- What is the best hang on back filter ever? What is the best filter to use? What is the best aquarium Filter? These are all questions I get asked about. For me the best filter to use is a sponge filter. But some people want to use a Hang on back or HOB. The best hang on back to use in my opinion is the Aqua Clear. In this video I do a Aquaclear 50 Review.

I’ve done so many diy projects with these kind of filters ! Love how customizable they are
We are like twins!
These are great filters. I have two 30’s and two 70’s. They run forever are quiet and you can put whatever media in you want like you said.
I enjoy all your videos!
Thanks T!
You bring happiness into my always sad days, thank you so much.
Thanks Laura! 🐒
I love how u take care of ur fishes
I hate you don’t spell “your”
@@MichaelsFishRoom LMAO - That's the world we live in today brother. (Insert Smiley Face Emoji here).
I'm so glad you did this video! Been trying to decide on a new more powerful filter or two for my tanks, well, I'm going with this! Thank you dear!
Glad I could help!
What could be more American than watching Michael on Super Bowl Sunday?
I've been using those "double sponged" for over 20 years - fabulous! I rotate and clean the "bejeezus" out of the bottom sponge every two weeks. It filters a "poop-ton" of detritus out of the water. :P
I see what you did that. Lol
LOVE this! Awesome information and I love HOB filters!
Thanks!
I just love how much fun you have. Thanks for the great video. I'm currently trying to get my AquaClear (now re-named something else by Fluval) to work better. I appreciate the help.
C-4 or something? What’s the matter with it?
The fluval C series is basically the same as the aquaclear. Fluval bought out aquaclear then took their idea and sold it under fluval C series they also sold the aquaclear known as the fluval clear or someshit its different from country to country.
I agree! I have a 30, a 50, and a 70
They areally the bestimate HOB,s that iv,e every had/used!.
Are or aren't?
The fluval edge foam prefilters also work great on the aquaclear 50 intake tubes as a prefilter. Just have to pull them off once a week to rinse. Would be nice if every HOB came with a prefilter by default. 👍
That would be nice! I bet most novice fish keepers would not know what to do with it though!
Love this filter so much. Just got a aquaclear 70. Added a little floss and my tank is crystal clear after 2 days.
Great to hear!
I absolutely love my Aqua Clear 50. Never had a problem with it!!!
Nice!
Love aqua clears my favorite hob for sure I have them all over my fish room you can fit a ton of bio media in them
For sure!
Try the Seachem Tidal HOB's and you will change your mind
Great Video Mike!!!!
Thanks brother!
I just wanna say, I appreciated the “U-Tube” joke. Please never change man.
I won’t! Thanks for watching.
Wait, what? Michael and I agree on something. Aquaclear HOB are awesome and very versatile. I enjoyed the informative video and was only offended 7 or 8 times. LOL Thanks and cheers.
I must be slipping if it was only 7-8 times, I promise I will do better
He doesnt mean to offend hes just jersey. You get what you get with the jersey man. I find it refreshing.
If I have a 55 gallon should I get this one or the next size up ? I love how helpful your videos are
I always go bigger👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼
I think I'm running 3 or 4 of them in my right now. I love them for that same reason's you mentioned. But 2 knocks are if you miss cleaning out the filter floss the thing over flows, and the ever popular doesn't restart after a power outage. Ya can't list the pro's without the con's. Very overlooked filter I'm glad you did a video on it. Well done!
Thanks Don!
Great video, I’m sold on it . Thanks 👍🏻and subscribed
Thanks Martin and Welcome!
I love how you speak your mind and rip on the haters. Keep doing your thing man!
For sure I will!
Ok
the Aquaclear HOB is the only mechanical filters I use, nothing else will do. So easy to clean and to use. Great vid
Totally agree!
I use this for my reef tank and it works a treat.
Sweet!
Damn your the best! Been going back watching older videos!! Awesome ! Keep it up sir!
Thanks Vince.
Probably the most entertaining vid I have seen😂

I think there are great filter I have AquaClear 50 on my 36 and I run a 206 Fluval canister filter the two together does a great job Happy Fish happy wife happy life great video👍
Thanks for watching!
I also love the AquaClear hob. Only hob I purchase anymore. The flow on these are awesome. Plus I like you can change up your media. The basket is large. Especially in the 110 model. Another great informational video Michael.
Thanks Robin!
Yeah man, these are the best filters. I absolutely love them. Great video!

Try the Seachem Tidal HOB's and you will change that statement
Aquaclear VS Tidal What is the best Hang on back filter? czcams.com/video/Uou6BKWMP_M/video.html
That's the only kind of filter I use. I have currently 10 running on my tanks. It has low profile and the clear plastic...to me makes it less of a eyesore ..like the tall black marine land one does. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching! What kind of fish do you keep?
lmao I love this video and I comment at 2:20 already. im gonna leave thumbs up
Thanks! Did you smash the sub button?
My fav too

I agree, aqua clears are the best. Stand by!
You know it!
I admit, just watching this video for the first time. Only because I love aqua clear and always have. It’s the other products I need a review on. But;good job again michael. 👍
Just released one today.

