A comment from Finland in 2009: This is a fantastic version of Pirates of Penzance. All the problems of the rather old original are overcome with a great deal of humor and Simon Gallaher is absolutely perfect - and sexy! Gilbertand Sullivan would have loved this performance!
Dont some people talk or write utter dross. This is a superb version and the ham is perfect to the intent of G&S. A great performance from all the cast and very well done! The audience enjoyment is well marked! Thank you for posting!
WHO could help but applaud at the powerful, heart-conquering way in which he holds those long high A & G notes? & he warmed the audience up for them like a pro, playing around with the girls' attachment to his every move like that! Memories, memories!
As a die-hard & committed Savoyard I can only O.M.G. , Simon's Frederic was breathtaking, I wish I'd been in time for the full performance, it must have rocked. I once played Fred, ( ah many yrs ago ) but I don't think I will try it again after that! His sustained top Bflat - I can only dream off. Am doing Pirates again soon but this time have come down to safer registers as The King - I know my limits.
Not just a pretty face. Simon was a real talent back then. Wow. I saw him in Wicked a few years ago and you would never believe that the guy in Wicked was that same guy here in the Pirates. After this I am now a real fan.
Mabel: Yes it is Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa *speaks* bel Me: Show off. And that's what makes her a brilliant character.
I'm also really impressed by the musicianship of the Singlettes to hold up all of those harmonies so perfectly without much support from the orchestra/synthesizer
This is the best production of this musical I’ve seen, Jon English (RIP) as the Pirate King is perfect in the role as is Simon Gallagher as Frederick. Love the Fabulous Singlettes 💕💕💕🎶
Damn didn’t even realise people had replied!! I definitely struggled during rehearsals but when the shows rolled around I did well I reckon! Was one of the funnest shows I’ve ever been a part of!
I am thrilled to find this again. I saw this clip on a local "Arts" channel a couple of years ago, and was thrilled by it. I didn't find out from what production it came, or who the performers were. What luck to have stumbled across it! These people are great. I love the comedy!
.................. o..m..g... i LOVE Simon Gallaher!!!! his voice is AMAZING in this!!! the end part where he's like dancing is HILARIOUS!!! tho his voice is a little high, he's still AMAZING!!
Wow...that b flat is hard to even just hit nicely for most guys, and he absolutely made it his bitch. Amazing. I love Rex Smith in this role, but Simon takes it. Best I've ever seen this song done.
I think it would have been hilarious had he tried the shirt-opening thing at the end, after the lifting of the feet thing, but either stopped, or they didn't do it, and he'd be like "Well, I tried."
I saw this original show in Adelaide when I was really young - it was absolutely brilliant. Then the original cast put the show on again years later - John English and Simon had gotten a fair bit podgier than the first time round but it was still brilliant... Couple of years ago saw Opera Australia do a 'straight' version and it didn't even come close to touching this one. Not even close.
I had a huge crush on Simon back in the early. 80’s. Went to the show and it was wonderful, a blast, superb. He says he suffered from terrible nerves which is sad as he is a great performer and his singing,, well..just listen,
@cuckthefardinals There's no need to call anyone idiot. Operettas breached the line between Opera and Musical theater...The main difference being the amount of acting... There is a difference in the type of singing, but being closely related to musical theater, the director has the right to decide how the piece will be performed, also, the most known rendition of this Musical/Operetta is Joseph Papps and he used a cast of popular singers for it. The musical was not made for you.
Personally, I love the original opera setting of Pirates of Penzance...it's just not hardly ever lived up to. It seems to loose it's humor at times when most opera companies stage it. This version has very different orchestrations (pop oriented) and a different style of singing that I quite like also. Simon Gallaher has an amazing voice. It's incredibly hard to hit some of those notes and not come across as "straining". It's extremely hard to sing properly. He does a wonderful job.
woah, people, people. calm. he's a very good singer with a very good body to voice control and the chorus is a decent size for that sort of interpretation of the style CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE BLOODY CLIP
Freed from the constraints of tradition, all concerned in this production (including director and arranger) have a ball. Simon Gallaher has a clear and natural voice, fluid movement and a pleasing stage presence. Helen Donaldson is not far behind. But for me the plaudits go to the three sisters. Usually chorus roles are skimped. Whatever one thinks of the production, these three skilled actors grasp the opportunities with both hands . . .
yes i played the trumpet at age 65 with only highschool students in the orchester, good fun, tune a little sharp, easier to get the high notes, don't cross the fingers of your right hand. go for it.
Absolutely..the traditionalist's can protest but it is clear that the audience enjoyed the show.I saw lots of younger people in the audience and i expect that Simon was the main draw for them, would they have turned up to see a D'Oyle Carte production?i doubt it.
He held love for 21 and a half seconds! Bravo!
A hero
Homeboy just refuses to breath throughout the entire performance!
"A MAN!" and he turns around. Funny stuff.
THIS is how you perform comic opera. (And that long note! Wow!)
Simon Gallaher -- he's amazing!!! :) This is probably my favorite version of Pirates; combining the classic G&S with a lot of creativity.

Simon's voice is so amazing! The maidens also sing wonderfully! Love this version of Pirates! Beautiful performance❤
Incredible tenor. Wonderful notes, held so long.

