I’ve been an expat for 40 years since I was 15yo, 22 years in SE Asia. The only problems I’ve ever had have been with other foreigners. I’m very selective about my social circles, mostly stay at home and don’t go out drinking - ever. Keep it simple! We are here to get away from toxic BS, not get enmeshed in it. My own rule: “two degrees of separation” - between me and toxic people and relationships. If a friend is enmeshed, I keep my distance or slip away and go silent.

Having been going to SEA for nearly 20 years it's actually you guys who are the weirdos. You aren't special. You are just trying to hide something about your life, or you have terrible social skills and the locals don't pick up on it so fast. Oh, and about the locals in the Philippines. It's actually those guys who are the ones you should be swerving but nevermind. Do you know the irony of you guys? You go onto fellow expat CZcams channels or forums dedicated to expats proclaiming how you ignore/don't hang out with fellow expats. Hilarious behaviour.

During the 15 years I have been in and out of the Philippines, I had never had a problem with ex-pats. But in 2020 and 21 we had trouble with a Norwegian. He and I were sometimes the only guy in a cafe that served liquor. He was handsome, well spoken and friendly. I visited with him several times and rather enjoyed it. But he drank too much. He would start with five San Mig Pilsons that he drank slowly and handled them well. When He got to the 3rd or 4th I would just leave because the conversation became less engaging. But one day I was there with my Filipina wife. And I visited with this guy for a few minutes and I saw he was starting to drink too much and told my wife we should leave the outside tables and go inside. But she wanted to visit. Well in a few minutes she got in trouble. He told her that he didn't like Filipina food. My wife took issue with that. And I could hear them arguing so I returned to the table. By then the Norwegian had "shifted gears" from his usual Pilsons to hard liquor. I told my wife firmly we need to go inside and get a table. But she said that the guy had picked on the wrong girl and rebuked him for his behavior. I told my wife later that the most useless thing in the world you can do is argue with a drunk Norwegian. And it was true. But we left and went inside to find a booth and order. But the drunk guy followed us in. And he said "Mark, I feel sorry for you having to sleep with a girl like her. She is so ugly I don't know how you sleep with her. " Now of course I wanted to mix it up with him. I am 6'4" but he was taller and younger and meaner and I always had the rule that if a fight was about to happen i would leave the premises. But my wife called the cops. She knew most of them and was related to several of them too. They came with a van and took the rowdy guy to the cop shop in a patty wagon. My wife is a retired cop and swat team member. She is an attractive lady, about 5ft10inches tall. She was a good knife thrower and practiced hand to hand combat with men in training. So I was glad she didn't get physical with him. But I wish she had shut up and followed me when I left the outside table. She filed a grievance at the police and with the local barangay. There was a series of court dates over several months because he had pursued us into the cafe and threatened us. However I had some urgent health issues and we had to leave during the time before the court had decided if he was to be deported. He had a beautiful local wife who was a nurse and they had a young child. So I said I thought that we should just drop the charges because I had to leave. And she stopped all the legal proceedings and we left to go back to the USA for medical care for me. She had hired a lawyer and they were in the process of having him deported for abusing a native women who was a Philippine citizen. Two weeks later we heard that the Norwegian had got drunk and went to sleep while driving his motorcycle going home. He drove up on the sidewalk and killed an elderly local woman with his motorcycle. The locals met at his house and were trying to burn down his mansion. The man fled to another part of the Philippines with his wife and eventually settled with the family of the woman he had killed for about $2,000 US funds. And then I wished I had supported my wife in having him deported. She had enough "pull" with the local officials that she could have pulled it off. But she listened to the old man. I didn't want to break up a young family. And I was wrong as I am sometimes. We should have had him deported.

People really need to get over this idea that being a "veteran" bestows some type of special human status above and beyond others. I've been a LEO my entire adult life and am a veteran myself. Can't tell you how many vets I've locked up or otherwise had to deal with over the years. A vet can be just as scummy and deplorable as anyone else...and may not even be a vet frankly. Obviously lots of good vets out there as well. Know how you can tell for starters? They don't remind you they are vets every chance they get.

In my 7 years as an expat in the Philippines, I have come to a few conclusions.
Most expats, not minority, come here for a few reasons.
Number one…. Can’t afford to live in there country of origin. Number 2, are trying to run away from there past life, finding out soon , that no matter how far you try…. You can’t.
Check out the expat situation in the Caribbean, Mexico, etc.
The net worth and quality of expats is substantially above what the Philippines receives as expats.
I’m generalizing, but I think most would agree, facts don’t lie.

Nice rant. Well warranted. I'm a US vet and 7-year expat/traveler (mostly Vietnam/Thailand based). Best advice I learned a few years back, 'show me your friends, I'll show you your future.' That has served me well. A big problem with living abroad (for many) is 'needing' a social circle to belong to. Focused and driven men have their ambition - they don't have time to associate with people glued to a bar stool. The opposite of that spectrum (many veterans, unfortunately) aren't lone wolfs. They need a pack to run with. Some, who are living on pensions, make their own pack (building a family) and that becomes their purpose...they're retired and content and can be good people. The biggest red-flag to look out for in anyone is alcohol - stay away from any and all who get drunk...period. These men are liabilities to themselves and all around them. They are emotionally volatile, make poor decisions, and WILL hit bottom eventually in one way or another. And when they do, the blast area can reach far (financially). Do not get close to these people. Keep your guard up, your friend circle small, your business (and money) private, and stay driven and focused. Good women are attracted to ambition. Vultures are attracted to easy prey.

