    A HUNDRED YEARS RICK AND MORTY my god, what a season premiere. As I’m sure you know, Rick and Morty’s sixth season began last night with an absolutely SHOW SHATTERING EPISODE called Solaricks. And I can’t believe it but they did everything I wanted them to do and more. This is the most excited I’ve been about Rick and Morty in literal years, so let’s dive in!

      Let’s hope discovery won’t cancel it. Because of ties to Disney.
      Discovery: why don’t you be like mainframe I mean they were inspired by ghostbusters.
      Me: yea and their inspiration is what lead them to pull a star Fox adventure for one of their original show by adding reboot characters in it.
      Discovery: wasn’t they added characters to a reboot show?
      Me: that what I thought of but then I did some digging and came to the conclusion that wasn’t the case.
      (Yes mainframe did pull a starfox adventure I suggest to research it a little more)

      Can we just ignore the captain marvel bullshit? I'm all for erasing that parody. It's like starting out with the best fucking memory of the last Marvel Movie that will ever matter followed by the literal ground zero MCU killer. I'm am, however, glad they just moved past it and were berating her the entire time for being stupid as shit trying to explain shit in what was worse than original 140 character string twitter bubbles. Or is that literally all you can fit into an iPhone message until it makes you "read more"? I've never owned an apple product, so I'll assume this might be for the normie fucks who watched captain marvel and still buy iPhones until I'm corrected.
      But yeah, after that annoyance, they finally shut people up about Evil Morty destroying the central finite curve. Obviously, why would he say "I'm leaving" and "On this side of the curve" if he wasn't planning on an escape where he's free to travel via an alternate version of portal gun travel that excludes all central finite curve destinations. It's still up for debate whether Evil Morty could be pulled back from the "yellow" multiverse to his original dimension as we've technically never seen him use a green portal, and it's also pretty much canon now that the central finite curve is very much still there and Evil Morty was intent on "leaving it" and not destroying it. I would err on the side of caution though since they seem pretty intent on explaining things this season if episode 1 is the standard they're setting.
      Also, you mentioned about the lack of episodic feel in this episode. Quite frankly, as soon as Rick fucked up and reset everyone to their original time lines, it was kind of a mish mash of canon and episodic feel. Possibly because of all the new lore drops. It more or less felt like Operation Phoenix mixed in with everything everyone has been theorizing about for the last few years.

      Plus Rick can't really camp Prime Ricks world since our Rick would also be returned to who is dimension. Since he doesn't know where Prime Rick would return so he can't really set up a trap. He only knew the hidden spaceship after Prime Rick returned.
      Plus Prime Rick is only trapped because portal tech is wonky. Even if our Rick resets everyone, it doesn't mean Prime Rick can't portal out. If Rick decides to distort the portal tech, he would also need to do the complicated new portal travel that they did this episode.

After the liberation of Nazi concentration camps in WW2, the Allies tried to help the surviving and emeciated Holocaust victims by feeding them (solid) food but many died a few days later. Autopsy showed that due to their bodies warped by prolonged hunger they are unable to process solid food. I like the way this episode addresses how Rick treats his family as interchangable, while also getting attached to specific iterations. Currently, the family the show follows consists of people from 4 different universes, one of whom is a clone. The Jerry from the daycare unknowingly had his family replaced, gets attached to the new family, and leaves the old one without a second thought after being sent back to his home universe. OG Morty accepts Rick C-137 over Evil Rick, his real grandfather. Evil Rick doesn't get attached, while our Rick does, which is why he's so committed to revenge but ultimately gives up on it for the greater good. OG Jerry shows the perspective of a victim left behind in the chaos, forgotten due to the family's interchangabity. Space Beth has a 50-50 chance of being a clone, but the focus is on how she changed by leaving the family. Evil Morty, who killed countless other Ricks and Morties, simply wanted to leave this dynamic of infinite interchangable families.
    The episode shows both sides of the nihilism towards having infinite interchangable families across the multiverse. People can easily get left behind and replaced, but it also provides new opportunities to bond with the "replacements", so to speak.

    Considering Rick was going to have Space Beth and Domestic Beth essentially merge back into one person, and the hints so far of their arcs for s6, I think it'd be cool for both to choose to merge back when they're actually ready for it. I originally liked that they didn't do this, but I think it makes sense going forward now that the Beths are actually confronting themselves. Besides, the family has progressively gotten wrapped up enough in the space adventures (as well as Space Beth potentially taking on more of a familial role again) that there's becoming less of a need for two different versions of Beth.

    Something I'd like to see moving forward (and Space Beth potentially sticking around gives me hope) is to see less of a divide between 'episodic stories' and 'continuity stories'.
    I think the show sometimes mistakes 'continuity' for 'canon', as if continuity necessarily has to move the plot forward, and necessarily moves the show closer to its end. In rejecting continuity, it feels like things are almost never allowed to feel tangible outside of meta callbacks or outside of dedicated 'plot' episodes, so the world (particularly in Season 4 and 5) beyond the family feels super small. If it's not a plot episode, then odds are anyone new introduced is a one-off obstacle/species that will either die or fuck off for a really long time until a dedicated callback. I don't even need plot, I just want the show's wider world to feel less disposable, if that makes sense.

