have spots in their respective class
-Nick
