Tyler Childers: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • April 11, 2018 | Lars Gotrich -- Tyler Childers writes songs about hard lives and hard love with direct heart. You meet these characters - some from his own life, some not - and feel like you know them, but there's always another layer to uncover with each listen, carved by his coarse and soulful Kentucky drawl.
In his performance at the Tiny Desk, we meet a miner and the consequences of addiction ("Nose on the Grindstone"), Childers' own in-laws ("This is a song about the first time I got snowed in with my in-laws," he says, expecting a laugh, and giving it a beat. "It's not a blues song, it's a love song"), and the love of his life, "Lady May." Only the closing song comes from last year's Purgatory, his proper debut record, produced by Sturgill Simpson. The others are regular features in Childers' live repertoire for now, but lived in and alive, ready for us to dig deep.
    SET LIST
    "Nose on the Grindstone"
    "22nd Winter"
    "Lady May"

I keep coming back to this as well. It bums me out that his albums aren't just him and his guitar. It sounds so much better this way. Perhaps now that Oliver Anthony blew up, that authentic, acoustic sound can finally be embraced again by record labels. A guy like Childers, with all his soul and great songwriting, should be heard in his purest form.

Surgil and Jason are both great song writers while Chris just has an amazingly Bluesy voice

It was incredible. They were playing in the smaller room and would go out and mingle between sets because there is no backstage area. They are awesome guys, awesome entertainers and awesome songwriters. Music in America has been polished to an annoying level, its about time we have some down dirty gritty music again and I think these two are good ambassadors of that movement.

They get called white trash and whatever other insult by people who will then turn around and say they care about poor people. It's socially acceptable to make fun of them in many places for some reason even though they've been exploited in many ways over the years, especially by the coal industry and pharma companies. She is considered the bridge between traditional and modern folk music. Roscoe Holcomb was born here. He was the inspiration for the term "high lonesome sound". J.D. Crowe was born here, as was Hylo Brown, Loretta Lynn, Tom T. Hall, Grandpa Jones, Darrell Scott, Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Merle Travis, Gary Stewart, Joan Osborne, The Everly Brothers and The Osborne Brothers. I could name a lot more. It puts me to the mind of Tyler's "Banded Clovis". Chris's brother, Dirk, told me many years ago he knew Chris was going to make it in country music when Chris first played him "Down The River". Other Chris Knight songs you may want to check out for a start are "Little Victories" with John Prine, "Rural Route", "Becky's Bible", "Leaving Souvenirs", "Me And This Road", "It Ain't Easy Being Me", "Crooked Road", "William" or either of his versions of "Old Man".

Tyler gives voice to not just Eastern Kentucky , all of apalacia and it’s pain of the Opioid epidemic, but the culture that is leaving or gone from the loss of coal jobs, poverty, restless young hillbillies ( I get to say that I was one) and all of us people that grew up in those hollers . Well done young man. Every song makes me long to go back to the hills
