- A hydroelectric dam has collapsed in southern Brazil after days of heavy rain that triggered massive flooding, killing more than 30 people.
Another 60 people are missing in Rio Grande do Sul state, officials said.
About 15,000 residents have fled their homes since Saturday. At least 500,000 people are without power and clean water across the state.
The extreme weather has been caused by a rare combination of hotter than average temperatures, high humidity and strong winds.

we really appreciate the concern. The situation is really chaotic but there is a large task force taking place involving the federal government and people from all over the country. People from other states are coming to help with their helicopters, planes, private boats and collecting massive donations for the state of Rio Grande do Sul. I live in the state capital and unfortunately most of the people who live near the lake and are affected do not have resources to deal with it. Tomorrow I will go with some friends to try to rescue people and animals. Nature can be extremely wild sometimes.

I'm from Rio Grande do Sul. Just for the record... the area hit by the floods and destruction is similar to the areas of England, Scottland and Wales combined. The State population is about 11 million inhab. and the number of people directly affected about 5 million. It's incredible how the number of victims will remain relatively low (about 300 expected fatalities) under the circumstances (about 800mm of rain in 3 days). About a 100 towns are severely damaged. Also the capital, Porto Alegre, is severely affected The same area was hit by floods in 1941 and 1922 but economic losses were much less important then because of the population size which was much smaller on those days.
That's horrible. Reminds me to the flood in Pakistan a few years ago. 2/3 of the country was affected. :(
To be honest I think the death toll is way above thousands, and that's only the human numbers
Чтт вы там называете городом? Огород? Если у вас всего на 11 миллионов только пострадавших городов (!) уже 100.
Meanwhile in Southeast Asia they are burning up in record heatwaves!!! This is terribly sad.
Same here. Too much heat waves nd floods
Indian here. People are dying in these heatwaves here, of heat strokes. Our water supply is getting affected. The Climate Crisis is really unfolding in a scary way in the past few years.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia, received a huge rain last night, some streets are flooded :D
Kerala, India. We recive rain every two days, not everywhere though. We will be welcoming the monsoon in the next two weeks. Everyone stay indoor!
And yet, Conservatives/Republicans/Rightists keep telling everyone global warming is fake.
Unfortunately, Brazilian authorities already informed that next week things are gonna get much worse in that area.
In Brazil... the authorities were informed that at least 500 municipalities are at great risk! Rio Grande do Sul will completely flood and we won't be able to do anything... pray for us!

I'm from there and this shit is crazy, the biggest and most intense amount of flooding I've seen in my life and I've seen more than a handful that brought entire communities to the ground, this is state wide, so many cities and towns have been covered in water or partially damaged, my brother fathers is still missing and is within one of the areas cut off by the flooding. The coast of the capital had to be evacuated. It's not hurricane winds of destruction but torrential rain that doesn't stop and overflows rivers and large lakes flooding nearby towns and cities, most of them are near bodies of water, so many are affected. Given the wide scale and magnitude of the issue, it is likely it'll take a lot more effort to fix most of the damage and rescue those in need than it would in any prior natural flooding I have ever seen in the region. Brazil is very warm up north and less in the middle, but the south is highly temperate and has both high heat summers and cold winters which causes a LOT of rain to pour during raining season, but this is beyond anything. I hope to God that people who need help can get it before it's too late.
Omg, am so sorry, may God intervene and be found 😢😢 hugs ,,,the same we're going through in kenya 😢😢
I hope help comes very soon. Prayers for everyone.🙏🏼

But me and my family managed to scape while helping a few other ppl to do the same. Nobody actually believed that something like that would happens and most of the ppl was caught by surprise and because of that got stuck in their houses without being able to scape. There was som criminals who took advantage from the disaster to rob stores, there was some poor of soul who was even putting prices to rescue others, like how can u be so heartless? But the majority of the ppl who I saw were totally heroes risking their own lifes to save others who they never haven't met before. Risking life's to save even animals, those were simple ppl not even from the rescue team. Everyone helping each other and that's something that I hope to never forget, that love still alive on the hearts of my Brazilian brothers.