No man is an island! That's for sure. It's still nice to have someone around I can relate to. It really helps to blow off steam once in awhile. But, I am by design a loner. I choose my friends, of which I have very few, over a long period of observation. I charish my privacy very much, especially in the times I am living in now. I could never be a vlogger. Anway, that's just old, unassuming me. I normally am a person of few words, but in this situation this 80+ year old Vietnam Vet feels compelled to pass on a little advice.
I do appreciate the topics you cover on your videos. I find them very entertaining, educational and enlightening. However, I find the problem with your nemisis vlogger a little perturbing. You are by far and beyond a much better human being than this creature from the black lagoon ever thought of being or could ever be. He thrives on getting under your skin and receiving an emotional response. He does not deserve your attention. You are simply fanning his flame and that of those that follow him. You know, birds of a feather stick together. Simply ignore this hopeless creature and block his sorry ass. Keep on keeping on with your normal high quality of work. That is what I look forward to listening to and watching everyday as do your other loyal subscribers. I salute you, bro!
One more thing, I heard you put out a video on what an expat should do to be sure the vital information of his passing gets quickly passed on to interested parties in the U.S. I must have missed it. Could you please give me the title of that video? Thanks in advance.

I suspect that this post is not entirely relevant to your video, but it does pertain to living a peaceful life, free from hassle. I don't know any foreigners. I have lived her permanently for 4 years. My family is settled and comfortable. This was my day today and it pretty much sums up why I am glad I moved here. I walked 5km into town. On the way I stopped off at a hole-in-the-wall joint where I got a croissant - proper French-style, not filled with sugar - and a couple of decent espressos made with local coffee. I did my shopping, walked home and sorted out what I had to do. I then walked to my local sari-sari store as dusk was falling where I sat in peace, under what the locals have dubbed 'the monkey tree" - guess who is the monkey! On my way I encountered my 7-year-old son and his pals doing what kids their age should be doing, playing and having fun. I witnessed a hell-for-leather bike race which culminated in a truly spectacular crash involving three kids. I did my duty, made sure they were ok - skinned knees and elbows, the stuff we used to experience as kids - and that there were no in concussions in the offing. I then sat with my beer and my book and was 'accosted', although that word seems too strong, by a lady and three young kids who proceeded to demonstrate their "Beyonce" moves to me! As I have implied, the locals, adults, teens and kids, are used to the foreigner sitting down, minding his own business. However, what strikes me is that were that situation to occur in the UK or the US I would have run a mile rather than even talk to young kids. That to me is a sad reflection of Western society.

    Steve,
I learned to just live my life and not worry about what others say about me. My father taught me to think of detractors and gossipers as scabs that eventually fall away on their own.
Stay strong, on course and live your life.

Being a vlogger can bring many benefits such as having a larger platform to express yourself and your opinions, more recognition for your work, and the opportunity to influence people.
Lack of privacy is the biggest disadvantage vloggers. Secondly, the vloggers are easily judged. People constantly judge based on their personalities, bodies, and habits. It is also very common for vloggers to have fake friends.

I enjoyed listening to your video today. I plan on coming to the islands, most likely Cebu to start, and plan on staying for a very long time, if not permanently. I want to enjoy the adventures I've not had for a long time. I was wondering if there are condo's for rent near your area. I'd love to meet you and maybe even join your group. I'm 74 and in good health. I don't have lots of money anymore, with a failed business, taking care of my brothers finances and his funeral, upgrading my sons old house, and giving him some money so he could get the larger house he needed for his large family. My heart is gigantic, but my wallet isn't anymore. hahaha. I'll be budgeting 1500 usd per month, which includes funds for health insurance in the future, savings, and entertainment. I want to keep my housing cost no more than 25000 pesos per month.

To think I was called a hypocrite (Although I think they meant I was being prejudiced) and some other not so kind words, for saying I would want to be in a place with as few ex-pats as possible because I don't want all of their negativity and drama in my life. The irony is hilarious, they didn't even see that their own response was exactly why I said it. How miserable does a person's life have to be to need all the drama and negativity so they can feel better about themselves because someone else has it worse off than they do.

Most of the vloggers think that what they post is the only right opinion and when you criticize them they are angry and offending. The American are leading in this and I agree 100% with you that they should stay at their home country with their crap..... Coming to the Philippines and promoting to look for a gun to protect your property is very bad because the actual situation in the US shows that having guns doesn't make your life safer....I am not interested in having contact to foreign immigrants because I came in the 90's to SEA because I have enough from the western way of life. That's why I never use the word Expats because this is only used for white people or do you call a Filipino in the US/EU expats???

I don’t plan on hanging around expats. I’m learning bisaya and plan on spending time with my in-laws and their friends. I don’t know why anyone would go to the Philippines broke. But the insults and accusations I see from the vloggers is nothing new. This is a strategy that has been going on for a long time regardless of the genre. I see it finance, real estate , even gardening vloggers. Basically they attack their competition and hope to drum up views with the drama. Probably worst with the Philippines expat CZcamsrs as so many of them are broke and need the money or fat lazy pos that have so much time on their hands in between waiting on the blue pill to kick in to do their 3 minutes of loving making to someone 40 years their junior
