  • BrewDay Numbers Below!
    We had the exact same grain bill in both machines, shooting for the same OG of 1.039 and a 40l batch size:-
    G40
    39.5L wort collected
    OG - 1.046
    81.5% Brewhouse Efficiency
    S40
    34L wort collected (3l more collected after the sparge so 37l total)
    OG - 1.050
    83% Brewhouse Efficiency
    In this weeks video we take the 2 newest systems from ‪@GrainfatherAllGrainBrewing‬ , the S40 & G40, and put them to the test side by side. We're brewing the mighty Five Points Best Bitter recipe featured in ‪@TheCraftBeerChannel‬ video • Five Points Best: how ... .
    www.themaltmiller.co.uk/produ...
    www.themaltmiller.co.uk/produ...
    We scaled the malt bill up to a 40l batch and then did exactly the same kit on each system to see just how the efficiency turned out.
    www.themaltmiller.co.uk/produ...
    We learnt loads about how the system work, their differences and how they stack up. The results where surprising in many ways! Also, if you want to see how this beer turns out then make sure to come along to BrewCon London in Nov 2021 as we will be serving this beer, along with some others, on our stand.

    I just got the S40 and right away rigged up a pulley system to lift the grain basket. This also solved the sparge issue as I can suspend the basket over the kettle.

    Great content fellas. I was at one point, so desperate to get my hands on a bigger system and may well do in the near future. I like the G40, it’s a good happy medium and i prefer there being no pipe in the middle of the grain basket. That said, I’m still happy with my G30! But would love to see grainfather come out with some nice updated features that the G40/70 use.

    I made a filter for the S40 that works well. Just buy the filter of the G30 and shorten it to 4.5-5 cm. It can then be put on the pump hole at the bottom of the S 40 and it holds in place, because it is stuck between the wall and the nut. It does not interfere with its size the grain basket. Because I also have the G30, I now use the S40's pump and the G30's counter-flow chiller to cool the wort and pump it to the fermenter, when I brew with the S40.

    yeah, that's what I though about the recirculation spreader, going to be oxidising it...
    but still like another viddy of this S40 they also did not show the quality of the rolling boil....
    I mean with a good boil can destroy cyanide eh! and evaporate off all sorts of crap in the water...
    from the short clips of boil you showed did not seem exactly vigorous compared to my swan doing 25 litres...
    and you could have done a side by side of the boil on each... but did not...
    apart from that... quite pro!

    • @themaltmiller8438
      @themaltmiller8438  Před 2 lety

      We’ve not tried yet but in theory yes. It’s not how the system is designed though so we can’t say we would recommend it at this point. The hop spider definitely fits.

  • @noodle845
    @noodle845 Před 2 lety +1

    Do you use a mash jacket for your grainfathers? Also with a mash re-circ i presume this must give you a consistant temp reading from top to bottom?

    • @themaltmiller8438
      @themaltmiller8438  Před 2 lety

      Hey! No we don’t use jackets on the ones in our brew school as the warehouse is a decent temperature but if that’s not the case for your brewing space then they are a great option. On the two systems in this video we found the mash temp to be consistent and in general a recirculating mash will give you a more stable temperature throughout 👍🏻🍻

    • @themaltmiller8438
      @themaltmiller8438  Před 2 lety

    • @MattCalthrop
      @MattCalthrop Před 2 lety

      @@themaltmiller8438 I was just trying to work that out myself... all the hop filters I've seen have a male thread on them, and the thread at the bottom of the S40 is also a male thread. And even if I found the right coupler, I don't think there's enough clearance from the bottom of the unit.
      I currently have a 300micron 10x25cm hop spider... with the S40, do you reckon there's much to gain from getting, say, the Mangrove Jack's 800micron 15x30cm one? I got the finer one cos I've only used pellet hops so far - and I'm also wondering if the larger surface area would make a significant difference.

      @themaltmiller8438  Před 2 lety

      Fully depends on the volume you are working with but to get from around 80c to 100c is about 20mins, which you can start to ramp up to whilst you are sparging the grain basket

  • @joshbonner159