Simon, Helen and the Fabulous Singlettes. Doesn't get any better than this.
Brilliant! WS Gilbert finally understood!
Mabel: Yes it is Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa *speaks* bel
Me: Show off.
And that's what makes her a brilliant character.
I'm falling in love with Pirates of Penzance...all over again. :)
I'm also really impressed by the musicianship of the Singlettes to hold up all of those harmonies so perfectly without much support from the orchestra/synthesizer
She is amazing. So much control.
Simon's just amazing in this! Wow!
Absolutely brilliant. G&S will be laughing in Heaven.

Fredrick must have leaned his dance moves from the Pirate King. :)
Also 20 second high note is amazing.
I have just been cast as Frederic and watching this video has made me freak the F$#% out! He is amazing hahaha
I hear you. How did you get on??
Update?
Damn didn’t even realise people had replied!! I definitely struggled during rehearsals but when the shows rolled around I did well I reckon! Was one of the funnest shows I’ve ever been a part of!
@@KingJimmeh1 That sounds great! Happy it went well
This is fucking hilarious. I don't who directed this version, but kudos.
eeli1 Simon Gallagher did. He is the one playing Frederick! 👍
@@jennyallan8440 He was the producer too. He was brilliant.
Simon G. - bring this show back! Australian Theatre misses you!!!
XD I love this play SOO much.
Those three ladies are full of win.
It was in tune! And very funny!
Beautifully sung!!!
we just did this play at my school and I played Ruth :D standing ovations and encores!
That note... INDREDIBLE

Wow, you are nothing short of spectacular!!
Absolutely brilliant. could watch this everyday.
Wonderful voice.
Creative direction and wonderful talent! Very entertaining.
i have only just discovered this version. brilliant, best ever. sad Jon is no longer with us. love Simon, plays the part brilliantly. well done all.
!!!! that was incredible! i'm speechless
god.. that note... i cant even hold it for that long. :(

4:58...any note like that is instantly called a Holy Sh*t! note.
I never knew how much Pirates of Penzance parodies Magic Flute
I think he was a bit hesitant to say he loved them, which would be why he held out those notes so long. ;)
I'm in love again...
amazing!
On the other hand that's a nice top B flat he's got there!
Wonderful voice
He's great
His voice is gorgeous beyond words. But it's reeeeeeaaaally hard for me to believe that he wants any of these *ladies,* if you know what I mean.
We did an awesome job. Senator Charles Schumer attended one of the performances. I was great. God loves me more than he loves others.
Drop dead amazing.
If only this production would come to Los Angeles. Oh happy day.
He's pretty much my hero.
Brilliant!!!!

he is a beast!
BRILLIANT!

Hey! You'd make a big impression in "Bye Bye Birdie." You got the hips and voice for the role.
i played mabel in this at my school:) junior version though... still very cool
he reminds me of neil patrick harris
But he sounds much better.

shit son!! he's fucking good. what a stud. I've been singing for like 10 years and I'm seriously put to shame
His Frederick is matched only by her Mabel!
Wow, he's just absolutely uber!
It certainly did!
Finally someone who speaks sense, I totally agree with you.
Well, he grew up on a pirate ship and the only face he saw the whole time was Ruth's...
the music sounds very modern rather than originating during bel canto or verismo periods. It's astounding.
yes i played the trumpet at age 65 with only highschool students in the orchester, good fun, tune a little sharp, easier to get the high notes, don't cross the fingers of your right hand. go for it.
7:17-7:30, SO great!!!!
MAYYYyyyyYYyyyyYyyyy.....bell LOL!
Hey guys. You should see him now April 2022 (No Joke)
How skinny are his legs! How tall his body!
Really?
Considering most boys' voices aren't completely changed by then, let alone matured and trained, that must have been something to hear.
I played Frederick in the 6th grade. I dominated.
19 seconds. 19 bloody seconds
He reminds me of a young Rod Taylor.
any one have advice 4 me cause my school is doing this play and i wanted to be frederick and there might be alot of competion
i have a audition for this tomorrow :$
Ohhhh okie :)
lol i actually like the three sisters...i take that its edith, kate and isabel....they're funny
yes, tis maaaaAAAAAAAAaaaaAAAAAaaaAAAaaAAaAaAAAAAAAAaaaAAAAAAaaaaAAaAAAAAAaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...bel
He sings like Freddy Mercury and he looks like Chris O'Donnell. Wonderful performance!
#RexSmith was very good. This guy is even better.
Oh no. Here he goes.
G&S at it's best.
@aquakid360 Haha, I actually said holy shit out loud when I heard that note. Very accurate name for it.
Simon Gallaher was brilliant! The production of Pirates currently touring Australia is just rubbish compared to this one. Thanks for putting it up!
Absolutely..the traditionalist's can protest but it is clear that the audience enjoyed the show.I saw lots of younger people in the audience and i expect that Simon was the main draw for them, would they have turned up to see a D'Oyle Carte production?i doubt it.
"Very" effective costume for sure.
Needs a pavarotti high c and c# !!!!!
Shoutout to Tobi!
oh! I have this on video! :D
only I don't know where I put it :(
Kiara Louise you can buy the DVD from the abc shop (Australia)
@NiwdeLagirdam I think he's gorgeous, it's all in the eye of the beholder!
@Balloonoid So...We're settled?
