What Are Book Royalties?

  • What are book royalties? When an author is traditionally published, they are paid through book royalties. In exchange for the rights to the book, the publisher pays the author a set amount per every copy that’s sold, based on the retail price of the book.
    Royalty rates vary depending on the publisher, but in this video Book Launchers' founder and author, Julie Broad will share what those common payouts are, what the book royalties look like for self-published authors, and answer other questions about getting paid as an author from book sales.

    The main reason I focus on self publishing is because of the information learned in one of your other videos. You’re still responsible for a great deal of the marketing when going the tradition route. So important.

      Jon for the WIN. The Publishers do not do one thing that you the author cannot. Jon IDs the main issue - the author STILL has to market their work. SO what good is the Publisher? I had one even in so-called self-publishing, wherein they had this program. LOL - on a $12 book I would've gotten about 78 cents. The so-called Retailer who only took mouse clicks on their website and never saw or touched a book would have gotten... SIX DOLLARS. Nah - no way. (Insert string of cartoon "cussing" emojis here)

    Why let a publisher take their cut of our work, and then limit what we can do with it in the future? Thanks for spelling this out.

  • @marthatettenborn-ketocance3391

    Hiring a self-publishing service like Book Launchers is an initial outlay of money, but it pays itself back in the quality of the final product and how that can open doors to other opportunities, as Julie says. And you retain control over the entire project. That really mattered to me.

    Great video. I really enjoyed the comparison between regular and self-publishing especially the math. The mathematical comparison between the two options was definitely an eye opener. Add to those startling numbers that you keep the rights to your book and under most circumstances it seems that self publishing should have no problem coming out far ahead of the traditional method. By the way wearing a crown when discussing royalties sounds like fun, but I imagine that wearing a crown while receiving royalties would be even more fun!
    Thank you for the great video and I hope that you have a great day!

    In the end, control of content is everything. Publishers can be fickle. They might bury your book baby (Julie's great word) and make it impossible for you to do anything about it, because they have the copyright.

    @ffllaammeerr Před 3 lety +1

    Wow - I never realized how little you may earn with royalties. When I death with art galleries, they would usually keep 30 to 50 percent of the sale, and that seemed high. Seeing only 5 percent of the price is admittedly a little discouraging. Self-Publish!

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  Před 3 lety

      Yes people really overvalue what a traditional publisher brings to the table. Interestingly, on a forum I'm a part of, there were a handful of authors that have done both traditional and self-publishing and they all universally agreed that traditional publishing was actually more work too!! There were a lot of things the publisher required them to do that they didn't have to do when they self-published.

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  Před 3 lety

      Hmm you mean do an offset run and set yourself up as a vendor? We haven't done that because of the hassle factor but I know a few authors that have. They get their print costs below $3/book which can lead to a lot more profits in the long run but there's a big hassle factor in that process.
