Since Hansi Flick assumed head coaching duties at the start of November, Bayern München have stormed back to their accustomed position at the top of the Bundesliga tree. As well as scoring freely at one end of the park, the record champions have also been impressively remoulded at the other. We cast an analytical eye over Bayern's new defensive structure under Flick. @Critic One Boateng was not the problem, Kovac was. He was setting things up the way he wanted to, not the way that works best with our players. Hansi understands how to use the squad better. He has been doing well since Flick took over. I love Kovac and wanted him to become a legendary manager here, but it didn't work out obviously.

Putting Alaba in the middle helped cover more ground. Him and Davies play faster together and they have more pace to recover even when theyre beaten.

Before watching: It’s probably because they hold a very high line which means that the only way you can get close to their goal is by outpacing their extremely fast defenders like Boateng and Alphonso Davies. That’s assuming that you’ve played your way out of their intense press, played the perfect ball in behind and that a forward timed their run perfectly without falling for the offside trap. Even then you still have Neuer to get past.

I love how BTEC their defence is. An unorthodox RB in Pavard, a LB at CB in Alaba. A washed up Jerome Boateng and a speedy winger at LB. it works though somehow

Very interesting analysis
As a fan who watched Bayern week in week out ( before the virus) this video made it seem like Bayern’s defense is unstoppable when it’s truly not the case. The problem with the intense pressing is that once it’s beaten we are very vulnerable and it’s been beaten before. Examples are the losses to Levekusen and Monchengladbach. Often times we have to rely on the sheer pace of players to recover and get back which works on the left with Alaba and Davies but on the right side Boateng and Pavard have been exposed many times on the counter. Credit to Flick though because I’ve seen improvements from both players in regards to that as well as the team as a whole.
Darnell Williams Javi only played for one of the game (Against Leverkusen). The same problem arose against monchengladbach when boateng was playing. I think after those 2 games Hansi lowered the defensive line a bit in order to cope

Question: how do Bayern pick between Davies, Alaba and Hernandez once Hernandez and Sule are back. One of them definitely goes out of the starting lineup, not to mention they are also after Upamecano.
Hernandez is actually brought for the CB position. Davies is playing LB 100%. The problem is alaba's playtime. Sule and Hernandez will be playing CB, Boateng will probably be sold. Upamecano renewed his contract, he's staying at leipzig for at least an year or two. We really don't need anyone else at defence if they all remain fit

Having seen Bayern play under Hansi Flick as a Liverpool fan I can say that the way they play is extremely similar to Liverpool in so many ways.
It's the same style from bayern in the 2010s under Heyneckes which klopp brought to Liverpool

Davies, Hernandez (or Upamecano), Sule and Pavard (or Kimmich) its an amazing defense, but unfortunately some great players would be only subtitutes, like possibly Alaba, Boateng, Pavard if Kimmich plays rb and Hernandez if Bayern signs Upamecano and with Alaba and Davies at lb. If Bayer doesnt sign Sane, Davies could play in the wing for Alaba to play at left back but then Coman would be in the bench and he is too good for that
But its great to have a squad like that because of injuries, like this season with Coman, Sule and Hernandez having long term injuries
I dont know why people think that upamecano or hernandez can topple alaba from the cb position. His long balls are integral to the flick system. Neither hernandez or upa can do it.
