Cypress Hill: Tiny Desk Concert

The first thing I noticed as Cypress Hill strolled into NPR headquarters was Sen Dog cradling his signature bucket hat. I asked him if my assumptions were correct; it was indeed the original hat seen in all the videos from the early '90s. Before I could process that confirmation, B Real asked me, "Yo, is your greenroom a greenroom?" We got everything we expected and more from Cypress Hill at the Tiny Desk.
While the term "pioneer" is used loosely in pop culture today, few terms describe Cypress Hill's impact over the past three decades more adequately. They are the first Latino hip-hop group to achieve platinum and multi-platinum status. B Real, Sen and producer DJ Muggs crafted a sound in the '90s that stretched beyond regional boundaries. It was dark, psychedelic and at times directly addressed mental health before the topic was commonplace. Many dismissed the group as "stoner rappers," yet the members were fervent advocates for the legalization of weed long before it came to fruition.
Touring members Eric Bobo and DJ Lord joined the duo along with Money Mark from Beastie Boys fame. The band summoned a horn section to fill out this rare minimalist approach to five, funky Cypress Hill things. Between each song, B Real took his time to shed some historic light on the group's journey thus far.

Can't wait till Tiny Desk have 🔥 A lighter shade of brown with Teardrop, Shiro ,Chulo and Jammin James and the band. Their is a major movie production deal in the works.
We thank NPR and Tiny Desk Concerts for having us. This inspired us to do more musical pieces like this!! Much love to everyone here! And remember Cypress Hill forever 💯👊🏼
haha it's so cool to see this. grew up on your stuff in high school in russia! btw i've really like your metal stuff guys, that was fire🔥
Yea😊
yesss i love hip hop with live instruments!! yall killed it
This is banging!
You guys gave Life and Fire at the same time!!! Made my day, month, year!!! Love all you guys and the Horn section is straight 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'm 40 and this was the stuff I grew up with .Thank You Cypress Hill

Same here. Born in 1983 and the first rap mixtape I got my hands on (at the age of 9) had Cypress Hill, Naughty by Nature, NWA, Slick Rick, LL Cool J and all the other Kings of the scene back then.
I listened to that tape over and over until it eventually disintegrated.
I'm 45 and remember buying this tape at tower records when it came out.
B Real is one of the few artists where his actual rapping voice voice sounds EXACTY like the record. Sen Dog does too. Even 30 years later they sound so good.
Um...
no need for efx and autotune. just a dj, raps and a beat (with horns) the new bs nowadays sux big time
Soooo Gooooood
They bring so much energy just parked there on the stools.
Go take a look at the CH beginnings, the label wanted to kick B and only have Sen. B had to come up with his unique voice.
Can we all recognize the fact that the one and only Money Mark is just chilling back there on the keys at like 63(?) years old jamming with Cypress Hill
Yo!! I was psyched to see him, was JUST coming to comment this you beat me to it by months! 🎉❤
Edit: HAD to add, you mean “Thrifty Mark”? 😎
Yeah I thought that was him. Nice!
Cool to see $Mark and Eric Bobo too!
Yo was grooving and they showed Money Mark boppin along and i was super surprised!
hip hop just sounds so much better with a live band , those jazz horn samples and the drum loops played live is just something so dope . Love this tiny desk
Agreed a hundred! Check out and search on YT some hip hop acoustic and acapela covers as well.
I wanna see lil pump with a live band
Agreed! Saw Jay-Z perform with a big band in Rotterdam 15 years ago, it blew my mind.
💯I had a wonderful idea probably 15 years ago. A year in Hip Hop "Music" theme. Get the big name artist to do a year of shows with live bands. Concerts, tv appearances, promos everything. Would've been nice.
agreed 100 % . Saw these guys in the mid ninetees in Europe , it was a fresh breeze of rap genius beats among all those alternative cross rock bands also playing at the time
The drums and horn section make a live performance like this really come to life.
i saw them in denver with the colorado symphony. it was awesome.
and the dj
NPR Tiny Desk concerts are quite possibly one of the greatest things to ever happen to CZcams and the internet in general. Bringing all these legendary artists together in an acoustic space is brilliant.
Argentino disfrutando 2024
💯 I still watch Mac miller's to this day
Amen 🔥
B Real's voice is absolutely unique. I'd recognise it anywhere.
The sound of Cypress Hill ⭐️
B is 100% unique and flawless bi lingual bars.
Check out Psycho Realm. It’s his side project he did a while back.

