Featuring Jon English, Simon Gallaher, Helen Donaldson, Derek Metzger, Tim Tyler, The Fabulous Singlettes, Toni Lamond and Marc James from the Gilbert & Sullivan classic The Pirates of Penzance.
there was nothing that Jon English didn't know about performing and looking heroic onstage. He combined this with stuntman training and became a fabulous physical comedian as well. Fortunately we have these youtube videos so although he is gone he is stil withus
At 1:26 theres a piece of stick or something on the stage and the guy in the kilt trys to kick it behind him and it bounces back onto the stage so he and the knife dude are both shuffling on it and trying to get it off the stage while still singing and playing their part. It's awesome
Saw a performance of this in Melbourne, with June Bronhill, Simon Gallagher and Jon English at the concert hall in 1984. An evening I wont forget for many more years. Also took part in this at school in 1959 !! 1960 I was in the Mikado, perhaps my favourite of all of them.
This show was done in Australia in 94 and opened in Brisbane, toured around and then returned to Brisbane to be filmed at the lyric theatre for ABC TV it was the highest rating show when screened on Tv a few mths later and broke DVD sales when released.
I've seen this Australian company doing this, Mikado and Pinafore, but sadly only on Tele - they are SUPERB and match anything I've seen at the Coliseum. I wish they would come to the UK.
i love love love the rock styles that are incorperated into this. it reminds me a little bit of Tommy, lol. this is deffo one of my favorite musicals of all time!
@KatellaGate I don't if anybody has responded to your comments but here goes all these months later. Jon English who plays the pirates is in fact a Australian rocker from the 70's and 80's who was nick named o'l Black Eyes. When got older he shifted to a bit of musical theatre for a lark. He was in Australian version of Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore and Mikado.
Heh, I was a pirate in my schools production a few years back. Really fun play to be a part of. Once you hear the reactions from the crowd, you can improvise a lot of fun stuff, like you saw with the bent sword :P
I first sung the part of the pirate king in 1972 - 50 years ago! - and I've seen numerous productions ever since, but this one is in a class of its own! Where can I buy the DVD?
The conductor is giving the the first beat of each measure. I believe this song is in 2/4 . So he gives them the first beat, they play two 16 ths and he gives them beat one again.
I've never been clear on whether the pirates really are nobles, or if that was just a lie to get them off the hook. Does seem like they can't be both noblemen and orphans.
Wow, I love the rock themes. They work in a way I wouldn't have thought possible. Yunno, David Bowie would have made a great Pirate King. Just watching that rendition of the Pirate King's solo about revenge... David Bowie would have destroyed it.
Definatly not 100% like the one we are doing at the Middle School i go too. But i reconize alot of it :D one of the teachers thought my choir teacher was insane for trying this out on middle schoolers
Have you even seen some of the school productions posted here? Granted they may be working with risers and cardboard, but more than a few are better interpreted than this was. I for one can't seem to sink my teeth into this production. Far too flamboyant, not enough tongue-in-cheek.
I highly doubt your school did a better production than the Queensland Theater Company in Australia. For one your school's budget is nowhere near what a national theater company has. Granted your school may have done a good production, but come on lets be serious
Completely agree, this version is CRAP! Hate the rock drum beats and and the demolition of the fourth wall. There are just way too many terrible things about this production.
I cannot believe they put implied rhymes like that at 6.30-6.42 in a proper production. love it.
I want the dvd of this so much!
This is, without a doubt, my favourite production of The Pirates Of Penzance!
there was nothing that Jon English didn't know about performing and looking heroic onstage. He combined this with stuntman training and became a fabulous physical comedian as well. Fortunately we have these youtube videos so although he is gone he is stil withus
how did he do all that leaping and singing and dancing without getting puffed.....
@@glen7318 he does get out of breath--you can see him panting at the end of "With Cat-like Tread"
He was perfection. He gave it all on the stage, didn't he?
Have very fond memories of seeing this and we all loved Jon English
At 1:26 theres a piece of stick or something on the stage and the guy in the kilt trys to kick it behind him and it bounces back onto the stage so he and the knife dude are both shuffling on it and trying to get it off the stage while still singing and playing their part. It's awesome