I have an aquaclear filter mini, so old the instructions are on VHS. Your video was great to refresh my memory on how to put it together. Surprising how this gizmo has the same design. 😅
lol, and still working?
I’ll confirm after x-mass but pretty sure it will 😊
I love your channel 😍 and you are so funny
Thanks!
I like it, just not the self priming or the tray floating up. But last part is on me. Love the videos, your video on the tidal help me decide against getting one. Great video!
Glad I could help!
I vote for the seachem tidal.. i love it
You don’t think it is noisy?
I agree. AquaClear is an excellent filter. I use the AC110 and AC70 on many tanks...
Nice! I replied to your email.
Hi Mike, I didn’t receive an email from you. If I misunderstood your reply, I apologize.

I have 2 50's on an overstocked 29. Both have Sponges on bottom. One has lava rock on top and other has floss. My ac 110's I do the same thing. Works awesome
Nice!
Love my AquaClears. I use to run 2 sponges and then the pack of bio media, but I was getting a bunch of overflow. So now I run a single sponge and lots of bio media. Works great.
PS: I hated my tidal filters, for those saying that haha
Lol
Why don't you use carbon? Any specific reason?
No reason too. It is used to pull tannins out of the water, I like tannins for the Heath benefits, it is used to pull meds out of water, I have AWC.....I don’t care about crystal clear water in breeding tanks....so no need.
@@MichaelsFishRoom thanks for the quick response! Also another question, should the filter tip be near the bottom of the tank? Mine is about a 1/3 of the way down.
timothy gw I like my top as far down as it will go🤣🤣😉😎🥺
i have one on a 20 and 29 (50s) great filters got mine at kensfish i have a slip on sponge on the intake in my shrimp tank

Informative and funny! What's not to like?
You forgot handsome.
Hey Michael, I know this doesn't involve what you're talking about in this filter but I'd like your advice. Would recommend a "main" air pump for 4 10 gallons, 2 20 gallons and a 75 gallon or should I just use one small pump per tank? Using sponge filters by the way. Anyways I love your videos sir always look forward to new ones. You're helping more than you think. Forever subscriber.
I like one pump,
It will be cheaper in the long run.
hey Michael, love the vid, i'm also a ac fan. i have been hearing for years people say "only bad thing is sometimes the top rattles and doesnt always reprime after power outage. but no one wants to come up with a solution. well, i have it. for the lid rattle? thats why they give you the black crap in a bag, to set on lid for weight, right? as far as reprime? for the 20,30,50, just cut the strainer off the pickup tube and press on a strainer for a fluval 06 or 07 series canister with check ball (can buy online for like 6 bucks)now when power goes out, you don't loose prime, filter stays full, and when power on it just goes, for 70 & 110 i use a fluval hose cuff for a bushing so it fits tight inside the pickup tube. hope this helps
Great idea!
Good vid bud , aqua clear are the best for sure
I concur!
Michael I wish to thank you. Mainly for the fact that your personality is sooo similar to mine and I agree and understand a large sum of what you say and how you are as a person. Michael's Fish Room A play on words from my group of friends. I went from 1 tank and a beta too 4 10g and a 55 in a matter on 3 weeks so they deemed my name ahah
Lol....hit it.
I’ve been using aquaclear filters for like 10 years. I’ve owned the 50, 70 and 4 of the 110s. 1, They Work Great. 2, I’ve owned other brands and you can count on the Warranty with aquaclear. 3, I was not happy with other brand filters as they break down. I’m still very happy owning and using them everyday. Great buy!
Awesome! What do you like best?
the two tubes allow you to draw from deeper in the tank to get the flow cycle working better
Yup
Awesome video. And totally agree with you on the aqua clear they are the best . I'll post a video on mine and how I set it up .I have 3 AC 110 on my 125 tank .
just subbed to you . Funny and informative
Thanks ZZZ, welcome to the channel! What type of fish do you keep?
@@MichaelsFishRoom I've kept African cichlids for 7 years , then had south and central Americans for 3 years (green terror my favorite). Just changed my setup about 2 weeks ago to geophagus and severum setup . I'll post a video tomorrow .

