I’ve been playing some Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption again recently, and if there’s one thing that has really stood out to me, it’s their openings. I’ve spoken about Red Dead Redemption, so now it’s GTA IV’s turn-what it does right, what it does wrong, and whether or not it still holds up today. Let’s talk about the first 40 minutes of Grand Theft Auto IV.

Thanks so much for checking out the video! I'm looking forward to getting back to the real history of Red Dead Redemption 2's third chapter, but I couldn't waste this opportunity to talk about one of my favourite games from Rockstar. I hope you don't mind the quick detour!
Which GTA game has your favourite opening? Does it also happen to be your favourite game in the series? Let me know!

Same here. The first time I drove a car in GTA V my car was swerving everywhere as the driving physics in that game are incredibly basic. GTA 4, whilst not perfect was so satisfying to drive. Once you got the hang of it you felt like an actual boss, weaving in and out of traffic and drifting around corners. There was risk and reward and that made sense.

Personally, I'd say it more than holds up even 13 years later today because it succeeds in all the points that made the first Redemption's opening work so well; it tells you everything you need to know about this character, world and themes it attempts to tackle.
Our first shot of Liberty City, frames it as a sort of new hope for Niko's future, but equally, the ominous music and the last shot of him looking concerned before it cuts to the title tells us this will be a place of newfound pain and regret for our new protagonist. Speaking of, the main thing that ties all this scene together is the game's fantastic main theme that helps engross you in this adventure you're about to embark on, similarly to Red Dead Redemption's opening.
Oh and we have to recognize the fantastic performance Micheal Hollick puts in this game. By first scene alone, he manages to get you as the player to emphasize with his goal but also subtely get the point across that he lived a life of misery and sin way before he actually say so in the game.

What a pleasant surprise this upload was. GTA 4 feels different as a whole, a style and atmosphere unlike any other in the series (or even their whole repertoire), and i hope they decide to revisit this direction for their open world games once again. But with the state of R* right now, the Houser brothers leaving, online modes being the priority etc, there is an uncertainty about the future of it's high quality single player titles - which makes me appreciate GTA 4 even more, there may not be another like it. Anyway, great upload and i'm looking forward to the next RDR2 historical accuracy video!

I agree. I think R* are on a slippery slope and it’s downhill from here. Dan Houser is a writer and artist. Did he really want to spend the rest of his career making low effort DLC? Probably not.
He wanted to be writing for new GTA’s and RDR’s, or at least writing single player, story driven expansion content in between big, main title releases. Not writing minimalist content for GTA online for 8 years, in my opinion.
I hope he makes his own studio, (I think he might already have, or he’s definitely launched a new company) stays independent and poaches all the talent from R*. Then Take Two can F off. Take Two has destroyed R*.

What I love about GTA IV's first few hours is how it establishes how Niko's "routine" would be working for Roman, hence the large amount of driving in it. It then shows Niko's slow introduction into Liberty City's criminal underworld, first by beating up some people, then killing more people with Little Jacob, then doing favors for vlad, before killing Vlad and moving on to more powerful bosses. It sets Niko's expectations for settling into some place where he can live a happy normal life with Roman, then slowly betrays that expectation. Also note that you didn't even meet the game's main antagonist at that point, and when you do, you don't know he's even the main antagonist.
I feel like that's something GTA V didn't do well on its opening. I can't really connect with Franklin being this low-life criminal when his 3rd mission has he meet Michael, and his 10th mission you're doing a heist that pretty much sets him up for the rest of the game. GTA IV's 10th mission is one for Vlad where you are introduced to choosing between killing or sparing characters.

Ive always said that GTA 4's opening is amazing and i always use it as an example to showcase how to introduce new mechanics/characters/story elements to the player. it also shows how the developers care for the pace of the game. i recently played Far Cry 6 and that game is basically the opposite.... within a couple of minutes you pretty much have all the content and mechanics that the game has to offer right at your finger tips. its as if the developers are scared that their game would be too boring too quickly so they just throw everything at you as a player. like, in GTA 4 it takes a while before you 'earn the privilege' to fly a helicopter, as that is the most high profile way of traversing the world. first only have Roman's cab and you also get introduced to the metro. but in far cry 6 its like"''HEY THIS IS A FAR CRY GAME REMEMBER?!?! HERE IS A BOAT, A PLANE AND A HELICOPTER AND A WINGSUIT AND A ROCKER LAUNCHER!!!!!!!'' I understand that some people would prefer that, but it clearly shows the how the devs think about their own game versus the what the GTA 4 devs think about their game. there are many differnet games to mention in both ends ofcourse. Half-Life 2 is also an excellent example for how to build a story and introduce new things to the player. thats why HL2 and GTA4 are pretty much my fav games ever made. anyway, like i said, great video! :)