that’s exactly when you know you’re 43 when you listen to Cypress Hill in jazz version, in a private concert!
..on NPR
Yes! On NPR! 💯🤣💯 I found this series because of a scarface clip on tiktok and I love it for some reason!
@anthonycimino9941 that scarface TD concert was as good as any concert ever could be! These bands and engineers are elite.
Or 46...
Its like the simpsons tho when they ordered the orchestra
B Real's flow is so unique, unmistakable and clean. Up there with Snoop. Never biting anyone else's style, no effects needed. Respect!
Nobody has seen Sen Dog’s eyes in decades. The bucket hat is always working overtime.
The brocha as well😅
Yup
But he can see you, just like the sheep dog in looney tunes lol
It's gonna wind up in a museum someday.

Wow I'm loving this old school hip hop revival thats happening on tinydesk. Juvi, Cypress Hill, etc. Who's next? House of pain? Naughty by nature? The Fugees? Bring them all!
A performance of the fugees would probably break the Internet
Just waiting on Arrested Development to show up like "We still here y'all!"
Eric B and Rakim ❤
NBN would be crazy dope
Fugees 🔥
B-Real one of the greatest lyricists ever. Cypress still doing it as good as when they came out. Legends 🔥
❤ Anytime I hear Cypress Hill I'm "transported" back in junior high!!! Miss the 90's 😢
B-Real and Sen still on point with their lines as if it's nothing. Masters in their craft!
Den is hilarious…. Never missing a beat😅
stands to reason that they would be on point with them lines...

maybe the best live hip hop drumming ive seen, really diligently sticking to the loops and not throwing in unnecessary fills, keeping that tension and staying clean and clear is one of the most underrated things about drumming for something like this.
Agreed. There's a powerful minimalism to his style.
It's almost as if he's a professional musician doing the job he's being paid to do 🤔
The hot rods are killing me though, takes all the punch out of the snare
His dad was a drummer/percussionist so it's in his blood.
That man was living in the pocket.
The horns are killing it! Fire!! 👍👍💥
Who ever came up with the tiny desk series is a genius. I love the diversity! It's cool to hear Cypress Hill is this form.
bob ross, and tiny desk, NPR should stop all other efforts, I'm cool with this use of taxpayers dollars.
Cool that Jay z played the drums..
I did that. Youre welcome.
Diversity = not white.just say it .
Hear, hear
Cypress Hill's appearance at the Tiny Desk was completely unexpected. Thank you. I send my maximum respect to the true musicians from Japan.🇯🇵
I saw them twice in concert in 2017 and 2019 and it was amazing both times. I knew from there that they were true artists, so it doesn't surprise me that much to see them here

These guys are absolute LEGENDS. There is no other group in hip hop anything like them. And they're still killing it after 20+ years in the game. Much respect to B Real, Sen Dog, Muggs and Bobo.

Tiny Desk Concerts have had the best lineup of any festival this year and I don't even gotta leave my chair - thank you guys for not only continuing this awesome series, but pushing the boundaries and elevating the format. To me, these performances are incredibly important pieces of human history
Well said! 👍
This comment should be pinned at the top!
Definitely underrated series! It's always delightful no matter who is playing!
This has made me appreciate these dudes so much more than in my youth. The added jazziness of this format really suits their style. Full album like this, please!❤
They could easily release this show as a live EP !
watch DJ Premier's episode if you like the horns in this one
Gotta agree with you, Lee. Although they always had some funky sounds going. Hope all's well with you there in CM ✌ MHS is treating me wel 😁
Love the horns man. Amazing you guys did these songs broke down like this. Awesome musicians, all you guys. Thank you for this!
This is what Rap music should be in the first place. This jazz mixture with real instruments is just fantastic.
Dj Muggs crazy for making these funky beats. To hear a band perform his music is too funky. Cypress Hill legendary!
Son una bendita Leyenda!!!.