97 dead
130 missing
380 injured
67,000 completely homeless
164,000 in shelters
1,450,000 affected somehow
417 cities affected by the rain
51 cities with problems in their water supply (16 with no drinkable water)
408,000 points with no electricity
I hope that all animals are safe and none of animals have been killed
Unfortunately no. Many dogs and cats left behind. Some being rescued 5 days after being on l roofs without water or food. Many drowned tided up or unable to swim to higher ground. The ones rescued are just being brought to dry land. There arent many shelters for them. Animals activists are doing the best they can, but the magnitude of it is tremendous. Many horses died tied up or stuck in their fenced space. So sad to watch. One horse was on the roof and the scene viralized. You might come across it some day.He was rescued and made it. But many bovine were seen being carried away by the waters. There are huge farming areas for bovine in Rio Grande. When the water finally drain, we ll really have the real portrait of this disaster. I ve seen footage of some pigs dead, sheep and dogs. This is a large rural area being flooded, many animals being exploited there, platantions. It is the biggest rice productor here in Brazil. A factory with 100 thousand ton of soy was flooded. It will affect our economy too. Well... priority is to save human life, animals come in second plan. Just so sad. I am a Brazilian and vegan and it hurts so bad to watch the human and non human misery, but animals have much less chance and much more challenges face and it is not their fault.

Sad days and heavy hearts
This seems a few dams that have burst in the last few years and looks an increasing threat to communities. This is bad enough that communities and power stations are impacted but also farmland and smelting of ores.
The resilience of our dams and water supply needs urgent assessment and investment.
We Kenyans as well going through floods, may Almighty God have mercy upon us
We 'The People' of the world need to accept this being the new normal because scientists for many decades were ignored. We kept being told it might be a problem in the year 2100, but extremes are here today. Southeast Asia in a heat wave, Brazil record flooding, Kenya flooding... Maybe the scientists will be listened to now?
If you think we can have true control over how the climate acts, then you, my friend, are delusional af. Earth has had cycles for hundreds of millions of years now, if the planet wants to get rid of us, then we sure as hell ain't gonna be able to do much to stop it with current technology...

Horrible reporting! Saying "the Brazil floods in the State of Rio Grande do Sul" is the same as "the US floods in the State of California"-why bother? Not once did the reporters mention where or which cities were affected. I am in Brazil right now. The media coverage of this event here is spotty at best, but the BBC surely found a way to convey even more ambiguous, purposeless news.
Most people hear Brazil and only think of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, they don't know of any of the other many states we have, but people everywhere know multiple US states and UK regions due to American and British movies being exported everywhere in the world. If they started with the state name, they'd not get as many clicks, if they said just the country name locals would get upset. You can't win with the internet.

This is the worst situation I've ever experienced. I'm Brazilian, living in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where the floods occurred. It's like a war zone; I've never seen anything like it. Unfortunately, the situation doesn't seem to be improving. Brazilians themselves haven't opened their eyes to this reality yet. While Rio Grande do Sul is underwater because of the floods, on the same day, the state of Rio de Janeiro was celebrating Madonna's concert. Many news reports and spotlights were on the singer, while such a tragedy was happening. Now that the hypocrisy is over, I would like to know if the singer will at least make a donation to help these poor souls. She received more spotlights, more attention from the Brazilian media than the tragedy that devastated an entire state. I hope that other countries, like the USA, speak up and expose the hypocrisy that many Brazilians had to witness in the face of such tragedy, because the American media talked more about the tragedy than the Brazilian media talked about Madonna.
It is not the government that is helping w boats. The help is coming from the people. Donations from Brazilians and others. The help is NOT coming from government
Government is giving some aid. Not much.
I am brazliaqn. I know this.
All of the fanatic people in the comments talking about God and punishment etc shock me because there is no way some people still see the world through this lens in 2024. And I'm not talking about just believing, that's fine, I'm talking about fanaticism. First of all, Brazil has been one of the most religious countries in the world for centuries, and it has the oldest primatial diocese of the new world, and most of its churches and dioceses were established long before the US became a christian country (and it's where most of these uneducated fanatics are coming from). Secondly, this is about climate change and if people keep making made up escuses to explain these events, society will never truly hold the people responsible accountable for the destruction that they are downing upon our world. And no nation will be "saved" if we don't stop climate change.
The place is dangerous due to ill behaving folks, they aren't living the faith anymore so it could be Devine intervention. It's a toss