LOLLL, when they turn the strobe lights on and the pirates and policemen start partying together XD
This show was done in Australia in 94 and opened in Brisbane, toured around and then returned to Brisbane to be filmed at the lyric theatre for ABC TV it was the highest rating show when screened on Tv a few mths later and broke DVD sales when released.
This is amazing; it looks like all the music they had was a keyboard, drums and cymbals!
Bahahaha, that gag at the end, setting up a rhyme for "lesbians" and changing at the last moment to Presbyterians. Pure gold.
This production is absolutely amazing. If you haven't seen the whole thing, you should.
i am doing this play at school and this is the only place my teacher is getting ideas!!!!
best pirates of penzance ever!!!
Jon English rules
this is the best versio I have seen to date jon English is brilliant, this truly is the best way to perform POP
I'm hearing "Hollywood NIghts"
wow
that orchestra is amazing!
OMG that was so cool when the lights were flashing like that!!!!
I almost cried from 4:30-4:50....
-This is the greatest production of the greatest comedy musical of its era...
I've seen this Australian company doing this, Mikado and Pinafore, but sadly only on Tele - they are SUPERB and match anything I've seen at the Coliseum. I wish they would come to the UK.
A sweet ending
To an even sweeter play
(They should really perform this next year at my school)
:D
i love love love the rock styles that are incorperated into this. it reminds me a little bit of Tommy, lol. this is deffo one of my favorite musicals of all time!
I'm doing this for my school musical this and the shows are next week! I play Mable and im so excited!
I love how the police chief goes into the pirate king's hand and the look on his face when he gets him. XD Very amusing version.
actually, we got a huge donation from the Gilbert and Sullivan society. you'd be surprised.
and money isnt everything you know.
I loved it and I'm American! :)
This is great, love the libbing. I'm doing this is a few weeks, rehearsals are going great it's all coming together. Hope it's as good as this!
I wish I had been able to see this in person. I don't think it came here, or any other version of POP, unfortunately.

My favorite G & S operetta.
R.I.P Jon English Lachlan youngberg Michael Falzon and Kevin hocking
This is a good movie I like the song as well
This was a stage show…
really true!!
Watch out for the sister tweaking the pirate's nipples! It's during the "Oh spare us" part. Absolute gold.
The conductor is giving the the first beat of each measure. I believe this song is in 2/4 . So he gives them the first beat, they play two 16 ths and he gives them beat one again.
my school is peforming this, its a pretty kool show
I've never been clear on whether the pirates really are nobles, or if that was just a lie to get them off the hook. Does seem like they can't be both noblemen and orphans.
This is a kind of a scene from The Little Mermaid Where
Ursula Kidnap Ariel and sent the bet for The SeaKing
Wow, I love the rock themes. They work in a way I wouldn't have thought possible.
Yunno, David Bowie would have made a great Pirate King. Just watching that rendition of the Pirate King's solo about revenge... David Bowie would have destroyed it.
He would have destroyed those pants too, if Labyrinth is any indication.
Damn it, now I wish that was a real thing.
bow-chicka-ow-wow
@CaballeroCatalan Right on! And never be ashamed to say so!
Where is the rest of the ending? The best bit is next!

i just took my glasses off
I hope he means "bad" as in slang for "good."
@papaknowsbest16 I think he was Fredrick, but don't take my word for it.
Definatly not 100% like the one we are doing at the Middle School i go too. But i reconize alot of it :D one of the teachers thought my choir teacher was insane for trying this out on middle schoolers
wow.... the immaturity of some people is beyond comprehensibility these days...
HAHAH MINE TOO!!!!
Have you even seen some of the school productions posted here? Granted they may be working with risers and cardboard, but more than a few are better interpreted than this was. I for one can't seem to sink my teeth into this production. Far too flamboyant, not enough tongue-in-cheek.
Did Joseph Pap give his consent for this production?.

I highly doubt your school did a better production than the Queensland Theater Company in Australia. For one your school's budget is nowhere near what a national theater company has. Granted your school may have done a good production, but come on lets be serious
I never really liked the ending of this musical. It ruins the show's best characters.
that makes no sense... grow up
Could have said lesbians Stanley. I am disappoint.
Completely agree, this version is CRAP! Hate the rock drum beats and and the demolition of the fourth wall. There are just way too many terrible things about this production.
Pirate King is pretty bad.
why? l like him
my school did a production of pirates of penzance last year... it was way better then this.