    @ghostsurfer23 Před rokem +7

    I really love that through seasons 4 5 and 6 of Rick & Morty, and even Solar Opposites, you can see the creators genuinely trying to figure out how to balance serialization with episodic storytelling, and how to both service a fans but also tell stories that are satisfying to them as creators, and not jump the shark. If two years ago you told us Rick's backstory would just be laid out in a quick sequence and then the show just moves on, it would be easy to assume the show would suffer for it, but they genuinely seem to be taking full advantage of it and the story opportunities it provides.
    As for this episode, a few thoughts:
    1) One thing I'm curious about is the Jerryboree theory, and how a lot of fans assume that Mr. Poopybutthole is from the "Green Rocks Universe", so if this episode is confirming that universe to be a thing, does that mean every episode to feature Mr. Poopybutthole prominently, like 'One Crew Over the Cuckoo's Morty', is this "Green Rocks Universe"?
    2) This technically relates to the season 5 finale, but seeing all these universes lined up and getting clearer definitions for them, we still don't have an explanation for why Rick's memories contained a scene of him playing with a toddler-aged Morty, a memory he seemed to care about. Because it can't be C-137 Earth, since Beth dies as a little girl in that one. And it can't be the Cronenberg/Rick Prime Earth, since Beth says Rick has been gone from their lives for longer than Morty has been alive. My guess is prior to integrating himself into the Cronenberg/Prime Earth, he tried it with another family in another dimension, like how we're told other Ricks do with abandoned adult Beths, and he tried to have a normal happy life there where he was there for Morty early on. But something went wrong, and that's where Evil Morty originates from.

  • @AaronLockman
    @AaronLockman Před rokem +36

    Words truly cannot express how impressed I was with this episode, and this is coming from someone who mostly REALLY does not like Rick and Morty.
    From the beginning, Rick and Morty has always felt cynical, dour, and pointlessly pessimistic to me. Much of Morty's early arc consists of him learning over and over again that caring about stuff is for losers, and inevitably leads to disappointment and meaninglessness. Rick's dire, pessimistically nihilist worldview is constantly critiqued, but never subverted in any meaningful way. For me, this was crystalized by the way the first episode of Season 3 followed up the Season 2 cliffhanger. We'd been given the impression that Rick turning himself in represented his first true selfless act in the entire show -- but nope! Turns out it was a cynical ploy to effortlessly destroy his enemies, as always! That was really where Rick and Morty lost me.
    And then after that.... well, the only way to logically progress the arcs of the Smith family was to kinda make them numb to the craziness? To make them more and more like Rick, to ensure that very little of what happened to them had any impact. And while, yes, that makes sense, after a while that's just not compelling to watch anymore! To Season 5's credit, there were a few episodes, including the last three (as you point out) where the events truly begin to feel more impactful again.
    But this episode??? This was the first episode in a LOOOOOONG time where I deeply, viscerally felt like the events of the show ACTUALLY MATTERED to the characters on the show. Kronenberg-World-Jerry and his interactions with Morty are obviously the prime example of the writers beginning to deeply explore some consequences. But every little thing in this episode seems designed to ram home that like, yeah! These people DO have desires, and fears, and insecurities that actually matter, that feel real! The stuff with Diane in Rick's original universe especially. The episode's granular attention to continuity could have felt fan-service-y, but instead it served to accentuate that the episodic nature of Rick's adventures is a complete delusion. Everything has consequences, and this episode is where they all came home to roost.
    And like. . . the episode also seems to say that all these consequences? They don't have to BREAK YOU! Losing yourself in meaningless episodic escapades, as Rick has been attempting to do for nearly five seasons, is NOT the only way to survive! Over and over again, the Smiths in this episode CHOOSE who their family is, DESPITE the fact that they're not all from the same universe. And together they're able to weather a catastrophic shift in circumstances together AS A UNIT! And it's GREAT! Call the presses, an episode of Rick and Morty made me experience an EMOTION!

I know they say it doesn't matter anymore but, seeing her take it or leave it attitude towards Summer, and how mean season 2 Beth was, and how she didn't care about Morty or summer in season 3. She has to be real.

Seems like Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are done (or at least taking a break) from shitting on the fanbase and like you said, finally embracing itself. They have all this creativity and intelligence and it feels like they're finally just giving us a good show instead of constantly being reluctant about doing any serialization.

    Good analysis. The only thing I will add is that a 5:20, when you say it is the first time we hear Diane's voice, it isn't technically true. We hear her voice and see her on the fabricated memory of 3x01. At that moment it was stated that these scene wasn't the origin story of Rick, but since then we learned that essentially it is.
    I want to also add how Rick C137 technically kills prime Rick's Beth causing apocalypse on his earth, and "kidnaps" his Morty. He probably doesn't care, but that is a thing that happens.

    I was really pleasantly surprised at the season 6 premiere. While I liked the season 5 finale overall, especially the reveals, it seemed to give them somewhat begrudgingly with Rick having a poor attitude about it, as if the writers wanted to not focus on continuity and serialized elements, and I thought Evil Morty's exit would serve as the perfect back to status quo. Not only did "Solaricks" prevent the snap back to the prior status quo, but it revealed even more stuff, this time without the attitude.
    Also them switching dimensions means we hopefully won't see Naruto "Giant Incest Baby" Smith again. Good riddance.