It's about poor infrastructure it's not been properly maintained anyone can see that like many others the goverment is responsible for keeping these people safe an they failed
@fenellasharman7410 The dam collapsing surely was fault of a liberal government that doesn’t invest in infrastructure, leaving it to the private sector (that never does much without huge compensation). However, this storm is historical and unprecedented, and several cities were already underwater before the partial collapse of the dam, which surely was aggravating, but it was also a consequence of climate change.

So many dams collapsing in Brazil? They really need to upgrade their water storing system. Good God my country decided on upgrading water reservoirs system 2 decades ago (considering there's heavier pours of rain getting rampant every monsoon season).
Brazil is too big and corrupt for this to be taken care of, nowadays you either need a very good government or be European to be safe

The system was from 1970, really dated and poor maintained, like the friend above said, corruption

Very wet planet at the moment, the UK is soaking wet too. Fed up with rain, but at least where I live it has never been flooded in any major way.
Wishing all the best for England! Thankfully, there's lots of local natural resource for microgrids against these weather events!
So many people live in lowlands, watersheds and historic flood plains. This was fine with a stable climate but no longer. The past cannot guide future expectations, but we can use reason to surmise that water flows down and pools where it is flat. So flooding damage is somewhat preventable, but no one seems to be proactive

How did this happen was the infrastructure not maintained ????
To answer your question, yes. I'm from Rio Grande do Sul (where the floodings are happening) and I can say that the government doesn't invest in infrastructure. I'm 19 years old, since I was a child I've heard news about flooding. This time history just repeated itself, but much worse.
Brazil is far too big and corrupt, nowadays you either need a very good government or be European to be safe
Dude is talking rubish. This is not "a dam that broke", that news is flat out wrong. Is raining so much, everywhere rivers are overflowing. In places hundres of miles apart
Imagine it rained over a single day about 2ft of water everywhere in an area the size of New Mexico. The river just didn't have that kind of capacity. This is unprecedented levels of rain (literally never happened before in history). They designed the infrastructure to contain the last flood in 1940 but this one exceeded it by over 0.5m.
I think they did as much as they could with the money they could afford and it lasted almost a century. Sometimes investments just don't have that kind of horizon.
@@fzigunovI am from Rio Grande do Sul and you nailed it. People from other parts of the world (especially rich countries) think that our infrastructure was bad, but don't calculate that we cannot spend anywhere as much as they in the infrastructure, so considering what we could afford, it was held to the point it was designed. Other things, though, like the government warning people with more antecedence to leave the houses, or better investment in Civil Defense, can be blamed on the current government.
When does international help gets called in situations like this?
It should be immediately, but first the waters must recede. It is up to the Brazilian government to assess the situation and ask for specific help if needed. The good part (so to speak) is that Brazil is a very large and powerful country; Brazilians have capacity to help themselves in disasters. Also, South American countries help each other the best they can according to their capabilities. If it had been an earthquake, you bet Chile would help.
In Brazil, never!
Brazil has used a helicopter from Uruguai.
But, Brazil has 27 states and the most of them have helped Rio Grande do Sul with professionals and much equipament: helicopter, water purifiers, boats, etc.
The Union sent a huge war ship.
On the other hand, more helicopter could help, for sure!
Federal government with no clue of what to do. Completely messy actions for the first weeks. Let's see.

Government and private sector and companies must take this team effort in the rescue mission for the sick, the elderly and the young who are unable to get out of their houses.
So they should and rebuild the houses been as this is their fault no excuses for poor infrastructure not even climate change the goverment must take responsibility