Wow! I found it hard for Cypress to work on this format but wow, they did it awesome! Those horns sound incredible and smooth and the vocals blend together very well! Thumbs up!!
It's truly amazing how many artists absolutely crush this format! Usually this isn't what their live performances even look like or they have to assemble a live band. Respect. ✌️♥️✌️♥️
So true! I didn't give Mac Miller a second listen until his Tiny Desk...This Cypress Hill, next level. Love. Love. Love.

I can't even put into words what these tracks mean to me. These guys were seminal in me developing an appreciation for urban music and art. Thanks Tiny Desk and the Hill Gang for putting this into the world. Gives me goosebumps and chills to listen to!!
Ditto
Hip Hop he said not urban ;)
‘Urban’. 😂
This is amazing performance. Always and every time Cypress Hill...
I walked into a small record store in Aalborg, Denmark back in 1991 and had a listen to Cypress Hill for the first time and I was blown away.
As a teenager in 90s I was into grunge and metal. One day I was in a bootleg store and I saw cool looking Cypress Hill tape, cover printed in b&w. Some hardcore I thought. Came back home, played it and I was so confused for a minute. Two maybe. And I just loved it. Decades passed and I get goosebumps from their show at Tiny Desk.
Pretty much the same for me. Beastie Boys and Cypress and Gravediggaz flipped my little metalhead mind. I've loved metal and rap equally ever since.
same honestly. their album covers looked metal AF
Same- metal/ hardcore guy but got introduced to this early (along w rage and beasties) and have loved hip hop since.
totally, i was on a school trip on a bus and someone was like, hey listen to this, and i didnt stop. must admit i had a Salt-n-Pepa and DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince album already, but this was totally different
What you've described is maturing your musical taste! Some people never grow but you managed it! Proud of you!
For a 50 year old lady, hip hop is still fire. I fell in love when she saved my life about 30 years ago. ❤
52yo male can confirm!
At least we won't misgender Chuck going forward lol 😉
This was freaking fabulas1! Thank you so much !!
Love this how the lyrics flow and pure honesty of this gig...pure magic and enjoyment....yeah man...
Another Tiny Desk concert homerun! I loved the live band and also hearing the insights between songs. Thank you Cypress Hill and NPR🔥
Totally agree
This is what we all needed this summer!!
This Has Been A Good Summer
I had this on cassette when It came out in 92 93 I believe... and it never gets old.
Just back from a Cypress Hill and Ice Cube gig and they were as good as the 1st time I saw them in the 90s
TINY DESK DEFINITELY KNEW THE ASSIGNMENT AND NAILED IT!!! ON POINT!!! SALUTE FROM SAN DIEGO CAL.... CYPRESS HILL NEVER EVER WILL DISSAPOINT AND THEY PROVED IT AGAIN .... 50 YEARS OF LEGENDARY MUSIC 50 YEARS OF UNITY AND CULTURE*** VIVA HIP HOP AND RAP...
Live Hip Hop doesn’t get much better than this right here. So much respect for these brilliant artists.
I am here for this! Thank you!
Absolutely amazing! The level of showmanship and artistry...off the hook!

You wanna knows the worst part of your whole series that you wont care about because you get the clicks. I listend to hip hop all of my juvinile life and alot of my adult life but NPR you was suppose to be better. You was suppose to be the one who called out what the music does to my black community. And just like The History Channel and The Discovery channel did back inthe 90s its sad to say you put a price tag on your integrity for clicks.
How awesome!!! Fabulous concert!
🎉
One of the best. Thank you.
I’m glad I witnessed Cypress Hill in my childhood. This is 🔥🔥😊
Sen Dog bring so much to the table as a hype man. His voice is instantly memorable