This guy appreciates it.
I have a tank set up 4" from wall wondering if the aqua clear hang on the back would fit between there. Running a sponge filter currently.
If I remember I’ll measure. But I bet you can find that info if you google it
Wow, there was some in-U-endo in this video, nicely played.
Maybe.....
At first i found your silly humor a but odd compared to other pretentious fish channels. But now that I see you know your stuff I enjoy your silly light hearted vibe. This hobby is about having fun and you make learning more fun. Cheers.
Wow! Thanks so much!
I’m glad you “get it”’some people don’t, but as you can guess, I don’t care! Lol
I had a aqua clear 50 that worked great for like 7 years lol , I personally prefer penguin 350s for a hang on the back filter . I use two 350s and a fulval 406 on a 75, it stays so clean I barely do anything but water changes every couple weeks
Nice.
Hi Michael, how much clearance do I need between wall and back of Tank? Thanks Tim
Depends on if you are putting something back there? Is it an outside wall? Does it get cold?
I agree aqua clear filters are the best !
Ditto!
First time watching you but "so I can get better... And make fun of you" just made me lol
Lol....glad I can make you laugh. This is a snowflake free zone!
The sound of that filter feels like home.
Well said!
I didn’t know I could replace the impeller! Sweeeet.....
I have this filter and only concern is wanting to make it quieter by....replacing impeller....
I don’t know it it will work but that’s the hope.
Good luck!
If you want to make it quieter, add vasaline to the shaft the impeller sits on. Replacing the impeller might not help, it's the shaft that gets worn, pull it out with pliers and check if you see any grooves.
Just bought 2 110s for my 75.. like it a lot
Nice!

Hey Michael how often should I do a water change on a 5 gallon tank with one betta in it?
When the nitrates reach a pre determined level.
I like how you place the sponge etc in that filter.. can't remember the name of mine..but it's a pain to add different filter stuff..and I will not use the crap it comes with..but it does an OK job of keeping the water clear..I added a sponge filter too because well Michael keeps on and on and on about them..🤔🤔🤔🤔..and works out he is not only a handsome guy..🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄..but he can sometimes be right too..which is odd him being a guy and all..😂😂😂😂😂
Lol....and he also says he is just a dumb guy with a camera!
I have one in my 29 gallon tank and it always gets quite dirty which means it’s doing it job and using accu clear makes it the best
Accu clear?
Michael's Fish Room yup from API
I agree but when are they going to fix the self priming issue. I use them , but that would be the only thing that I don’t like. I see you do the same thing with your carbon 🗑 I do course sponge, filter floss, purigen, two bags of media. I also always use a prefilter sponge on the intake..works great on these
It would be nice if they updated it somehow.
Custom media, will try
All the best
Hi, I have a tank sitting on a table under an upper kitchen counter. Can you tell me how many inches it is from the top of the aquarium to the top of the filter so I can see if this will fit under the counter? I have an internal filter and it sucks, but I don't want to hang a filter on the front and the glass wont allow it on the sides.
Let me google that for you..... www.google.com/search?q=aquaclear+70+dimensions&rlz=1C1GCEU_enJP820JP820&oq=aqua+clear+dimentions&aqs=chrome.3.69i57j0l5.7412j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

How big is the tank you used this with? I'm considering whether I should get the Aquaclear 30 or 50 for my 30 gal.
It was a 20. The 30 would be fine.
I’m debating on getting a aquaclear or a marineland! I’m setting up a 55 gallon. Cichlid tank this will be my first tank in over 10 years. Toooo many options. Which one should I go with I’m ready to get water in my tank and start cycling,
I really like both. I think you will be happy with either.
There are good filters- the 20 was the mini the 200 is the 50 but the original where the best had them for long time.
Yeah!
Great video. But why don’t you want to use the carbon? Just curious I’m new to the aquarium scene and still learning!
Great question! Carbon is used to remove impurities in water. In tanks with plants, most of those impurities are food for the plants. I want the plants to use it. Also carbon can be used to absorb medicines and clear up water that has tannins in it.
Michael's Fish Room thanks! Now I know!!
You’re Welcome!
Hey Michael! Random question, hopefully you can help!
When online-ordered fish are received by the buyer - what is the proper method of prepping and transferring the fish to a new home environment? Does one rest the bag and allow it to temperature-match, or maybe drip acclimate? Or is it the old-school dump the bag into a net over a bucket and transfer directly to a tank sort of deal?
Thanks!
Plop and drop! I have many a video on it.
May I ask if a hob filter can suck up all fish poops or just the poops near the intake?
Depends on the flow, but most likely yes.
Throughout my entire life (which is not that short anymore : ( ) I must have had a dozen Aqua Clears on my multiple tanks. It's always been my favorite but I do have to admit that living in South Florida between the hurricanes and thunderstorms, the power outages are frequent and when you get home and find dry media especially bio media and a dry whirling impeller it's been tempting lately to buy a submerged impeller like the SeaChem Tidal since it will prime itself once the power is back on. You can also place your own media like the AquaClear and on top of that you can take an interior basket out of the filter that has sides and the reversible top of the filter doubles as a bottom for when you remove the basket you won't have water all over the place. I just bought one and hope it will be as great as reviews say it is.
I find if you keep the impeller clean and maybe lube it, it should start after a power outage. Another trick, is add a sponge filter for a place for extra BB to live so if the AC does not start and the media gets dry, there is still BB in the tank.
some filters have the floss sock with a plastic frame inside. with the aquaclear it is just the foam block. so when I bought a replacement foam, I didn't need all the plastic... less plastic is good, also the foam filter lasts years longer than the floss sock kind...
with aquaclear, I would suggest people think twice about getting a much larger filter. like you mention the 50 gallon, is for 20-50 gallon. but when I used a larger filter for the tank, I had to turn the flow way down. it can make the filter a bit louder, sometimes if makes the lid start to vibrate... also when the flow is turned down, it could make the motor and impeller work harder and wear out sooner? seems always better to match to the proper sizes
Depends on the stocking. Some fish like more flow. I don’t think it will wear out sooner if you keep low.
Which one would You recommand for my 10gallon tank? Version 20 or 50?
Depends on what you keep in it. If you flow isn't an issue, I would go with the 50.
"O BROTHER" The "Henny Youngman" of the AQUATIC WORLD. Thanks for the laugh of the day. Also for the info. Been using