I adore this game. The lengths I go to to make it more immersive is extensive. For example, & would recommend, play Niko, Luiz & Johnny’s stories simultaneous & make sure the “moments” line up. My best example is the Museum diamond deal which involved all 3 protagonists.
I use the weather cheat first of all to make sure all 3 play throughs with each character look identical & I line up the timings perfect. Johnny arrives first so play it with him first, arrive an hour or so before Niko, then Niko obviously & then lastly play as Luiz.
You can do this various times through out the game. Even more subtle moments like the BoGT starts off with Luiz walking down the road during a sunny mid afternoon (after being held at gun point by Niko & the Irish mob in the bank) so when I do the heist with Niko I ensure I start it as early as possible in the day and use the weather cheat to make it a sunny day.

GTA V (especially online) is the McMansion that crumbles after 30 years but GTA IV is the stone castle that lasts centuries.
How is it a game 13 years old has better physics than what we have now with GTA Online? Even crappy cars feel fast when you floor it and you can actually drift vehicles properly, unlike the Los Santos Tuners bandaid of having drifting tyres. All the cool new vehicles added to online would be so much more fun to drive in GTA IV.

There's something special about that era of gaming. We had GTA IV, RDR, COD didn't suck, Halo was huge and the possibilities were endless. Its kinda disappointing looking at where we are now. It's pretty much standard for games to ship half finished and riddled with bugs. The main focus is on microtranactions and extracting as much money out of a product that already has a $60 entry fee. 4K and higher FPS are amazing and make the experience better overall but game design and industry standards leave a lot to be desired these days. Not to say there isn't amazing games out now and coming up but it could be a lot better.

I absolutely know, without watching the video yet, that it’ll hold up today and will for years to come. Graphically speaking, there’s a limit to how good games can look. This will still look good many years from now. Even San Andreas and Vice City still hold up, although they do look a bit ropey. But when they were made, we were far away from the limit to how good games could look. GTA IV was/is a lot closer to that upper limit to how games can look. Same as RDR1 and The Witcher.
I absolutely love how gritty GTAIV is. It’s not the glamorous, glitzy Los Santos (LA) but the more gritty Liberty City (NY).

    • @mariag2563
      @mariag2563 Před 2 lety +1

I grew up with GTA III / Vice City / San Andreas but tbh I think they've aged badly. It's nostalgia that keeps our love for them, but they're unplayable for younger gamers and others who have no attachment to them. Things like failing a mission and having to drive a million miles back to start again because there was no checkpoint system, awkward physics, etc.
The graphics were never good, even for the era. The characters didn't have fingers and always looked like high res PS1 models. I know it's not the most fair criticism since Rockstar had to sacrifice graphical fidelity to create their open worlds, but there are genuinely beautiful PS2 games that hold up, like Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, those games could almost pass for early era PS3/360 games.

Also, am I the only one who takes great issue with the driving physics in this game? It’s not that I’m bad at driving by any means, but I just think the cars are way too boat-like and roll fully onto their suspension for even the slightest change in direction. They also seem to fly off the ground way too easily when, realistically, it would be much harder to get any airtime. I also hate the AI drivers who always change lanes into other cars, making it close to impossible to drive across a bridge without damaging your vehicle. This isn’t to say I prefer the driving in GTA V, but I just feel that people give it a lot more credit than it’s owed.

I’ve played this game more times that id like to admit, all the details are perfect, the radio stations with the perfect soundtrack and commercials, the pedestrian behavior, the strong; accurate to the time; aesthetic as well as an improved game level in compared to previous Rockstar Games (in terms of graphics) , the incomparable and exquisite story making along with unique characters, fucking great dialogues, the takes, all of it.
    Masterpiece.

I can remember seeing that opening and thinking this is finally the moment "next-gen" had arrived, the new consoles had been out a year or two but this felt like the first big release, for me

I sold and bought this game soo many times as a kid to fund other games, Everytime Game would offer me 10 pound and would snap at it. I remember when it originally dropped I annoyed my parents to buy me it. 60 pounds for a game back then was not even thinkable in our house LOL
