Today an aqua clear 70 unboxing and review.

I love the size of the Aqua Clear 70 Hang on Back Filter.

The Aquaclear use to be my favorite filter until recently when I had a few burn out during a power outage. My favorite filter has become the Seachame Tidel, because of how they put the Pump down in the water.

Evan Goers they burnt out because I wasn’t home when the power went o it and back on, and I wasn’t their to help make a siphon. It ran dry just long enough to burn it out.
They would have run dry with a clean impeller.

Michael's Fish Room I cheated on my smoke this past weekend. I have a homemade barrel smoker but used the Traeger pellet smoker this past weekend. Had too much going on and couldn’t babysit the smoker.

Love Aquaclears. I haven't had a restart problem in a while. When I do, it's usually a sign the impeller housing needs cleaning.

Nice unboxing. The hob gets the job done. My issue is that I've found my filter dead a few times over the course of days before water changes and had to pull it and clean it and the impeller and reprime it. My cichlids like to spit sand everywhere which binds up the impeller. The other is the media as it gets dirty will rise up in the filter box. But it is a good filter with a nice size box to DIY your filter. I know after a power failure it has yet to reprime itself. Thanks for sharing. Oh going to see Keith today to get my food. Maybe have to do an unboxing. Stocking up so I don't have to buy food for a while.

I just picked up a AC50 for a 20 high, I was so torn between these and a tidal 55, but so far I haven't had a power outage at this house so I figured I'd rather risk a burnt motor eventually rather than always have to cut out special funky shapes of filter floss with the tidal, plus replacement parts are so much easier to come by.
I am not a fan of the tidal.......I have one.

That used to be my fav but always having to prime it when the electric stops was a pain. My new fav is the Seachem Tidal!

I have a seachem tidal 35 and it works great but i would never buy one again due to the inability to put a prefilter on it. The next two sizes up would fix that issue.
North Fin Flake + Mulm drizzled o-so-delicately over s’mores and an iced Sunkist = brunch of champions.

I have a ton of aquaclears on most of my tanks. Love them. I use fluval only 206, 306, ac 20-50 fx4.. Anyway, fluval has a pre filter for the intake tube. Not sure if it would fit on a 70 intake, but worth a try if you are breeding in there. I have them on most of my tanks. Every few weeks you need to take them off and rinse them.

Damn they really taped up the box. Lol. I love AquaClear hob. I have all sizes in addition to canister filters. Love Super Cichlids guppy foods. Also love your samples when I order from you.
I will say depending on what is in the tank I use a sponge filter over the intake so it doesn’t suck up those delicious fry.

I put 3 types of sponges course med and pinky. I want to use ceramic rings in a bag , should I put them on top or bottom of my hob filter
The bio media should the last thing in the water flow.
I have a couple marina slims, a penguin 350, a penguin pro, as far as hang on back filters go.
I'm pretty close to just ditching the penguin 350. It's the noisiest in pump noise and water noise. No, it's not a Nascar engine and a waterfall in my living room, but it's the only one I really notice. I like that I can fit 4 aqua clear 70 filters in it, but that's about it.

Actually, the last Aquaclear update was 97 years ago (1923) when they made it electric because electricity was in the majority of U.S. and Canadian homes. Before that you had to wind it up like an alarm or grandfather clock. It also had a manual crank that your servants could use. Just thought you’d want the facts... 😉

I do like the aqua clear filters, The one complaint I have about them is the same everyone else does, the lid rattles and in your house it’s annoying as hell. They need to do an O-ring or some rubber tabs or just something to quiet them.
It's in my fish room so it doesn't bother me!

Fluval has bought the Aquaclear, now it is the Fluval Aquaclear 70.
It is great for modifiying into a refugium. So get a small aquaclear, and this 70. That way you have one biological mechanical filter, and turn the other into a macro algae refugium.
You can still buy just a "aquaclear".

Never tried it, but I think it works.
Neo shrimp in my guppy tanks do just fine. Both are thriving. I've noticed they do OK with Mollys too but I suspect some shrimplets are being eaten but have never seen it.

Mike is there a “chance” of carbon monoxide buildup in those tanks? I actually watched the video up on the bridge. I forget if this heater was propane or natural gas. Propane = carbon dioxide, natural gas = carbon monoxide. Please run a check, the gas could have stressed them out to GET the perceived killer disease.
I haver a CO detector in the Fishroom and on the other side of the curtain.

Because I use this filter only for biological filtration, it is only used as mechanical.

Supercichlids is a great mom and pop so if you don't buy stuff from me at least buy if from them. When I use to use HOB filters I found Aqualclears to be the best EASILY .
Folks - If you are going to use an HOB Filter Aquaclear is the only one I would recommend .

I bought a couple of Aqua Clear HOB filters. Long story short, electricity went out. By the time I could get to them, they they no longer worked. :(

Don’t use Vaseline it’s petroleum based . Use silicone gel on the o ring and especially the impeller shaft.

I'm in the process of trying all the major hang on back filters and so far this one is NOT at the top. It's good, but not great.

@@MichaelsFishRoom so far Mike I would have to say the Marineland emperor 400 is by far the best hang on the back filter I have tried to date. It always starts up after power failure, really keeps the water free from particulate matter and the carbon keeps the tank smelling great and stops the formation of brown diatom algae. Also, if you buy the replacement cartridges on amazon you can get them for a little over a dollar each. Easily affordable so no need to hot rod the filter with sponges. It's also plenty powerful.
@Drinking Water yes, still the best. I keep waiting for someone to come out with a better one but no one has. If aquaclear would improve their's by using a more sturdy plastic and incorporating a self cleaning impeller like the tidal has so it would restart after a power outage, they would be the best. They also need a more precise flow controller like the tidal. The tidal misses the mark because of the surface skimmer which sucks in food and fry.
@Drinking Water I tried the tetra whisper but not the IQ. I found it louder then most.
You want to use silicone grease for your O-rings, not Vaseline. Vaseline can actually degrade the O-rings, and you don't want it in your water.
I've used it for years without an issue.

Gonna have to disagree with the Aquaclear crowd on this. The Marina S series filters are better. They use an intank pump design so they autoprime on first startup and after power loss. Also they are virtually silent by housing the motor in the water. Similar clear and open chamber so you can run your own media. And they are slimmer on the back of the tank which is big for those of us with our tanks in our living spaces. Not to mention they're a fraction of the price. On Amazon all three sizes are under $20

This must be a paid advertisement given the fact that the aquaclear is a poorly designed filter. It could be great, possibly one of the best IF it had the pump in the aquarium where it could self prime after a power outage.

If it wasn’t a paid advertisement, as you say, then it was a bad review of a junk filter. I own that filter and it’s crap. The whisper is a better filter at half the price. So you must be trying to get free filters from them but they aren’t worth it. Free junk is still junk. The Fluval Aquaclear is a junk filter.