I am not sure, I would think so.
What about when the power goes out does the filter still work
How can it work if there is no power?
Hey! I was going back and forth on whether or not I want this filter. The only reason I'm not sure about it is because it's known for being noisy, and my 20g tank will be in my bedroom. Can I have a successfully filtered 20g tank with only a sponge filter? Is there any cons to having one?
Sponge filters are great at biological filtration! But not great at mechanical
GOODSTUFF bro
Thanks!
I love Aquaclears, wouldn't have any other kind of HOB filter. My only problem with them is that the lids can get an annoying rattle, and sometimes there's a problem with the motor refusing to restart.
Yeah there have been many discussions here about the restart. Lol
Why did you put the poly fill before the coarse sponge?
I always thought it was the other way around you want the water they hit their coarse sponge first
Just to see if you are paying attention.

Can we use aquaclear 50 used in marine tank???
I have no idea about a marine tank, sorry.
Agreed, best hob out there!
I know this isn't your newest vid by any means... However, I had to ask- Wouldn't the Poly Fill, and sponge media, work better if they were reversed? Ya know, putting the most course filtering media on the bottom (To mechanically filter out the biggest particles) Followed by another of the same, or another sponge with slightly smaller pores, then the Poly Fill/Filter floss (To "Polish" the water/Filter the remaining extra teeny particulates out.)
If I'm completely wrong here, or if I'm missing something, please let me know! (Because that's always entirely possible haha) Also, if that is the case, I would sincerely love to understand your method!
Anyway, thanks for another great vid! 😉
Nope...you are correct! Thanks for watching!
Is that good enough to clean a 10 gallon water tank with 1 small and 1 big gold fish
Depends on how much water you change.
For over 20 years of fish keeping, when it comes to HOB, I’ve owned Aqua-Clear, Marineland, Fluval C, Seachem Tidal and by far Seachem Tidal ranks 1 in my opinion.
Cool
Years ago I was talking to a Professor of "Ichthyology from the "U of M" (Michigan) and he told me that charcoal loose it pulling

At chemical filtration?
@@MichaelsFishRoom -----No just a reg.sand filter system -----the sand is the same that they use to filter in your Municipal water system
Oh? That makes sense now.
Hi Michael...nothing controversial from me this time ..just a thumbs up on the video. Oh..and I'm all a-twitter about your CZcams joke. 😀
Lol...glad some one is!
And you know I don’t care about controversial!
Granted, the priming issue does exist, but still prefer them. My AC 30 run dry for around 22 hours. When I discovered it, the motor was HOT!!! No surprise! But, I let cool, rinsed the media in dechlorinated water and the monitored the water parameters and all was fine. BUT, these were healthy fish, in an established tank. This is part of the reason why I choose to run unsightly sponge filters in all my tanks, scaped or otherwise. Well placed hardscape or plants can hide them reasonably well.
Sponges are great and hiding them helps.
The problem I had with hang on the back filters is that if you go away on vacation the filter gets clogged you will have a flood in that room on the floor. Never occured with the Bubble Up Corner filters.
Yeah, that can happen.
I see a complaint that the Aquaclear doesn't restart after a power outage. The problem is that detritus (aka crud 'n muck) gets down in the impeller/magnet chamber.
All you need to do is pull the motor/impeller and clean it like once a month and the filter will restart every time!
Good advice!
i buy the seachem tidal 55 and for 3 weeks the sponge is clean! noting waste, noting!
aqueclear is the best hang on, 25 years of tests they back it
This is true!
